to be president of the University of akan it's a privilege to extend a most cordal welcome to all of you who have joined us this evening for the 233rd commencement ceremonies of the University of akan welcome graduates and welcome to the parents spouses relatives and friends who have helped make possible this day of achievement and who share your pride in this celebration I'd like to ask Executive Vice President and Provost Dr John Wink to join me for some introductions we are join we are joined this evening we are joined this evening evening by representatives of our distinguished [Laughter] faculty we are fortunate to have such a remarkable group of individuals who are experts in their field sharing their deep knowledge with our students and challenging them to reach their life goals at the University of akan Faculty are not only teachers and mentors but they remain Scholars first and foremost and their writing and research helps to shape our understanding of the world members of the faculty will you please rise and remain [Applause] standing weon we're honored also to have with us members of the Board of Trustees of University of akan and I'd like to ask them to stand and remain standing as I call their names Mr Michael Saxon of Copley Mr Thomas waltmire of green and there are two student trustees or members of the Board of Trustees M Mr Nicholas Campana of Dayton and Mr Luke Smith of chiloti please join me in thanking these members of the Board of [Applause] Trustees we also have a very special guest with us this evening The Honorable Vernon syes senator of the Ohio's 28th District which includes the University of akan Senator Sykes also known as Dr Sykes since he earned his PhD in public administration at the University of akan we want to recognize his long and distinguished career in the Ohio general assembly and in public service since Senator Sykes will not be running for reelection this year due to term limits it's a great time for us to offer him wishes well wishes for the future Senator thank you for your public service for your support of this Alma moer [Applause] we also have we also have members of the University of admin of akran administration guests and a special to the spring 2024 graduating class of the btal College of Arts and Sciences graduates you are the primary reason this University exists and we thank you for trusting us with your higher education you had many options from which to choose and we sincerely hope your acran experience has proven that you chose wisely in addition to conveying our gratitude we want to thank you or we want you to know that we are appreciate and applaud your accomplishments here through great eff effort and perseverance you have seized opportunities to broaden and sharpen your thinking expand your worldview attain professional and personal growth and become educated citizens now you will have more and greater opportunities to thrive to contribute and to serve my fellow trustees and I wish the journey awaiting you will be filled with good health good fortune and continued success and Will from time to time lead you back here to moer we are honored to join with your families friends and equity in celebrating this important Milestone congratulations thank you graduates you entered this building today as students and you will leave as alumni before that transformation takes place it's appropriate to hear from a representative of the class of 2024 accepting that responsibility for this evening's ceremony is AA B before I call you forward allow me to tell you a little bit about this very exceptional student Alia graduates today from the Buckle College of Arts and Sciences with a Bachelor of Arts and philosophy she is a Williams Honors College scholar she's had an extremely positive career she graduates with a 3.64 grade point average and was named to the President's List and Dean's List multiple semesters she was deeply involved in the UA Campus Community both as was a leader and a member of student organizations she was the 2023 24 undergraduate student government president and also served as president of the environmental action Club Ali was a member of the dean team the pre-law society Muslim Student Association the turfer score dance club and AK rowes she received multiple Awards including the canary award caner award for social justice engagement from Senator Sher Brown and the president's volunteer service award for completing 100 hours of volunteer work in a single year Alia is very involved in the community as a judge of the Ohio speech and debate Association a co-founder of the reaching reading tutoring program an emergency department volunteer at Suma health and a dog walker for for One of a Kind Pet Shelter most notably she served as an intern at the white House Office of clean energy last summer showcasing her commitment and steadfast passion to the environment after graduation she plans to attend law school her parents are Dr muraba and AA baa of Westlake Ohio and I've had a chance to get to know a very well this last year as her in her role as president of the student body and I want to congratulate her and wish her all the best in the future she'll be a wonderful you Alum representative everywhere she goes please welcome ala [Applause] B good evening friends family faculty and fellow graduates of the University of akan bookle College of Arts and Science es I'm incredibly humbled and honored to be standing here before you all today to reflect on the experiences of the class of 2024 it's hard to put into words all of the things I love about our wonderful University from the beautiful orange and red we see in the leaves in the fall to the sunsets we watch through windows in the residence Halls this place feels special in a way different from any other before I came to college people would tell me that these memories would never leave that the friends I would make would last a lifetime that I would look back longingly on my four years and find myself wishing it had not gone by so fast the idea of calling another place home was a foreign concept to me I'm sure you all can relate when I say that I had no idea the profound influence the University of akan would have on me as a person this university has given us everything we could have asked for and more it has equipped us with knowledge we will carry forever and instilled in us a dedication to support one another and always look out for our fellow Zips our connection to UA is undeniable and this university has become a part of our identities and has shaped us into the people we are as we sit here today at our graduation the sensation is surreal as a collective our class has been through so much when we began at the University of akan Campus was quite different from the way it is now despite the challenges we all faced we have succeeded in not only bringing life back to the university but also connecting with one another all while working hard to earn our degrees it's difficult to capture the Sentimental Feeling that resides within each one of us our undergraduate career has come to a close we have attended our last classes studied in beer for the last time and walked through the Split Rock for a little bit of luck now we look forward with anticipation as this next chapter begins this university has given us so much instilling in us a profound sense of belonging to something greater than ourselves we know that feeling well but only because our time at UA has shown us the reality of this phrase belonging to this community has empowered us to recognize the significance of human connections as we move forward we should be fiercely aware of the strength of our voices and our ability to inspire change as individuals we are impressive but together as a community we can accomplish so much more the world we live in has continued to change as we've grown up whether it's better or worst is subjective but I believe the single most important thing we can do is proceed through life with compassion as the guiding principle that we follow as our success in life continues let us move let us remember to extend a helping hand to ensure that no one gets left behind although we will all walk across the stage today we are not walking away from this place that we call home whatever we do and wherever we go a piece of us will always always remain here and a piece of the University of akan will always remain in our hearts thank you and go [Applause] Zips thank you are so congratulations graduates want to let you know that one of the uh best things about being a University College president is you get some to have some last words of advice to you before you head out to the world this is particularly a a good pleasure for me today because a lot of you many of you perhaps started at the University of akan about the same time I did so we've all been here for the same period of time and I have to say with the challenges that we faced Co and others I've been in higher education for over 40 years and I've never seen me a more resilient courageous Innovative and positive graduating class but I still I'm still going to give you some advice so I've got 10 pieces of sagacious advice to give you before you go out number one you received an excellent education at the University of akan we're confident of that but remember this the most powerful tool that you have in deploying that education in the world is empathy people who are sensitive to the circumstances of others are the ones that solve big problems number two unfortunately you're going to find a whole bunch of people in the world who will dismiss you ignore you take advantage of you show you outright disdain if you want to develop skills at dealing with people like this this get a house cat you'll have the opportunity to deal with rejection every day of your life number three civilized societies Embrace a common good this comes from mutual respect from taking care of one another and from lending a hand to those in need nurture this precious Commonwealth through a life of service number four despite what you may have heard there is such a thing as truth as an educated person it's your obligation to seek it as an educated person that's your obligation to speak it number five if you want to persuade someone of something the first thing you have to do is listen to them very carefully you have to understand the other person's perspective even if you disagree with that perspective the only way to get the person to understand you is for you to understand them number six be optimistic after all it is theoretically possible that the Browns will win the superbow number seven some of you are going to become billionaires when you do please do not spend your money building rocket ships we got enough of those guys already instead buy yourself a nice car and give the rest of the money to the University of a it it's worth a shot number eight the very best way to inject yourself into a conversation is to be a scholar ask a question everyone enjoys talking to people who are curious number nine the single most important characteristic of successful people is they don't believe they've stopped learning keep learning only way to proed and number 10 love is not a thing Love is Everything find love give love and this will make you happy congratulations to all of you take care of one another and remember you're always a zip I now invite provos wsy to come forward and supervise the awarding of degrees good evening everyone we will now begin to confer upon our graduates those degrees for which they have sacrificed and labored so intently over the past several years the Spring Class of 2024 at the University of akan consists of 2,18 candidates from 29 States in 41 different countries they range in age from 17 to 69 and it includes 40 candidates for the Doctorate Degrees 93 for jurist Doctorate Degrees 267 for master's degrees 1,390 for bachelor's degrees and 318 for associate degrees today we are gathered in formal convocation with those candidates from the bookto College of Arts and sciences and Dean Mitchell McKinny as we recognize and confer degrees upon these candidates we will proceed by acknowledging those that have earned doctoral degrees then master's degrees and then undergraduate degrees as each candidate has their name called we do ask that our guests please be respectful of the occasion so that each candidate may be duly recognized for their accomplishments graduates I would like I would now like to invite your college dean forward to provide brief remarks before the conferral of degrees Dean mckenny would you please step to the podium and address your [Applause] candidates good evening graduates it is indeed a great honor for me to serve as dean of this amazing college and on behalf of our faculty and staff who've guided and supported you along your journey I'm very pleased to congratulate you on this significant accomplishment tonight now bookal college graduates your achievement continues a long and proud Legacy of this great University tonight you're taking part in the University's 233rd commencement ceremonies the very first commencement was held in 18 1973 where the Bachelor of Science degree was conferred upon just four students the very first graduates of bookal college now it's your turn this evening you join with more than 750 degree candidates upon whom we will confer an Associates Bachelors Masters or doctoral degree of bookto College of Arts and Sciences in just a bit you will begin a new exciting chapter in your life as you turn those tassels from right to left becoming the latest graduates and proudly joining our college is nearly 95,000 living alarms so you've done it your hard work many many hours of studying all those exams and papers and projects have all paid off and you should be very proud of this achievement but keep in mind your graduation this evening is not an ending it's just the beginning of an exciting Journey a journey that I hope will be filled with great success and many more achievements but as you Embark upon your career and life's work you will most certainly face some difficult challenges and setbacks I'm confident however that with the education you've received you will be successful I often say the magic of a liberal arts and sciences education is that broad-based mult multidisciplinary education Global in scope that you Reed from all those gen Ed courses the purpose of such an education is to prepare you to navigate uncertainty and imagine the unknown that's right our task has not been to prepare you for careers or jobs that currently exist or may not even exist in five or 10 years but to prepare you for careers and success when facing those challenges that are currently unknown now in imagining that unknown and confronting those challenges you will find yourself you will come to learn who you truly are and what you're capable of doing as you shape the future and I know you will be capable of making this a better world for us all you embody our book to college motto that we change lives that change the world so bookal College of Arts and Sciences graduates let me leave you with just a the few words that were spoken at that very first now alumni of the University of akar and I want to ask Mr William Coleman class of 2008 and 2010 an assistant vice president of alumni relations and executive director of the Alumni Association to the class of 2024 you did [Applause] it your time as a student has come to an end and you will soon walk out those doors a proud graduate of the University of akan before you do know that you are joining a community of more than 180,000 talented Dynamic and accomplished alumni spanning the world akan alumni have played an important role in the success of this institution since its founding over 15 years ago as executive director I encourage you to continue this tradition to stay engaged to stay connected from recruiting new Zips to mentoring current ones and by joining us for the many alumni events that we host including this October for your first homecoming as an Alum lastly graduates seek the joy in this place and the people and the ideas that had introduced you to and wherever your path after today takes you remember you are forever a zip on behalf of all University of Aran alumni here and abroad I am pleased and very honored to welcome you all as members of the University
