the Philadelphia Phillies wrapped up their road trip on a high note with a resounding 11 to3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Sunday securing the series win the game was a testament to the team's depth and resilience with every player contributing to the offensive explosion however it was backup catcher Garrett stubs who truly stole the show delivering a career- best performance that propelled the Phillies to their third Series win since the All-Star break heading into the game the Phillies were coming off a rough series against the Braves where they struggled at the plate managing only six runs and striking out 32 times in three games the turnaround against the Royals was dramatic over the weekend the Phillies scored 26 runs and belted three home runs showcasing a much improved offense stubs who was making his first start in a week was the unexpected hero filling in for JT real Muto who had a scheduled day off after a monster performance the night before stubs made the most of his opportunity he was a home run shot of hitting for the cycle finishing the day with a career-high four hits and reaching base five times his first at bat set the tone as he ripped a triple down the right field line eventually scoring on a Kyle schwarber double later in the game stubs added a two- strike double and an RBI single helping to drive the Phillies offense manager Rob Thompson couldn't help but praise stub's performance joking I looked pretty smart putting stubby in there today he was great the triple got us going and he just kept delivering stubs himself was elated saying it's about as good as you could ever feel obviously it helped us get to 11 runs gives our pitcher some breathing room and kind of cruise toward the last few Innings which is always good when you're trying to win a series against a really good team on the mound Colby Allard made his first start in 17 days and delivered a solid performance after a shaky start where he allowed back-to-back singles to Michael Garcia and Bobby Whit Jr Allard settled down and pitched five innings giving up two runs on solo homers while striking out five the Phillies Bullpen then took over keeping the Royals in check for the remainder of the game every Philly starter contributed to the offense with all nine players recording at least one hit Alec B who had been in a bit of a slump drove in his first run in six games and Nick costano capped the day with a two-run homer his second in his many days with the win the Phillies improved to six to four in their last 10 games and maintained a six-game lead in the NL East thanks in part to a Braves loss to the Nationals the team now heads home for a crucial homeand where they will face the AL West leading Houston Astros followed by a four-game series against the division rival Braves the Phillies will look to build on their recent momentum as they continue their push toward the postseason
