[Applause] [Music] good evening I'm John Roberts and you're watching Infiniti news tonight we begin with a developing story out of Iowa meox a highly contagious viral disease has been detected at the Fort Dodge Correctional Facility this alarming Discovery has prompted Swift action from the Iowa Department of Corrections Paul Cornelius the Department's Chief of Staff stated earlier today that robust Health measures are being implemented to manage the situation Cornelius assured the public that affected individuals are receiving care and that enhanced sanitation and isolation Protocols are in place to prevent further spread of the virus at this time the exact number of infected individuals remains unknown for those unfamiliar with meox it's part of the same virus family that causes small poox the virus first discovered in 1958 was initially called monkey pox due to its identification in primates although they are not the primary source of infection in an effort to avoid stigma the world health or organization has since renamed it meox the strain detected at Fort Dodge has been identified as clay 2 a less severe form of the virus compared to Cay 1 which is currently spreading in Africa and has yet to reach the United States the World Health Organization has declared a global Health Emergency in response to clade 1 as of August 24th there have been no prior reported cases of empo in Iowa this year with only one case in 2023 Nationwide the CDC reports a total of 32 263 cases and 58 deaths empo is a zoonotic disease meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans however it can also spread from person to person through physical contact particularly through bodily fluids respiratory secretions and contact with infected skin lesions or contaminated objects symptoms of meox typically include flu like symptoms such as fever headache and swollen lymph nodes followed by a rash that can spread to various parts of the body the disease can last from 2 to 4 weeks and can be fatal if left untreated fortunately vaccines are available and the genos vaccine is highly effective in preventing infection from both Cade 1 and CA 2 strains to prevent the spread of meox it's crucial to avoid contct with individuals showing symptoms refrain from touching rashes or scabs and practice good hand hygiene for more information on moox vaccination locations in Iowa visit the Iowa Department of Health and Human Services website stay with us here on Infinity news for more updates on this developing story I'm John Roberts and we'll be right back after this break
