October you miss Rich's dogs match day four 5ifth and 6th November match day five 26 to 27th November Match Day 6 10th or the 11th of December my birthday uh match day 7 2122 of January and match day 8 29th of January and then The Knockouts begin on the 11th and 12th and the 18th and 19th of February right Rich what did you make of it all well I I guess I I think they seem to be making things possibly worse than they were because what's going to happen now is the big games matter less and battering the small teams matters more so they've done this to get more competition But ultimately you've got to get in the top eight and you know it's not going to matter so much anymore whether you beat the other good team in your group and so previously had two big games now it's going to be who can smash the bottom teams the best and get the goal difference up because places at the top there's going to be so many teams on the same points and places at the top are going to be decided by who goes and sticks eight goals past bratislav or Kazakhstan or or whoever else so so I actually think um whilst possibly you'll have slightly more games with something riding on them it's going to make things far more one-sided there's going to be some really awful games and uh there isn't going to be that kind of rivalry of playing two teams playing the team twice so I'm not sure it's going to be any better I mean they've expanded it whereas really the truth is if you wanted it better you had to have six groups of four instead of eight groups of four in better teams so that the groups were all stronger and they've gone the other way so I think it's going to be absolute you know it's going to be far less emotional far less kind of stuff riding on the games until you get to the last one or two when teams might be in ninth place and can sneak into the top eight but so yeah I think they're just probably probably going to damage the Champions League intriguing intriguing you are not the only one who said that today Luke first of all I mean what did you think of the game show at the beginning quite fun when it press a button hey Presto there they are do you know what I was leaving what it sounded like to me it was Ronaldo R9 Ronaldo or ronnie7 good thing I was Airborne then no it was sounds like another another bunch of just another bunch of convoluted bollocks from your wa through and um look yeah the big the big problem I have now with this format is is why why they got eight teams when and they're saying it's now a more more of a league format yet last I checks when you play when you play in a league format you have to play every team once or home and once away we're not doing that anymore so this to me just sounds more like a round robin with a knockout tournament coming in 2025 I don't get it it doesn't make sense I think it's stupid and it just it actually I I I'm only maybe maybe I'm jet like but it's just making me um it just makes me miss the old format a little bit more and let's be honest the second yeah you need to pay attention to Australian sport mate because what you know the n and the AFL don't play every team Home and Away in a league format you play R teams twice so it's you know every League 20 if every League had 20 teams M they're different story but that's in baseball in hockey in basketball in American football you don't play all the teams Hing away twice it's you know it's the Swiss format but it's it's actually not uncommon in sport around the world that you don't play home and away twice it's a it's a real football thing that you do that but in most other sports that doesn't happen I understand that but a I mean let's go through atin biller got Bayern Munich at home Li away Juventus at home Club Brew the that's why the draw took so long I thought why are they both in there but I realized that at no point do they play each other anyway yeah and you can't play your home you can't play that's why the draw was so complicated cuz they try to draw teams and make a draw where no one can play someone else more than from another country more than two teams and no one can play their own country and they're in four parts must have been a bloody nightmare like cracking the Enigma code to make the draw even work sure might have got point a part away they've tried to make it better and appreciate it's hard to them but what between City and the Dog and Duck and City versus brat Slava yeah but we could have had brattis Slava home and away in the old format I mean that was the that's why they change the reason they changed it was because in the old format you were playing Home and Away against two teams that were often seen as a waste of time but they might have actually made it worse yeah I just I don't know it is now now you have to go and batter them whereas in the past you could be like we've already won the group now we've got we've got to beat them six yeah because you know what we've gone from do you remember where away gos didn't count technically now gold difference is going to count into some of this it's going to be massive it's going to be huge it's gold difference will be huge because you're going to have so many teams on the same number of points and goal difference now decides it so banging six or seven goals past the Lesser teams will now be a big you know big thing for the teams you want to be in the top eight because being 10th or seventh might be about whether you batted someone six nil or 40 and that isn't going to be a good look for UEFA and that's going to be their problem because that will be in January it's going to be about who batters the most goals past cless of team it's just going to be uh putting the the teams with the highest it I like the new format I think it puts more pressure on the games I think that was possibly what you guys were alluding to as I come on but it puts a bit more pressure on having to win those games uh there's bigger games better games across all of the groups or whatever you want leagues or whatever you want to call it and I think the quality will improve so I get the cons but I like it I I think the pros outweigh it and I think the previous version was outdated and just got a bit boring you know just watching the DRS the same old same old and Luke said on his show it was you know we're facing Dortmund every two years or leig every year it's same bloody thing I I am grow to it to be fair like the fast of the [ __ ] actual show as people are saying doesn't seem the best but the actual format of itself I am growing to it like I as we discussed earlier but I just think we have to wait and see how it all works this season I think until we kind of see how it all goes and how the format actually works and if there's any actual benefit to it then we'll see you know everyone will Vice their opinions towards the end but who knows it could it could throw it could throw a lot of Cur more curve balls in rather than having you know these defined group stages where you've got like City like we said there Dortmund PSG and someone else in a group where you know nine times out of 10 it's probably going to be City and PSG that go through Dortmund in the Europa League yeah potentially it could now be a case of you know because there's eight automatic spots and 16 in the playoffs you could have one team that hit a real Purple Patch throughout these group games and end up in that automatic eight whereas previously they might have had what then going qualifi like they might have came third in the group because they're playing the less amount of games and then go and end up playing Europa League and struggling it could be a case rinse and repeat as well sorry sorry MK just quickly adding to what Luke said it was just quick rinse and repeat too because you know if we if we play a fixtures the way we should play them then um just left here mate left here um if we play our fixtures um if we play our fixtures the way we meant to play them then it'll be just the same as previous Seasons where you know we could end up with two or three dead rubbers to finish the group to say I think that the sad reality is they probably had to change something and whether this makes it better or worse the sad reality is the group stage was getting utterly utterly tedious so they had to change something because we were all complaining that no one was interested in the Champions League till the last you know sometimes the last eight because the last is often pretty D my because Al great Point here the new format is terrible for lower league teams Club Bru becomes because Al is a club Bru fan and a city fan and Club Bru becomes a champion which we've done so in four and five seasons we're stuck in the UCL no dropping down to UEFA and no chance to win in Europe see but I don't agree with that because then this surely now should push them to compete in the Champions League but they're not going to compete Luke you know yeah but you yeah of course like let's be realistic they probably won't but so many teams have had that comfortability of if they don't compete in the Champions League all we'll get third place we'll go in the Europa League and compete but they get theyve they've also got a very good champ teams yeah you got a very good chance of 12 games and that's what that's why it's it's you know that's the AR theyve brought this slightly in they've brought this very like me and Tom discussed it earlier they've brought this in very slightly after the Super League news yeah you know that that was being formed they brought this in after all the com camaraderie of the super league and stuff like that on the slide you know so damage limitations but it's also a case of how many City fans we see online saying oh I'd much rather running the Europa League because it's better ways and stuff like that this is now bringing teams in that probably would have played the Europa League or had to qualify for the Europa League so it's given more opportunities for lower league teams to kind of get that exposure yeah that's the only other thing I can think of really well no the big thing is they'll get 12 games if if they do well can get 12 games they get eight group games if you come if you come above what 24th so if they can get themselves out of the bottom eight they'll then get another two games so that's 10 games and then you've got a chance to win one game against a big team in a knockout and you've had 12 games and and at least six of those will been against really big teams finally does anyone know this by the way this can be to anyone on the panel I think it does I think it does for SE round yeah yeah it does for the yeah yeah that what that seeded and unseeded was on about when it go to that ground yeah yeah so it depends on that but always do a difference between first and fourth yeah it's all SE still seeding yeah one to eight and it'll be eight it'll be 9 to 16 that'll also be SE so your first you get 16 from your second you get what is that I don't know it could be something like that or it could be a case of you out from that way like I said we're probably going to have to see this in action and you know this first season's GNA have issues that people AR on that because it's all right us saying well this be that'll be you know because if the scousers are the top english team there's going to be big tables of four clubs on the top of every news I don't think the Scout is I hope not no the depth that about ultimately having a two 16 team leagues of which you play everyone twice and it's a proper proper League make no mistake Bru will want to be in the Champions League they will they won't want to drop to the Europa because the money's in the champ League they if they had the choice of being in the champ League or the Europa they say the champ League every time because of the money and I know they would much rather have a stadium full of them because their match day Revenue would rock it than someone like me who's a tight bastard who only wants to spend 20 quid on a drink or so yeah look at that monetarily you know what I mean oh it's a business football's a business it it is not the fans though but no but the fans are taking this sentiment on because so many like other rival fans are like getting away with doing a badass job and a substandard job because we've made second place a trophy we've made fourth place a trophy under venga that suddenly became something to celebrate and let's have a parade and the actual silverware of winning The League Cup because you only get two million quid for it bollocks that's no good yeah anymore yeah I Martin I think that's a bit unfair on football but football isn't just about money since Man City come along football's been about money since the Premier League started Manchester United so so football's been about money since the early Bernardo we've got a lot of players who have hit 30 and you know some of them may stay as good as they are till they're 33 34 35 but some of them will deteriorate so whereas I think we haven't got we've got a lot of players without a lot any room for improvement who are going to stay the same or get worse I think Arsenal have got a very young team who could improve so I I don't think we need to be cocky about it because we only just beat them they've signed a couple of players we've signed a player I don't think things have moved but I think they've got scope of experience and players hitting the where we've got a bit less in terms got know yeah but at some point the daddy stag gets beaten by the young buck so we've just got to make sure we don't let the Young Buck no talk about the teams generally but but there is going to be a point there is going to be a point where we're suddenly going to go crap you know de bruy Bernardo Gand their legs you I think it takes its tall like mentality wise like if you come thir if you come second for a third season in a raw yeah you cannot get past that stumbling block it doesn't matter who you have in charge who you have playing like you look at like for example you look at City in the Champions League you know historically any team that loses their first Champions League final tend to go on the win the second one you know we lost to if we if that's the case right the only play you really enough is Kyle Walker and let's be honest we all know why this is my thing Luke I know the reason why Rico Lewis being there was just a bonus but it could have been jacked from down the road there and no one would want Walker in I think people have just had enough for walk no if Walker would have had a good season last season I would have pep has not brought him on whether that's because of Fitness you know he's not up to scratch yet but Rico has performed to Warrant these starting positions I can see your kind of but you're looking too far into it to look at last season and stuff like that you're looking at you know the issues we had potentially last season there could be work amazing against like say he was and that's opinions and that's fair that's that's fair enough that's your opinion and you know I've got mine I thought he was very good I thought is if that was Walker made that get switched is a different outline different outcome yeah and I agree with that I like I don't like the double standards yeah it's got to be one rule for all you know you can't have one got away with that last week because he's Rico and he's out the academy and I love Rico I think he's amazing and I think he should be given the opportunity because you learn by making mistakes I think Rico is going to be our number one right back what I'm saying is at the moment anytime I ask someone nobody's ever taking Rico out you're not going to play Rico with 60 games I think no I think there will be times we have to take recoil of course of course but not now not we playing every but that's what I'm yeah but that's what I agree that's what I'm trying to get at P I think it's also a case of the kid is on form make the most of it whilst this kid is on form because of his age he will have a dip in form that's natural you know the experience isn't there in the likes of Walker or Ki stores and things like that Rico right now because because out of the two of them based on form he's best he's in a Purple Patch so make the most of that Purple Patch until you get you know you get that dip in form then you've got an experienced player who can come in and knows the rule yeah don't detriment Rico Lewis's development just because you want somebody like CL Walker in because he can run a bit quicker that's just my opinion no I'm listen I'm not saying I think Rico is going to be our number one right back 1,00% what I'm saying is is this thing of playing if you play him you play him and play him and play him while he's amazing then that's fine that has to go with everyone else then yeah and and I agree to that sentiment and it probably won't because of tactical reasons or you know saying Cal Walker's played no pre-season and he's played no games you've got that's that's that's even more con if you then just decide to throw him in you got to put him in at some point though and I don't put him in against Arsenal Watford international break and then when they come back that's when we're going to see the the real rotation starting to happen so that's um that's that's what's important for me right now I'm I'm just I just really I just really want football every three days to kick off again because every three days because one we got the best manager in the world for for playing every three days and we got the best squad for rotating every three days as well too so right now it's it's only I think I think it's difficult to say who should be in who should be out right now because it's just finding the best formula unfortunately un fortunately for us we seem to have found the right formula because we've W we've won comfortably two MA first two matches in the league and it's it's working fine right now so for me I would H I would happily just do rinse and repeat for West Ham and then when we get back in two weeks time then that's when we're gonna start seeing some change yeah and I think to play
