Do you
know what insect recently shut down multiple towns
in Massachusetts? Mosquitoes. Pockets of the US are
currently experiencing an outbreak of EEE or Eastern
equine encephalitis. 95% of patients
infected with EEE will develop
flu-like symptoms and will make a full recovery
after a few weeks. But 5% of those infected
will develop inflammation of the brain, with about 30% of those
cases being fatal. So officials in affected areas
are taking this outbreak very seriously to keep
the community safe. Health officials
also encourage people to use
mosquito repellents, wear clothing
that covers the skin and staying indoors during those most active
hours for mosquitoes. You know, experts say global warming
may have contributed to this latest
EEE outbreak, with the mosquito season lasting a little
bit longer than usual.
