the US Open is rolling on with day five of action underway there was a major upset on day four and there are some intriguing matchups for the evening session here on day five so time for some tennis talk we're going to do it with a reporter for NBC local also a former pro tennis player my good friend Julia El Baba joins me now Julia how you doing hey Dex doing well thank you enjoying some tennis obviously a huge upset last night that tennis fans did not expect but listen we got some great American tennis today I am pumped yeah I'm pumped and it's a upset like you said that nobody expected because I actually saw Carlos alcarez in person the other night on Tuesday in his first match and we saw him dominate this summer right Julia he won titles at the French Open and also Wimbledon however the men's favorite alcarez that is to win this tournament he had his earliest exit at the US Open on Thursday night falling in straight sets to the 74th ranked player in the world that is bolk Van Des sope what went wrong for alcarez in this one first of all Kudos on pronouncing that name right even medev is like I don't know how to do that I'm not going to try but a shocker indeed that one was I mean he just snapped his 15 match Grand Slam winning streak that's pretty massive he came into the US Open with a dazzling 16 and2 record he had never been eliminated before the quarterfinals in his three US Open appearances so a pretty big deal he just you know made a lot of loose errors on routine shots something we're not really used to from him and he just had like a lot of emotion out there I mean we didn't see it too much but he said his mind was racing actually in the presser he said he was playing against himself and his opponent something that no athlete wants to have to do because then your mind is just going nuts but all credit to ALR you know he's had a great season two major titles and a silver at the Olympics he's got to keep his head up he's young yeah he's still young still young still so much more for him to do in this game just disappointing to see him get bounced early I think a lot of people as I said he was a favorite thought he'd have a long run here in this tournament but let's keep it on the men's side here later tonight because now Novak jokovic he's back in action at Ash against Alexa paen with alcarez out is the joker now the favorite in your eyes to win it all and capture his 25th Grand Slam title yeah he is indeed the favorite to win in my opinion actually when the draw came out a week ago I was shocked because you had denil meddev Yanik siner and alcarez all on the same side and then jokovic on the other half and I was like okay well jokovic just needs to stay healthy which you know there is a big question mark around that um stay healthy and just do his thing and he can not easily but pretty routinely make it to the final and I think we kind of just discovered our champion with alcarez is loss yeah you would think so and then also people were trying and not trying but hoping to see if he and alcarez could face off again in the final that obviously will not be now it seems and that's the word seems like an easier path for the Joker to win it all here and make some history let's look at the lady side Madison Keys back in Action tonight she's got match up that's not easy with Elise Martens how have you liked K's form in her first two matches and what does she need to do to advance past the third round yeah Keys is playing excellent she I played against her she had such a hard flat big ball when she's serving well which she does a lot she's so hard to get past um she plays big and sometimes you know she makes a lot of also loose errors just because of how big she plays but if she's playing with big margins very tough to beat she's playing elely Mertens who was my former doubles partner actually and that girl does not miss so this is actually a very challenging matchup for keys because it's going to be a hard hitter versus someone who's very consistent very steady very mentally tough so this is going to be a big challenge but I do think keys will get through it all right you got keys coming out on top we'll see how the rest of of the field Fair still got some Americans in action on day five should be a good one that is Julia albaba does a great job covering the sport of tennis for NBC local check her out Julia always a pleasure to talk some tennis with you we will do it again soon as this tournament continues thank you so much for having me Dex can't wait anytime
