hey welcome back to another season of 90s now thank you very much you guys you're going to want to listen all the way through this episode because we are paying tribute to one of the best voices one of the most identifiable voices of our time in James Earl Jones and you're going to want to find out about an amazing documentary that is heading your way or actually is already here on one of the best streaming services and guess what it's from a show that we all used to love and watch before binge watching was a thing woohoo thanks for listening to 9s now enjoy the [Music] show is that you is it you it's me is that Adam no Adam's not here right now but welcome to season 13 episode one of 90s now proof of course with every single show that we are in fact still happening yeah yeah that's how we roll Sharon I likey I likey we have got a lot to get to today just that Adam's not here he will return that's for sure he's just busy with what do they call that work yeah right the part of the job that pays so we let him do what he has to do uh for today we uh have pretty fresh news um on a lot of stuff actually don't mind the jingles that's Shadow playing in the background uh we've got sad news we've got good documentary news and and then we've got disappointing news so which Dark Cloud do you want me to push aside that we can start with may we should have rejigged uh what we were gonna start season 13 with 90s now still happening and we're upset about it yeah um well I think you know what the the bright side is we've got Kelly's trivia and we've got a 90s rewind that'll take us back to a time uh that you know like today is still summer but we're in like fall mode so yeah if you if you smell pumpkin spice it's not us yeah check your menu plan um but I think we should U take the disappointment Boulder and move that into the spotlight for a second so that we can move it out of the spotlight afterward pretty fresh news um that Dave gr had taken to Instagram by the time this show is getting to you guys it would have been just a few days ago but to uh to let everybody know that he's become a father again not that that's disappointing I just suppose that it's you know uh not a daughter with his wife that it's uh with somebody else that he plans to fully support and uh and and take care of the situation while he mends the relationships within his family and tries to earn the trust of his wife and daughters again so I thought my initial was like what my rock and roll boyfriend I ju H it's just so I don't know I think it took the sheen off a little bit that he made a human error you know uh and obviously bigger than a human error uh when you consider his relationship and and his marriage and his family and things like that uh I I do like that he's he's you know I like the way he worded everything asking for private see the way he did just to sort of consider that there are children in the mix here his youngest I believe is 10 um I I just I I just was disappointed by it it felt like it was you know this Dave girl is like this great guy and it doesn't make him any less great I think it just you know took away a some good some good judgment in my opinion anyways and I think a few people are surprised by the news that that he shared with the world and that the daughter is Born the baby is here on Earth so it's happening it's still happening yep like 90s now it's still happening yeah I know um I uh was on a tractor most of the day so I did not see this news and it was you that informed me and um my my Sheen for him also got um mistied a little bit there so because I think you know and it's funny because you and I talk recently on um my podcast the Kelly Alexander show about um artist Chapel rone who uh has you know taken to her social media in recent weeks to to let fans know that she has a boundary between you know like her onstage life versus her offstage life right and um which I think was important for her to do and but it's funny because part of her her talking points was that she's like you know you don't know me you know you think you do and and this is my stage Persona that I have but like we're basically two ships passing in the night you know and so so but I think a lot of fans uh for whoever their person is um you think you know them because of their art so and like you know like you know whether you're a Janet fan whether you're a chapel roone fan whether you're a Dave girl fan I think like everybody has a perception and so when that perception gets shifted if it's not a perception you want or the reality is is not what you want like it makes you feel unsettled to say the least well it shakes what uh it shakes your investment yeah in you know the thing that you uh applied your love to the art of it anyways um and yeah I mean it's true like you say there is a line nobody wants to hear that though yeah nobody wants to you know to have the the person that they've put up here getting knocked down like the rest of us can so yeah well there's an artist that shall remain nameless because I'm now back on her side again it's not Janet um but but I was a huge fan of hers she got into drug issues and went to little cuckoo Cocoa Puffs for a few years and I did not enjoy how she was handling her like her attitude um especially like in a couple like media situations I felt like she was taking things for granted and I was really sad and so like I stopped buying her music for a while because I was just like and I remember being so sad because I'm like I love you so much but I can't support this behavior and then it was only later on that we found out you know that she came forth and said she had been under the influence um and you know and and so she wasn't really operating uh in a normal capacity as she normally would and and I believe she's made amends and and that stuff so obviously I'm a huge fan but it was hard like I remember being like because I was one of my like I you know I was a teenager at the time and I remember just feeling like so disappointed and disillusioned let down right y yeah yeah I like how you're not telling us who it is yeah you'll probably ask me after I'm totally gon ask you yes I will yeah yeah yeah well we wish the best to the people that uh we love and the and the art that they bring us is what makes us feel good and so at some point I suppose we have to return the favor and give them the support that they need when they need it uh sidebar question before you move on are they I guess are they doing is uh food Fighters doing stuff right now like where you they he would be out touring and stuff where this would be uh you asked a good question and I don't know the answer to that my brain has been on summer mode for so long now that you know um I don't know the answer to that I think they were they must have done shows okay I mean I could find out in a normal case scenario Adam would be here and we'd say Adam find out for us and he go click clickity clickity and he would so I suppose I could do that I I'm assuming I'm assuming he will maybe if he's not on tour right now or has commitments he'll probably take some time off to uh spend the time required to get back on the good side of his Familia well clearly he's got some stuff to do that's for sure and what I can see online is that um BL Fighters have one show coming up at the end of September okay but that can't be true there has to be more than that okay that's my guess so we'll see now I see two so maybe it's my maybe it's my browser maybe uh well yeah I was gonna say now with another mouth to feed they're going to have to stay on tour yeah uh just trying to keep it light everybody so before we get into another Dark Cloud scenario as we bid farewell to one of the greatest voices of all time any generation we should do some trivia Kell we shall and this will be the the point where we tell Adam to edit this appropriately exactly um I should mention that uh just before we start trivia a quick happy birthday to one of Sharon's most favorite artists of all um pink recently turned 45 yes she did happy birthday pink happy birthday pink I'm glad I got to spend some time with you this summer uh that was fantastic that was when when she was still 44 but yeah during the summer I went to Toronto to see pink at the Roger center to see um basically what was the fourth show on the summer carnival tour in the last uh year and a half I guess so that was uh pretty spectacular she was amazing as usual Cheryl Crow was one of the openers that was awesome um and just it was a great night great experience very positive Pink as always no matter the size of the room the number of people in the crowd her uh her performance is spot on every time and by spot on I mean she's she I think strives for you know I'm not sure if it's Perfection or the best as she can do but even when there's like a glitch in the in the system somehow she just rolls with it she's just so at ease with what she does that it's a a show that's kind of an experience that's Second To None So it's very easy to continue to go back and I would want to mention also because I think this speaks to the person she is even though again all of us don't know her personally I follow a bunch of her uh because she really travels as part of a family like her dance band they really have become her family over the last x amount of years and so I follow a fair amount of them including um vocalist Stacy Campbell who used to be I follow her too yeah she's amazing and uh she was one of Janet's uh vocalists so I've actually interviewed her before and she wrote a lovely post about pink and and so did so many others and so you know that pink and they call her Alicia you know she's not pink she's she's Alicia to them um that the person is a wonderful person be with uh on stage as part of a touring family and you know friends and and boss lady and all that like she's like to a person there I must have seen five or six posts like just wishing her well and loving to loving being a part of the Pink tour family so yeah it's so it's so neat to watch and it really you feel like you're a part of it like we were just saying about the artists that we love they they bring us in because we relate to what they're singing about we connect with the the music and how it makes us feel and you have the healthy approach to your fandom that you know that there's a line and you just appreciate what they are bringing to the world yeah exactly happy birthday pink happy birthday pink uh maybe one day Sharon you and I will get on the the the appropriate bus where we get to call her Alicia I'm just gonna start doing it okay that's let manifest that that's not weird hi Alicia that's not weird at all um so we are gonna do trivia um it'll be Sharon going against Sharon I could use the practice that way when Adam comes back I'll be sharper exactly so um here we go news and politics who was president of Serbia during the breakup of Yugoslavia in the 90s um you ask a fair question I do yeah is it gorbachov no because he was not the president he Russian Russian right yeah do you want one more cas get the can a do you want sladich yes yes it is oh Sharon that's great thank you how did that just how did that just come to you did it just come to you it's yeah legit there's a lot going on in this bucket Kelly and uh sometimes you reach in and you find something and sometimes you just hear cling cling cling yeah today I found something come back later yeah uh so we're moving on to Sports um so wait a second I just want to make sure I didn't ask this one all righty which 90s baseball star boasted the nickname the crime dog H I feel you should know this Sharon I feel I should know something slow just kidding slow badan Marino no that's football yeah yeah Adam it's Adam's it's Adam's middle name because remember he's named after the golfer oh Fred Fred and then another another name that's not affiliated with Adam oh right no I don't know at all MC Griff oh of course y crime dog yeah taking a bite out of crime yeah McGriff yeah got it back to you Sharon slow all right so I wish I could make my voice go as low and resonant as the now late great James Earl Jones that happened this week too yeah that uh one of those things like the timelessness of his voice uh when I was discussing his passing with um with my cousin I'm like how old was he it was just it was new so I hadn't seen anything and like oh like early 80s that kind of thing and then 93 yeah 93 still with that voice so we are talking the ultimate Father Figure kind of guy right um even when he was saying this is CNN you knew he had a paternal tone to him but like talk about Darth Vader legit I'm your fall off right uh talk about Lion King yeah ah just such a beautiful experience to watch that movie and then talk about feel the dreams yeah and these are just three of a long list of credits for James Earl Jones who uh had an egot right he had uh he had done stage work he had I mean his voice got him a Grammy um an Oscar and a Tony Award just incredible so an Emmy Grammy Oscar Tony and now James Earl Jones will be like coming down from the heavens man his voice is perfectly suited for this next phase of his life yeah his death it's crazy just you know what's ridiculous and I'm sure people right now are going to laugh their their rear ends off obviously with all the the roles that you mentioned plus everything else that he's got going on I'm sure the list is as long as my leg like his credits um and not like any even you touched upon it the amount of stage work he did you know on on uh on Broadway and all that um I love to this day hearing him say this is CNN I know it's ridiculous like out of all the roles like you know there's many more important things than this is CNN but something about the way he said it it makes it like the like all is well in the world when he that word or that phrase you knew where you were yeah it it it's an odd Comfort to think that this is CNN is like okay we're grounded we're good yeah but it's kind of the same and I know our American friends uh well they would relate to it because there was you know some amazing um news anchors uh obviously in the states that's that's you know like Dan Rather list goes on but for us here in Canada I know I always felt Comfort when I even if a disaster was going on in Lloyd Robertson was behind right yeah uh and so I and I would felt that way too with Peter Jennings you know so I think a lot of our American friends would would feel that way about Adan rather about um Peter Jennings Walter kronite uh Tom broka I love Tom broka my goodness my goodness so in a year where um The Lion King would have been celebrating its 30th Anniversary it's uh it's like I think even more poignant that he's got that on his list of credits such a wonderful movie and in that that movie where he's talking to um talking to the Young Lion King about being scared and and you know the younger says to the Elder but I didn't think you ever got scared and he said I was today and just this like oh my gosh like that voice that you know when your your parent tells you not that they're mad at you but that they're disappointed in you yeah you're like oh God like I've done something wrong you know yeah that that feeling he was able to share that emotion just through his voice it's pretty spectacular yeah I like it so I don't like the news that he's passed but at 93 years old I think it's fairly safe to say that he had a really good life imagine he's like I've had enough like yeah I'm out he's out Mike drop yeah yeah uh so you have got more information on something that sounds pretty cool with with David Chase and The Sopranos what's happening there it's a documentary yeah so I I'm very excited to talk about this and the fact that like I am not a soprano Super Fan so this should say a lot as I say this to you because I'm very jazzed about it so I did not watch you know religiously the show I watched um several seasons and then actually I think Sharon you might know the story but I'll just quickly tell it again so when I was a radio producer in Toronto I think it was either season three or season 4 they sent sent me the full DVDs like of the That season so I didn't have to wait like I could watch it you know like right away and so I remember I can clearly remember being like in this particular apartment I had in Toronto and like I think I watched three or four episodes in a row and then because it was so heavy like I got like sad I was sad I had to go out I had to stop Bing because that would have been one of my first experiences ever of of binge watching because binge watching wasn't a thing back then right yeah sure because got the DVDs I was able to binge watch and uh but after watching three or four of these episodes like I just felt so heavy and like just it was a lot and I was like oh my God I have to get outside so I stopped watching and went for a run to just try to change my thoughts and so after that fact I never like really kept watching Sopranos it was like I felt it was like too heavy for me I probably should have just done the one episode a week and I would have been good but I was always a fan of James gandini always a fan of Edie Falco Michael Imperioli like the list goes on I've always thought they were cool so yeah um finding out about this new documentary it's called um Wise Guy David Chase and The Sopranos and you can catch it on HBO's Max and it's in two parts from what I understand I've watched the first uh like segment or whatever you want to call it and um it's amazing and I won't give anything away but like I will say you really get an understanding if you haven't been able to kind of delve into The Sopranos like of your own valtion before it gives you a real sense of just how much David Chase breathed life into all of this including the fact that Tony's mother is basically David Chase's mother in real life oh wow oh cool and they and they show you even audition tapes of like tons of actors and actresses trying out for the various different parts and you actually see Michael imperial's like audition oh wow you know to become Christopher and you see Tony Christopher Christopher yeah and James galini and it's funny like when you're watching the segment for James gandal and his character of Tony Soprano um I don't know about you but like when I was watching it I I recognized so many like character actors who had tried out for the role and one that I it passed by so quick and I didn't have a chance to rewind but I'm 99% sure that it was Morris Bernard Maurice Bernard who's now like he's been on General Hospital for like 20 years or 30 years playing a mob boss but it was interesting how like I was like oh my God that's Maurice Bernard and like you know I again I'm I'm saying allegedly because it looked like him but you know who knows but it was just really crazy and like even the actresses that tried out you know for Edie Falco's role of Carmela um and why he insisted on the the show being filmed in New Jersey so like even if you are a casual fan of The Sopranos you will love this doc cool and and um yeah because I didn't know much about David Chase before like I knew you know that he created the show like all that stuff but I didn't know his backstory and you get to learn all about that and so yeah it's just uh again even if you're not not a soprano Super Fan this is something to watch and it's on HBO's Max which for us here in Canada I got on crave cool noted thank you very much um are you ready to go back ready Sharon ready ready ready ready we're going back to start season 13 with a 90s rewind in 1996 I thought we should go uh uh not cliche because that would be bad but kind of cliche because topping the charts for yet another week around this time in 1996 was the Macarena so the all encompassing allinclusive Macarena where your hands are moving your hips are moving you're touching your head you're jump y uh and and and on I think that also falls on you know near the top of the list of alltime earworms yep and alltime cues to go to the bathroom at a wedding or me I would dance or you dance or if you don't want to do the macaron you leave yeah um Cel indan even now still enjoying lots of uh attention and her documentary is fantastic back in 96 it was all coming back to her now okay what a big gigantic song that was say yeah uh another big voice of course was uh on the charts always be my baby actually I think she was heading in the diff the opposite direction from up on the charts at this time but not to say that always be my baby wasn't huge for Mariah Carey because it was it was um we'll stick a one hit wonder in there too and thank Dishwalla Dishwalla for doing the math and Counting Blue Cars yes sir yes ma'am I loved um the way Tony Braxton came around with you're making me high because that song oozed sexiness I remember I was working at a classic rock station my first job in radio and the record company was doing this uh listening session with uh you a bunch of different new songs and um they were driving this kind of a promotional bus but like a really fancy bus to the different radio stations in the city and stopping and you could get in and listen to their pitch and one of the pitches at that time was uh Tony Braxton and uh and you're making me high from that album so that was super cool um and Eric Clapton I'll round out uh this handful of songs with easily one of his most Soulful periods with uh teaming up with baby face and change the world great song Beautiful song that's your 90s rewind short and sweet just like me good job good job Sharon and I just did want to mention um because this happened when we were on our summer Hiatus 490s now but you talked about Mariah Carey uh our condolences to her obviously losing mom and her sister on the same day uh even though I know she hadn't been in contact it sounds like with her sister for years but that's still your sister so it's a complicated situation life tends to throw curveballs at us fast balls at us sliders at us and then big dodgeballs at us um but it doesn't change the fact that when you lose someone that's in your life it certainly has an impact so yeah our condolences to her and may there be peace at this time peace for everybody as we set to take you know hold of a a new season of 90s now we're thankful at the end and beginning of every season and every episode uh that you guys have found us and that uh you feel compelled mostly because we ask you to to pass it on to your friends and family in a forceful nature that they too listen to us uh but seriously we love that you listen we love that you find us on social media and that you feel comfortable enough to ask us questions whenever you want you can you can find us everywhere online right Cal right right NSN now.com yeah n now.com uh we will await the return of very busy at work Adam until then we'll come and play with you and appreciate that you come
