Week zero of high school football action ended in tragedy in the Selma area. Last night, Morgan Academy football player, Caden Tier suffered a brain injury during a play in a game against Southern Academy. He was flown to a hospital in Birmingham and just after six o'clock tonight, family said that Cayden has passed away activities at the school have been suspended to allow students and community members to come together to support Tier's family. Michael mclendon with the Alabama Independent School Association says quote as a small school, Morgan Academy feels this tragedy even more deeply. He goes on to ask for prayers for peace and comfort for Caden family and school. Now this is an extreme case, but it's still a sobering reminder of the dangerous young athletes face in contact sports. One of the more common injuries in football is a concussion. Maya Ellison from our sister station in Arkansas tells us more about signs, parents need to look out for concussions can happen to just about anyone no matter what age you are or what sport you play here in Arkansas. Many schools have protocols in place to ensure you as a parent know what to look for when it comes to concussions. You can tell if something's off, their, their balance is off. Um They're not telling stories the way that it happened while fun is the focus of most sports. Concussions are a scary part of most game names. They can also be tough to spot. According to Arkansas children's hospital, a concussion is a brain dysfunction after a head injury, but with normal brain imaging. So how do you know when your child suffers a concussion? Not remembering like their bedtime routine, the kids don't know their mom and dad. Um it, their memory does will usually come back. Uh but just the little routine things that they're it's not normal. Other symptoms can include nausea, dizziness, or balance problems, fuzzy vision, sensitivity to light or noise, headaches and confusion. And they don't just show in one particular group or athlete they can happen to anyone. But a lot of people don't realize even if they fall on the ground that modern might have hit their head, but they might have like a whiplash effect which can show signs of just like a concussion. It also takes time to recover. Shaw says that's why there are protocols in place to make sure a child is safe before returning to play. First, we go through um five or six day return to play uh which is just working them basically from walking or jogging around the track for 15 minutes all the way up to sports specific drills that they'll do ba, uh, back in practice and then we release them to full return to play.
