Norville coaches show where we talk Colorado State Ram Athletics Brian Roth voice of the Rams great to be with you and H out a nice warm welcome to head coach J norval Jay how are you sir I'm doing great so good to be back uh back with football season all our good friends here at CBN pots and so good to see so many familiar faces out there and I know we kind of started off uh Sherm mentioned about U one of our great fans Jerry Rice passed away this summer and we just miss him and send our best to Carol Jean and their family and maybe Sherm could play some Elvis for them tonight you know and uh but we just want to think let the family know we're thinking about Jerry tonight yeah Jerry Rice uh is I mean look if if there was a a definition for stalwart Ram fan in a dictionary it would be a picture of Jerry Rice he was a ram fan through and through it was always here at the coaches show always leading the charge on fum song as well Jerry passed away here this summer and I dearly missed so uh the show is for Jerry yeah all right well the football season is upon us I think everybody's ready for some college football we we got a little taste last week with with with a zero week a handful of Mountain West Conference teams are playing but uh boy it is on here this weekend everybody's playing including the Colorado State Rams they'll be down in Austin coming up on Saturday afternoon to take on the Longhorns at 1:30 p.m. we'll talk and get Jay's thoughts about the Longhorns and the match up a little bit later on in the program we also as we always do have student athletes in the house with us tonight a couple of the uh the big boys that are going to be anchoring the outside of the offensive line give it up for Savon Henderson and Aaron Carris right over here we'll talk to them coming up a little bit later on in the program and uh we'll also be joined by our offensive line coach Billy best Bill best in the house tonight and we'll talk to Bill to close out the show tonight but first uh we'll talk to head coach Jay norval Jay talk a little bit about fall Camp give us your overall thoughts on the camp I know it has to feel different year number three three with you and a coaching staff that has pretty much remained intact yeah you know I think there was some stat that came out uh there's only I think 35 teams in all division one football that that have the same defense coordinator offense coordinator head coach and quarterback and it just kind of shows you the state of college football how much change is going on every year I think we're only one of two teams in the whole Mountain West that have the same head coach coordinators and quarterback coming back so it really does matter um you know we've been one of the youngest teams in the league the last two years and that was by Design you know I believe in recruiting high school kids and developing them in this you know era of transfer portal I just feel like the best players we can get our high school players and so we've done that so we've been really young but but now we're starting in year three we're starting to be one of the older teams in the league we have more experience than most every other team team now and um got a lot of guys coming back I think we have 17 starters that that uh have have started uh over 10 games which is outstanding and and uh we have our quarterback back um with a year of experience very veteran offensive line some of those guys are here tonight and so it's an exciting group of kids to coach and so we're really we've been chomping at the bit to get started yeah you talk about the maturity of this football team and and obviously you can look at that one two ways one way is obviously how many snaps guys have played you talk about the returning starters you talk about the number of snaps a lot of these guys have played how about uh off the field maybe in the locker room and and helping with the culture how does that maturity manifest itself yeah we have we have outstanding captains we we voted for captains and uh we have six outstanding captains three on defense two on offense and then Patty Turner our punter got voted as Captain again and you know Jack how Henry backer and Chase Wilson you know Tory Horton and Jacob Gardner you know Jacob Gardner's played more starts than any player in the Mountain West Conference he's got 45 starts and had over 2,000 snaps played and uh the guy right next to him Drew Moss our right Right Guard has played over 2,000 snaps and so you just can't you can't you know experience we still play a game of continuity and experience and so the more experienced your team is the more you're guys are used to playing together you know the better the better your chances of having a really good team are well fall Camp opened back uh in early August and obviously you work a lot on yourself early on now you've turned your attention towards towards Texas does does fall Camp usually go too long and you're raring to go as a coaching staff or do you always feel like we need more time as a coaching staff no I mean we're not like the NFL so we don't get preseason games and so you know it just gets it's hard to practice against yourself all the time and we don't play the Rams this year thank God and um but but you just get tired of hitting each other you know and you need somebody new to hit and so it's about that time you know it's we're we're we're ready to go we're excited to play I I'm really proud of this team the way it's prepared and and Coach Simmons is here but coach Simmons and his staff did an amazing job with these kids we're bigger we're stronger we're faster than we've been and um that's you know give coach at hand um and um you know that's been di by Design we've recruited taller players you know I think that's one thing when people come watch us practice you see they look across the field and they're like wow we got a lot of big guys out here a lot of tall players a lot of long players and Jordan's put the weight on them and now they're running really well and and you know when we got them back at the end of summer we were really pleased with what we had and so we're excited you know this is a team you know I had a lot of reporters ask me oh you had all these close games last year how you going to be better in the last 2 minutes and to be honest we want to be great from the start we want to start the game playing great and we want to play at a high level all the way through and we want to do that consistently every week so this team has dedicated itself to be its very vest and um that's what I'm so proud of them for and I'm really anxious to see him go play Saturday yep again the Rams and the longh horns coming up at 1:30 p.m. down in Austin Texas hey the good news is I mean it's been like 105 there the past couple weeks they've had rain in Austin this week and I think the high is only going to be 90s so it's not going to be sweltering down there in that Texas heat all right hey we're just getting started here tonight we're live at CBN pots colale in Ford Collins if you're around the area come on out if not uh keep it here to Facebook and the Colorado State Sports Network more to come with head coach Jay norell will'll take our first timeout of the evening right here on the Coors Light Jay Norville coaches show on the alev State Sports network from [Applause] mayerfield e e e e e e e welcome everybody back here to CBM pods restaurant and Tap Room reviv col down Fort Collins inaugural edition of the 2024 coorsite Jane orille coaches show big thank you to our friends at canvas Credit Union it's about more than banking at canvas it's about you and your goals you can join the official Credit Union of the CSU rans by visiting canvas.org Brian Roth back with head coach Jay Norville we're going to talk about the Rams offense and defense and give you a little preview about what you're going to be seeing on the grid iron this year but uh but first I I I did want to uh give a special shout out to uh John Weber director of Athletics his first show as the Director of Athletics John back there R his wife Julie back there as well and uh and also another new member to the senior Administration I'll try that again senior Administration staff's Scott Sidwell back there deputy director of Athletics great to have Scott on board wearing the green and gold and and uh certainly if you get a chance go up and say hi all right let's talk about this edition of the 2024 rans we know that you're more mature the you have guys with more experience there's continuity amongst the coaching staff and this appears to me Jay this can be an offense that uh has the potential to be very explosive and score a lot of points obviously when you return to starting quarterback that has as as many reps as Braden fer diosi does right that certainly helps how have you seen him grow from the Hawaii game final season a final game of last season to now here as he embarks on your number three yeah we were talking after practice he he's like last season seemed like an eternity ago and and I think that's really true for all of us uh so much has happened since then but you know you talk about the potential of the offense it starts with these guys up front you know um you know I think our offensive line is probably the most improved position since we've came at come to CSU and it's so important if you want a good football team you have to be good up front and we got experience and a lot of big strong guys and we have depth which is awesome and Coach best done an amazing job with those guys Braden is going to be better he's going to be a lot better and and um you know I think uh just having a year to watch yourself play you know he would watch some place and he's like I can't even believe I did that last year you know and um but but you have to go through those things you can only tell a kid so much he has to experience the hard lessons to learn from them you know and he did a lot of good things last year you know he threw for 3,400 yards um you know I'm not going to say what I normally say when I say that but but but but there's a lot of schools around here that have never thrown for 3,400 yards okay okay and Braden did that as a true freshman and so um you know he would have broke the record at several schools in the state I'll just s leave it at that anyway um but Braden is going to be much better all right he's going to be much better and he'll learn from that and you know we got to cut the turnovers in half and and and uh he's he's got a talented arm he's a he's a Fearless kid um and his teammates love him and they'll follow him and and he's got to take another step on being a really a competitive winning college football quarterback yeah I mean you mentioned the turnovers from from last year as cut those down you figure they will come down based on experience but the one thing you do notice about Braden in my time being around him is that there's a high level of confidence right doubt and and he has confidence in his arm and he believes he can make every throw out there on the field how how do you walk that that tight rope of being confident and taking those shots to not being too aggressive well he he is aggressive and that's why we like him and and uh you know and I said it last year we wouldn't have played him as a freshman if we didn't believe in him we really think he's got everything all the qualities to be a great player and uh and so he just has to be more selective and he also needs to know that you know every play isn't a go for it play and so you know and sometimes it's better to pass and and um you know I talked to him I talked to him about one of My Heroes Ted Williams who's a who's arguably the greatest hitter that ever played baseball but his his uh three had three rules of hitting and the most important rule of hitting was getting a good pitch to hit and bra needs to understand that you know you don't always swing at every pitch and and you don't go for it on every play and so that that comes with maturity and and I think he'll take a big step there this year well he's going to have a bunch of weapons to use let's talk about those outs and but it's just amazing to see Tory Horton back out there again hear this fight man how excited are you and how excited were you when Tori said hey look I'm coming back I'm not going to the NFL I'm not going to go to another University I want to play for you coach norell for the fifth straight year yeah I I mean uh Tori is is an amazing player he's so much fun to be around every day and you know that's why you coach to be able to coach kids like him he's amazing I had a kid at at Nevada who I felt the same way about Romeo dubs and he he's playing for the Packers now and I used to call him Secretariat and and I said when you're riding Secretariat you you let him go you let him run and and to tories like that I mean he's been running you know we've been around him a long time and you know Jordan and I watched him run in practice and and he looks really good and so you know it's our job to get him the foot football and and play well around him and I just think he's going to have a fantastic year you know he he came back last year cuz he wanted to have another year at Colorado State and uh he has a chance to be the first receiver to have 3,000 yard receiving years here at Colorado State he's got a chance to break Devonte Adams Mountain West record of receptions for a career so he could be the all-time leading receiver in this conference which would be amazing and so he's very very fun to watch and him and and got great chemistry together yeah I think it's uh what 45 catches I believe to to catch Devonte Adams be the all-time leading receiver in Mountain West Conference history and and really if if he puts up numbers like he did the last couple of years he has a very good shot to be the alltime leading receiver in receptions and yards at Colorado State of course both those records held by the great try to get that in the preseason to so you know I mean it's it's been a remarkable career for for Tory hord and I know I speak for all of ram M had cannot wait to to watch him you lose a couple of receivers in the spring and I think Ram fans were were like okay well how do you get to replace them but from what I've seen in Fall Camp you have guys that are fing right in whether they're uh you know sophomores that that played last year as true freshman talking about person and goodie or armanii Winfield that comes in from from Baylor of course Donovan oy of course we know Dylan coffney there's a lot of other guys other than Tori out there there yeah we brought in um uh two transfer receivers that are very experienced players Donovan Ali was at Washington State and then just recently at Cincinnati um really quality player big kid that can run and then AR Armani Winfield is really one of the highly recruited players out of the Metroplex it was at Baylor last year in the Big 12 and you know we got in a big recruiting battle with Wisconsin mhm with him and um you know we were able to convince to come and that was huge for us cuz we needed a guy that could give production away from Tori um and so he was a big get for us along with Donovan and and uh but we got you know our guys from last year that are growing up now um goody has had a great offseason Jamari Pearson has had a great a great off season those kids have worked really hard uh Dylan goff's back um you know as a compliment so we got a nice we got a nice core receivers that are working with bra and and gives him a lot of different options all right we continue to talk to head coach Jay Norville tonight on the cors Jay Norville coaches show we're live at CBM pots restaurant and tap room here in Ford Collins your press conference on uh Monday you announced that uh Jackson warrren a tight end came in from Junior College a kid who started his career as a quarterback at North Texas I know a guy that you guys were counting on uh is going to be out for the season uh how does that affect that tight end room of course you still have experience there with Vince Brown yeah I mean he was a special kid Jackson Warren he was another receiver that we brought in as a tight end 68240 and a kid that we've known for a long time and we worked really hard trying to uh bring in a tight end in this class and um I do want to congratulate down huler who made it made the team with the New Orleans Saints we found that out there today another am on of 53 rer and him and mo chimra I mean just I mean so proud of those both those guys and um but we did want to try to bring in a guy that could replace some of the production that that uh dalon had and it's just hard to do and we thought Jackson was a perfect fit he was having a great camp and unfortunately he hurt his shoulder and so um he won't be able to play this fall but we'll get him back next spring and he'll be ready for next year um Vince Brown though is a guy that's had a really a great camp and he's a guy we recruited out of DuPage Junior College a year ago another big six7 guy he's about 245 lbs now and he's just grown before our eyes and the competition with Jackson I think really accelerated his progress in Camp and he's had a great camp and so I I just am really excited about his senior year um you know Pete Montini is is our old stalworth there plays kind of an HB for us and and um you know we got some young tight ends Jordan Williams and and Mason Mau that that that are good young kids as well so that's a good position for us and we're expecting those kids to play well all right let's wrap up the offense we have a couple of the offensive lineman mentioned here tonight at Eric Carris and and zavon Henderson they're going to be the two bookends on that offensive line uh I mean savon's played a ton of football Jacob Gardner up front at center it's he mentioned 45 games in his career he has started all 45 that is a phenomenal statistic uh Drew Moss is another one of those guys who has played a ton of football so you you have good experience mixed in with some younger guys up front yeah and these guys have worked tremendously hard in the weight room as well and um you know you just we just play game of big people and and and big angry people and and and uh the bigger they are the better they are and so we just need to have as many guys like this as we can and you know as you move up in levels of football that's the difference is these guys I mean there's skilled kids at at at smaller schools all over the country they could play but but it's the big big guys that get the job done in the trenches and and U you know we got a big task this week but these guys are really prepar prepared well yeah but again the running back room much more depth y here here this fall and and uh you know van Shield did a great job for you last year but boy you have Justin Marshall Damen Henderson Keegan Hollis you have Avery Morrow Kobe Johnson I know you're a lot uh more comfortable with that running back room defensive side of the football and again congratulations to Mo cra Mo fifth round draft pick making the Dolphins 53 man roster great to see him now go and move on to the next part of his career another one of those guys that that came back another year because he wanted to play at Colorado State last year but he also takes with him 17 and a half tackles for a loss and 13 sacks there's no one guy on the roster in the defensive line that's going to take those numbers and put them on his shoulder but it's got to be done collectively right there's no doubt and and you know another transfer that I didn't mention Gabe ky's done a fabulous job at defensive end for us along with mend um as well as cam Baro uh James Mitchell those four guys up front really have to lead us in the defensive line and like you said I don't see a guy that that H that can do the production that Mo had last year but you know quite frankly we don't need that if if if we if we have if we have really Relentless pass rush and run defense and our guys play disciplined I think we can be as good or better up front and and that's what we're asking from this group we want them to play discipline you know Chuka has done an amazing job our new defensive line coach and teaching those guys and to be disciplined and and so uh and Relentless and play with great fundamentals and so I think it's definitely going to be C by committee this fall but I'm looking forward to seeing us go out and play all right d again linebacker you have Chase Wilson boom jock is one of those guys I I keep talking to folks about I mean you look at boom played last year as a true freshman I think he had 50 something tackles and uh 6'4 what 235 lounds I mean boom looks the part I know he can play the part too yeah he's he's going to he's going to make another step you know you know you see guys make so much improvement from their freshman to sophomore years and boom's had you know a year with Coach Simmons in the waight room he's he's his real student of the game he's a super intelligent kid as well not only is a great athlete but he's really smart and so is Chase you know both those linebackers are great students as well as great players and and so I'm just excited to see him play and use that length and athletic ability at linebacker yep uh and secondary we're running out a time because I want to talk about Texas and couple of dudes in the back end of that defense uh what Blackburn and how I think they have a couple of snaps under their belt those two guys are playing a little bit of college football we know about them they're going to be solid and stward once again here this year all right we are going to take a break we're going to come back one more segment with head coach Jay norell will'll talk about the Longhorns of Texas in the season opener all right stay with us live here tonight from CBM pots restaurant at taper in Ford Collins on the Colorado State Sports network from learfield e e e e e e e e here CBN pots restaurant and tap room we are in Fort Collins and it's the opening show of the cite J norell coaches show great to have everybody with us tonight's show brought to you by the green and gold G A fans if you want exclusive access to players content a limited edition merchandise you can join the guard unleash fan club at the guard unleash decom you get the guard unleash decom green and gold guard proud partner of CSU Athletics all right couple more minutes left here with head coach Jay norell then we'll talk to Savon Henderson and aaric Carris couple of tackles for the Rams and Bill Bess the offensive line coach he'll join us uh following those two about 30 minutes left we'll take you right up until 7:00 all right uh Jay 1:30 on Saturday afternoon the 2024 edition of the Colorado State Rams will get their season started and what a way to start it off number four Texas uh first off you do have some experience with the Longhorns back in 2015 you're an assist coach on that longcor staff yeah I called the plays that year and uh it's a tremendous place um you know just obviously great tradition there obviously football's very big in the state of Texas you know and one of the things that uh when I was there Mack Brown uh came and visited us and talked to us and I think Coach Brown is such a Class Act what a great gentleman but you know he used to say this there's 500 high school players that get scholarships every every year to go to division one out of the state of Texas he said only 25 of them get to go to Texas so all the other kids wish they could go and and that's a that's an interesting Dynamic when you think of it and and uh but you know it's just a great opportunity for our football team great opportunity for Colorado State to go to Austin to play in DKR um great opportunity for our players and our coaches we have a lot of players from the state of Texas uh we got a lot of coaches that have coached to Texas or or uh or from Texas and so everybody's excited to go we're not playing against Earl Campbell and we're not playing against Daryl Royal thank god um but they're a talented they're a talented football team and you know and that's what we've been trying to get our kids to understand is that you know we're playing Texas but they're they're a team that runs split stretch and rpos and and uh play action passes that's who we're playing against and and we want our kids to be to go in and play calm but very aggressive and physical with everybody that we play against yeah I think two years ago after the Michigan game we had you on the post game radio show and you said it's just kind of a situation of too much too soon I imagine you feel a a lot better two years later bringing a team that you have now into an environment like you'll be facing on on Saturday yeah that was that's hard to compare that year to anything to be honest with you um but we have bunch of committed players that want to be at CSU that that uh really have invested in this program and uh I think uh you know this is a special group the way that they've worked in the off season um the way that they prepared for this season and the way that they've come to practice you know we've really demanded a lot of energy from them and focus and concentration and they've taken the challenge on and and uh you know we've just challenged them to be their very best every single day they walk on that field and and what they do the 24 hours around the clock until they get to do it again and so it's been a great Camp so far we're anxious and ready to play and it's time for us to play and and um you know we're like most teams right now we're not a finished product you know we're going to have to grow as we play games and we go through the season and get better and we'll find different pieces and how they work with us um but I think this is a great start this is a challenging game for us obviously they're a very good team but I do think we're going to have to play a certain style of football in this game and I think it's going to help us the rest of the season and so I'm very excited that we have to play this game I think it's going to force our guys to concentrate and do certain things that a mature team has to do yeah it'll be a great measuring uh a stick game for you and your ball Club Jay thanks so much appreciate we'll let you go and sit down and get something to eat Round of Applause J orell thir year football coach here at Colorado State all right we'll be back with a couple of offensive lineman from CSU Savon Henderson and Aaron Carris join the show next on the Colorado State Sports network from learfield e e e e e e e all right welcome back here to CBN pots restaurant in tap room we're live in augural edition of the J Norville coaches show presented by Kors light Brian ra voice of the Rams back with you again appreciate coach norael for coming on the show his wife Kim in the house with the cow bill as well you hear the cow bill that's all Miss Kim norell there we go so we appreciate them out here tonight all right time for the student athlete portion of our program and I know everyone enjoys this portion and I welcome a couple of the uh starting tackles for the Colorado State Rams Savon Henderson and Aaron Carris nice round of applause for the these two gentlemen thank you thank you how we doing guys pretty good pretty good great good I like it we we always like to get the offensive line a Little Bit of Love on on the show because sometimes you guys can can be invisible and you guys were were so good last year that uh you know I think Ram fans are expecting a lot from this unit here this year Savon let's start with you um the talk a little bit about this offensive line because we we we talked about Jacob Gardner 45 starts Moss has been around a long time you have a couple of newcomers in as well and then you got some younger guys but your overall view on this offensive line unit yeah we're excited um we work really hard each and every day uh we come out with great intensity and excitement and uh we work we work hard and it's great to have me Jacob and Drew back and then add Alex and Carris here and they work very hard too and they they fit the puzzle very well yeah Alex Foster going to be one of those uh uh guards for the Rams came coming from Utah Tech saan the the transition from division 2 so you came from division 2 last year originally from from the state of Illinois you came from division 2 what was that jump like going from division 2 to division one because you seem to have made a seamless transition again starting all 12 games at at left tackle nonetheless yeah uh it was not as easy as it seemed especially going against guys like MOA it was it was hard um but he he gave great practice every day and it made it easier for the games for sure yeah you don't have to go against Mo anymore I I know that's kind of a good thing but it as you mentioned that's a guy that made you better each and every day Aaron is a 6'5 sophomore he's a local kid from Arvada Colorado prepped at Pomona High School of football Powerhouse in the Denver metro area eron talk about your journey here to Colorado State you you got I think you got in three games as a true freshman you got a red shirt year and then last year as a as a red shirt freshman you you saw some spot Duty how has your progression been here at Colorado State yeah it's been pretty crazy you know I came here with Coach norell right out of the bat so I've seen every single offensive line group so far and I you know I got a lot of faith in this o line group so far but uh yeah you know first year saw three games travel to Michigan and both of our tackles cramped up and I saw the coach the fear and Coach Bes eyes looking at me thinking I had to go in but thankfully I I didn't have to and then uh last year getting in a few games you know Oliver went down for a drive and we went hurry up so had to stay in then we drove it down the field and then Oliver came in and took me out before we scored so that was cool and then uh field goal unit that was pretty cool and then now I'm here yeah well I imagine you're jumping at the bit because I mean you are now a starter on this Colorado State offensive line and I know you put a lot of hard work into that but uh tell me what what's going through what's going to be going through your mind at Texas on Saturday when you know you're a member of that starting offensive line unit you know it's a lot of surprise I feel like uh you know I'm going to be nervous obviously but trying to keep that in the back of my head just move on and you know these are some big guys we're going to be playing obviously but just try to push through that get at get ready and just lock in we're talking to a couple of the offensive tackles for the Rams Savon Henderson and Eric Carris um saan what what are your impressions of some of the younger guys on this offensive line a guy like Aon Carris a guy like Tanner moley there's there's young offensive linemen that that are coming up through this Colorado State program yeah I love these guys they they come in every day and want to get better um they they care about us as seniors and then as a team in general they they want to win and there's nothing more than you want to see as a senior yep I want to ask you about off the field because because uh there was a great article on csurams.com mikee Brohard who uh is our main writer for css.com talked about your musical backgroundd even talks about your nickname Mr groovy does anybody really call you Mr groovy back home yes back home okay but but it hasn't got on here at Colorado State but talk about your musical background I know you're you're a drummer at heart yep uh first I gave myself that name uh no one gave it to me self-proclaimed nickname I love it and I kind of told my family when I first gave it like you guys got to call me that I'm not answering the Savon so they kind of caught on the wagon um but yeah I've been playing drums my whole life uh it's a it's a blessing to be able to do and it's something that allows me to escape from football when I want to so I love it yeah well and your drum kits back in Illinois right it doesn't doesn't make the trip to Ford Collins no unfortunately not okay all right uh Aaron do you have any self-proclaimed nicknames um or maybe nicknames that been bestowed upon you I got a good one that I think coach best and the line have given me uh just before this uh radio show I had to trim up my beard okay it's safe right safe for radio oh yeah 100% okay go for it they like to call me Amish I had a big old beard and it was kind of scraggly so okay I had to trim it up for this well well you're looking good uh all right couple more questions before we uh let you guys go uh Erin what are you studying here at Colorado State I know you're in your third year here yep so I'm studying uh sociology and concentration and criminology and criminal justice okay all right and then saon how about you I know you're you're probably going to be graduating here this year what uh are you studying uh Communications with a minor in sports management okay and what what what do you want to do following following your football career because I know you'd probably want to play after this year at the next level actually what you do uh y it's coming for your job okay well I'll tell you what here's what we're going to do um we're going to take on you but gentlemen thanks so much looking forward to watching you guys play and appreciate you coming out tonight thank you thank you okay that's Aaron Carris Savon Henderson couple of offensive linemen for the Colorado State Rams Bill best offensive line coach coming up next on the Colorado State Sports network from leader fori e e e e e e e e restaurant and Tapo corite J norell coaches show we're to our final segment here of the evening but appreciate Uh Kevin sheesley and Mark Shimmer horn for hosting us once again here this year and again uh Rams are taking on Texas coming up on Saturday at CBM Pots if you're not going to be down in Austin great place to come by and watch the game at 1:30 all right Brian Roth back with you time to welcome in our assistant coach of the week we had a couple of the offensive linemen the only fitting that we have the offensive line coach Bill best with us tonight nice round of applause for [Applause] Billy Bill great to see you and listen you're number three uh here in Colorado State you came with head coach Jay norel talk about the process of of building up this offensive line because we saw big strides from year one to year two and now now coming into year three you have a lot of experience up front yeah I can't I can't say it's been fun the entire way uh it was challenging the first year obviously but uh getting over the hump last year bringing in guys that love football and worked hard and bought into to what we were doing you know we're we're in a good place now we've got it established we've got a older group of guys and a middle group of guys and a young group of guys that are developing and they're all about football they love each other as you heard those two guys say and that's the most important thing they're guys that we went out and found and and uh they they've been all been a really good fit for us yeah they're they're terrific uh in front of the microphones as well I told both Savon and Aaron I I don't know if there's going to be a position group that's more entertaining than than your two gentlemen right there I I didn't know they talk that much to be honest with you I don't think I've heard Cara say more than 20 words in three years well let's let's talk about the two gentlemen here and and start with Savon and you know I had a chance to talk to Jordan Simmons head strength conditioning coach uh uh a week week and a half ago and one of the guys he pointed out to his that's really changed his body this year is Savon Henderson yeah he certainly has and you know you asked him about the process and you know it wasn't easy for him last year he's a really good athlete and obviously loves football had a chip on his shoulder and you know last year he'd make a mistake and he would let one bad play turn into three or four in a row and then he would get rid of it and what I've seen from him this spring is a different mentality in in the summer and in Fall Camp is if he has a bad one they all do he flushes it goes right on and and that's a huge step for him so yeah but again he's playing that important position of left tackle uh protecting that Blind Side of Braden fer Nicolosi and again part of an offensive line that only gave up 14 sacks all of last season you have drew Moss another one of those experienced guys and then of course in the middle you know with the a guy like Jacob Gardner 45 consecutive starts in his collegiate career that that's something that doesn't happen very often but to have a guy with that type of experience leading the charge at the center position I know is big it is big and um you know he's a talented player but as as talented as he is he absolutely loves football and he loves this group and for him to come back you know and and come with us from Nevada I mean that speaks volumes I mean this guy's a totally loyal guy and like I said he loves bow and we're blessed to have him yeah and again he's played some uh well he played left tackle at Nevada for you he had to play left tackle two years ago but that Center Spot you're number two for Jacob Gardner making that call calls up front so those are guys that are experienced but you are building from the recruiting ranks in the high school level one of those guys is is Aaron Caris who we just talked about talk about Aaron's progression from you know a a guy that came in as a true freshman to now a starting right tackle for you yeah uh I I think back I think back to that Michigan game when those guys cramped up and I looked at him and I thought you know what I'm not going to do this to you you today uh this may set you off on a course you're not quite ready for us so we were we were able to get him through and you know truthfully he was ready to play last year and he would have had some ups and downs as a youngster but he was always prepared and talented enough to play we just had you know some veteran guys that were able to stick together and stay healthy so it was really good for him in his development and now he's he's ready to go talking to Bill best offensive line coach here on the program as we wrap it up tonight what are some of the more difficult things for young offensive linemen to to kind of grasp and get a hold of before they can be quality starters at this level well first of all the speed of the game and we play a grown man football football is a grown man game and if you're big you got to learn how to bend and do consistently and then just the amount of calls and the chemistry that goes in involv the play they got next to you there's a whole bunch of stuff they got to get ready uh for that uh just being big and athletic isn't enough they've got to they've got to embrace the whole part of it and uh that takes time you're going to take on Texas the number four team of the nation and I was uh doing my spot charts in to deep but they got a lot of big boys up front what what do you see when you see the Texas defensive line I see a bare front an over front and underr and I see us getting after them that's what we got to go do right a I mean I don't care who we're playing yeah absolutely and and that's the mentality that this offensive line has has taken on all right Bill final thought I I know you and your family love to tr travel to State what did the best family do this summer oh my God how long is the show well you have about 30 seconds we first of all I got to tell you I work for the best at coach in football I mean family is real for us and our kids are in the offices and I I wouldn't trade that for anything so when we're off we're off and we we we spent I got a lot of mar out points and Southwest points we spent every one of them we went all over the place Florida Tennessee uh all California we went everywhere we had a great time yeah that's awesome well uh appre appreciate you coming on the program tonight looking forward to watching this offensive line play thanks so much Bill thank you all right that's Bill Bessie offensive line coach here at Colorado State University we we certainly appreciate Bill coming out we had a couple of student athletes as well it's Savon Henderson and Aaron Carris they are going to be the two tackles for Colorado State of course we appreciate head coach Jay Norvell as well all right hey who's ready for the season opener coming up on Saturday huh it's time for some football here at Colorado State University 130 Longhorns in the Rams and of course following that three straight home games at uh canvas stadium and we need to pack those Northern
