Is Geek & Sundry Trying To RECREATE Critical Role...Or The Next Dimension 20?

geek and sunry tries to recapture the magic of critical role with a new actual play series this is sagas of sundry goblet mode geek and Sury the original home of critical role where Felicia Day first brought the group of nerdy voice actors who played Dungeons and Dragons to our screens has returned from a nearly year-long Hiatus of videos with a brand new actual play series but can sagas of sunry goblin mode recapture the magic of critical role and help push the channel back up the YouTube charts or will it just join the list of short-lived actual plays to come and go in the wake of critical role leaving the channel so many years ago why not take a couple seconds to hit those like And subscribe buttons to help us keep making these videos and then let's take a look at Goblin mode and the strange history of actual plays on geek and sunry oo so mysterious so let's briefly talk about the history of Geek and Sundry for just a minute geek and sunry was a Pioneer in the world of AC ual play the original home of critical role for much of their first season and a time so long ago critical role had a whole other person on the cast and even before critical role they had Titan's grave with recent critical role critic will weaton as the DM which was one of the very first high production value actual plays on YouTube also fun fact it starred critical roles own Laura Bailey as a cast member before she was on critical role but when critical role hit the channel it exploded on Twitch and YouTube almost instantly and to this day Remains the highest viewed videos on the channel but in 2018 critical R split off from Geek and sunry and by the start of the second campaign they were not airing content on geek and sunry at all since then geek and sunry has made multiple attempts to try and capture that magic again with new actual plays and while some have gotten solid views like their Pathfinder based Knights of everflame which lasted for two short 8 episode Seasons to their vampire the Mas parade based La by night which also Drew good numbers but was eventually taken back over by the world of Darkness YouTube channel they could never really capture that critical role magic Felicia Day who had founded the channel and convinced critical Ro to start streaming on it had left the company in 2016 and will Wheaten followed not too far after and in fact had to actually sue the new owners of Geek and Sundry for allegedly trying to cut him out of his profits from his popular Titans grave actual play and after one final attempt at actual play success based around the popular We're Alive podcast with darington press's own Ivan Van Norman as a GM the channel basically went dark for a year completely giving up on the YouTube game but now Geek and Sundry is back from their one-year Hiatus with a new actual play and what could be a whole new ecosystem of actual play shows to come with sagas of sunry goblin mode the sagas of sunry bit certainly seems to be setting up the idea that sagas of sunry is the overarching brand and then Goblin mode is just the name of a season very much in these same mold as Dimension 20 does with their actual plays and after watching the first episode of goblin mode it becomes clear that after years of trying to copy or tweak that critical role style uh geekin sunry has turned to Dimension 20 for inspiration instead and it seems to have largely worked out Goblin mode both plays and looks like something to mentioned 20 would do from the much smaller cast size to a GM screen and player screens it looked like they might have been pulled straight from the set of Dimension 20 Burrows end Goblin mode has embraced that more intimate style of actual play that Dimension 20 perfected with shows like Misfits and magic in fact Danielle Radford from Misfits and Magic is part of this new cast along with Amy voro probably best known for uncontrollably laughing through every appearance on every Dropout show she's ever been on as has the show's DM and two former Nerdist and geek and Sury staffers filling out the show's small three-player 1dm cast Goblin mode feels very much like a campaign based around the henchmen of the characters from Dimension 20 escape from the blood keep these are often hilariously inept underlings of a recently defeated Necromancer who are just trying to make their way out of their Master's ruined layer the show basically Embraces the concept that sometimes failure is more interesting than success UC with the first episode ending with the party basically fleeing from a mimic after a battle gone terribly wrong and Amy voral is an excellent DM for this journey finding a nice balance between letting the players try some pretty wild things while also keeping the whole thing grounded in the actual mechanics of the game which is based in D and D Goblin mode even features an after show that seems remarkably similar to The Adventure Party videos you'd get after a dimension 20 show so their new strategy seems very clear move on from critical role by trying to adopt the style of Dimension 20 Goblin mode really feels like the dimension 20 mini campaign That Never Was and if this is the beginning of a whole series of these smaller campaign set under the sagas of sunry brand that could be the recipe to finally see Geek and Sundry claw its way back up the actual play totem pole currently the first episode has over 10,000 views in 2 days which is pretty good for a brand new actual play on a channel that was effectively dead for a year so maybe geek and sunry will never capture that full critical roll Magic on their Channel again but if they could pull a little bit of that Dimension 20 magic over instead that might be just enough to get their actual plays back on track for the first time in years so what do you think are you down to give Goblin mode a try do you think the dimension 20 style of actual plays is a better fit on geek and sunry let us know in the
