like uh he's got a chance to get back next week and perhaps practice and play in the season opener which certainly would be good news for the offense Terry uh one of the things I'm pretty sure is they start to get ready for Chicago we've all seen enough clips of Caleb Williams to know this guy is going to be the real deal and he's going to be really dangerous um isn't it isn't a big key when they start getting to the game planning that those defensive ends can't let him turn the corner I think so I think you know for all the talk about Caleb Williams him being the second coming of Patrick Mahomes or what have you you know you got to remember too George this is still a rookie quarterback making his first ever NFL start and don't think that fact's not lost on dinard Wilson I'm betting he's gonna send the house after Caleb Williams and he's gonna be okay big boy let's see what all the hype's about let's see if you can make a decision within a second and a half because I'm sending six people after you normally I am totally with you but there's something different about this kid yeah I mean he's a talent there's there's no doubt about that so it's going to be interesting to see how much trickery and disguises that they put in versus how much they put in just of you know the things that dinard Wilson likes to do which is you know Blitz from every angle he can find and you know try to you know catch him you know and force him to make a quick decision do something with the ball that doesn't want to do so it's going to be interesting to see and it's going to be a challenge for this Titan secondary the Bears wide receiver core has really improved you know they got Roma dun in the draft they picked up Keenan Allen from the Chargers so you know they and they already had uh I can't the guy's name slips my mind uh that was a pretty good player too so they've got three good receivers it's going to be a challenge for this Titans secondary for sure so go back on the roster um you speculated yesterday that Nick Vanette would end up on the active roster and that's exactly what happened yeah Rand carth thought pretty much said as much yesterday he said that uh what they were doing was it was a procedural thing what it was the Elijah molden trade to get him off the roster did not go through before the the uh 3 o'l de Central Time deadline so they had to it the easiest thing to do was terminate the contract of a vested veteran like Vanette and then resign him back the next day once molden was off the roster today and I'm guessing they told him that yes absolutely absolutely that's you know it's just kind of a procedural thing to uh get them through the day so that they're in compliance with the the league limit of the roster God knows we want to be compliant absolutely George no betting no fun now the league can take all the money they want but God help anybody that bets on a game yes they know anything about that would you George they are is with Vandy football coach Clark Lee coach early kickoff Saturday obviously it's been really hot here in what ways are you guys working to try to deal with the heat obviously it's been hot up where Virginia Tech is as well so uh what are you guys anticipating in terms of you know ancillary things that to to prepare for the heat well we we you know we've scrimmaged in it which has been important I think particularly in our Stadium there's certain you know aspects to that facility that kind of Trapped the heat in different ways um so we we've scrimmaged at 11:00 um so we kind of know the feel it was during during that little Heat Wave we had in week two um we were out in it on Sunday afternoon and kind of the peak heat of the day and then we were out in it on Tuesday for the length of practice you know we've felt that kind of Suffocation um and we've done it multiple times we've we've gone to Indo here the last couple days because it's now about uh getting our legs back and I want them feeling really good heading the game day um as far as you know in game you know you're going to be paying attention obviously the next 48 hours is critical so how we hydrate how we rest how we prepare our bodies to to go through a difficult four four quarters but in game you're going to look at rotations um and you're just going to try to push and pull based off what you feel how the uh team's physically responding but you know maybe getting a guy rotation early that you you know you might have waited a little longer in normal circumstances gives you a chance maybe to have live legs from a starter in the fourth quarter coach what does Diego Pavia bring to this team obviously playing in the Conference USA competition ramps up in the SEC and obviously a tough challenge with a Virginia Tech defense uh but what are some expectations for him and and and what do you like most about him in terms of what he brings yeah there's not there's no stage that's too big for him like you know he's obviously one on the road in this conference um and so um I think the bigger the challenge I think the more he gets excited um to meet it and um you know he he he brings a confidence and an edge to him that um you you needed the quarterback position so I I think there's been a nice kind of influx of leadership in that room um and certainly he's been a part of that but um you know the guys respond to him obviously he's been named captain um and I expect them to Rally around him on Saturday and and that means you know if if we're challenged early you know his voice is going to be important um and if we're finding success early I mean it's going to be his focus and his steadiness that allow us to sustain Effort Virginia Tech returns a lot of players especially on offense uh Kyon drones in that running attack uh what stands out to you in film about them and and what are you guys honing in on this week ahead of game day well they're very skilled um they have an offensive line that's played a ton of snaps together um and that that's a starting point they play really well together they pass pressures off um they protect well um and so it starts with them obviously with drones he he's a he's an explosive playmaker he can get the ball down the field they have really good skill on the perimeter um but he himself is a physical Runner and adds an element of you're there times where you're going to have to defend all 11 players you know and that always is going to stress your systems out you know we can't always get a player an extra player where we need him like that you know you as a coach there are times where you have to design success and then I think there's also a chance that or times where your style of play has to uh be the impetus for Success so we talk about it's 50% what you play 50% how you play it when you defend a rushing attack like this um you've got to play with great pad level you got to play Square you've got to be assertive and um you know the way they play on the perimeter um you know we're going to need to be confident assertive and take that space early otherwise it's going to be a long day and we're going to be chasing the ball around last thing coach keys to Victory what are the things you guys have to do in order to pull out a win on Saturday against the hokes well we got to we got to down our mistakes on defense I mean Point limitations is a big part I think both teams are going to try to establish a run game and so um you know the ability to uh to not allow explosive touchdowns will be important um to force methodical drives I think that's a a critical part of our success um you know there it's going to be about establishing the Run game and defending the Run game right so I think there are a lot of scenarios where you look up and say the team that has the best rushing attack on Saturday can win the game or be in the best position to win the game and so how we build the Run wall on defense how we establish the Run game on offense will be really important um and then finally it's a game where turnovers will be critical and so how we attack the ball defensively suffocate the space contest the space and and maximize the opportunities we have uh to get the ball back for offense offensively how we make good decisions with the ball and and um and protect it and that means sometimes punting is is is a win you know and we have to take that mindset and um those three things will be the things we're focused on um it should be a great game excited for the challenge 11:00 a.m. kickoff Vanderbilt Virginia Tech on Saturday Coach thanks for taking the time thanks so much okay that interview with Clark Lee presented by the folks at pan coast and Associates so Billy a year ago when the whole thing collapsed by the time they got to November I don't believe there was any confidence level at all on that football team about winning and in particular when you start playing High Caliber SEC people okay Virginia Tech is in that same deal I think if they're going to have any chance to win that early they have to show something that feels and looks better than it did a year ago mhm and I just think that's critical it may not be all that important for Virginia Tech they had all the momentum at the end of the year with the bowl but on vandy's end I think they've got to make some good things happen early just to change the Mojo of who they are and what they are just get the taste out of last year of last year out of your mouth as as a v fan because too many times walking out of the stadium last year or walking away from your TV after two quarters and you're out of the game you know some games after one quarter you know they were just dominated they were uncompetitive in in too many games and so if there're as long as they're able to to compete you know take win win or loss out of it if they're able to compete and stand up their their end of the bargain and stay strong you know I think fans could be proud of that you just they never did that last year against a team that was quote unquote better than them so you know Clark mentioned there they're going to have to scheme people open at times right Pavia there's a lot of pressure on him but he's made plays before he went down to Auburn and beat Auburn and he's you know he's he's he's produced he has a track record and vandol has a hasn't had a quarterback uh like that in in quite a while that you you feel like you can trust now he's got to go out there and do it that there's still that element of surprise with him what are you going get but you've seen it before you know and so Clark I think Clark that's that's what he can feel confident in going in you've got a quarterback in a staff offensively that seems to know what they're doing I got a chance and Billy did as well two weeks ago to see them in a scrimmage and to say that I was unimpressed with their wide receiver core would be an understatement they couldn't catch squat that day drop after drop after drop so I'm assuming that the tight ends in this offense are going to have to be a lot bigger because I don't see the wide receiver help yeah Cole Spence is a big 6 foot s Target who kid out of Georgia was hurt all year last year he's going to be a big weapon for them Eli Stowers who transferred over from New Mexico state is another guy they they really like and he even played a little bit of Wildcat quarterback last year as well he started as a quarterback at at Texas A&M transferred to Mexico State and him and pavy are kind of that do they had last year if you watch some of that New Mexico State tape a lot of Pavia to starers action so I I think you'll be you'll see some of that and they've got a third tight end they've got some good tight ends but I don't know like as a defense where you can probably take a look at the tight ends and if if you could if you want to lock them up and and cage them you can so you're going to have to have receivers step up I'm sure Virginia Tech knows V wants to go to their tight ends who are those receivers I don't know you mentioned in the scrimmage you'd like to see Quincy Skinner Junior step into a bigger role Junior Cheryl is a younger guy that had showed some flashes last year after those two guys I don't know and even those two guys aren't totally proven quite yet so that's a question mark and and it's it's got to be answered in in the Virginia Tech game I I think to to to feel good about what what they can give you so they paid a lot of money for this kid Nate Johnson from Utah and in the scrimmage I was shocked at his his lack of ability to throw the football uh it it seems a little late in the game for that to rear its ugly head but it sure looked like it did and yet he's too good an athlete to not do some things with what do you think they do do with him packages in in the Red Zone I know you watched the Mexico State last year if you go back and look at that Auburn game there were some drives where Pavia would drive them down they'd get into the Red Zone and then they would they would hand it off to Eli Stowers to be the quarterback and it would lead him in Into The End Zone in the red zone as a wildcat quarterback that ran most of the time when he's in but you can scheme for that you know as an offense if Nate Johnson's in the game yeah the defense knows he's running but you also got to tackle him I mean he he's he's he's got ridiculous speed and so he's a weapon they have to use George and it's going to be interesting how they use him um and like if Pavia goes down is he the first guy you know that that goes in it'll be interesting they they've got a Drew Dicky kid that looked good pretty good in that that second scrimmage I know you were at and and has looked like the best quarterback at times so they've got an interesting room Pavia is is the leader in the room but it' be interesting if when he goes down um who who's who's behind him is is a question they're going to have to answer but yeah Nate Johnson he's gonna he's gonna have to do some things this year because and even at Utah he did he did some things in in week one against Florida had a touchdown and I think let drive there so um I think you'll definitely see some Nate Johnson so defensively a year ago they just weren't very good and everybody is believing okay a year older they're going to be better or they going to be better enough or just marginally better that's the question you know that's the age-old question right now they've got some good players langon Patterson CJ Taylor you know but some good players is isn't going to cut it to to make a difference on your season win lost column you know those are their two best players those are their two best players number two Rand Randon fet is a young guy that was all over the field in in a couple of the scrimmages and throughout Camp uh still a young kid but he's got he's got some talent and he plays that that star position where you're not a linebacker you're not a safety you're in between so he'll be coming in on a lot of blitzes uh cornerback I do I I still see them struggling I just don't you know and maybe there's some guys that have improved and maybe Clark Lee becoming the DC helps improve that but at the end of the day you got to have the jimmies and Joe's to hold up and you know we'll see and I just front seven George I don't I don't see their front four specifically getting enough pressure and that's something that I think they've never gotten any pressure no that's that's something that that fans have been disappointed in that under Clark Lee and and even you know a lot of the Mason era they just haven't had enough pass rushers and you don't you're not asking for four you know I think fans want give give me a a pass rush press to that can affect the game you know and vbal just hasn't had that so is their defense better yes like you said is it better enough we'll see in Virginia Tech is it better enough to make any difference I it couldn't be any worse I think they've got to create takeaways you remember Bobby Johnson's team I think it was in 2008 where you know they weren't the be most talented team and you know but they started the season 5-0 they plus minus was hug ridiculous yeah so that's the type of Team Vanderbilt has to have they've got to create takeaway and they've got to score off those takeaways as well I think they can do that you just got to when you get that chance you got to catch the ball or you got to recover the fumble here is an absurd thought but I'm going to throw it out there anyway um obviously they were done no favors with an 11:00 kickoff in sweltering heat where their depth is is always a problem you never know but that I was looking a few minutes ago first chance we've had for rain since the Republican National Convention a rain delay for them might not be the worst thing in the world no uh to to overcome the depth of having to play 60 straight minutes a rain delay at the half I'm just saying it might be yeah let Vandy let VY get some rest I don't I don't hate that yeah well we'll see just a thought that's interesting because it's going to rain I mean I think we know it's deep enough we're deep you know that for sure oh it's going to rain uhhuh something weird happens because I haven't seen that in a Auburn in 1989 before that it was always at Legion Field that big USC game in the 70s where Bear Bryant you know showed everybody the Wishbone y that was at Legion Field most of the Tennessee games were at Legion Field that's correct they were they were and now Legion Field's Upper Deck condemned condemned it doesn't look good today so what do you think it's going to be like for kalayn deor I think it's going to be I think it's going to be different I think we're going to see a different style offense for sure um I think the SEC offense is in general different uh moving forward um you know I certainly think teams like George is going to have a little bit of an old school defense still I think B still have some of the old school as so with the big orange as well so um I'm really excited about Texas Oklahoma getting in the SEC I think it's going to just take that level of play up even more and and create more rivalries as we go forward and uh you know I'm excited I'm glad it's here oh we're all glad it's here absolutely I think the SEC fan is in for an adjustment the the days of 11 And1 or 12-0 I believe are over I think so too I think so too it's going to be it's going to be much more competitive and and it's going to more diverse and and like I said with Texas Oklahoma coming in it's going to really create more as it goes forward so it's going to be uh it's going to be interesting to see how the rivalries hold on with each other as we go forward to as well so I'm glad Tennessee and Alabama still got their rivalry and Alabama Auburn still got you know we have the Iron Bowl you can't take those can't take those away so but uh so let's go back to kayin dbor for a minute Jaylen milroe in the second half of last season was a way better quarterback it it's hard to imagine any quarterback from one week to the next making Le made you think he's comfortable in this you know I think he's probably more comfortable in Costa B's program he was in Savin program you know um he's a great kid man great young man and and uh he really represents the school good and and I think he's got his head on and he's a great student studies it and he's just unbelievable athletic so I I think he's going to be some good things to come out of him this year and I think he's got a great career ahead of him in the NFL as well what level of give the guy a chance will Alabama fans take because there's the chance of a losser too early do they freak or do they say look let's calm down relax all is well as you know Alabama fans don't don't relax very well at all they that ale comes up and it's a different ball game but you know I I I think I think is going to be just fine and I think he's going to surprise a lot of folks a lot of fans and uh I think he's got a good season ahead of him and uh you know it takes more than just one you know they we've got to get all those personalities to to play with each other and um you know it's uh it's going to definitely be a good year for the tide I believe I feel I feel good about it you know the ironic thing about a coaching change is I would contend Nick sabbin has never done a better coaching job when you go back to the loss against Texas and then an awful performance in a win at South Florida and to watch them at the end of the year holy cow did they improve oh man they did they did they um you know we attended uh my father-in-law and I attended the ironbow this last year and saw that that last play and that the the atmosphere though that comes with some of these ball games is just you just had I tell people you just got to go experience it it's just it's just something it's neat it's really neat to experience the game day the um the things they do prior to the pregame and it's just a it's I love all sports but college football and SEC football is something different for sure is that the first time you had been iron bowl at all Au it's not the first time but I will have to hate to admit this it's the first time I've seen Alabama [Laughter] win oh I've seen him get beat for the I've seen him yeah for the record I won tell you what the record is but this the first first in the win column well Auburn gets Juiced up for that they do and they did a year ago in a game where on paper they really shouldn't have had any reason to be there and yet they were the better team for 80% of that game ABS absolutely and uh you know I I think dor and freeze both I think they're going to create an unbelievable rivalry I mean he free is going to do good at Auburn I mean he's going to get his they're only a game and a half ahead of Atlanta so if the playoffs started today the Braves are not in the playoffs no they are in the playoffs they would be in the six hole at the moment they would play Milwaukee in Milwaukee a best two out of three however and I I've been watching this a little bit in the last week as they've started playing a lot better could they get get themselves into the Four Hole where they could host a Playoff round and force you to do the show without me because you would be in Atlanta dad gum right I would I'll do the show without you yeah sure you would I'll do until 8:00 Nashville time on Fox our delay could be more probably game two that we're taking is Jacksonville State with Rich Rod at home minus three against a Coastal Carolina that is nowhere near as good as they were when remember when they got to November during the covid year and they were still in it and then BYU beat them that Coastal Carolina doesn't exist anymore no it doesn't no but that's
