A Day at Wrigley: Meet the Wicks! June 29, 2024

afternoon baseball is still a tradition at Wrigley Field in Chicago it's a throwback to the days when the Cubs only played Day games because there weren't lights at Wrigley their first night game at home didn't happen till 1988 53 years after Cincinnati hosted baseball's first night game and the team had to threaten to move out of Wrigley to force that issue but it is a special place I got to a game recently and settled in to watch the visting St Louis Cardinals take batting practice a young woman sat in beside me and said this is the Cubs family section but you can stay I won't tell hello Megan Wicks the wife of Chicago's starting pitcher that day Megan and Jordan Wicks were high school sweethearts from Conway Arkansas she was 16 he was 17 they got married two years ago and traveled together through the minor leagues with all the usual stops South Bend Knoxville de Mo Wix made his major league debut last year coming off an injury this was his first start since Jordan pitched into the second inning when with two outs the trainer came to the mound and beside me I hear Megan oh no no no no Wix left the game no one knew why Megan as a relative newcomer didn't yet know what strings to pull to gain access to the clubhouse during a game well one of the ushers did and he dutifully returned and reported the news Jordan had a strained right oblique and would be returning to the injured list for anywhere between two weeks two months Megan was relieved he was alive at least when the game was over she thanked me for my company I wished her luck and said that I'd track the progress of her husband and I will because these little drama are playing out all around us all the time it's a big part of what makes the game so interesting [Music]
