State football squeaks away with a 16 to10 win over Florida Atlantic and their home opener also the first game of the Jonathan Smith era here in East Lancing but starting quarterback Aiden sh said the offensive production simply wasn't enough I'm taking full responsibility for everything that happened today um you know you always want to come out and play play football and do what you got to do and um I feel like I tried to do that didn't do what I I'm used to doing I play football for a living and uh didn't come out and perform to my best today and that's it is what it is I take full responsibility for the Spartans scored just two touchdowns in this outing against the owls along with a safety to rack up the 16 points a lot of people didn't know what to expect from this team because of the new staff and 61 transfer players but veteran player Angelo gross said there's improvements to be made they're just happy they're 1 and0 to start the year I mean we talk about response all the time you know when things ain't going our way how we going to respond how we going to go out there and still do what we need to do so I feel like we really emphasized that and that's what we went out there and did definitely got mistakes to clean up but we're happy with to win the defense helped carry them through most of this game even helping add some points to the scoreboard with that safety but they had three chances to score in the red zone and just couldn't make it happen something that Jonathan Smith says they need to be better at I mean we got three opportunities really in the red zone that we turn the thing over don't get a fourth down conversion that's you know we're feeling quite a bit different if that's 21 points was it the prettiest win ever no was it still a win absolutely yes the Spartans now turn their attention to the terpins as they travel out to Maryland next Saturday starting at at 3:30 p.m. with the Spartans in East land singy manahan Fox 17 news
