today the world of hockey and countless fans are mourning the devastating loss of Two Brothers Johnny and Matthew GD both tragically killed in a suspected drunk driving incident on Thursday night Johnny gdo also known as Johnny hockey was a star in the NHL most recently playing for the Columbus Blue Jackets his brother Matthew also a talented hockey player was right by his side as they rode their bikes along a road in Salem County new New Jersey around 8:19 p.m. a Jeep Grand Cherokee driven by Sha M Higgin struck them from behind while attempting to pass two slow-moving Vehicles police reported a strong odor of alcohol on Higgins breath and he later admitted to consuming five or six beers before the crash he has since been arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular homicide Johnny and Matthew were set to attend their sister Katie gdr's wedding just one one day later where they were supposed to be groomsmen now that joyous occasion has turned into a time of unimaginable grief Johnny's team the Columbus Blue Jackets released a heartfelt statement expressing their shock and sadness over the loss they remember Johnny as a player who brought joy and passion to the eyes thrilling fans across his incredible career from Boston College to the Calgary Flames to Team USA and most recently l in Columbus the impact Johnny gdo had on the sport of hockey was profound but it pales in comparison to the mark he left on the hearts of those who knew him personally his Joy energy and love for the game were unmatched our deepest condolences go out to Johnny's wife Meredith their young children Noah and Johnny Jr and the entire gdo family during this heartbreaking time the hockey world has lost not just a great player but a remarkable person please keep the GD family in your thoughts and prayers thank you for joining us in Remembering two incredible brothers whose lives were cut short far too soon [Music]
