Intro School districts across the nation are dealing with is a bus driver shortage. Many schools locally have been making changes that deal with the ongoing issue. In fact, Keystone local schools are now asking parents of student athletes to drive their kids to away games and meets the district superintendent saying the lack of substitute personnel in many area of the school environment has a negative effect on our district and many others. This Bill Lawrence joins us now live with a look at what's behind the shortage and what school districts all over northeast Ohio are doing to try and recruit more drivers. This is Bill Good morning, Recruitment efforts good morning. So Keystone schools are looking for drivers to help with those extra curricular runs, those away game runs, but some school districts are looking for drivers just to get students to class. So for example, here, a Cleveland Metropolitan school sent us this fire within the past week here. It's about recruitment events for their bus driver. So as you can see here, these are going to be happening through June 6. The district again, one of many in our area for schools, other districts have looking for bus drivers rather other districts have offered people the opportunity to come and try to drive a bus to see what it would be like to be behind the wheel. But digging into the numbers for you. According to research by the Economic Policy Institute, School bus driver shortage school bus driver employment continues to be far below pre pandemic levels. These were approximately 192,400 bus drivers working in K through 12 schools at the beginning of the school year in Sept 2023 down 15.1% from September of 2019. Now, the National Education Association says that the reason for the shortage is often because bus driving is not a particularly high paying job and all the hourly wages may look good. A lot of these drivers are actually asked to work split shifts, meaning they work their morning routes and then they work their afternoon routes, but they're not necessarily paid for all that time in between. Certainly a problem we've seen coming. It's getting worse. All right, Isabel. Thank you.
