Longhorns once again Texas football their first game back since January beaten up on Colorado State taking care of business like they were supposed to 52 to zero or ass whooping right all of that and more on today's episode of lock on Longhorns Park of the lockdown podcast Network your team every day man that was special right like you wait so long the offseason is so long and you got you know spring practice and the spring game and fall camp and all of this what I think is going to happen and then you finally get to see Texas back on the field BVO you see all the players in the suits and then you see the players out there making plays so it's just crazy you know that we waited all year you know when we finally actually get to see the Texas Longhorns on the field and they certainly showed up showed out and showed why they're a top five team in the country coming out and shutting out a team in their first game that has not been shut out since 2013 without Colorado State put up somewhat of a fight you know what I mean like they ran the ball well and that's a team with some Talent you know I'm sure in their respective uh conference they'll be able to do damage but they were just no match for the Longhorns today once again 52 to zero a great start to the season and a great ride of momentum into next week which will be you know one of the toughest games of the season going against Michigan so you know during the game you know this is kind of my immediate reaction after during the game I'm just writing down stuff that I saw and you know these are my random but not so random thoughts on what we saw in the first game back for Texas in eight months the first thing is you know I thought Sark started off really well with all the eye candy and the formations right you know the play action uh the rpos uh the screen passes you know getting the ball in space to our Playmakers and letting them get out there and you know do what they do in terms of run after catch last year we were top 10 in run after catch and it seems like you know that's going to be uh you know a huge part of our offense this year as well you know going from you know 12 Personnel to three wide receivers on the field sometimes four wide receivers on the field uh you know all the motion in the back field with the running backs just gave Colorado State so much to think about right and at one point I think we scored a touchdown on like seven straight drives or six straight driv something like that so uh Sark really was in his bag and you have to believe that he was still a little bit vanilla right he had to save something for Michigan and some of their bigger opponents uh throughout the season so I thought Sark really came out and you know kind of you know showed why he's one of the best best you know offensive Minds in the country with all of the Motions the formations the rpos the play actions the screens just really what he put on display even though he didn't have to against an opponent like Colorado State you look at the running game right because that's what's going to be a big question without Cedric bter without Christian Clark how could this team come out and run the ball and I'm sure that you know most of us felt like okay they'll be able to run the ball at a high level against Colorado State but how can you project that throughout the rest of the season I think jadden blue and Trey Weisner showed that they can carry this running game right like they can be the two forces you know for this running back room and carry Texas as far as they want to go in the running back room when you looked at it 133 total yards combined Jayden blue had you know a couple drops one drop for sure and then another you know catch that he probably should have made uh I think you know the kind of the ground caused the fumble or you know the ground caused a drop in in that scenario but they both looked explosive right and the question was could Jaden blue not just be a speed guy or a complimentary guy but could he be the number one back I think he looked like he could do that and I think Trey Wisner looked very explosive behind him and then you talk about Jared Gibson at that third running back spot he came in you know in the second half and looked really good as well so you know Sark has never given us a reason to worry about this running game obviously injuries are bad and Cedric bter is a hell of a talent and Christian Clark is a hell of a talent as well as a true freshman but based on what I saw against Colorado State I think I'm perfectly fine with Trey Weisner Jared Gibson and of course Jayden blue you know kind of carrying this run game throughout the remainder of the Season Isaiah Bond wow you know one of the most coveted players in the trans transfer portal and he looked special today he certainly looked like a number one wide receiver and you could see the chemistry right you could see you know Quinn you looking for him when he was out there on the field right you know they're gonna make magic this year but you know that's Quinn's new Xavier worthy right when in doubt where is Isaiah Bond or when is Xavier worthy you know where is Xavier worthy where is Isaiah Bon excuse me we certainly saw that today and that touchdown that he caught I mean was just special in terms of going inside breaking off that route he got his face mask pulled still broke him off created three to four yards of separation and obviously you know qu just dropped it in the bucket uh but Isaiah bom looked really good today you know we didn't need him a bunch he didn't play you know after the middle of the third quarter but yeah he looked like a number one wide receiver and that's what I wanted to see because coming from Alabama you know they had a bunch of guys that you know kind of all were just onea right you know they're mostly focused on the running game and jayen milro running and then throwing deep but could he replace Xavier worthy and be a guy that catches 80 90 passes and go for over a thousand yards in this offense and you know so far so good against Colorado State I thought Matthew golden looked like a number two wide receiver right we're kind of you know talking about what that rotation would be or who would come in and you know who would be the first three on the field if you're not going to rotate a bunch of guys who would be the guys you lean on in crucial situations right he had 50 yards two touchdowns had an amazing you know nol look touchdown thrown to him by Quinn uers and then there were a couple more plays where he was just open right he does such a good job of of getting open and you know making plays whether it's in the slaughter on the outside and so if you're looking at that hierarchy for sure you know I think if it's you know not Isaiah Bond he's not open then it looks like Quinn Ys is going to be going to Matthew gold and I think he looks like the number two wide receiver in this offense right now he looks special against Colorado State and then Ryan Wingo right we talked all offseason about Ryan Wingo a true freshman how he just looked mature right he came in and just looked like a mature wide receiver that had been on campus for years 62 210 coming out of high school already had the frame to be a you know really good wide receiver at this level and then he leads the team in receiving right and his first actual game as the Texas Longhorn leavs the team and receiving with over 70 yards catching passes from Quinn yers and Arch mannon so you know all offseason we talked about the five stars and how Ryan Wingo was special from the moment he stepped on campus and yeah he looked apart certainly today but I thought all the wide receivers looked good nine different players caught a pass in the first half alone that didn't include Silas Balden who ended up catching you know the the pass for Arch Manning's first touchdown DeAndre Moore I don't think he caught a pass at all and then Ryan niblet had a Jet Sweep in the first half and then ended up playing you know in the running back role in the second half but you talk about you know Isaiah Bond Matthew golden Silas Balden jont T Cook you know DeAndre Moore even though he was just out there running routes right and then Ryan Wingo they all looked really really good at the wide receiver position then you talk about the tight ends gunar Helm had that big huge play at the beginning where Quin you was just dumped it off to him he broke two tackles and you know went for 33 yards uh Amari nblack you know looked good Juan Davis touched the ball and then of course you got Jordan Washington behind them and then you all you know you got running backs and Trey Weisner and jadden blue who do a really good job of you know catching the ball out of the back field so um just so much talent you know in our pass catching group but you know certainly the wide receivers a big question was how would we going to be able to rotate them how are we going to get them you know all involved how are we going to keep all of them happy you're not going to be able to rotate them as much as you did obviously against Colorado State today but it shows that you know we're pretty comfortable with you know our top six wide receivers whenever they're in the game right they all can make plays for Quinn yers at the quarterback position and then you want to talk about Quinn I thought his three touchdowns were really good did start off the game a little bit slow there were some inconsistency there but the touchdown to Isaiah Bond waited for him to get open dropped it in the bucket obviously he showed why he could be special why he could be a firstr pick and why he could be one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League with the nol look you know Matthew Stafford es touchdown pass to Matthew golden and then on the first touchdown pass to Matthew golden just the anticipation um kind of you know fitting it really in a tight window you know over the defender shoulder in the corner of the end zone to Matthew golden for that touchdown so three touchdown passes for Quinn yers on the day really looked good and like I said showed why he's a Heisman candidate showed why Texas is a national championship Contender and showed why he's probably going to be a first round pick and a future star in the National Football League at the quarterback position quick word from our sponsors get to the money a little bit and I come back to all of these positive thoughts I got a million of them about what we saw today in the 52 to zero shutdown of Colorado State all right so we talked about Quinn you know and what he did in in the first three quarters but obviously you know when Arch Manning came in you know the Prodigy the crowd got you know loud super loud I think Nash was at the game with a decible meter only Nash would be at the game with a decible meter and showed that it maxed out when Arch Manning came in I was at the Texas Tech game when Arch Manning came in and you just notice the difference and you could see really the same thing uh you know in this Texas game terms of when Arch Manning came in it was just a different level of excitement a different level of juice in that stadium and it was a ton of juice in that Stadium from the time it kicked off and I mean prayers up to everybody that was there because it looked hot you know on TV it looked hot you know what I mean so shout out to everybody that was dealing with the elements in the stadium but like I said Arch manic came in and it just brought a different level of juice and he was special right he started off with that early pass to Jon cook jont cook you know broke some tackles got internet got a little wonky there for a little bit but like I said he threw the ball to you know jontay cook jont cook made some uh you know a couple people missed to get down the field on that big play then you just saw the athleticism where I thought he was going to take off for a touchdown but stayed behind the line of scrimmage manipulated the defense and just flicked it you know that Patrick Mahomes type style you know pass to Silas Balden for his first offensive touch with the long horns to score the touchdown ended up you know starting off five for five for 95 yards missed his last pass you know um on that fourth and seven but Arch man and really looked good and you know looked like the future right and it's just such a blessing to not only have a great quarterback like Quinn U who's lead in your team uh you know throughout the season and you know into the playoffs but have a quarterback like Arch Manning if anything were to happen I'm a knock on wood we know Quinn's dealt with some injuries right but have a quarterback like Arch Manning that can come in and just look that poised and look that special right when he really hasn't had too many game reps right I think he now only has like 11 combined passing attempts you know at the University of Texas but he certainly looked like a veteran when he came in the game and I thought he looked really good and you know like I said you know it looks like we have two really good quarterbacks at the University of Texas we talked all offseason how this is probably the best quarterback room in the country and I certainly don't think anything changed after watching that performance today when you look at the defense right we have to give the defense some credit right when you shut out a team when you win 52 to zero obviously that means there were some great defensive performances and we certainly saw that today I thought there was a leak coverage on the back end right you know uh we saw Malik Muhammad you know make a really big uh pass deflection Michael Tav Andrew makuba at the safety positions making really big pass deflections you saw that huge inter reception by J Baron he just had a great overall game uh but that amazing interception you know down the field where you know you know it looked like they were studying film for sure because you know they knew uh you know how that play was set up but they got down the field and you know just over theh shoulder tough catch right like a wide receiver J Baron made that play then I think Texas comes down and scores a touchdown after that and then of course the uh interception at the End by Wardell Matt who we flipped from Florida and judging by what we just saw in the Florida and Miami game they probably could have used him on the field today because cam Ward just absolutely torched them right but in terms of uh you know Wardell Mack making that great play at the end to reserve the shutout just amazing play on the back end all game and that's something you really wanted to see right because we didn't end the season with that on a high note and it's not just in the last two games against Oklahoma State and Washington where we got torched a little bit in the passing game there were games like TCU at times right Houston at times Kansas state right where we really were vulnerable on the back end so you wanted to see how they would come into the season looked good during the off season looked good in the spring game they really turned it up you know in this game even though it's Colorado State right you know the competition is going to go up from here outside of your other nonconference games outside of Michigan right but you know you have to play who's in front of you and I thought they did a really good job today uh love the downhill athleticism and aggressiveness from David Benda and Anthony Hill right in terms of your linebacker starting linebackers out there um just freak athletes really smart players coming down and just you know laying the Hat down in terms of the Run game and that's going to be huge you know I know that you know David Benda is a six-year you know senior and he has the experience right you know especially when you lose a player like Jaylen Ford it's good to have a player like David Bender coming back uh and really being you know as good as he was today at that linebacker position and that's going to help us throughout the season you know in terms of being one of the best defenses in the country and you just talk about a young Prodigy and Anthony Hill who's one of the best defensive players in the country and certainly you know continue to Showcase that today in a bigger role you know last year he was in that off ball role playing next to Jaylen Ford now he's the guy right he's wearing the helmet communication on defense he's the guy on the defensive side of the ball the quarterback on that side and he certainly showed it today like I said him and you know David Bender were just shot out of a cannon coming down the field uh just making huge plays in the running game right even though you know the running back ended up with over a 100 yards and I thought he did you know a really good job Colorado state did a really good job of getting him to the second level there were times where the linebackers just really shut him down and didn't let him get past that and then they made a couple tackles for a loss in the back field the defensive line absolutely got after them on passing Downs right you know I mean let me look at it and see how many passing yards they ended up with 74 total passing yards on the day between two different quarterbacks that's just an amazing job by the defense as a whole but it's not just the secondary right that's the guys up front Trey Moore Colin Simmons Vernon Bron Alfred Collins uh Ethan Burke Justice Finley like all of those guys I don't have to name the whole room right but all of those guys just continuously got after the quarterback and just you know for both of those guys you know both quarterbacks that they played uh just made it a really tough day right not only were they dealing with the heat from the sun right they were dealing from the heat with P Kowski and his group all damn day right and like I said they only amassed 74 total yards passing with one of the best wide receivers in the country right Tory Horton who's cly certainly gonna play in the NFL five catches for 31 yards right so he was the one guy you had to stop on the offense and they certainly did a good job of that but they pretty much stopped everybody else outside of Justin Marshall in the running back room you have to love what the defense did and like I said anytime you shut A team out anytime you win a game 52 to zero there's game balls to go around right right on offense and defense but I thought the defense really showed out today a bunch of tackles for loss they just really got after it and then in terms of you know um being able to um make plays in special teams right I know at the end Silas Balden got a little aggressive you know and he dropped that ball that almost you know allowed them to score because they would have picked it up on like the three or four yard line he made a really big play you saw Matthew golden make a really big play in terms of the punt return and kick return that's going to take so much pressure off our offense right when you got silz Balden who can you know break a pun or kick return for 40 yards at any time Matthew golden who can break a punt return and kick return for 40 yards at any time that's just less you know offense that you know Quinn Y and his group has to produce so and it's always going to put you a little bit closer to being in field goal range where you have one of the best kickers in the country in Bert Auburn or just being on that side of the field where you have so many options with Quinn ERS and like I said you know eight nine 10 plus pass catchers running backs tight ends and wide receivers that can go out there and play at a high level for the University of Texas now a couple things that we need to clean up you know just a couple things that I noticed the offensive line early helped kill two early drives with penalties obviously you know we won 52 to Z it's not going to matter a lot against Colorado State but when you're playing against teams like Michigan Georgia right you know Oklahoma some of the tougher Road games on your schedule in terms of Texas A&M you can't have those penalties that kill drives right we had the Fall start early on a drive that led to a punt and then we had the uh snap infraction by Jake Majors that led to a field goal so that's two drives that were killed by off offensive line penalties you can't have that in some of your bigger games you can't have that you know when these games are tight right like I said obviously against Colorado State no harm no foul but in some of your bigger games that could be the difference between a win and a loss once again I thought our run defense could have been better if you're allowing a 100 yards you know to Justin Marshall at Colorado State you're allowing him to move the ball you know the way he was able to you're going against Donovan Edwards Alex orgy in that Michigan running game next week you're going against Gavin Sawchuk when you play against Oklahoma um you know Trevor etn you know when you going against Georgia you know they're going to run the ball down your throat or at least attempt to uh Florida Montreal Johnson you know one of the best running backs in the country so you're gonna play some really tough running games some really good offensive lines this year and you know you kind of let Justin Marshall from Colorado State have his way right so that's something that's gonna have to be cleaned up because if teams feel like they can just run the ball on Texas lean on that running game and kind of keep the ball in their hands keep it away from Quinn ERS and kind of you know soak up that clock right and you know win the time of possession battle that could affect Texas in the long run especially next week against Michigan when we know they're going to come out and try to run the ball down our throats with Donovan Edwards so you know it could just be you know first game back you know we'll see how they look next week against Michigan they could turn it up they could bring a different level of intensity but if the run defense looked you know looks the rest of the season how it did against Colorado State today that could be a weakness for the Texas Longhorns not having tandre swiat and Byron Murphy anymore and then you know I thought Quinn played a really good game there were a few plays he left on the field the interception you you know was a boneheaded play it looked like Amari nlack had a one-on-one situation on the right side looked like Isaiah Bon had got open on the left side I thought Quin was just holding it a little bit too much trying to do a little bit too much not noticing the defender behind him threw it you know it got tipped and then intercepted um and then he had Isaiah Bond on that wide open pass over the Middle where Isaiah Bond almost went up and got it but it was just a little bit too high for him you know and then he got hit pretty hard and then there was a play on the right side where he threw the ball out of bounds where Matthew golden was wide open against Colorado State no harm no foul but in the bigger games you know what I mean where you need these plays where you need to convert those could come back to haunt you so you know I don't want to sit here and act like Quin you didn't have a great game three touchdown passes uh really controlled the offense you know led the team to you know 40 plus points he was amazing today uh but just you know nitpicking you know because I think he's a great player and you know we're judging him as one of the best quarterbacks in the country certainly left a few plays out on the field but 52 to zero don't have much to complain about offensively defensively special teams coaching I mean just a complete match class today by the Texas Longhorns against an inferior opponent and they showed you know why they're a top five team right you have to go out there and beat the teams in front of you and they didn't give Colorado State any chance to breathe right we saw Colorado and uh you know uh North Dakota State you know a different situation so you know those games can get tight but like I said Texas did what they were supposed to do against an inferior opponent today after the break we wrap up my takeaways from a dominant performance from the Texas Longhorns today all right just finishing takeaways so much talent and depth all over this football team I mean when the backups are coming in making plays Arch Manning came in and looked great you know Jared Gibson came in and looked great um you know Wardell Mack making that interception at the end of the game the defensive line uh you know the backups the rotating players that came in you know Jermaine lay you know Bill Norton you know players like that uh you know on the offense I mean the backup offensive line was able to move the ball just so many players so much talent and depth on this team you talk about 10 plus pass catchers that looked you know great borderline Elite today uh you know this is the the fruit of the recruiting that Steve sarkeesian and his group has done they've recruited so well so much depth I mean you talk about how you know Alabama used to replace five stars with five stars right and they replace high four stars with high four stars that's what this Texas football team is doing it look like that second unit could have shut out you know Colorado State today the way that they came in and played so uh just amazing players all over this football team we've heard you know Steve sarkeesian say unequivocally this may be the best football team he's had since he's been at Texas I think we saw that depth really show at a high level today uh because like I said the backups in the third stringers looked really good a great tuneup ahead of one of the biggest games of the Season against Michigan you know I think that's really important for this Texas football team you know obviously Colorado state is not on the level of Michigan but you know you showed you know that you're a well-oiled machine going into that game and you know now I'm confident that Texas can go into Ann Arbor and compete against Michigan at a high level because of what they did today and then nothing think Texas showed why they're a top five team in the nation regardless of what happens for the remainder of the night or the remainder of the weekend you can't convince me that five teams or four teams will put on a better performance than what we saw from the Texas Longhorns today so great performance like I said from the coaching staff to the players the first team the second team offense defense special teams whatever you want to call it Texas football is so great to see it back on our TV screens and back in action for the people that were in DKR and once again we know this could be a special season and they showed us why it could be a special season today beaten Colorado State 52 to zero in their first action of the Season thank you for tuning in to another episode of lock on Longhorns part the lock on podcast Network your team every day enjoy the rest of your labor day week weekend hook them peace
