but firefighters and school district officials are astounded that a construction worker who cut through a live hydro line with a shovel is still alive the accident last night had emergency crews rushing to Vic high after two explosions and a fire broke out in the school's electrical room CTV's stephen andrew has the story there is a feeling of disbelief as inspectors and workers scare into a hole on the construction site at Victoria High School how could anyone survive cutting through this charred hydro line that up until last night carried thousands of volts of electricity and unfortunately one of the gentlemen working here in installing a stake for the temporary fencing struck they main electrical line the cut blew apart a hydro transformer just meters away from the worker setting off a chain reaction there is an explosion in the main hydro room on an extension of the school that's just been built there was a fireball and miraculously the worker survived today crews are cleaning soot from the electrical room as electricians replace wiring and breakers destroyed in the fire the explosion forced officials to cancel classes for today as the school was left without power the worker who struck the hydro line declined our request for an on-camera interview today saying he was still in shock from the incident and the explosion it could have been very serious we're thankful that the individual was not seriously hurt but obviously there was there was potential here for serious injury the man who cut the hydro line is a supervisor of the construction site the district says an investigation is underway to determine what happened but it believes the cable was buried far enough underground damage is estimated between fifty and a hundred thousand dollars and classes are expected to resume on Tuesday Stephen Andrews CTV News Victoria
