Panic spread across Sinaloa, Mexico, as rumors of
the capture of Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar, son of notorious drug lord El Chapo, led to violent
clashes. Sinaloa Cartel members blocked roads, set buses and trucks on fire, and battled the army,
causing chaos in Culiacán, the state capital. The Mexican Ministry of National Defense
later confirmed that Iván remains at large, but the damage was done. Tensions were already
high following the recent arrests of cartel leaders Ismael "El Mayo" Zambada and Joaquin
Guzman Lopez, another of El Chapo’s sons. Cartels deployed narco-blockades, a
tactic used to prevent law enforcement from responding quickly. State Governor
Rubén Rocha reported vehicles set ablaze to obstruct authorities. Dramatic footage
shared online showed thick black smoke, burning buses, and armed confrontations
between cartel members and police. This isn’t the first time Sinaloa has been
thrown into turmoil over cartel arrests. A similar chaos ensued in 2019 when El
Chapo’s other son, Ovidio Guzman Lopez, was temporarily captured but released
after cartel members took soldiers hostage. He was finally apprehended
in 2023 and extradited to the US.
