dub dog LT still a little bit under the weather all right he's he's going to uh join us uh throughout the show he'll be with us uh for four downs he'll be with us for upset alert he'll be with us trash from his home uh and he'll join us later as he's dealing with a medical issue and we wish him all the best as we uh as we get going here today everyone seems to be talking in our area about the Auburn quarterback uh situation the Auburn offense and we're going to get a chance to talk to the Auburn quarterback today coming up at 9:30 so I look forward to getting his take on um where Auburn's offense is his play and what Hugh frees was talking about yesterday yeah I mean it is it is taken a life of its own because he was in front of the media once yesterday and then on the coaches show right right and the obvious question is going to be about the quarterback position and Hugh was asked very early about it yesterday um kind of in a way danced around whether or not there was going to be a change um he did say though that pton Thorn's better in practice that's what I've tried to point out is the starter beat out the backup for a reason right I mean they they they look at a lot in that that's that wasn't just like you know one day where pton Thor was better there's a there is a reason he's a starting now that doesn't mean coaching staff's always get it right we have seen backups come in sometimes and they tear it up yeah so I mean coaching staffs don't always of coaching staffs don't always get the starter right that's right that's right uh so this sound segment rockar we're going to go Cuts one two and three in order here um from yesterday Hugh freeze is his day went on one two and three into the evening with Andy burum uh is brought to you today by our talented enough yet to play Bad and win um and I know everybody doesn't want to hear that the way we're choosing to build this is to uh try to De develop young men and obviously you follow recruiting we're we're starting to get our roster uh to to be better but we can't play poorly and win particularly with five turnovers the struggle with um it it's really hard to not play a a a young man whether it's pton or whoever else it is it's really hard for me to not play a young man that consistently is the best performer in practice over and over and over and over again and his execution of the offense which um has been pretty clear to all of us that throughout camp and throughout the practice weeks and everything he his performance and his understanding of of what we want to do is has been better than than the others and and if you do that then you kind of send a message that practice really doesn't matter um having said that you know you have to carry that over into the games sometimes adjustments have to be made and I I assure you we're prepared if if if that continues it it has to we have to go another Direction okay so real quickly there to me my ears my my Alabaster Alabama IQ which isn't very high Payton Thorne is the best performer in practice it doesn't sound close does it it doesn't he said consistently the best yeah yeah never it's not not Hank Brown some days right it's consistently pton Thorn is the best walk white some days that was what I heard too I've listened to that twice now and that's what jumps out at me and then so we play him in the game now at the end he says if you're the best practice player and you suck in the game then eventually we may have to may have to switch it up but right now it's still pton Thorn it's got over at some point yes he's he's he's the best option we have right now I don't I don't see any any way you can change about that so now I got to coach up what I got that's right cut number two Rockstar Hugh freees uh and this got this got some play Yesterday Hugh free on shrinking the offense uh maybe maybe I'm giving them too much now this is all off of just one loss to Cal that's right but maybe I'm giving him too much okay here's hre like maybe form one the beginning of it so we need to listen to this critically because this is the cut where different people have heard different things is that what you're telling me this is a big one the the next one is the one that everyone but we're going to need to compare the next one to this one right so maybe all right so we need critical listening here everyone listen critically our coaching staff feels like maybe um um we attempted to carry too much because of all the different looks that they give you which they do and they did a good job with that um and instead of us just man this is who we are and let's do what we know we can do where there's a clear mind clear head and um I assure you the the package will not be big um moving forward for this week and so that we can get an accurate picture of you know is this is this going to be a reoccurring theme where we have to make decisions so um just we probably carried a bit too much but we just missed some very simple simple things that um keep us ahead of the chains and not in those third and Longs which we just can't live in so offense too big against Cal going to be smaller against New Mexico that's what I take away from that is that what is that what you take away yes and and I heard there that um we're going to we're going to we're going to trim it down and if you can't if you can't understand that if you can't if you can't handle that then we may have to make some changes now what goes on said there I mean if you play re between the lines if a package is too big if you give a quarterback too much you've got a quarterback that is maybe not as developed as he needs to be right I mean that's you that's what you do with usually with a first year starter yeah yeah can you give and this is an extreme example that I'm about to use can you give Patrick Mahomes too much offense no no I don't think you can right no can you give you know Joe burrow too much those are professional quarterbacks and it's extreme example but the reason I use that is I don't think Andy Reid thinks let's don't give him too much here as a quarterback develops he should be able to run the entire offense can I just say though that I've heard Hugh Freeze from SEC media days through all the preseason camp through the Alabama A&M game praise our boy pton Thorne he has yes and he he has a better understanding of the offense nobody's defended him more yeah better understanding of the offense um knows knows it in and out sometimes he actually said this I remember this he actually said you know in meetings now sometimes he he says something that I'm about to point out on tape and pton says it before I do I remember that I remember that so that's that's where we were going into the cow game now we're shrinking the package maybe it was too much then we get to then we get to The Firestorm okay so this is the next step huh yeah yeah tiger talk last night by the way Monday's very Ian you Auburn Network's really good I actually ran the board in Alabaster Alabama on am1500 for the Auburn Network back in 1980 something is that when they had the Banger music that would come God it was just so good I I had so much time because you could hear gim 5 talking in the commercial breaks and Jim 5 was the best I love the Auburn Network Monday seems to be a little early to do the coach's show well that's when coach wants to do it I don't think Andy was like uh H freze wants to do Thursday and Andy said no I'm a Monday guy yeah because now you get you get to do the Hugh free show the Alburn coach show on Saturday after the game then you get the Monday news conference and then you get the Monday night coaching show that's a lot of media but it's out of the way may that's he he's done now you can focus on the smaller package so she said this is from uh tiger talk and the Auburn network uh Hugh freeze last night down in Auburn and Andy buram is the voice of the Tigers and he asked Hugh freze about a meeting with the quarterbacks you mentioned earlier today that there were 15 plays that you were going to go over with with the quarterback room can you I did okay was very very frustrating it's it's not hard stuff and um just um kind of baffled truthfully okay that um I I'm the first to stand before our team and say guys we called uh five plays that schematically just they just they they they did not give you a fighting chance and that's our fault and that's tough for me to say but I always do that but uh honestly um there was one play in this this game that um that I think was a bad call by our staff and the rest of them if we just um now we blew a protection you know you can't do that and it cost us a it cost us we have a we have a wheel route running down the sideline no they totally dropped him and we blew a protection by our tail back and uh Miss missed that one and um then the others though were um pton just he he just did not fourth and two Midfield you know was not a good decision we got two Slants that are just by themselves they both won on Fourth and two stick it on them and let smooth the chains and he got greedy and tried to throw a deep ball and uh situational awareness things like that okay so so the controversy is whatever controversy there is in the in the Auburn World um and you could see more on at thebarn auburn.com we Walker white with Holden gner and we're going to evaluate those 15 plays 15 plays Andy asked that question and H free starts answering that but in the course of the answer Hugh free said our staff made one bad call in that game yeah of those 50 he did say in that game you're right he said in that game and that's where the controversy is because some Auburn fans heard Hugh free say in those 15 plays we made one bad call right right some Auburn fans heard Hugh free say in that game we made one bad call Play It Again rockstar I that's a great point a great point I went in listening for 15 plays uh because some Auburn people had taking it the way it was about 15 plays but you're right let's let's hear it again and and see if he says in the game you mentioned earlier today that there what why this stop right there oh this play We're tackled for a five yeah we got a five yard gain on this one so yeah I mean every play if executed properly is a touchdown yeah I mean felt like or positive yardage I it felt like in that answer on the Auburn Network there was a lot of player blaming there and not a lot of Coach blaming protection running back yep greedy quarterback bad reads uh running back blew a protection there was a lot of player blaming there and we as coaches called one bad play I mean hre's right or wrong puts this loss on his players not on the coaching staff he just did it he did I mean he did I um is that a bad thing is that a bad thing well fans don't like it because the players aren't the one making 8$9 million a year okay hold that though let me let me ask you this let me ask you this um I believe and you Auburn fans in the chat room let me know I believe if Hugh frees had gone in there and said uh it's all on me it's our coaching staff we're going to coach him up better Payton's good Payton's this pton that I believe they'd have bitched about that no you're right fans are going to about anything when they lose Jim no you're absolutely right about that but so so where where where is the where's the road that I've got to drive to make it happy it make you happy if I if I go in there and say it's all us it was the coaches we're going to do better next time blah blah blah blah blah then the fans are going to be like you know you got why didn't we play Hank we got to do this we got to do that if we go in there now we do it this way then you're going to say he's too critical to the players what the hell are you supposed to do yeah well and you know this is going to become more and more of an issue as players start getting paid more and more money because you know in the NFL it is not taboo at all for um I'm trying to think of a good example if if Raheem Morris had walked in the in the news conference and said Kirk did not play a good game and that's on me I've got a coaching better but Kirk didn't play a good game that's not taboo at all it's a little more Tabo in college football to walk in and say Payton didn't play a good game but that's only me I got to coach him more um here's what I would say whether Hugh fre is meant to say they made one bad call the entire game or meant to say in the course of those 15 plays 14 of them were good calls and one was a bad call either way Hugh was saying that was a player loss not a coaching loss that's what he said you can't get around that now but but aren't they all aren't they all that way I don't think so no I mean I think sometimes coaches coach out of there you know what and you just don't have good enough players now that's on the coach for not recruiting good enough players it's all due respect to to Nick Sabin and and Bear Bryant and all the all the greats that stand on the top of the college world uh they can only do so much the players are the ones that have to go out there and execute so the players the players win players lose but I'm going to say if they were evaluating 15 plays I've got to assume it was the most critical 15 plays of the game would you not assume that I don't think Hugh frees just randomly selected 15 plays or there were like 15 plays that you know might or might not have been important I'm going to guess if you're going to go to a quarterback's meeting and evaluate here are 15 plays guys we want to look at these were critical plays for whatever reason maybe it was a critical error maybe it was a critical down in distance maybe you know whatever made it critical these are critical plays and even if he didn't mean to say the whole game what he did say was in the 15 most the 15 plays we identified as most critical we only called one bad one yeah so that listen Okay am golfer landmine believer um I uh I I'm not saying you should throw players under the bus uh I'm saying what should he have done here if he had not you guys are blaming him for throwing players under the bus I think the Auburn fans would have been equally upset if they if he' said hey it's all on us well you just get tired of hearing that after a while I mean it's fine to say that all the coaches all the I mean every loss if the it's on us it's on us it's on us at some point you're like well we're paying you 8$9 million it can't be can't keep losing and it be on you like but we did this with Billy Napier I mean after week one when they lost and he started in on all that same stuff we said on this show when you're a fan you're tired of hearing that I'm paying you almost $10 million I don't want in year three you to be standing and in Hugh F's case year two you'd be standing in front of Podium talking about how bad you're coaching uh cut one today was it's um they're they're building this slowly he said that remember that played it earlier he's building this slowly some of you may not like this but I'm building it slowly yeah it's a SL it's a slow build um get the message board ready even the ones that are roasting me uh mybookie uh. AG you talking about the chat room we going to go in there the chat room My book. make the fans happy um you're correct on that you're correct on that I would I would care um Chris says who cares if it was about 15 plays of the game fact of the matter is Thorne missed too many opportunities um there there are a couple of comments like this Hulk to us says these kids make millions now to play a game so he's saying they're not immune to the criticism not many make millions but some Do's no doubt about quarterback usually does quarterback can and I don't know what I mean at what number do they cross that line of being let's take it a little easier on the players in college too they're making this amount of money they deserve all the criticism they can get yeah I I I I don't know where that number is I am of the belief that if I was a coach that I would blame my players privately mhm but publicly I would always take the blame and go positive and try to coach it up that's the way I would do it right I would be a very boring news conference you would be right this is great that Hugh is so open because it just gives us a ton of things to talk about but if I was the coach I would give you nothing to talk about uh Chris these players are getting paid to nil get over it their adults do your job um I think there is an element of that I don't disagree with him on that uh Toby Hugh frees is the leader of the team blaming the players demonstrates a lack of leadership it may be true though I mean I I don't I'm not discounting the fact well I did discount it earlier so I guess I need to walk that back I mean it's hard for me to believe you could evaluate an entire game and say we really only had one bad play call maybe you do maybe you do I've never said evaluated a game so it's unfair for me to say that it's unfair but um to say you evaluated the game or 15 plays or whatever and you made one bad play call that is one heck of a statement right there I mean that's that's a pretty good job of coaching I would say wouldn't you yeah uh Blake what was Auburn's halftime adjustments didn't seem like they did anything different between the two halves I would disagree with that defensively Auburn was much better in the second half now offensively you could certainly make that argument pass off to DJ Durkin um for adjusting because 20 of 22 in the first half and it wasn't the same in the second half I I would I would go back to offensively he did it wasn't just pton Thorn he was talking about he talked about the protection broke down several times uh Loris says damned if you do damned if he doesn't that a little bit of that comes along though with the paycheck I mean you don't get paid that kind of money and you're not in some sort of situation where you're damned if you do damned if you don't right I mean that that's just the way it works Auburn fans are not unlike any other fan base Auburn fans if they're going to pay that kind of money they expect results out of it very quickly and coaches I've never I've yet to see a coach say hey Auburn wanted to be pay me $8 million but I think this going to be a slow build and I don't want to take too much for them for a slow build so I'm going to stay at four and and I'll stay at four and then when we build it up maybe we can go to eight but I'm going to stay at four right now so if Hugh came out today and said I did a crappy job last week I want to give $750,000 back would that make everyone happy I don't think it would no but I'm just saying coaches never have a problem taking that big old raise so they shouldn't have a problem with the criticism that comes along with that yeah AJ says you can look at PFF scores they flat out didn't execute guys were running free in the secondary all day offensive line was playing blindfolded leading SEC rusher couldn't get going I can't I haven't looked at the PFF scores I don't know if they were running all day the offensive line was not good and their leading SEC rusher did not get going he is accurate on those two things I I'll go back to um the last Alabama loss that I experienced the Alabama Michigan game um it was the last game for Nick saan and I I don't I don't the the coaching I thought was fine in that um the snaps were not very good the protection was shaky against a great see sometimes a great defense it was a great defense so I just was like Hey the protection wasn't good the receivers couldn't get open against a great defense their ones were better than our ones right I mean that's what you would say as an Alabama fan like their defensive front was better than our offensive front at Tennessee jir Gibbs dropped a pass that changes that game that's right but he Dro I mean but now jir Gibbs you can't you can't you're human you're not gonna catch them all that's right um I don't know I don't know um keep going keep going uh pton Thor coming up in a second yes pton Thor will be here with us why would Blake says why wouldn't freeze just put the backup in during the game what's the worst that you um listen I know it was a tough Saturday um as you've as you've looked back on film um what went what went wrong for you guys this second year in a row this Cal defense has giving you guys fits yeah obviously like you said it was a you know disappointing frustrating weekend especially in front of our fans at home um but yeah as you look back at the film obviously there's there's a lot of things to clean up um starts with with me personally as I watch the film you know I'm looking at uh where my eyes are what my re are um and making sure that uh you know I'm playing as crisp as I can and so obviously there's some stuff to clean up there and then um you know each guy looks individually at himself as well and uh tries to to learn from that tape and and now you know it's Tuesday now so that's behind us and we're focused on this week ahead of us uh coach free talk very publicly yesterday about meeting with you and the quarterbacks about 15 plays that he brought out of that game and he talked about one coach's bad play call in the game and then those 15 plays what goes on in a meeting like that and what do you think about uh that comment there that maybe one bad play call and everything else was sort of focused on execution yeah you know we sat down and looked at those plays yesterday um just trying to get on the same page on that um you know a few of them for sure are just routine plays couple of them you know I was just explaining what I was seeing on the play and we're just getting on the same page with that so um you know just just going through that and obviously you want to uh coach re's offensive uh head coach and uh is obviously heavily involved with what we're doing so getting on the same page with him and then also talking with Coach Austin our quarterback coach and uh just making sure we're all seeing things eye to eye and getting on the same page obviously like I said um we had that meeting yesterday nothing we can do about Saturday now but we can look forward to make sure that we're uh preparing the right way for this this game this week I I can't tell you how many times I either talked to Coach freeze or heard him talk about you from SEC media days through camp and everything where he said uh in meetings I'm about to say something watching tape and pton beats me through it that you were seeing everything uh just the way he wanted um do you feel like that's changed or somewhere along the way or do you feel like you still have a perfect understanding of this offense no yeah I don't think that's changed um like we talked about it's about execution and so um you know I felt like it was the same thing watching the film yesterday you know um feel like nine times out of 10 when I uh you know maybe mess something up on a Saturday or um you know something gets uh lost along the way you know I I can acknowledge that and see it on film and or see it you know come to the sideline to be able to say it but uh you know obviously on film you watch it and I know what the answers are most of the time when I watch the say yeah I should have done this or yeah I should have done that or you know yeah we needed this to happen and it didn't and stuff like that so um still feel like we're uh very much seeing things eye to eye now it's just about making sure it happens on the practice field and also on Saturdays you talked about moving forward and yesterday coach free said uh that at least for New Mexico I don't I don't know how this will translate on down the line to Arkansas and Oklahoma and Georgia but at least for the New Mexico game Saturday he wants to come in with a smaller uh Playbook how practically I mean is that is that just something where you and he talk about here's what I'm really comfortable with all right so let's shrink it down to that he he indicated that maybe he threw too much at the offense uh Saturday against gal yeah you know I know that uh coach said that and I think that is what uh is going to happen this week a very uh refined game plan looking at things that we've we've got a lot of reps at and and uh doing that over the last few months and so um you know obviously like you said can't can't really speak for uh the weeks coming and I guess those weeks aren't really important right now you know we're just focused on this week and uh making sure that uh the stuff that we're doing everyone has confidence in and um you know all 11 guys on the field know exactly what they're doing and know exactly uh how it's supposed to look and and can go out there play fast and obviously uh play with confidence and and execute what we call yeah um it's probably a good time to remind people it is 11 people on the field at one time not it's not not always one person out there pton Thorne is with us and we appreciate the time and him being so timely every week I I I want to ask you as we as we move to this next game you said in the post game and I I love this comment um that that luckily our season's not over that that's not the last game out of conference you got all your conference games left and everything give me the mindset that you're trying to share not only with your your own head space but with your teammates because you're one of the leaders on the team that that loss is something you got to push away very quickly yeah you know just just getting back to what we do and getting back to like we talked about earlier what um you know has made us feel good to to up until Saturday you know because we felt good about where we were at and obviously Saturday uh did not go the way we planned and so now it's just about getting back to that uh to that feeling and then like I said before learning from the things as you do every week learn from the film uh and then we do have to focus on those things and make sure that it doesn't happen again you don't want it to be a pattern of those things happening like happen on Saturday so uh just getting back fixing those things making sure everybody is is locked into what we're doing and uh like we said earlier that starts with me and um you know setting the tone at practice and throughout the week and so um I said that's what that's what I'm focused on and and just getting back to playing with swagger and uh you know for me just playing quarterback you know getting us in the right play in The Run game getting the protection right and then simply just getting the ball in our guys hands you know that's the most important thing for me uh Distributing the ball and and letting our guys go play uh you are a smart kid your dad was a a high school coach am I right about that don't I remember that uh my grandfather was a longtime High School coach and then college coach and then my dad was always a college coach my whole life yeah so so you're you you you've grown up in this you're smart enough guy to know that you don't play quarterback at a place like Auburn in an SEC school and don't get some criticism for it how do you deal with that how do you drown it out I mean what do you do with that yeah you know obviously everyone says that uh you know you just don't listen to it all that and and uh sometimes that's easier said than done because uh in today's world they they come at you in all different angles you know you hear it uh verbally that's probably the least one but you know just walking down the street you hear it sometimes um and then obviously the social media they'll hit you on venmo all types of stuff so um you know you just have to you just have to block it out you have to go back to where your foundation is in in your life and for me that's um you know my faith and and my family and so um just doing that but also so just keep the focus on what's next you know like I said there's nothing we can do about Saturday but but I can I can handle today they're coming after your vinmo pton they're like they explain that one to me I've never heard that like they send you cash no no they're definitely not sending cash you know it's it's funny when when they lose money they they want the money back but when they win money on a parlay no one's ever send any money so I see I see now what a dumb question by me I understand now okay all right I well I won't go into the whole vibo thing but that that's wild um but I mean I guess on the flip side of that it's better to play at at school whose fans care than School whose fans are apathetic right no no doubt you know I'd much rather be at a place like this where where the fans care than uh you know some place where hardly anybody shows up and and and they're not pissed off when when things don't go well so um you know it's part of the position you know you know it uh when you get into it and uh you know some guys have different experiences with it than others but uh it's something that I uh you know have known about and I'm aware of so when it does happen you can't you know fold and and be all upset about it you know so uh like I said it's on the next and and focus on today and today's practice all right it is New Mexico coming to Jordan here stadium that is the next game pton has talked this and how Payton jumped on here and handled it well you know I mean I think Payton you know it was kind of cliche hey look that's behind us it's Tuesday we've got to move forward he did take some accountability um I don't know you know this is one of those situations if it worked out for Hugh in in year two with Payton then he's not going to get criticized if Payton's not making these mistakes but when you go out and you complete right at 50% of your passes you turn it over four times and you lose to a double- digigit underdog and Cal at home that's a problem um you know in the offseason I was and I know we've talked about this a million times I was really really surprised that Hugh didn't go out and get another transfer in the portal and you look at some of the quarterbacks I mean even inate Julian saan a guy that got some reps from Ohio State former Ohio State quarterback KY mord what he's doing at Syracuse you cannot tell me that Auburn doesn't have more money than Syracuse U I was just surprised they didn't go get another guy that showed us that that Q was Ultra confident in pton Thorne and now you know he's going to have to uh take on this backlash I really don't know what to do moving forward you know I talked to a couple of Auburn fans yesterday today and they think it's already time for a change it seems a little knee-jerk I do think Cal's better than advertised CH change at quarterback change at quarterback change a quarterback yeah yeah I I mean and this this obviously you would make a change against team like New Mexico I I would say that Hank Brown could go out and look like a stud against New Mexico and I don't know what you've learned there right that's right I mean and then Lance you see him the next week against Arkansas which one thing we've learned about Arkansas this team's not an automatic out this year in the SEC as some might have thought they're going enough to beat you then you get Brent Venable's defense the next week which is their offense has suck but their defense has played well um I mean I know it there's never a great time to make a quarterback change but I I would hesitate if Hank Brown goes out and tears it up against AR or against New Mexico to think you've solved the issue either yeah look I don't know if the future quarterbacks on this roster and and maybe so and Hank brown but if you're hu it's almost like you stick with a veteran presence to pton Thorne because anyone's going to have success as you said against New Mexico and then you know against Arkansas with the way Bobby patrino was calling plays I mean that offense is legitimate uh you know and and and say what you want I know it was Arkansas Pine Bluff but for them to be able to go into still water and really score at will uh you're going to have to be able to score to beat Arkansas and you mentioned Venable's defense so I mean there's there's tricky uh potential landmines coming up on this schedule where we talked about if you wanted to do something special in year two they really needed to start out 5-0 and now you're already behind the eight ball losing week two to a double digit dog and cow um a lot of people Lance has reacted we started the show talking about this where Hugh said we had a quarterback's meeting basically with pton because he's the one playing 15 plays uh but in the conversation on on tiger talk last night he says um in the game we made as coaches we made one bad play call everything else was execution what's your thoughts on a coach saying something like that it is interesting D away um and I heard somebody allude to this like I I you know uh our former colleague and my former on air partner Ian Fitz Simmons would never say anything negative about a a college athlete because they were amateurs I don't have a problem with it now you know watching Brock pie last night his million dollars and just thinking about how many more quarterbacks are making more than San Francisco starting quarterback who had Kansas City had Kansas City on the ropes and overtime last year in a Super Bowl so uh you know maybe it's just one of these times now that you know it's probably not the best look um I think it's it would be better for Hugh FES making you know eight n million to take more accountability but I don't know maybe they really only had one bad play call it didn't look like that I thought California's defense um under Justin Willcox it seemed like they were more prepared and you know pton made some bad decisions also some bad breaks some bad B I mean you're hell of a coaching staff if you if you have a 99% success rate on calling the right plays and how do you know you called the right play if if it doesn't work you look at the tape and somebody's open well I think I maybe so and and a lot of people are saying that I and Hugh doesn't me need me to speak for him and I've never coached a game as you guys know right but my assumption would be you look at that and like they schemed this we called this this place should work if executed properly should work that's the right play call right right like you know Cal showed this this is what we called we've got what they show defensively accounted for in the play call so that play should work if run properly that's the way I understood what Hugh free said in the we only called one bad play whether it was in the 15 plays or in the whole game we only call one bad play yeah I I that that statement is is you know you you fact check that I mean there's a lot of variables to make the work make it there's no reason to say it and that's almost one of those prepared statements like you know knowing that Andy is going to bring this up and and for him to have that in the pocket well we went through it and there was really only one bad play call it's you know Year too early take the accountability um again like from our side the media if we want to criticize a guy like pton Thoren I don't think there's anything wrong with it now based on the fact that they're making a lot of money um but I think there needs to be more accountability with you freeze because you know this thing could quickly go off the rails now look um I believe that Auburn more than likely is going to win their next three games I don't I don't know a lot of people that agree with me there um I think this will refocus everyone I don't think Oklahoma is that good I think they're really solid I think their offensive line has got some issues and Cal and uh Arkansas's defense is garbage so um you know Auburn's going to have an opportunity to get four in one and if you can get four in one coming out of September you know you know the old cliche get better and better each and every week 57 plays is what Auburn ran by the way for those that are so the 15 out of 57 that's just not enough plays yeah these reps are getting limited now with with the running clock and um but man 57 plays you're not going to win a lot of games and 56 of them this guy hadn't played football in basically two years and he looked sharp on that drive but outside of that very inconsistent and I do agree with you he looked like a 40y old quarterback that had played a lot of football they've got to get their running game going uh the Jets and then I think Aaron will play better I think when it's all said and done Aaron roders has the better year uh even though better weapons than Cincinnati yeah I'm going to go Joe burrow well that was the question right Rogers yeah yeah I think I would go burrow too look they looked awful against Gerard mayo and his you know he had a great college career and he's you know for whatever you you make of him he's been a star he's really good on television he's good on commercials and uh he's he's was good at Jackson talking about and I naively said they send you money and he was like no they want their money back what's your what's your thoughts on that well leave it that's uh funny um in some way look um this is part of what happens when you professionalize College athletics um you guys probably remember I certainly remember being a kid going to games and my dad saying you never boo at a college football game yeah I remember that yep yeah I mean like as a kid going to Tennessee games uh and you know I said why he said well they're just college kids they're probably trying the best they can they're not getting paid and so it's disrespectful to uh to BU atine um you know when they're professionals you can decide that you want to boo and I think there's a generation of kids that are now grown up like me who who grew up that way and certainly many who were older than me and now everybody gets booed um in college athletics and I I shared a tweet I don't know if you guys saw it in the last couple of days New York Times had an article um about uh salary the average SEC quarterback makes according to their Graphics over a million dollar a year now uh and that's more than Brock pie who played on Monday Night Football last night makes in his third year in the NFL uh Brock pie makes $985,000 on his contract um and the average NFL I mean sorry college football player makes over a million dollars a year and so when things don't go well um I I think fans look and say hey we're paying you a lot of money you got to perform um and you're going to be treated like an adult in some way uh at at a for-profit corporation and you guys know and a lot of people out there listening or watching no if you're at a for-profit corporation and you're paid a lot of money and the company is not performing well sooner or later people get fired um and we know that's been happening for coaches players are a little bit protected in that uh they still can't necessarily get fired um I haven't heard of a lot of people yanking nil offers because I think they're worried meeting teams coaches about the the message that it sends but um but but but I think that's the era that we're in and Auburn turned the ball over five times and lost as a double digit favorite against the team that they beat last year on the road I think there are a lot of Rob ber tiger fans in year two much like there are a lot of Notre D Fighting Irish fans and what is it year three I believe a Marcus Freeman um that are sitting around and saying okay um you know what's going on here where's the consistency of uh of the product that we were expecting and you know I I say this now as a dad I mean people you TR G to shock you guys are are often mean to me on social media I kind of like it um I get it that I'm a little bit uh strange like uh I'm more likely to remember the one positive thing than T negative it just doesn't really kind register with me for whatever reason but if I I do I have two teenage boys um and if they were playing at an SEC school I wouldn't want them to be on social media um I don't think that's healthy for young athletes I I you know I get probably the reason most of it are most of them are on it or the same reason that most teenage boys are on anything it's to meet girls um so uh you know I would have followed up with pton Thor okay people are trying to take your money away how many pretty girls sled into your DMs every week I bet that kind of balances out a little bit the uh the negativity that you get and I think that's honestly the reason a lot of them are on there not to mention that you can make money now um in nil based on what your social media following is they care about that all those things but in terms of reading um what people are saying to you after a game good or bad uh I I think I would be inclined to to tell my kids and to tell my players if I were a coach there's very little that can be gained from uh from from paying attention to what people say online I I would say this if you want to play especially quarterback in the NFL um you what you get from our show like when we're interviewing pton thorner back when we had bo Knicks when he got benched and everybody was like oh that's going to be well that's going to be an awkward interview for you guys I'm like but we're paying Bo Nick to be here yeah I mean he's he's got to answer the questions there's questions we got to ask and the same thing with P Thor we paid him to be here today we pay him every week to be here he's going to have to answer the questions we ask you live let me cut you let me cut you off Tech what does it say about our media that Thor is held to a higher standard than K Heritage you've done this already you've already played this one it was de it was Deon Sanders last week yeah Deion Sanders last week but I mean in all honesty I mean I I I tweeted about this but I think it's a sign of how broken media is that we hold quarterbacks 20 year olds I don't know how old pton Thorne is 22 whatever the heck he is uh and head coaches to a higher standard than the people who want to run the country um I just I I I think it's it's symptomatic of a cultural rot um and and I think the media is uh partly to blame um when we set the expectations that hey good or bad look and will Levis freaking awful for my team yeah I was gonna get to that I mean I'm sure you guys saw the interception that he threw show up and answer every question about what what in the world he thinking after an awful performance and Nashville is not even a really critical town I mean it's not like he did that in New York City or Philadelphia or somewhere I mean you you play that type of game if you're Jaylen Herz or Dan well Daniel Jones did play that type of game um those guys get destroyed my eighth grader my eighth grader is playing uh wide receiver um at his school this year um so I go like tomorrow I'll go to eighth grade football um my uh fourth grader is playing flag football um I think that the coach would bench either of their quarterbacks if they made that play in fourth grade or eighth grade football I mean it's just I mean to say nothing of high school college or Pro it's one of the dumbest things I've ever seen but he had to show up and face the music and I do think that the accountability that Sports teaches um is important for uh for young men in particular who may not get a lot of accountability elsewhere um you know I I love football for the purpose of you know I talked to my eighth grader the other day he's like they're watching film he's like man dad the film sees everything I'm like yeah that you know the the line that everybody says is the eye and the sky don't lie um and uh and so everything that you do on a football field when you go back and watch it they can tell when you're Lolly gagging they can tell when you're taking it easy uh they can tell when you're not doing your job or giving every bit of effort out there um and that accountability matters I think in a way that is really important um and uh and and I'm not sure that kids particularly young men uh and teenage boys get that very many places outside of sports now is there a chance that week eight Texas and Georgia in Austin Georgia Texas you got me doing it brown Georgia and Texas in Austin you're the only one that cares um will be the highest rated regular season game this year bigger than the the game with Ohio State and Michigan bigger than the Iron Bowl that's a great question I mean first of all it depends on obviously both being undefeated right um and and the fact that they are basically sitting at one and two um I didn't see the numbers you probably did and because it was a blowout what did Texas Michigan do I'll have to pull it up I haven't seen yet I haven't seen that 6.3 million did Nebraska Colorado in Prime Time on NBC I did see that one but it did not say in there that it was the most watched game of the day it was so it probably Michigan Texas beat that yeah I would think I mean the the whisper number um because I was on the fox a lot last week uh talking to some guys was they thought you know so much of what the number is is a function of how close the game is because in a good game the audience builds throughout the course of the entire contest not surprisingly and a lot of people who weren't watching in the first first quarter or watching in the fourth quarter I bet if you put it graphically for inst since I bet that NIU Notre Dame game uh probably tripled Audience by the time the game ended compared to at least what it was when it started and that game was never close um but I would think that Georgia Texas has the opportunity to be huge I think George Alabama on on the 28th um has the potential to be massive because there a rivalry already there now obviously Texas is a bigger State and a bigger Market than Alabama is but people are used to Kirby Smart against uh Alabama obviously Nick Sabin being gone I think dials it back a bit uh for kayin D'Or but I think a lot of people have rooting interest in that Georgia Alabama rivalry so I actually would bet and I may end up being very wrong uh that Georgia Bama would be the bigger National draw now one other thing it also depends on how many other big games are on that day I mean I'll give you one look Tennessee Alabama play that day uh it's not crazy to think that both Tennessee and Alabama could be undefeated for that game if Alabama beats Georgia I would argue Alabama Tennessee is going to be the bigger game than Georgia Texas right and Texas gotta play the week before against Oklahoma I don't think Oklahoma is anywhere near the caliber of Texas but you guys know uh rivalry games in college football it's not uncommon for the yearly rival who's having a down year look at Alabama Auburn even in the saving era for that rival to rise up and play at an incredibly high level so my point is I mean that there's a world in which Georgia Texas both have a loss and Alabama Tennessee don't have a loss and it's not even the biggest game that weekend much less the biggest game of the year Klay Travis is with us founder of 1985 i' have gone back to nean that's 855 that's a long time ago though we focused so much on Josh Hy's offense Tennessee is playing dominant defense right now yeah I think I told you guys that to me that's the story that not a lot of people have focused on they did give up a pick six Nico got his arm hit so uh but they won 51 to10 the defense uh obviously did not give up any uh touchdowns and they're incredibly Elite on the front uh the Tennessee's defensive front seven uh in particular the defensive line is the best defense they've had in 20 years um you know that Tennessee had a lot of really really good defenses in the 90s 1985 that's the year they won the Sugar Bowl against Miami for the old school crew uh that was an incredibly talented defense um SEC Champion team uh but but I think you go back and look at the uh uh at the at the defensive line play against Dy State and it remains to be seen how good NC State is going to be but the expectation was they're a pretty good ACC team right I mean they came into the year in the top 25 for a reason expectation wise they couldn't they couldn't run the ball they couldn't pass the ball I mean it was like every snap Tennessee's defensive line just swallowed up their offensive line and I think I'm correct they have four graduate graduate seniors on that offensive line for NC State it's supposed to be the strength of the team um and they just got dominated and obliterated all day long so what I do think is you guys will appreciate this I think Tennessee can be uh on defense as good as as you know a top 10 defense can be I think the and I think they're going to be pretty consistent there because they're very deep they have good talent maybe a little questions in the secondary if they go up against the incredibly Elite offensive line can Texas protect Quinn ERS for instance if they were playing that caliber of opponent you question what the secondary will do um but but I think you look at the uh uh at Nico and I think there's real analogy for Nico with Cam Newton in 2010 um and and follow me along here you guys will know well most of your listeners viewers will but cam was paired with Gus Malon if you go back and watch the first couple of weeks of that season the growth of Cam Newton over the course of the year was incredible to the point where he was a Heisman Trophy caliber one of the best single season quarterback performers we've ever seen in the SEC and uh and and look I think with Josh Eiffel who is a really good play caller uh and Nico if you're going to give the bullish case for Nico it is as the season goes by the time he gets into November he's really starting to hit a stride you've got a defense that is not going to give up a ton of points and so you have Tennessee who's able to compete and beat anybody um in uh in college football um I said before the season that to me there were four games out there if you looked at Vegas NC State was one well it was a laugher right now you got at Oklahoma in about 12 days um and then you've got uh Alabama and Knoxville and you got Georgia on the road if Tennessee now can go one and two um against Oklahoma B and Georgia then I feel like they'll go 10 and two I think they have the horses to beat everybody else just better talent and I think 10 and two in the SEC is going to get you in the playoffs so to me 10-2 has been the target since the off season I thought they'd go 10-2 or nine and3 um they'll have an opportunity I think to beat Oklahoma and Norman in two weeks 12 days like I said and uh if that happens I think you have to start this uh this past Monday well I think just simple execution and fundamentals you know I think um obviously we all know that you know we had some issues with some penalties and um some lapses in execution and that certainly hurt us in the first you know three quarters of the game and um I thought the guys did a better job you know of executing simple things well and um you know we we were explosive in the game we just had a lot of those called back and um and so we need to just yeah just zero in on the details the fundamentals execution um you know and there's a lot that goes into that but I also think that's what you know what ended up hurting us was when we didn't focus on the small things on the details we didn't play with good fundamentals and technique you know we we fouled you we we had penalties and so um I thought they did a better job of that obviously you know of just executing simple plays well and um and they were helpful yeah about six times he says execution yeah oh wait for it now who who is doing the exe of the players did he just throw the players under the bus he didn't you know that was different I know you're playing you know that was different than what you free said it was different it was different but uh execution the problem there on the field well it is and again I'll point out that you basically had three linemen playing at a spot and by that I mean forby I think we can clearly say now was not the starter at right tackle right I mean pret's your starter yeah yes I mean you saw the in well he started that game because pritchet they were they thought they could skate through with pritchett's injury uh in fact word is pritchet is good to go at right tackle proor K Kaden Proctor is on the road back that both from D'Or yesterday vanark not your starter at left guard by any stretch of the imagination Tyler Booker one of the best offensive lineman in America is there and then Booker not your starter at left tackle that'll be Proctor so you had an offensive line with three guys that were starting where they weren't supposed to be is the way I would put it so I mean execution now you got to be able to execute in that situation like the next man up has got to play yeah ankles will get rolled that's right and forby unfortunately just he wasn't ready and you know he's a young guy that's unfortunate that he wasn't ready and it got Exposed on National Television for everybody to see yeah but but think everybody execution means more to me when I've got my my 11 out there and you should have that in Madison seems like everybody's going to be healthy I I'm reading in to the way that Kaylin deor keeps talking about this and this will not by the way be an injury report game that's only for SEC versus SEC yeah so there will be no injury report leading into this game on Kaden Proctor so dbor can still kind of play it close to the vest but what he said yesterday made it sound like to me Kaden's Good To Go's I would agree I would agree I I think after you if you thought may you could even hold him out until Georgia after seeing what you saw Saturday night I think if you're a deor you're like we got to get this line some play time together I uh I had heard early on Georgia was the Target that probably changed um in that Saturday in that game yeah I don't think anybody wants to go to Madison Wisconsin as loud as that place can be with the offensive line you had Saturday night that could be a mess all right uh there's a little Alabama update talking about execution when we come back Lance rejoins us and we'll do our there may be some West Virginia people that want to get out of the Alabama series on 2026 and 2027 now Neil and some people following this Lance are saying uh there may be some some U willingness on the other side too because of what the possibility of 2026 and 2027 being added SEC games uh one more to the schedule your thoughts on us maybe I always I always did not want this to happen losing a game like West Virginia to add a conference game I'd rather lose a game like Mercer to add a conference game you know what I mean oh well yeah in a perfect world I would agree with you with that I don't know how excited Alabama fans would get and Morgantown is one of those um interesting road trips I know Auburn fans were able to uh take part in that a few years ago if I'm Neil Brown I'm right there with what brown said I don't want them on the schedule I'd much rather take my chances with Pittsburgh and look that was one of the really good old school Big East rivalries you know Neil Brown on such a hot seat coming into 2023 and was able to win nine games and really a bad loss against Penn State and then you look at Penn State really struggling with Bowling Green um interesting game this weekend where Neil Brown Squad is a two and a half Point favorite over a pit team that was getting dominated by Cincinnati but able to come back and win that game I would rather personally see another conference game than West Virginia but I do agree with you um if you could pull off a mercer to continue to have a nth game in the SEC and a West Virginia that would be the the best case situation so in 2026 Alabama goes to West Virginia that's the one Neil Brown's talking about one of them they host South Florida again my Lord have we not seen enough of that already what what a thorn in the S why do we need another Alabama South Florida game those are awful and then they host Florida State and then in 27 they only the only two out of conference they have right now is the West Virginia return trip and at Ohio State in the Horseshoe oh wow so that's what Alabama has at least booked right now for those two years okay so if you give me Ohio State drop West Virginia at a you feel okay at half time it had been bad but you're like okay we're still going to win this game I felt a awful after the first possession after the F went down and scored on the first first behind the scenes of what's going on but if he seems like he isn't improving or isn't correcting the mistakes that are being made then why not try with a younger guy is not going to be here next year lose you'd rather Hank Brown at least get the time and lose right and it's if there's a time to try it's before we start playing conference games like you can't if pton starts struggling against you
