Welcome To The John Kentera Show, San Diego Sports Talk welcome once again everyone to San Diego Sports Talk the John Cana show on YouTube thank you very much for tuning in we got a lot to cover after that great win on Labor Day by our San Diego Padres three to nothing over the Detroit Tigers Padres is get a well-deserved day off on Tuesday they'll resume the series on Wednesday and finish it up on Thursday before Bob Melvin's San Francisco Giants roll into town for Friday Saturday and Sunday well a lot to uh talk about we're going to get into Fernando uh but I wanted to take a look at some numbers early on here for the Padres with the win on Monday the Padres now moved to a season High 18 games over 500 they're 79 and 61 they're 38 and 32 Recap Of Labor Day Win Over Detroit at Petco Park they've got a fantastic road record this year a 41 and 29 and we've been talking a lot about you know the Padre's were playing 18 straight days they were playing 20 of 28 days well you know what even though they they lost a little ground to the Dodgers uh nonetheless Padres are playing magnificent baseball right now absolutely fantastic baseball uh over the 28 days in the 27 games the Padres went 18- nine now you think about this the Padres they had two of these trips they had to go to the east coast over the 28 days and they went 18- n and again over the 18 straight days they played they went 10 and eight now 10 and8 doesn't sound great but I'll tell you what that's good baseball this time of year guys are tired sore you're deal with injuries Bullpen getting tired starting pitchers are getting tired that's a damn good record but over a 28 days 27 games going 18- n and 10 and8 over an 18 day stretch I'll take that any day of the week no question about it with the Padres win on Monday uh Labor Day they also go to two and one in the month of September the great thing about the P they've got five total days off in the month of September so they're gonna be well rested uh and they've only got two short trips out of California they got a two game series up in Seattle and then they've got a quick flight over to take on the Arizona Diamondbacks for a series so other than that they're they're in California the remainder of the season now on Monday great crowd on hand for crying out loud on Labor Day 44,990 the eighth it's a one- nothing ball game it was played in two hours and 18 minutes uh there were a lot of stars and we're going to get into Fernando here in a minute but uh you got to start with Lis arise Lis arise uh once again had a solid ball game he went two for four he drove in the first two Padre runs he had his a stolen base and he scored a run so he was a part of all three runs scored by the Padres on Monday and he's having a marvelous year hitting 305 very much in the race for a third consecutive batting title you recall two years ago he won the batting title when he was playing with the Minnesota Twins last year he won the national league Bing title playing for the Marlins and he's right there he's right there battling for another uh batting title that'd be pretty pretty impressive but you know you look up and down the lineup yesterday not a whole lot Manny got that RBI single in the eight Jackson Merill had two more hits two for three hitting a nice 291 but a guy that I really wanted to point out and uh you know I kind of thought with Fernando coming back Mike schilt now can be kind of the mad scientist with this lineup uh he hit Fernando second on Monday but jerks and profar was out of the lineup Jake croner worth was out of the lineup until coming in late uh Wednesday it'll be interesting to see how they go about putting together their lineup I don't think we're gonna see Xander Bogarts a whole lot of shortstop maybe if the Padre's have a lead or they've got to make some switches but Mason McCoy who's been a journeyman minor league player at 29 years of age played a big part in the win on Monday and you know what he's played really really well to this point he's hitting a cool 278 now he doesn't got a lot of it bats we know that but he's making the plays defensively and that's exactly what you want uh but he played a big part in the ball game on uh Monday he ended up going two for three scored a run in fact scored the Padres first R he had a swinging bunt base hit down the third Baseline in the third inning uh the pitcher for the Tigers Brennan hany tried to make a play should have put the ball in his pocket there was no way he was going to get McCoy and threw the ball by the first baseman Spencer Tolson down the uh right field line and McCoy was able to get to second he eventually came around to score but then he played a big part in that two-run Uprising in the eighth inning uh they had Oka doubled and McCoy came up and laid just a perfect bunt down perfect bunt down it looked like the Tigers were actually surprised I don't know why they would have been surprised if they knew anything about McCoy and knew anything about how the Padre's been playing this year but McCoy beats it out and so he ended up having two hits that none of them went more than about you know 60 or 70 feet but the guys making the plays defensively but if you wanted to get a little bit more offense into the Padre lineup you'd probably put uh a rise at first base you'd put cronenworth at second you move both Barts over to shortstop and then you got tati out there in right field so Mike sh's going to be able to be kind of the mad scientist but you know what Padres are sitting in such great shape right now I mean they play 500 ball they're in the playoffs no question about it but they'd like to get that number one wild card and right now as we sit here doing this podcast they have the number one wild card you know some other notes uh from the ball game on Monday uh I let the bullpen once again was fantastic Jason Adam one inning to hit Tanner Scott dropped his Z down to 1.48 one inning to hit couple of punch outs and Robert Suarez disposed of the Tigers very quickly in the top of the ninth inning eight pitches and it was one two three gave up one hit but at the end of the day he picked up his 31st save in a one 196 erra okay let's talk about Fernando a little bit because Fernando is my guy big huge Fernando guy Fernando Tatis Jr Returns! and you're talking about a guy that's electric and you saw on Monday when he came out of the Dugout ran to right field prior to the first pitch fans went crazy long Ovation and well deserved o he was playing great baseball you know I thought he got off to a slow start this year but man when he went on the iil with that right femer injury he was absolutely on fire and really putting up some big numbers and really get into a great Groove I thought he kind of came into the year um he was a little underwhelming early on but man he was just in a in a great Groove now on Monday he went 0 for four uh he had one in B second in Bat he had like an eigh pitchly bat he was heading the count three and 0 he came back ended up striking out but it was a good quality of bat and then uh in the uh eighth inning uh he had a ball to first base with Runners on first and second was able to advance Runners to to second and third and uh you know that that was good put the ball in play to the right side nice job kind of inside out swing but it went 0 for four um I'm not expecting a whole lot the first few games I know he had a great rehab and I thought it was really interesting how the Padre's handled the rehab rather than sending him out to to play an Elenor Fort Wayne or San Antonio or El Paso they sent him back over to Arizona he got a lot of work a lot of work Outfield work situational work got a lot of bats against guys in extended spring training and rookie league guys and it's going to take a time I mean I even if you go down to double a tripa a yeah you're seeing pitching a little bit better but at the end of the day you just want to get those adats it's all about timing and Rhythm when you're a hitter and it's going to take them a little time but you know what it won't take him that long this guy's a a freak of nature he's an incredible athlete but he he's also had a lot of injuries and going forward I I have to believe the Padres are concerned because you know Fernando hasn't been making a whole lot of money he makes 11 million this year then it starts escalating to to 20 25 and in the last several years of his contract 36 million and to this point even though I think it was a really H when you look at his rookie year second year I kind of thought it was a A Team friendly contract we got to play and hopefully he can come back and stay healthy you know I was looking at some numbers you go back to 2019 84 games he had 317 with 22 homers 53 RB missed a the big bulk of the year at the end of the year because he had that stress reaction in his back and then you come back in 2020 it was a CO year he played 59 to 60 games was eligible for the other game but just didn't play hit 277 with 17 homers 45 RBI then 2021 130 games 282 42 bombs 97 RBI guy was amazing and then of course uh he got hurt and he had to have uh you know shoulder surgery and hand wrist surgery he had a total of three major operations and and come tries to come back and is getting ready to come back and then he gets the PED suspension and missed all of 2022 last year he came back 141 games most these ever played in a year is 141 hit 257 25 homers 78 RB and it it was a good but not great year for him and this year he was having a really good year after a very slow start we'll see how many games he ends up playing this year but gotta be on the field gotta be on the field uh he's a talented guy man but you got to get on the field there no question about that and that's been a big problem with Fernando okay I want to tell you about one of our sponsors right now reliable home buyers.com that uh you want to go to their houses and they'll get you calf so again their website your reliable home buyers.com and when you do give them a call make sure to tell them coach John cantero sent you and again that phone number 858 42241 16 and we thank uh reliable home buyers for their uh partnership with the johon can teror show on YouTube okay let's talk about Big Joe Musgrove Joe Musgrove has recreated himself the way I see it he has been absolutely on fire uh Joe Musgrove Continues To Stay Hot Monday Labor Day six Innings three hits two walks eight strikeouts and we're just on point absolutely abolutely on point kind of shelved his old slider that he threw a high percentage of the time his breaking ball and I know he's got this sweeper that he's working on but his curveball is ridiculous the spin on that curveball is amazing to me mixing in a change up locating his fast ball Joe is just he looks so good and his mechanics and I look at mechanics direction to the plate he's been amazing I mean his mechanics are just right there that's what you want and that's going to take pressure off the elbow and the shoulder and he just pitching really lights out right now now look listen to this Joe's first 10 starts this year he went 49 in the third Innings and he had a 566 ER and I know you know that one start was over in Korea Joe Joe likes pitching in the States you know he had that rough outing a year ago when they played in Mexico he had a rough outing this year in Korea but 49 and a third ra a 566 and a 1.48 whip almost putting one and a Half Men on base per inning okay and giving up 1.82 home runs per nine innings now think about this the reincarnated rejuvenated uh Joe musgrow completely healthy that also those numbers tell me he wasn't healthy and I didn't think he was healthy in spring training but he tried to get through it and that that was bad for him it was bad for the ball Club but since coming back five starts 27 and two3 innings a 1.30 ER and a 0.80 Whip and in those 27 and two3 innings he's yet to give up a home run I mean Joe's just absolutely on fire right now you gotta love the way he's a pitching uh I'm sure uh enjoying it and going back to uh Monday Labor Day threw 94 pitch with 61 strikes dropped his erra down to 4.09 and with the win he's now five and four on the Year dog on good effort by Joe mro just stay healthy big man okay jerks and profar to this point um is had a career year and he you know I think Jackson Jurickson Profar Gets A Day Off Mill's in this conversation I think Manny's putting himself in this conversation for the Padre's MVP but jerks and proar got a rare day off on Monday you know he battling that tendonitis in that one knee uh but he's put up incredible numbers uh he had a really rough August I mean he ended up hitting in the month of August he hit 196 in 102 at bats but that was the bad news the good news he's still getting on base in August even though he only hit 196 he got on base a 336 clip I mean his numbers at this point are just ridiculous you go back to March you got off to a a very very fast start uh 17 bats hitting 294 uh small sample size April hit 322 on base 404 May 344 438 on Base june uh 280 370 on base uh July 267 351 on base percentage and then you know a rough August and his numbers have gone down but he was on such a hot streak and his hot streak is going to lead to some pretty incredible numbers in fact if you look at his numbers with the off day on Tuesday 136 games for jerkson 486 at bats a 280 average 24 doubles 21 homers a career high he had back-to-back years in 2018 and 2019 with Texas in Oakland where he hit 20 homers but a new career high and we still got 22 games to go 881 RBI already a career high 2.8 War player J jerks and pro far welld deserved day off not only does he get Monday off he gets Tuesday off which is a good thing gota like that okay I want to wrap up the uh Dodger Diamondback series man there were a ton of runs scored in that Series Dodgers did what they had to do Wrap Up Of Dodger’s & Diamondback Series on Monday they needed to go in after taking two of the first three it was a big game for them because they they had a five-game lead over both both Arizona and the Padres started on Monday and they knew if they took down Arizona they would pick up a full two games from where they started the series on Friday night they went over there with a four-game lead over both the Padres and Diamondbacks well they took the first two games uhh Friday night they won 10 to nine got a little dicey there in the ninth inning they got uh the Diamondbacks got four runs off Anthony Banda uh and Dodgers hung on 10 n Saturday Dodgers won 8 to6 and then the Padres uh they were taking care of their business over the weekend taking two out of three in Tampa Sunday uh Arizona blasted the Dodgers 14 to3 Dodgers had brought a a young left-hander up from the Triple A and he got blasted all over the ballpark so then Dodgers are five games up on both the Padres and the Diamondbacks so a big game this it's a big game for the Dodgers because they're having their pitching problems they go out there and they put 11 runs on the board and defeat uh Arizona on Monday 11 to6 fre Freeman at two home runs and now that he's back he's starting to regain his stroke that was a big win so with the win the Dodgers now six-game lead over Arizona and they hold a five-game lead over the Padres so I wanted to mention that okay I want to tell you about our other big sponsor granetto farm and garden supply I've known Kevin gretto for a long time Grangettos.com. and he reached out to me I didn't reach out to him he reached out to me and said coach I miss your show every day I I love listening to you when I'm running around to my three different locations or meeting with clients and I wna I want to help you on your podcast so granetto farm and Gard Supply they've been in north San Diego County since 1952 ES andedo need Fallbrook and the great thing about them and and I always like to go where the good people go what do I mean by that the pros the pros go to Grand jhos there's no question about that and I made a rookie mistake the other day I had to go shop my wife's been sick and I I got stuck I had to go to a local store and I bought avocados big mistake because I don't normally buy them at a regular grocery store I go to Grand Jett because they're the best avocado around and I made that mistake and I won't make that mistake again but with that being said if you've got some problems you're trying to get something to grow or your grass ain't going right uh they'll help you troubleshoot it there no question about that why is your lawn dying I go to baseball field I get so upset when I go to baseball field I don't care where they're at anybody water in this place why is the brown spots around right field and at third base on the infield grass it just bugs a hell out of me to be honest with you but Grand jetos they they also sponsor a lot of high school baseball programs and a lot of teams around San Diego I mean they're really into it family-owned business again I've been part of north San Diego County Community for over 70 years and again you got the three locations you got enenas you got Escondido you got Fallbrook go to their website Grand jos.com today and really make sure to sign up for their newsletter the newsletter I'm learning stuff it comes out twice a month and I'm learning stuff so sign up for their newsletter it's delivered your inbox twice a month with timely tips and gardening advice let me tell you something you take this Ser you're going to learn a lot and people are going to be asking you for advice but again go to their website get signed up for the uh newsletter Grand jos.com and when you go in there and you run into you know somebody helping you make sure to tell them hey I listen to coach cana's podcast and Coach Cana sent me in today so they get a little feedback on the John Cana show and they know uh that what they're doing sponsoring our program is working gross.com all right let's uh get back to uh talking a little bit about uh the pitching matchups for the final couple of games in the the Pitching Matchups For Remaining 2 Games Against Detroit series uh again they'll resume on Wednesday night at 6:40 and we got some good news we got some really good news U darish is coming back folks um U Darvish has been throwing for about about five weeks I would say he been throwing the local high school we've uh documented that several times Monday he threw a bullpen and just a light Bullpen kind of a touch and field Bullpen just to you know feel good work on his delivery hit hit his spots nothing you know too uh um excruciating but after the game on Monday Mike Shel said you darish is starting and what's good about that it's going to give Michael King a little bit more R Michael King needs a little more R he's pitched more than he's ever pitched ever this year and doing a great job but they're going to go with uh U Darvish on Wednesday and of course you he'd been out for a long time hadn't got to a major league Mound since May 29th he left originally first with that groin injury then he was trying to come back remember he pitched that one night for Fort Wayne and high a ball then issue came up and then Bingo uh he had to leave the ball club for a personal matter and hopefully that Situation's resolved itself but you know UD Darvish was really throwing the ball exceptionally well he had a 4 and3 record with a 3.20 ER so he'll go against a young 24y old right-hander Keeter Montero Montero four and six and a 517 first pitch on Wednesday night will be at 6:40 and then Thursday final game of the is going to be at 540 on Thursday a former number one draft pick of the Detroit Tigers right-hander Casey M two and six and a 436 going against the veteran left-hander Martin Perez four and five in a 471 ra overall but with the Padres been spectacular how about this in six starts with the Padres Martin Perez two and0 and a 3.41 erra so pretty dog on good pickup I'll tell you what AJ PR right now you know he's got a contract through 2026 I don't know if he handles his contracts or if he has an agent but with the way the Padre are playing and we'll see how it factors out in the playoffs but man there are a lot of a lot of buttons he's pushed that have been the right buttons this year and Mike Shield's done a great job uh not a lot of controversy coming out of that Padre Clubhouse this year so very very good stuff okay we're going to move on we're going to talk a little bit about high school football and I think all of you know that I've been uh very much into football for a long long time in the high school ranks for 25 years on Friday High School Football Rankings nights I did a high school football scoreboard show and I still follow High School football religiously and uh we're going to go off the union tribunes top 10 I I'm a part of the Union Tribune's top 10 and we'll start with number 10 Elam know they lost the mountain view of Arizona this past weekend 42 to2 the Wildcats now one and one on the year number nine Hills number two Lincoln number three Cathedral Catholic number four San Marcus number five Mission Hills number six Mount Miguel number seven carlbad number eight Laos Canyon number nine La Hoya and number 10 El Camino now before we get out of here we're going to get to coach's mailbag we're going to go back here in a few minutes and we're gonna uh before we close it out we're going to Coach’s Mailbag give you the standing so you know exactly where the Padres sit on their off day on Tuesday getting ready to finish up those two game series uh left with the Detroit Tigers but I want to get the coach's mail bag today we haven't done this in a while uh Rachel a Vista glad you're doing the podcast but really miss hearing you every morning on the radio what are your plans to to get back on the radio five days a week for us fans well Rachel first of all thank you very much I I very much appreciate that I I'll be h i don't uh I don't really have any plans uh to get back on the radio I uh really like what I'm doing now that we're getting sponsors uh you know that's cool I think the fans enjoy this I don't have to take uh uh you know six minute breaks I I can talk right to you and with you each and every day and we can get comments and eventually we're going to get to to doing live shows we got a lot of plans for this podcast I mean once we got sponsors we can start moving in the direction we want who knows we may be doing not only live shows we're GNA be doing uh some U uh on uh on campus type uh things I mean I'd love to do some remotes uh but you know I I don't see myself going back on the radio I mean my phone's available uh but you know what I don't expect anybody to call and you know what that's okay I'm having a lot of fun uh doing this uh it gives me a lot more freedom in my life I I pick and choose what I want to do this but I try to get you valuable content uh you know there's some things I'm going to do I'm going to do UCSD basketball again on ESPN plus I'll do the strike force next year on YouTube I'd like to do some you know more college basketball or uh you know something as an analyst I enjoy doing that if they had a high school game of the week on radio or TV I love to be a part of that but you know the five days a week I I I think those days have come and gone and you know what I'm I'm fine with that the way I was let go was unfortunate and uh I I'll leave it at that okay Bob and San Carlos what did you like about San Diego State last Saturday night well I know one thing I didn't like the first half when they were trailing Texas A&M Commerce 6 to3 but they came out and played really really well uh in the second half Danny O'Neal Marquez Cooper uh defense played well but I'm gonna tell you one thing I'm I'm excited about I was reading in the paper on Labor Day Sean Lewis gonna do something a little bit different with San Diego State and I really like it I was thinking about this uh this morning before the podcast you know after you play on Saturday and like in high school a lot of times you play on Friday the coaches bring you in on uh Saturday morning check the bumps and bruises and maybe watch a little film and you know maybe go out and do a little stretch a little light run just kind of get your your muscles moving and getting you know that lactic acid working out of your body but Sean Lewis is doing something this year that I really like uh he's bringing the guys in on uh Sunday okay look at tape you know do the bumps and bruises uh and you know do a little light conditioning whatever and he's given a Monday off and the reason I like this and and I think this is as the season goes on this is really gonna help the Aztecs okay because they play Saturday night they come in they do all their they check with the trainer you know ankle injuries knee injuries shoulders whatever fingers hands whatever okay then you meet with your coaches you watch the tape of the Texas A&M Commerce game okay you do whatever you're going to do if you're going to go out and do a little light run and stretch and great and then you get those guys out of there and they get Monday off so you've already you know looked back to the last game now you let everybody focus on you know getting some rest getting up going to class don't have to go to practice Monday afternoon go home get your rest get your book workk done for your classes the next day and then you show up on Tuesday and you watch tape of your upcoming opponent and and now you're not looking back you're looking ahead and you're starting to get properly prepared I love the way he's handling this I I really do rather than giving the guys a day off Sunday and then they got to come in they're all stiff and sore because they've been laying around their apartments or their dorms you're getting them up moving them around right after the game and then you give them Monday to focus on school and kind of get their week organized I I think this is really going to help the Aztec long term this this is brilliant not that he's the first coach that's ever done it but I I think it's brilliant we used to do this in high school football but the reason we did it that way is you couldn't bring guys in on Sunday the coaches would work on Su we' be looking at tape on Sunday which you know the wives and girlfriends always look out of the corner of their eye why are you guys going in at five o'clock on a Sunday to break down tape for five hours because that's what we did but I I really like after they play Saturday bring them in bumps and bruis is taken care of let them meet with the trainer meet with his coaches look at some tape at the game the night before go out stretch light run and get them out of there and they don't come back until Tuesday I I'm all for that that that that's a really good thing that he's doing okay a couple more Michael and Powe coach thanks for the podcast you had such a tremendous run as the general manager of the soccers would you like to be a GM again um I did have a great run uh and boy I'll tell you I had a lot of fun met a lot of great people and we had a historic run winning those 48 games in a row which is going to probably be a record that stands for a long period of time uh in U major or minor Sports United States the soccers while I was a GM we won 48 in a row and but there were a lot of great players that played a part in that a lot of great coaches and our trainer Paul Savage and his staff they played a part in it I was a small part of it but we were able to put together a heck of a a run 108 and 22 I think my record six playoff appearances six years five division titles three League championships it was a hell of a run very proud of that very proud of that would I like to be a GM again yeah I guess if the situation was uh uh the way I would want it you got to have some winning people around you you just can't go in there uh you only win with great people and uh you know the other thing that I wouldn't mind doing I wouldn't mind being an athletic director not necessarily of a college but a private high school and build a program that's something i' be I've always kind of been interested in hiring great coaches to work with young athletes and get those athletes better uh that' be something I would definitely be interested in uh but as far as being a GM those opportunities few and far between again the one thing that I've never ever done in any of my jobs that I've I've never gone out and applied for a job to get a job if people want me they they give me a call maybe that's an arrogant attitude but I've just never been a self-promoter and I know in the radio and television business that's probably hurt me where I'm not the the loudest voice I hey if you want me to do the games great give me a call I'd be happy to do the game I love doing games I love working in the sports industry okay one last one uh Michelle and point Loom thanks for doing the podcast San Diego sports fans need to hear your voice what happened to you at the station that let you go was disgraceful and out of uh and out of touch with the fans somebody should have lost their job on that thank you well uh Michelle you said it I didn't but um I think most people realize uh there there was a mistake made but you know I'm not going to I'm not going to sit here with sour grapes I'm enjoying my life I'm I enjoyed my life a great deal I work with great people on this podcast and and very much uh happy about what we're doing right now but you know what I'll I'll let you folks decide if it was a mistake or not uh I think it was considering I was number one in the the ratings in my time slot and everybody knew that but U hey everybody's got to make their uh make their way and people do make mistakes all right before we get out of here let's take a look at the Major League Baseball St standings for the National League West and then we'll give you the Wild Card let's take a look at the West the uh the Padres are right NL West + Wildcard Standings there now I don't know with 22 games to go I don't know if they're going to be able to overtake the Dodgers I would have to say probably not the Dodgers sitting at 83 and 55 they're playing 601 baseball uh Padres sitting at 79 and 61 five games back playing well Arizona playing well until they ran into the Dodgers over the weekend dropping three out of four Diamond Backs at 77 and 61 uh six games back and then you got Bob Melvin I watched those press conferences from San Francisco and Bob Melvin he he's having a rough go right now 68 and 70 15 games back they just can't sustain being over the 500 Mark then you got the Colorado Rockies at 51 and 87 uh 32 games back I wouldn't mind being the general manager of the Rockies SCH smi's good guy I coached against Bill schmidth uh many years ago but uh uh you know I'd like to take a bad ball CLP if I was a general man I like to take a bad ball club and try to make them good I can't believe how bad the white socks are but anyways let's get to the uh the wild card here and take a look Padres is right now sitting in great shape three and a half games up in the Wild Card uh Diamondbacks two and a half games up Atlanta it's been a struggle all year long for the Atlanta Braves at 74 and 63 they're Hanging On by a thread right now Francisco Lindor in the Mets are red hot they're 74 and 64 only a half game back of the Braves right now uh don't rule out the Cubbies they're playing good 71 and 67 three and a half back Cardinals back to the 500 mark five and a half back and then you got the Giants six and a half back Cardinals still that Cardinal team could get hot even though there's some warts on that roster uh they could get hot but right now Padre is sitting at the number one wild card in the National League and that's the way they want to end it so uh everything going well and I'm just really happy the Padres are getting a day off on on Tuesday they need a day off big time well we're gonna wrap it up and again we'll have another podcast coming out on Friday uh Friday will be our our day this week and we'll get you ready for that
