a completely relaxed unscripted format and I get my thoughts on everything taking place around the National Football League today and now on with our Feature Presentation September 9th 2024 it's week one of a brand new NFL season and we find ourselves over at weby stadium for this interc conference battle on Monday Night Football between the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers for the 49ers who are coming off of making it to their e Super Bowl in franchise history and who are coming off of yet another season where they made it to the UN stat championship this is a huge game because as favorites to win the division they have a chance to get off to a really strong start their schedule on paper is not bad to start the year off as their first six games are against teams that did not a playoff game in 2023 with only one of those games a battle against the Rams being against a playoff team if you can win this game you can really set the tone for the new year and pick up right where you left off yes it's going to be tough without Christian mcaffrey on offense there re a calf injury but under the lights on Nationals elevision in the final game of the week it can be done and speaking of things that can be done something that you can do right now is hit that like button down below subscribe and turn on the notification Bell so you don't miss a single video that we post on the channel WE Post every single day about the weird and wacky history of the NFL so if you like that sort of stuff then this is the place for you thanks in advance for your support as we try and hit 70,000 subscribers the game hasn't started off great for the 49ers as their first two drives accumulated zero first downs they Trail 7 to3 and if you're wondering the three points for the ners came off of a New York turnover so the offense did absolutely nothing and did diddly squatting get those points however this drive is going a lot better as they seem to have somewhat of a rhythm going and are now faced with third and five of the 29 yd line on the first play of the second quarter you're in field goal range so while the goal is to get the first down you don't want to do anything to deny yourself points then again that would be very tough to do almost impossible even a sack keeps you in field goal range even a loss of yardage on a run keeps you in field goal range just about any play you call keeps you in field goal range as long as you don't try something stupid like I don't know a wide receiver reverse you'll be able to stay in field goal range no matter what happens here on the drive and get points and here is a toss to Debo going backward long way to go taking T I know it only lost three yards and it didn't matter but holy crap welcome to dumb decisions before I break down what happened here this whole series is about taking in-depth look at decisions made during games that were clearly awful from the start this isn't something look bad in hindsight rather this is something look awful almost immediately these are moves where God instinct tells you right away that there was no way this can possibly work and sure enough your God Instinct was smarter than that of an NFL head coach and for this one we're taking look at the mind of San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan it's no secret that Shanahan not withstanding the fourth quarter of Super Bowls has been a very good head coach for the 49ers there is a reason that he's been there now for eight seasons and has won a ton games as the Niners constantly finishing in a playoff spot and making into the NFC Championship as part of an annual tradition and for the most part shanan coached a very good game against the Jets he really did I thought the way he called the game like dominating the time of possession was masterful I thought his final drive of the first half and how he managed the clock there to ensure the fact that the Niners could double up coming out the halftime break was great really Shanahan did a great job in this game considering the hand he was still going in and he coached significantly better than whatever the heck the Jets were doing where the play calling with the faniel hacking an offensive coordinator was so predictable s scarner got benched for some reason and the timeout manag by the Jets to not try and get the ball back before the break was very very shoddy but this play by Shanahan made no sense at all it really didn't and the 49ers are extremely lucky and extremely fortunate that this play didn't end up mattering at the end of the day because it truly made no sense whatsoever so with that being said let's take a look at what calling reverse on thir five of the opponent's 29 yd line is a really bad idea and I want to make extremely clear I am not anti-reverse in the slightest bit it is by design an inherently risky play but it's one that can go for a huge gain if it works out yes there is the risk that you get blown up in the back field and lose a crap ton of yards but there is also the reward of the entire defense committing one way and you having a ton of space to turn the corner and get a convoy and get a huge chunk of yardage and find the end zone trust me especially if you have a receiver back there like Debo Samuel getting the ball who is so Shifty and Elusive and is so good with the ball in his hands a reverse can work and go for a huge game heck we've seen it happen before with the 49ers the reverse is worth here's one example of it working out on Thanksgiving last year against the Seattle Seahawks and going for a gain of 15 yards there's another example of him running that play in the 2019 NFC championship against the Green Bay Packers and that one for a gain of 30 2 yards and there was another reverse that went for a first down in that same game this is not a bad play this is not a play that has zero chance at working out this is not something like the Cowboys playing Zeke at Center where you're wondering what the heck the concept is and how this could possibly work you can learn more about that by clicking a card in the upper right corner this is not something like trying a fake fueld goal where a kicker needs to run 40 yards for it to work which Kyle Shanahan's dad Mike Shanahan tried in a game against the Seattle Seahawks back in 2006 you could learn more about that by clicking the card in the upper right corner this is a play that can work and has worked so let's get that out of the way the problem is that you picked quite literally the one down in distance where you could not call that play if you call this play on First and 10 even if it gets blown up I'm not making this video if you call this play on Third and seven at your own 30 yard line even if it gets blown up I'm not making this video Heck if you call this play at the same yard line but it was first or second down I wouldn't agree with it but I'm not making this video if you call this play at the 10 yard line down in the red zone I'm not makeing this viid you get the idea this is the one spot where you absolutely could not under any circumstances call a reverse and you somehow did for some reason you did it's almost like taking a test where there's a multiple choice section and there's one essay question you can Circle B for any of the answers on the multiple choice part and even if you get it wrong you're not going to look stupid you will look stupid however if you write b as the essay because think of it in terms of the worst case scenario and think of it with the risk involved you're at the 29 yard line and it's 35 so obviously if you lose yard you're not going for it you're kicking the field goal to cut it to a 1. g because you're too far back suppose you call a regular run and it gets stuff it stinks but in all likelihood you're losing two or three yards max that pushes it back to the 32 yard line which is still a good spot for Jake Moody to try a field goal seeing as it' be a 50 yard suppose you call a passing play and you get sacked it stinks but in all likelihood you're losing eight yards max that pushes it back to the 37 yd line which is still a good spot for Jake Moody to try a field goal seeing as it would be a 55 y obviously you don't want to lose yardage but baring a turnover the worst case scenario in any other play literally any other play besides the reverse is that you're lining up for a field goal and it's just a matter of how long the kick is but on reverse seeing as this is the last play of the drive if you don't get the first down this this is the one play where if you get blown up you're out of fial range all you have to do is look at this still shot and see exactly what I mean this is where Deo Samuel has the ball it is so far back that you can't even see the original line of scrimmage if this BL is blown up for a huge loss you're at the 45 yd line it's a loss of 16 and you're not trying a 63 yard field goal with Jake moody in the second quarter so you'll have to punt it away with any other play if it gets blown up baring a turnover you're at least Walking Away With a Chance of three points this is the only play in The Playbook where if it gets blown up you're walking away with absolutely nothing there are many ways to get five yards there are very few ways to lose 16 you picked the one play where that was possible so good job there you nearly cost your team a chance at points for for no reason whatsoever because you decided to get cute to a fa and you might be saying come on you can't think of it like that because isn't that playing scared in that case why even call a play why even take any chances however there's a massive difference if you call a running play and you turn it over that's on you for not holding on to the football if you call a passing play and you take a huge sack that's on you for not blocking well and for not getting the ball out of your hands if you call a passing play and you throw an interception that's on you for making that throw not reading the defense and other words you're in control of the situation you have the upper hand you're in complete control of what happens but on a reverse you can do just about everything right but because of the design of the play and the way it's set up and the way people are blocking so long as the defense reads it right you're going to lose a ton of yardage so long as the defense snuffs it out you're completely screwed in any other scenario where you're not at least attempting a field goal you have to royally screw up in this scenario however because of the design of the play the defense just has to guess right why let them have that opportunity why put it in their hands for no reason it's like a playoff team who controls their own destiny versus one who doesn't if you control your own destiny at least you know that if you don't make the playoffs it was entirely your doing but if you don't control your own destiny you could do everything right and still not get in same thing with reverse because of how vulnerable the receiver is when he touches the ball if the defense reads it right that's game over and there's nothing you can do about it and the 49ers have to thank their lucky stars that this didn't end up biting them in the buck completely the fact that this only went for a loss of three yards especially considering where Debo got the ball and how many Defenders were around him is a minor miracle and the fact that the Niners did not get out of field goal Ranger as a result of this is incredible the only and I mean it the only reason that this play went for a loss of three and not for a loss of a gazillion is because the Jets couldn't tackle and because Deo Samuel is really freaking good at the end of the day this play didn't end up mattering since even though the Niners didn't get the first down they got three points on the drive but this could have been a huge momentum swing if any jet tackles correctly or if Debo can't maintain his balance and again just because it didn't end up mattering in the long run doesn't make it exempt from being a dumb decision if I try to jump off my bed and do a backflip when I'm not a gymnast and I don't land it but somehow don't break any bone in my body it doesn't change the fact that what I did was really freaking stupid and that absolutely applies here and after the game between these teams behind me right here no reporter asked Kyle Shanahan about his decision to run that play and caller reverse on Third and five in that spot which I'm not blaming any reporters for because I would have done the same exact thing there were way more pressing issues at hand like Christian McCaffrey's cap injury ran auk looking a bit Rusty after coming back from the contract hold out and Jordan Mason's incredible game and the fact that the ners got the win and again this play did not matter at the end of the day so I can't blame the reporters here for not asking having said that it will be one of life's greatest Mysteries that we will never know the answer to as to while Kyle Shanahan called that play doesn't change the fact that it was really freaking stupid though so what do we learn from all of this if you have a guaranteed chance at points sparing a turnover and all you have to do is not call one particular play then don't call that one particular play if there's a play in your playbook that can lose 16 yards if it backfires I'm not saying that you should never call that play again I'm not saying that but you shouldn't call it in a spot where those 16 yards can make a difference between getting points and not getting points and where you'll have no more opportunities to get back that yardage on the drive if the worst case scenario baring a turnover in one option is that you're lining up for a field goal to get points on the drive and get some momentum then call that play over the one where the worst case scenario is that you're putting the ball away way especially if both scenarios can result in the best case scenario being a touchdown or a first down and know where you are on the field before calling plays like that knowing your field position is huge and if you can't realize that then maybe it's time to re-evaluate things because when all these elements are in play you can't exactly be surprised when this play backfires talk about
