[Applause] out if we look back to muk's match against Osaka the serve really got her out of trouble in that one hit the seven Aces but one an unbelievable amount of points on her first serve she was 80% first serves in and when you know that you're playing such a big returner like Osaka she was stepping it up every single time and I feel like she's going to have to do that [Applause] today tactically Laura what are you looking out for in this one today how much Muka can come forward I think that plays a part came in 19 times in a second round another 12 times in the last match against potapova out yeah just to highlight that at the end of the third round matches no one had come to the net more often than karolina muker in the women's side of things she's won 49 of the 65 points at the net so far at the US Open that's an incredible and I think that number should be higher she could be coming in way more than that sometimes she drops into the Ser volley and more often than not it's successful yeah no one has Serv Voli more either than karolina Muk unsurprisingly but she's only done it 23 times but she's won 19 of those 23 points so far at this year's tournament that's a nice confident start from karolina muker the last year's semi-finalist here why do you not see more players playing like Carolina aora because they're not his talented is that the only reason I mean it's hard it's hard to come forward as much as she does when everyone's such a great baseliner and everyone moves well and and you know even the passing shots have improved so much over the last couple of years as everyone just gets stronger and More Physical um so yeah it makes things difficult and to be able to come in off your first serve you need to have a very high first percentage for a start but also have it be a weapon out and so much of what you do in a high pressure situation is how you played as a youngster how you played as a junior because you go to what you default to and how you learn and for Muk that's actually coming forward and it was the same for someone like ash bti there's not many other you know under 18 or under 14 female players that I know that are smv in yep oh wow what a pass from car Muka that was special 305 out they only out it's a good play though to come into pini's back hand she's got slightly less reach on that side as a double hander it's fair to say that she's pretty short anyway yeah Anna win yeah they actually met a few days ago Anna winter and Jasmine Pini so she's out here cheering on her cheering on one of her favorite players Jasmine said met Anna wi today I've never felt so addressed in my life that's how I feel alongside you Laura a lot of the time actually I see that as a compliment yeah no you should I'm going to take it you should one game on for [Applause] 15 yeah going back to Pini being a little short I'm sure she likes people bringing that up all the time but if you can just get her even further back behind the Baseline but not with power so much because she's so good at counter punching that you see how sharp she is with her footwork but playing above the shoulders M's got that ability on her forehand in particular to really get some height over the net yeah 5'4 here Jasmine 1 M 63 yeah she's made it and three break points will follow decided too late to come forward 14 just a slight hesitation there and it was enough time for Pini to find the space let seconds ow 15 14 [Applause] out oh it's just wide did well actually just to regroup there cuz she just stumbled after the serve thir help so Jasmine Pini strikes first in this opening set good start from the Italian and she leads by two games to one two games to one that was a play though I liked it yeah just hasn't quite executed so far well again it was a slight hesitation because she played an unbelievable forehand there got Pini way back behind the Baseline and then just second guessed herself before she went for the next shot inside the Baseline and you can't afford to have a hesitation against palini with the way that she's moving at the moment only dropped the one set this week Jasmine Pini that was actually the first set that she played against Bianca andrescu tough opening round wasn't it that one eventually Pini coming through 64 in the third and they got a little fortunate in round two Carolina pisk unfortunately having two retired just three points in into her second round match so came through that one without too much fuss and then Julia patins in the third rounds got that one done in straight sets three and four and for Muka also yet to to drop a set so Katy volet Saka and Anastasia Popova here in the last round did well to not drop the second set against Osaka down in the breaker there a break down as well she served forward it was 4y love wasn't she [Applause] oaka so good start for the number five seed Jasmine Pini has the early break here just a few uncharacteristic unforced erors coming from the racket of kolina Muka so far out remember this is only her sixth Tournament of the entire year Muka so terms of match sharpness may still not quite feel 100% as yet must be nice to play six events and then make round yeah already made a final lost to to Jang chimen in that final that she made in palmo had a great match last night with donovich repeated that gold medal match that one finished 216 in the morning yep I'm not sure Renzo ferland has done an incredible job they get on so well together at the start of this year actually at the start of this year I was ched to Renzo at the United cup and he was we had a really good off season I think she's going to play well this year I think was right yes I don't think even he probably could have quite imagined the season that she was going to have first met each other back in 2015 did Reno and Jasmine but actually only started working together officially in 2020 let after IT contract with the the Serbian tennis Federation came to an end very good player himself of course former top 20 player made the third round here in 1995 14 15 game Pini yeah another pretty straightforward hold Jasmine Pini backs up the break and the unfor count creeping up already that makes [Applause] seven well your time is uh is slightly running running out but do make sure that you do get the US Open app if you don't have it guide you through the rest of the tournament it's available on the Apple App Store in the Google Play Store as well you can find a link to the shop on the app as well have you been using that a lot I thought you might it's unlike me isn't it very so what have we bought so far bucket hats you're very into your bucket hats I love them so hats plural you've bought more than one yeah okay what gifts oh sorry not for you one for me one for you that's how it work one one for me one for other people [Applause] 4 line and there is Carolina's coach Amil misk second time that they're actually working together first became Muk coach back in 2017 and worked together for a couple of years until 2019 and then ler that year they parted ways for coming back together last year game so that's much more like it for Carolina Muk hold to love and very much stays in touch games to first he looks like he can do a really good barbecue do you know what I mean I was thinking where you were going with that and I never in my wildest dreams re thought you were going to say that incredible barbecue what gives you that idea just like confidence what are you talking about you know when you see like a dad or someone you're like oh I bet they do a really good barbecue I bet they're really proud of themselves of the barbecue yeah I mean that's a proper dad tra to have that's the energy he gives me yeah okay do you think I do a good bar around the player Lounge as well like you just you feel good around him um I'm not sure about you really you got to elaborate on that I don't see you as a c in general okay I might shock you say really yeah would you I think I could I think I could R you up something half decent time well never get tired of seeing these shots from up above Arthur Ash and Lou Armstrong course the roof very much open today it was closed this time yesterday with slight thread of rain around but blue sky above today out good news everyone Laura's second coffee of the morning's arrived so I'm not entirely sure what's to come over the next hour or so well good things I hope out that's the one she needs to cut down on we've seen three of those already missed backand return I think dropping too far back on that particular shot and of course power is going to keep going for it until M makes some changes ow thir it's looking pretty Lively out there yeah I agree the changing conditions over the last few days has been a bit of a struggle for some of the players because it was so hot then a bit cooler and these balls the regular Duty changed so much LED has depending on the conditions even Daya night I've heard from some of the players how dead it was feeling at night oh so good and that is why every everyone just adors watching karolina Muka play tennis that was delightful Pini also underrated on the slice because she dropped in a few of her own there so a chance to get that break back you great [Applause] jot Advantage M yeah I like the slice out of pini's forehand to then rush her into the backand side it's great hands from kolina and we are back on serve slightly slow start for the check three games all three games on this was always going to be a fun one skills on show for both players and the people with the grounds pass are well aware of that because the top tier of this court is yeah chocola block [Music] oh ow 15 l [Applause] out I'm not sure I I would be drop shotting Pini too much it's beautiful got 30 oh she's done brilliantly there to turn that point around Muka looked as though Pini was in control after that cross cour backand that she hit 4 15 for both players if they're coming forward today it's going to work better if they drive the first volley try not to get into the drop volleys and the touch because with the ball playing Lively it's going to jump up off the court even more than usual out 4 1 so carrina Nuka hits the front in this first set certainly looks as though she's found a rhythm out there now and leads 43 game to let [Applause] [Applause] this has been a really good response from Carolina muku Trail by an early breakout here but is now in front on serf [Applause] M made the fourth round of the Australian Open at the start of the year did Jasmine Pini and then just a month or so later W stunning return just a month or so later won the the biggest title of her career by a distance that WTA 1000 event in Dubai got a little bit of luck along the way Elena reaka unfortunately unable to take to court when they were due to meet at the quarterfinal stage but it ended up going all the way and then of course since then it has just been a ridiculous year for Pini making the final of roling garos beating Rebecca there in the quarterfinals beating miror and draver in the semis losing to Shon and then backing it up proving that that is no fluke At All by making the Wimbledon final Grand Slam record before 2024 4 and 16 yep 2024 18 and three it's CRA has there ever been a bigger turnaround in the history of tennis not one that Springs to mind oh well done of a game of cat and mouse the Muka comes out on top of 154 poy needed well to even get a racket on that ball well how quickly things have changed here Muka with two break points and P put the defensive player out there as soon as Muk came forward once or twice it brought back some energy to her game [Applause] such as the charm of Pini that I can see Anna winto actively cheering for her I don't think I've ever seen her properly like yeah yeah clap for someone well it's it's rare that she's on Armstrong right yeah but you see her obviously watching a lot of tennis but like actively you know she's almost on a fe Advantage Mor sarani out watching as well won the the gold medal at the Olympic Games together did did Jasmine and Sara oh missed it long and Muka breaks for a second time and after just over half an hour she will serve for the opening set now at 53 game to good body serve wasn't it really jammed Muk up oh had it and it's a positive Miss and we can't hear Too Much chatter from pini's team so I imagine they're kind of saying continue on stick to the same game plan some Power Point I can see the sun there just saw Muka just throwing up a few ball tosses just making sure that she was able to throw it somewhere where she could actually see it properly so good and she's using the Ser volley so well when she goes to the Pini back hand it's more of a kick so that it goes above pini's shoulder and then she's got more time to actually get forward and then mixing up able to drop a flat serve and it just takes away your margins as a returner [Applause] he [Music] [Applause] 145 so two set points [Applause] [Music] comes through in style it was a slightly slow start from Carolina Muka but she was brilliant from that out 3 l a little too much of that from Jasmine Pini t on forced errors now in this one just to go alongside a three winners down [Applause] 30 so Under Pressure immediately here Jasmine Pini was 30 love up serving now at 30 all almost over playing though there we go on the previous point they come in on a ball that really had no business being it than that on and she's got to stick to her game plan don't get caught up in what Muk is doing out had a p hold in the end from Jasmine Pini from 30 all there and she's off and running in set two first game second karolina said absolutely no expectation whatsoever coming into the US Open this year I don't think she probably even expected to reach the fourth round who knows how far she can go still yet to drop a set struggled with injuries her entire career really barely played any junior tennis whatsoever she was really really tiny when she was about 16 years of age and then all of a sudden at 16 she had a huge growth spurt so then she started getting a lot of injuries the knees her back really struggling with that she kind of lost a lot of support from people around her as well could tell that she had a lot of talent but as soon as the injury started coming she said that you know everyone just kind of left her and there was no real support in check here anymore very stop start her late teens and early stages of her career look of is doing an incredible job of going wide to pini's forehand getting her back behind the Baseline cuz Pini lets it drop slightly more on that side and then rushing the back hand I mean it's so straightforward and it's just keeping Pini sort of out of her Strike Zone but out of the game plan that she loves where she can have power coming into her backand side again and again she wants to stay in that back end crossport rally out game so M holds to love again seems being broken seem just Cruis through her service games and look of his return placement as well has almost gone exclusively to power in his forehand out well done 30 l soft hands underneath that [Applause] shot for second time that she's thrown in that body serve she's got the return that she actually wants just unable to execute then on the next forehand we saw her miss a dry volley late on in the first set yeah makes absolutely sure of that one throws their arms up in the air much to the relief of Jasmine Pini she stays ahead to lead two1 leads two games one second set M only once before Jasmine Pini here at the US Open had actually made it past the first round that was back in 2021 where she lost out to Victoria as a aner and fairness to Jasmine she's had some pretty tough draws over the year car over the years carolene Garcia in the first round in 2020 a A ranker in the second round in 2021 eish Fon in the first round in 2022 and then yena ostapenko in the first round last year so it's not been an easy time of things in New York over the years tried to qualify for three years in a row as well between 2017 and 2019 and qualies every year of course one of those years actually losing to kolina muker in 2018 in the second round of qualifying time busy day out there lot of Honey juices consumed so Muk serving at one two 12 what second serve [Applause] 15 her fastest serve of the match 11 but the average first serve speed 98.8 not as fast as she could CU you see the mix up with the kick serve as a first serve along with the flat out wide that's the biggest serve of the day 112 milph let let M cannot believe it it looked like it was way over the net you definitely heard the machine go off person she's not sure think even Pini looked like she thought it was good as well great again from kolina Muka hitting the ball beautifully now two games on second remember you can stay connected to the US Open on Facebook X Instagram Tik Tok YouTube and Whatsapp make sure that you join the conversation with us using # usop 59 [Applause] as Laura said earlier on in this match if you're going to drop shot Jasmine Pini you better make sure it's a good one because she is grease lightning out there anticipate so well just saw a glimpse of an open open racket face and went for it look didn't do enough after the first back on line that had Pini out of position she decided to go back behind not had too many service games like that today as the number five seed quick fire hold to love to stay 32 three games to two second set for set m home you saw SAR Rani in Jasmine pini's box of course they were playing doubles here as well the US Open unfortunately for them lost out to Harriet Dart and and Dian Perry of France in the second round so all eyes now on the singles incredible run that they had together in Paris at the Olympic Games such a special moment for them picking up the gold medal when Jasmine thought her season probably couldn't get any better she's an Olympic gold medalist as well [Applause] time [Applause] this has been a good response so far from has been P opening quar of an hour in this second set first set slightly spired away from her pretty quickly in the end after she went up an early break it's hard to see where power can find some in the return games since the start of the 2023 season kolina Muka is 39 and3 when she's won the opening set that's a great point though from the Italian more patience G over and over again to M's back hand until she dropped into a slice and then you capitalize so if you're looking for just a minor detail that she can do I'd probably go every return to the Muk backand the way that Muk is doing to her on the forehand side oh it's absolutely incredible defending from Jasmine Pini did such a good job just to stick in that point 16 shots of pure hard work again the drop shot just not the play but it was almost a bail out after such a physical point out 30 on oh [Applause] 43 that's a great hold from kolina Muk helped along the way by a couple of loose for hands there from Jasmine Pini three games there three first serves when she's in trouble not too much for them to say there out you went through your fair share of injuries Laura how long did it take you when you kind of came back to the match court before you felt completely match sharp back in that rhythm again a long time did it ever come back yeah not really did such a good job of turning that point around she knows that was a chance the previous shot look of took some Pace off and Parini Unleashed on it just brother try and do that more [Music] often just give Muk a different pace [Applause] [Applause] let go that's well dealt with from Jasmine Pini great approach off that forand clapping in the booth here got a rotation on the [Applause] forehand both of them have such ability to whip up on the ball oh that's brilliant aable movement there from M crush and Rush the net and for the first time in this second set kolina Muka has break points yeah sensed an opportunity and Julie took it and kolina is just two games away from another US Open [Applause] quarterfinal game to three second set on by one set it's just too good you can't even say the Pini is playing badly here yeah we baring the first well 10 15 minutes when she just looked like she was just struggling a little bit for rhythm at the back of the Court a lot of those unforced errors coming in the first three or four games she's still only on 15 but as Laura mentioned earlier kind of first three or four games she had about seven or eight so certainly the last 45 minutes it's been a very clean match for Muka [Music] oh the full hand today in some ways I can't believe the winner counts only up to seven but it's the forced errors that she's drawing as well and they change up in in Rhythm and pace and Spins she can do anything with that [Applause] shot well looks at the moment as though it might just be yet another straight sets victory for kolina Muka just as she did over Anastasia potapova Naomi oaka and Katy volet in the first round where by the way if you've not seen it I think she's probably hit shot of the tournament maybe even shot of the Year by the end of 2024 49 next up it either be Caroline Aki or beatric hadaj meire they'll be out on this cour third up after the Jack Draper Thomas mahat match is done what a service game to back up the break and the check is one game away from the quarterfinals game to three seconds one of an absolutely packed crowds out on Armstrong that are going to do their best here to get behind Jasmine Pini they don't want this match to end in the next few minutes they would love to see another set if possible oh what Happ caught in the sun yeah [Applause] Love sometimes all you can do his smile she wants to see a replay on the big screen in the stadium not sure why no so bright oh my goodness there's another one to add to the growing tally of forand winners I mean what a delight it is to see look of a play like this [Applause] [Applause] out that is a loose one 15 and after just 1 hour and 8 minutes karolina Muka has two match points well despite everything that Carolina M has been through in the last 12 months she's had nine months off the course she's had the wrist surgery she is back into a US Open quarterfinal another straight sets victory for this incredibly talented check and it is just a joy to watch sh on the tennis court an artist at work and next up it'll either be kolene vaki or beatric hadaj meire
