good afternoon good evening everyone please welcome secretary education College and Career director and the principal of the 2024 superintendent summer graduation program Dr suda vean contestant [Applause] good evening I didn't hear you good evening good evening and welcome class of 2024 and San Marino City Unified School District students and Families my name is suda venkatesan and director of secondary and college in career I served as the proud principal of the 2024 superintendent summer graduation program I want to begin by acknowledging the board members our cabinet members our State Assembly member who joined us today and our site leaders and our district leaders that are here today I want to thank my supervisor Mrs Anna Applegate who is the leader of educational services for her unconditional support and guidance I want to acknowledge the tireless work done by the secondary education College and Career especially our program Specialists Sandy Summers and Bob Kirby who led this effort along with Team from across the district my thank you to our Communications Department who supported the planning and operation of this event the superintendent summer graduation program has a tradition of fulfilling the district's promise of providing students with every opportunity to graduate to that end students that need additional credits to graduate beyond what they completed at their home sites join this program the program that began at one School in 2005 has now expanded to include all district high schools and is currently centrally housed at Sierra High School it has become a passion for staff who run a small High School operation complete with counselors teachers registar csos as well as classified and District staff in order to fulfill SBC usd's promise and tradition it is yet another opportunity for our 12th graders to stay on track to earn their diplomas and keep their dreams of college career or joining the military and we are the only District in the region to have such a program [Applause] the summer graduation program makes every effort to support students in their graduation call we have three parent meetings to keep students on their families informed and updated there is a District web page available that has program information and is regularly updated teachers and counselors are in daily contact with Summer grad uation program students both on campus and off to work through any issues and encourage them to completion this includes daily home visits and following up on individual student needs from the summer graduation staff and attendance verifiers from the positive Youth Development team in the student services division beginning this year we are also offering a through G coursework for students seeking to complete their College admission requirements we celebrate these remarkable students and their parents that are here tonight their persistence and unwavering commitment to their goals has brought them to tonight's graduation ceremony our district and our board has been steadfast in our commitment to provide every opportunity to our students to earn their diplomas the 186 graduates of the class of 2024 sitting in front of us is a proud Testament to that effort we want to go ahead we want to acknowledge the resolve of parents and students for pushing through this time to reach the goal of graduation the students that who are about to receive their diplomas today are a fulfillment of opportunity and achievement to this end we wish to thank the students parents and staff who have tirelessly worked to this moment to our graduates your work and your dedication has resulted in your success we appreciate you and thank you as we celebrate your accomplishments together I also want to thank the board Mr Ariano our superintendent the cabinet and the site administrators and also our State Assembly member who has joined us today who have supported this program for many years to ensure achievement for all students now I would like to invite our board member Miki chiosi to say a few words to our graduates and their families thank you hello and congratulations summer graduation class of 2024 [Applause] on behalf of the sanino City Unified School District Board of Education it is my honor to be here today to welcome you into the next season of your life to me life is a lot alike your favorite TV show or a really good book every season or chapter is different than the one before but totally dependent on what happened in the last episode sometimes it's a true comedy sometimes it's a horror and it usually includes includes a love story or two or three and there are definitely lots of Thrills and Adventures ahead some of you have already experienced each of these aspects but it's what makes life great not knowing what exactly is going to happen in the next episode today is the season finale of your High School Musical yes that's my first Disney reference and I'm a huge Disney fan while Disney once said progress is impossible without change we keep moving forward opening new doors and doing new things because we are curious and curiosity keeps leading us down New Paths when I was your age it seemed like forever from kindergarten to graduation I too went to school here in samino actually quite a few of us up here did but it was a long long long long time ago life has moved quickly since I graduated and you will find that your life has major pivot Points and plot twists High School graduation is but one of them life is full of firsts and lasts there are the memories that the rest of your life will be built on experiences like you are having right now you've worked hard to get here today your path most likely had a few challenges I mean you started High School in a pandemic at home but you persevered you did what you had to do to earn this diploma and maybe you even worked part-time or took care of family today is the culmination of your dedication in preparing to be an adult yes change is not always easy that goes for children and adults but that's okay how you handle the changes in your life is what will make it good and exciting and your life is about to change in a big way embrace it my college friend Jorge once said to me as we were talking about growing up and growing older Enjoy Every Sandwich I laughed but then I thought about what he meant every minute should be enjoyed and we need to share these moments with the people we care about and who care about us I hope that right now you are present and reveling in your graduation ceremony it is yours shared with your friends and family look around in fact you know what stand up class of 2024 stand up stand up I want you to catch the eye and wave to that family member or friend blow a kiss to them and thank them for helping you on this journey and you know what family and friends this is your celebration too so get up let's celebrate woo yeah all right we're getting this party started all right class of 2024 I know you're on your way to remarkable things I know you have incredible stories to write fabulous Adventures to experience and Futures filled with possibility and we look forward to hearing about them so come back and see us we care about you and the path you choose because I know the next great social media app developer or local business owner military leader or police officer teacher or even School Board member just may be sitting in front of us today they say that the measure of a man or a woman is not on how they respond when things go right but how they respond when things go wrong each of you is a testament to perseverance and follow through whatever your journey to the stage today hold your head up high and be proud Dare To Dream class of 2024 because a dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes and make that dream your story a reality and you know the great thing about your story your future is that you guys get to write it so to wrap this up more quote from my favorite Mouse see you real soon [Applause] so we do have a special guest as I mentioned before we would like to invite Mr James Ramos our State Assembly member to say a few words and he also has a surprise for you today thank [Applause] you well thank you so much and congratulations class of 2024 give yourselves a round of applause there so I serve in the 45th Assembly District as your assembly member in the state legislature but I'm also the first California Indian ever elected in the state legislature I'm Serrano and Kia so being able to be here to address our Future Leaders is something that's very important to me but I want to open up with one of our traditional songs acknowledging the sorrano territory that we're in and encouraging all the different uh school boards to do land acknowledgement when we recognize um people and in the areas and the territories that we're in here in the sanino City Unified District it's Serrano territory I'm going to share one of those songs with you tonight [Music] no [Applause] I find it an honor to be able to be here standing in front of you class of 2020 2 4 that went that extra mile when the world was against you you stood up and went that extra mile to be here tonight to be able to complete your graduation requirements give yourselves a round of applause there that shows your fortitude and resiliency to continue to move forward and strive against the naysayers that are out there to make sure that you overcome that and secure your dreams and education that's what tonight is about and it's also about recognizing our diverse cultures here in San berino City Unified in the San berino area making sure that you continue to strive learning your culture and sharing your culture wherever you go because in the state legislature and standing right in front of you see sharing that traditional song ancient song was something that wasn't done back in time but now moving forward share your culture diversity be proud of who you are and share who you are with the world it's time that we come together to make sure that as you move forward you know that you're not standing alone on this Das up here are people that are standing side by side with you to ensure that you're attaining your educational dreams there's few things in life that once you attain them no one could take from you that's your education your culture and your spirituality those three things make you who you are to move forward in this world so take your voices take your Journeys and share it with the world share it with your with your loved ones with your others that are out there with your family members that if you can do it they can do it if I made it to the state legislature each and every one of you can make it also it's time that we stand and lift each other up and celebrate our unique diversities and uniqueness about who we are and again tonight is celebrating you for overcoming those obstacles to be here right now thank [Applause] you class of 2024 where are you where are I can't hear you where are you well let me start off by congratulating the class of 2024 and I love this graduation because we get to see all of the high schools here together as one community and and I'm going to end my speech today talking a little bit about the importance of community but before that what I'd like for us to do at the moment is let me have all the graduates stand for one second everybody stand first of all let's give them a big round of applause it's time to start rocking the house in here because it's about [Applause] them and graduates as was mentioned here already you guys worked hard you went the extra mile to end that get to that finish line so I want you to turn to the person to the right that's next to you give him a high five and say I see you now turn to the person to the left and say congratulations now turn to the person behind you and say hey man I love you good luck in life that's it and let me have everybody in the audience now let's give them the love that they need to bring forward let's give our our graduates a standing Ovation let's go Standing Ovation let's go for our [Applause] [Music] graduates thank you everybody you may be seated so this is a particular special moment for me because 40 years ago that's right 40 years ago class of 1984 I graduated from high school right here in the Sano City Unified School District so I feel the pride that you have in your hearts right now and I want you to know that I'm very proud of you but I want you to be prepared with something that I've been doing for 40 years and it's something that assemblyman Ramos said here just a moment ago 20 years ago I left sardino and unfortunately sometimes there are people outside of sardino that when they ask us where you from they go go M right you guys hear that one you hear the M well here's what I want you to do when somebody tells you are you from sadino I want you to tell them what I've said for 40 years you darn right I'm from sardino let's go guys darn ryer from sardino so we're going to practice are you from samarino are you from sardino are you from sardino that's it sardino strong sardino pride and you should be very proud of your accomplishment and everyone on this stage the superintendent the Board of Education our teachers our principals our assemblymen our elected officials we have all poured in our Heart and souls with you and our future is in your hands so we want you to go out and not just thr Thrive because you finished high school we want you to thrive in career and more importantly in life so I give you this challenge go out there and thrive in career and in life now let me finish by talking about Community everybody in an era where so many people are trying to just divide us and make us feel ashamed of who we are what we are we need to stand up and understand that the most important ingredient in any successful and peaceful community is love love is a superpower love is not a weakness so let's go out there graduates and show people how love can unite a community how love can help us thrive in our lives and in each by giving thanks to my father God it is you who has allowed me to overcome all obstacles and hold on to my dreams and passion I am grateful for His blessings thank you my dear father Jesus secondly allow me to congratulate all the students graduating here today it has been a rough past few years for all of us but no matter how hard it seemed we kept pushing to make it here if if we made it this far we sure can't make it through our future but for now our hard work has paid off so let's make this our last good day with our school and peers [Applause] I want to continue by sharing a quote with you today that my father always told me don't try do it meaning why just try when you know you have the strength and the mindset to do it to believe in yourself to push through this is a on my own crying because I didn't want to leave my parents but it turns out it wasn't as bad as I thought I got to say that my middle school year was the best time of my life always goofing around getting along with parents and my peers going out with my friends making fun memories memories I remember us not giving a care in the world what people would think of our true selves but just like that it's all done a few weeks ago were our last cherish moments being kids in school doing work with friends talking hanging out waiting for that Bel to ring and today we start a new beginning in our journey however we're not done yet I once read your talent your talent determines what you can do your motivation determines how much you are willing to do it your attitude determines how will you do it we all have time to do better to be great for our futures to prove everyone wrong who have doubted us not just for them but for you to prove to yourself that you can do it with determination you made the class of 2024 the day has come to turn our tassel we have gotten over our tear tears and our hassles from surviving finals to to over to surviving quarantine we have officially overcome the unfor scene we have grown over the last four years and conquered our high school fears as the phase of new surprisingly sprung and our adult future has now begun we didn't get to graduate with the rest of our 2024 class but that does not make us any less we pushed through and we got it done and I'm more than sure our families are more than proud of us never give up on your dreams and never I never give up on mine because I was given the honor to be accepted into my dream University to pursue my dream in the medical field always remember you can be anything you want to be go out into the world and accomplish your goals don't let someone else's opinion of you become your reality overcome your fears and try new things believe in yourself you all have you all have what it takes to
