today what time is it game time so really interesting we're coming up and it is now Wednesday going into the opener for the Old Miss Rebels and this season marks the beginning of a journey that lane kein has gone on essentially since 20202 but this episode is kind of our what to watch for episode if you are just tuning in to the oon Miss Channel we do an episode on Tuesday about the keys three is the what to watch for four is the know your enemy and five on Friday will be why Miss wins the game we do that every single week that's kind of the theme every show we've done this for multiple years now and it's pretty widely successful if you look at the numbers but if you look at the what to watch for in this football game it is the fact that these transfer stars that was recruited by lay kein the number one transfer portal class in all of college football they're set to finally make their debut um we're also going to have a real big competition developing for backup quarterback and for the 2025 starting quarterback between Austin Simmons and Walker Howard that is going to be a major story and with omz having such a deep roster who is actually going to start like especially at the defensive back position and actually does that matter those are the three Impact of Attendance on SEC Games things that you need to watch for in the Ferman game we're also going to talk about Chris Gordy's Power Rankings that he gave and also Caleb Cunningham is going to be visiting for the Ferman o Miss game that is pretty cool when you're going up against an FCS opponent but we are going to get some long awaited debuts from transfers that we've all wanted we we didn't get to see them in the spring for whatever reason they just didn't happen you know they've cut down access down to a crawl basically the same thing happened to the fall nobody has laid eyes really on these players except for a couple of minutes every day some media members have gotten to go in and see that so whenever you look at somebody like Walter noan who has a chance to be the best defensive lineman in the Southeastern Conference he is really really good a former number one player in the entire country but we've not seen him in a red and blue jersey really let go so we will enjoy watching him this weekend and you know like Prince leam Mellen I do not think he Prince Le Mellen is going to be full go in this first game but I do expect 10 to 15 snaps from him even on the offensive side of the ball Antoine Wells juice Wells who came over from South Carolina he's another person that I believe is going to really break out these were the top of a transfer portal class that fans have been wanting to lay eyes on honestly since December Saturday fans are going to get to see them play and that is pretty cool and that brings the that is kind of the culmination of a Core Theme of the Podcast Episode three-year process for Lane kein one that started out by accident whenever he lost Matt Carrell um I believe even a year early he had a covid year he decided to go pro whenever he lost Matt Carell this started Lane kein going into the transfer portal as a way to find players and eventually find depth and to get to this point where 60 75% of the team is built off the transfer portal it started with Jackson Dart whenever he was a freshman quarterback at USC he was coached by Klay hton he had coach at Georgia Southern by the way um and he was at USC and they got rid of Klay hton hired Lincoln Riley Lincoln Riley decided to bring in his own quarterback and Jackson Dart could see the writing on the wall so he immediately started looking for a new home Lane kein was all in on this because he knows he needed a quarterback because all he had on the roster at that time was Luke altmire Lane kein went all out for Jackson Dart and eventually ended up winning the race to get him and Michael Trigg Michael Trigg is no longer with the program he's at Baylor right now but Jackson Dart came to ol Miss Miss got um Jared Ivy om Miss got Jordan Watkins out of that transfer portal class and that became a new toy for Lan kein he doubled up on it even a little bit more the following year bringing in really great players like Trey Harris um players that you can count on then they went in with Pete Golding and they had a little bit of a struggle against Georgia they had a little struggle against Alabama so this year in the transfer portal they went very power at that time power five heavy and got players that played against Power five opponents so you see players Like Walter Nolan Aman Mellen Lewis Moore um Chris Paul juice Wells Nate cppo Julius buo there's a lot of people that have played power five football Diego pounds to kind of rework their offensive and defensive line and it's got to the point where if you look at Miss's roster go to theas sports.com web page and look at the football roster and you can see a list of former schools that that play player played at to where this roster is built very much on transfer players so when this roster debuts when Walter noan runs out there Prince Ley Mell and Juice Wells those guys go out there it's the culmination of a three-year process that was designed to rebuild the Elma football program in a different way and in this era to where there's an ecosystem financially just completely around High School recruiting to where they do not have the staff and it would cost them a great deal of money to actually accurately rate the transfer portal what you're going to see is a lot of push back on this and they're going to try and put Lane kein in the same box that they put Bill Snyder in in the early 2000s late 1900s and because of that trying to keep other people from adopting this but if Old Miss goes 11- one 10- two just chalk makes it to the playoff host a playoff game at that point you will see other schools like Oklahoma State like Mississippi State like Arkansas Purdue not the top tier of the conference because you always can high school recruit and do well at the top tier of the conference there's a proven track record of how to build a roster if you're Georgia or Alabama or even Florida but for the next level that before was not necessarily locked out of what was going on but it was much more difficult to compete because of resources and everything else the transfer portal has provided a school like old miss an opportunity be to become an elite college football team this year old Miss is number six than six in the AP they are going to be favored in probably 11 of their 12 games by the time they actually kick off and going into the season everything is on the table for a c change in college football recruiting to where the transfer portal becomes the absolute number way one way to develop your roster and high school recruiting that's just an expensive way that you can go on that you have to go into whenever you need to fill needs when you have to do something like that when you need that super athlete but you have don't want to deal with nine payments into the transfer portal over the course of his high school career that's going to become a method of Last Resort I've been talking about this for multiple years I think one of the first shows that I ever did was about the nil and starting the changing landscape of college football and I think I have been dead on this from the beginning lane kein winning 10 or 11 ball games and just doing chalk just doing what's expected of them will be a sea change the likes of which college football has not seen in well honestly two years since nil got really big and um took over the sport it all starts this weekend Walter Nolan Prince Le momm Ellen juice Wells Chris Paul key Lawrence Lewis Moore definitely people need to watch for and that is which backup quarterback comes off the bench first you know we talked about going back into spring the competition for the 2025 starting quarterback position was already underway which quarterback and what does it look like with players sitting right now we'll get to see all of that whenever they come onto the field Lane kein Charlie Weiss Jr and all of that I've heard a lot of good stuff this fall in regards to that backup quarterback competition I I must admit everybody seems to be enthralled with Austin Simmons he is 6'5 220 pounds athletic and might be the best pure passer of the football on 's roster over and over again my phone has blown up about what this kid has done during the fall now I do not want to overreact entirely to all of that because I will admit freely that you the reason Walker Howard stuff might not be out there is because Austin Simmons is on the Forefront of whatas fans are interested in there he's a baseball pitcher everybody knows Austin Simmons he's the two sport guy that graduated high school two years early everybody knows Austin's story so I don't want to just discount Walker Howard and what's going on there but I will admit that leading up everything basically I've heard this fall Camp has been Austin Simmons now we'll see exactly who goes in first um in the Ferman game and honestly it would be hilarious if Walker Howard was the backup quarterback and just ran in first after everything that was heard but we'll see exactly how that goes I remember I talked about the um Jaylen Herz Tua thing before but there's been many times where backup quarterbacks have come into the game and just kind of performed at a very high Lev level you know the starting quarterback for LSU this season this season Garrett nus he came in to be the starting quarterback or the backup quarterback in 2021 or 2020 no 2021 that was the Matt carral last year Matt carral beat him Garrett NM was a true freshman came in and played actually fairly well Garrett Backup Quarterbacks Performance NM came in in the SCC championship game when the Georgia Bulldogs were getting ready to just completely whitewash on their way to a national championship he came in and played fairly well in that game as well so backup quarterbacks coming in and playing well it's good it's it is all right to be excited about what you see even if it get is against Ferman this whole thing is about having fun and one of the things to watch for is which quarterback plays the best against this Ferman defense now if we're going to be real about it the Ferman defense should not provide much more of a test than the service team did what they saw in the mock game is probably about what they're going to see in the real game and if you also take into account this Ferman lost three or four of his defensive back field and had to you go through the portal and various other means to restock the covered on the back end of the defense their defensive Line's pretty good it shouldn't matter potentially but when you look at a offense that runs a lot of rpos Walker Howard and Austin Simmons whoever is in the game they may have an opportunity to make plays even late in the third and into the fourth quarter this will be really interesting like I said they've been they've been battling for the 2025 starting quarterback position going back to March that's this competition really kicked off in Earnest and like said from everything I've heard Austin Simmons has looked really good this fall and we'll see exactly now we can put eyes on him we didn't get a spring game to introduce the fan base to Austin Simmons this will be the first time that he's run out this is honestly Walker Howard got a spring game um a couple of years ago but this will also be his first chance as well I really hate that the backup quarterback did not get into the game um in the peach ball I I I genuinely that that kind of bothers me a little bit up want to talk out about before we go into the Chris Gordy and Caleb Cunningham stuff is this game one thing to watch for is who starts and who gets most of the playing time on the field of all the transfers when you look at the defense it's truly a 22 um of players that could go in and out and they might be rotating and changing up as they go during the season but see who plays a good bit see who plays where it might be a situation where Trey Washington or somebody is lining up at free safety for a majority of snaps during the game who is the Alpha Dog of that defense and who do you need to pay attention to this is potentially the most talented Miss Roster inas history um and so in that level with the number of players that are starting level players um it'll see who is interesting to see who is going to go on the field now the next thing we have is the SEC rankings done by our very own locked on sec's Chris Gordy these are what he looks like the 16 team team is going to be league is going to be number one the Georgia Bulldogs number two the Texas Longhorns I have no problems Alabama I I I just don't know I need to see Alabama especially at the quarterback position oh miss at number four I'd probably flip Bama and ol Miss actually I'd probably flip B bam and Missouri too because I think Missouri is going to be pretty good they're number five LSU's number six that might be a little bit overrated Tennessee's seven Oklahoma's eight it's about right A&M's nine it's about right Auburn might be a little bit high at 10 Kentucky might be underrated a little bit at number 11 Florida might be a little bit underrated at 12 they might be the best team in the State of Florida Arkansas is at number 13 South Carolina is at 14 Mississippi state's at 15 and Vandy is at 16 the interesting thing on miss' schedule that they play number one okay they play number six number eight and then they go 11 12 13 14 15 pretty much a good deal Forma football they have a nice I don't want to say kinder gentler schedule but that's a pretty good list Chris Gordy is going to be doing his power rankings over the course of this season quite a bit we're going to feature them on our program as well and we're going to do it on the what to watch for episode if he gets it done so it should be pretty interesting indeed now the last thing before we get out of here is that Caleb Cunningham is expected to be at om Miss for the OM Miss Ferman game Saturday now Caleb Cunningham is from Caleb Cunningham's Attendance at Ole Miss Game Cho Tall Central which is roughly about the same distance between Tuscaloosa and Old Miss it's not very it's not a hard drive to either locations is my Point Mississippi state's completely in his backyard too so him going to the Ferman game as opposed to seeing an FBS game between Alabama and Western Kentucky which is supposed to be a better football game isn't an excellent sign for Theus rebels in the pursuit of Caleb Cunningham now we have gotten to the point of follow the visits that's what you need to do you need to pay attention to who's on campus at your institution if you do that you'll be able to um see exactly where they're going to sign with potentially Caleb Cunningham showing up on his first trip that's kind of a big deal and it means omz has more of a chance than heck even we thought they did and it's gotten Potential Recruitment of Caleb Cunningham, AK Deere, and Deuce Night by Ole Miss to the point to where I don't think I would be totally surprised if Miss ended up doing a trifecta of Caleb Cunningham AK deer and um Duce s it would not surprise me at all if all three of those ended up at Old Miss it just wouldn't now what do I have to do what do I know about that not much that's just a gut but I do know this Caleb Cunningham keeps coming back around he showed up at juice Fest Duce Knight even though Notre Dame has their no visit policy has snuck visits to Oxford Mississippi and we all know that AK deer has already been committed to miss previously so would it really be surprising if they all ended up flipping to om Miss in the end wouldn't be surprising to me kind of an interesting type situation anyway I think we're GNA talk to Brad Logan um well we talked to Brad Logan last night especially about attendance the SEC games are just about all sold out um I'm curious to see if he knows
