in 1977 the Voyager 2 probe was launched into space carrying images of Earth greetings in various languages and a selection of musical pieces on a vinyl record these items were meant to invite any intelligent life that might find the probe to visit Earth after many years traveling through space Voyager 2 reaches an inhabited planet in response to this invitation a ship from the planet heads toward Earth in Wisconsin Jenny Hayden is watching old mov movies of herself and her late husband Scott while drinking leading her to break down in tears as she prepares to go to bed an alien spacecraft enters Earth's atmosphere detected by US military radar fighter jets are dispatched to intercept it and the Department of Defense is alerted despite missiles being fired the spacecraft evades destruction and changes course Landing in Wisconsin the military confirms that the object doesn't originate from any known Air Base prompting them to call Mark Sherman from seti search for extraterrestrial intelligence to investigate the spacecraft crashes by a lake near Jenny's house and from its wreckage a glowing being emerges the beam floats across the lake and enters Jenny's home where it finds a photo album with pictures of Scott and a lock of his hair using the hair the alien decodes Scott's DNA and begins transforming Jenny Jenny awakened by the noise comes downstairs to discover a baby before her eyes the baby rapidly grows into an adult an exact replica of Scott terrified Jenny grabs a gun but when she turns back she sees the alien now has Scott's face in shock she listens as the alien attempts to communicate repeating greetings from the Voyager record in multiple languages until it finds one Jenny understands overwhelmed Jenny faints while Jenny is unconscious the alien explores the house watches films of Scott and mimics his behaviors even learning how to shoot a gun it watches Jenny interact with the raccoon in the films learning that she means no harm suddenly the alien hears helicopters approaching it gathers metallic spheres it carried and activates one which begins glowing intensely the alien uses it to send a message to its home planet indicating that Earth is hostile and its ship has been destroyed it asks to be picked up at the original Landing site in 3 days Jenny wakes up thinking everything was a dream but then she sees the alien outside she hurriedly grabs her boots and runs to her car but the alien is already in the garage with a limited vocabulary the alien urges her to leave as Government helicopters are closing in reluctant Jenny pretends the car won't start but the alien touches it with a finger starting it instantly and they drive away on the road Jenny asks where the alien wants to go using one of his spheres the alien creates a holographic map of the United States and points to Arizona as Jenny drives Mark Sherman arrives at the crash site with the military warning them to monitor for any unusual local reports meanwhile workers examining the wrecked craft are stunned to discover its Hollow as they drive the alien observes everything around him including Jenny's Behavior he notes that Jenny speeds up when the traffic light turns yellow on the radio there's news of a meteorite crash in Wisconsin and Jenny starts piecing together that the alien is extraterrestrial she asks why it looks like Scott but the alien unsure responds by singing Jenny realizing she's with an alien nearly crashes into a van to Signal the driver for help when the driver confronts them with a tire iron the alien uses another sphere to heat the metal until it melts causing the driver to flee in Terror at a lab the military informs Sherman of a possible kidnapping and the strange incident with the tire iron they finally managed to open the alien spacecraft where Sherman discovers a record identical to the one sent with Voyager 2 he realizes that the invitation has been answered Jenny and the alien stop at a gas station where Jenny leaves a note in the women's restroom asking for help the alien unaware of human Customs follows her into the bathroom and finds the note when he asks what kidnapping means a frustrated Jenny explains that's what he's doing taking her somewhere without explanation the alien pointing the gun at her removes the magazine and assures her he means no harm referencing her earlier reassurance to the raccoon in the video Jenny begins to feel a bit calmer later while the alien drives Jenny falls asleep and the alien having observed her closely now claims to know how to sleep too he starts singing a song from the radio and Jenny wakes up they discuss life on his planet planet where singing is common when she asks about Hunger the alien admits his human body feels a terrible emptiness which Jenny explains is hunger as they continue the alien accelerates at a yellow traffic light nearly crashing an irritated Jenny scolds him but the alien explains that he thought the rule was to speed up when the light turns yellow based on his observations of her driving earlier in the laboratory Jenny begins to realize her mistake while Sherman explains to the director that an alien has landed on Earth and taken the form of Scott Hayden a man who was seen during a recent kidnapping incident records show Scott has been dead for years leaving the director confused Sherman suggests the alien likely used cloning technology as they found Scott's hair at Jenny's house which provided the necessary DNA the director questions whether such cloning is possible to which Sherman responds that while human technology isn't Advanced enough the alien civilization clearly surpasses human capabilities meanwhile Jenny asks the alien when he needs to be in Arizona and he tells her that he has only 3 days when she asks what will happen if he doesn't make it the alien explains that his people will leave without him and since he can't maintain his human form indefinitely he will die they then stop at a Roadside restaurant where the alien notices a dead deer tied to the front of a car when he asks Jenny about it she explains that some people hunt animals for food the alien innocently asks if deer also eat people to which Jenny replies no a hunter approaches and demands the alien keep his hands off the deer inside the restaurant Jenny shows the alien how to reach his destination in Arizona and how to use a credit card in case something happens to her the alien keeps staring at the dead deer then sees a photo of Jenny and Scott Jenny explains that the picture was taken during their honeymoon which leads the alien to ask what a honeymoon is Jenny explains that it's a trip taken by people who are married and in love curious the alien asks about love and Jenny merely in tears tells him that love means caring for someone more than yourself Jenny tries to quietly escape the restaurant to catch a bus and leave the alien having already explained how he could get to Arizona on his own however the cook informs her that her friend is outside in the parking lot when Jenny steps out she finds the alien standing in front of the Dead dead deer using one of his metallic spheres to revive it Jenny is deeply moved by this act at that moment the hunter returns accusing the alien of stealing the deer the situation escalates and the hunter hits the alien who retaliates the Hunter's friends join the fry attacking the alien Jenny quickly grabs a gun from her car firing it into the air to scare off the men she decides not to abandon the alien and they escape together in a black and orange Mustang with Wisconsin plates pursued by the hunters the hunters however crash into a bus allowing Jenny and the alien to continue their escape as they drive a police car discreetly begins following them having been alerted by Sherman the pair decides to stop at a hotel for the night while the police are instructed to monitor them until the federal agents arrive in their room the alien watches a movie on TV where a couple kisses passionately passionately mimicking the scene he attempts to kiss Jenny while she sleeps just then someone knocks on the door warning them that cops are trying to break into their Mustang a hotel worker helps them Escape by creating a distraction however during the ensuing police chase the officers fire at their car and a bullet strikes Jenny killing her in desperation the alien drives toward an oil tank and uses one of his metallic spheres to cause an explosion shielding them both from the blast mirac ously Jenny is revived unharmed thanks to the protective shield Sherman arrives at the scene hearing reports that the alien walked out of the fire carrying Jenny he informs the director that the alien is headed toward a highway where authorities are preparing a blockade the alien takes Jenny to hide in a house being transported by truck he checks his metallic spheres and finds only two remaining he uses one to fully heal Jenny when Jenny wakes up the alien is gone having hitched a ride with a stranger determined Jenny tracks him to a restaurant where the waitress tells her the alien left with the cook she asks for a ride to follow him at a military blockade Jenny catches up to the alien and with the help of the man who drove her creates a distraction that allows her and the alien to escape in the back of a truck during the ride Jenny seems upset the alien asks what's wrong and she tells him that leaving without saying goodbye hurt her the alien admits he didn't understand what goodbye meant Jenny teaches him the concept and the conversation shifts to more personal matters the alien asks Jenny if she has ever had a baby to which she reveals she and Scott wanted one but she couldn't conceive they board a train Bound for Arizona and during the journey they grow closer sharing an intimate moment meanwhile Sherman arrives at a military base in Arizona and is shocked to see preparations for an autopsy room indicating the alien will be treated like a lab specimen back on the train the alien reveals to Jenny that he has given her the gift of a child explaining that it's possible because the baby was conceived using Scott's DNA mixed with his alien Essence the child will be human yet also a part of him and will one day become a great teacher overwhelmed Jenny initially resists but soon accepts the idea when they arrive in Los Angeles they realize they've missed Arizona but Jenny is undeterred discovering they've lost their wallet the alien uses his powers to win a jackpot at a slot machine and they buy a car to continue their Journey at the military base Sherman confronts the director outraged by the military's plan to harm the alien the director dismisses him in the car Jenny asks the alien what his home planet is like and he describes a peaceful world without war or poverty however his people have lost the diversity and vibrancy that he admires on Earth things like food food music and love as they near Arizona they stop at a restaurant only to be surrounded by police Sherman arrives and speaks with the alien who admits his people have been observing Earth for a long time moved by the alien's admiration for Humanity Sherman decides to help them Escape ordering the police to release Jenny and the alien the two finally arrive at the crater but helicopters fire warning shots before they can be harmed the alien's ship appears he kisses Jenny expressing his love and gives her his last metallic sphere assuring her that their son will know what to do with it the alien then returns to his ship and Jenny watches as he departs ending their [Music] Journey oh [Music]
