Hello and welcome to the 2023 Fencing Advent Calendar, the calendar that will allow you to learn everything there is to know about fencing at the Olympic Games. Let's go ! Wheelchair fencing has been a Paralympic discipline since 1960. It is open to all disabilities, but only athletes in category A (with trunk balance, possibility of controlling the armed arm, and the ability to move quickly), as well as categories B (having a precarious balance requiring support and some leg and arm deficiencies), have events at the Olympic Games. In armchair fencing, the two fencers are seated in armchairs. One hand holds the weapon, while the other is used to hold onto the chair. The valid surfaces of the three weapons remain the same, however, it is not possible to hit the legs. The equipment is identical to valid fencing, except an added protection which prevents the legs from being counted as a valid surface. Just like in valid fencing, wheelchair fencing is a discipline that offers many medal opportunities, but we will see this in more detail in a future video. That's it for today. If you liked the video, don't forget to like, comment and subscribe. Also, don't hesitate to share it with anyone who might be interested in fencing at the Olympic Games. See you tomorrow !
