morning all all right so in my continuing look at the NHL season or NHL's history one season at a time we were up to the 2006 2007 season the second under the salary cap era so Buffalo wins the East absolutely fantastic record 5322 and 7 record 113 points 308 goals scored 242 goals against their leading scorers Danny Brier 81 games 32 goals 63 assists 95 points uh right behind them the New Jersey Devils 4924 and9 record 107 points 216 goals for 201 goals against Elish is their leading scorer 75 games 21 goals 48 assists for 69 points the Atlanta Thrashers it is the one year that Atlanta makes the playoffs they win their division they end up with 97 points record of 4328 and 11 246 goals scored 245 goals against and Maran HOSA is a big part of the reason why uh 8 2 games 43 goals 57 assists 100 points so HOSA a big part of what's making Atlanta Work It it doesn't last very long but it is a successful season for the Thrashers nonetheless uh Ottawa finishes with 105 points 4825 and9 record 288 goals scored 222 goals against yes Danny Heatley 82 games 50 goals 55 assists 105 points 50 goals in ' 07 for Danny Heatley the Pittsburgh Penguins 4724 and 11 105 points as well 277 goals scored 246 goals against Sydney Crosby of course the leading scorer uh 79 games 36 goals 84 assists 120 points the New York Rangers finished 423 and 10 94 points 242 goals scored 216 goals against yir yogger the leading scorer for the Rangers 82 games 30 goals 66 assists 96 points uh he's only been in the NHL for almost 20 years and still nearly 100 points in a season the Tampa Bay Lightning finished 44 33 and 5 so 93 points for them 253 goals scored 261 goals against V La Cavalier leads them in scoring 82 games 52 goals which was number one in the NHL that year 56 assists 108 points the New York Islanders finished 40 30 and 12 92 points they qualified on the very last night of the schedule as Toronto fans 248 goals scored 240 goals against and Jason Blake who I believe is a former Maple Leaf uh 82 games 40 goals 29 assists 69 points to lead the Islanders and scoring the Toronto mapley narrowly missed the playoffs 40 31 and 11 record 91 points 258 goals scored 269 goals against Matt sundine still their leading scorer 75 games 27 goals 49 assists 76 points the Montreal Canadians also outside the playoffs 4234 and six record for 90 points to 245 goals scored 256 goals against Saku kibu their leader leading scorer 81 games 22 goals 53 assists 75 points the Carolina Hurricanes finished 40 34 and 8 88 points for them 241 goals scored 253 goals against Ray Whitney is their leading scorer 81 games 32 goals 51 assists 83 points he doesn't know how to age either uh the Florida Panthers 3531 and 16 record for 86 points 24 7 goals scored 257 goals against oie oan had quite the year that season 82 games 39 goals 52 assists for 91 points the Boston Bruins 35 41 and6 records 76 points 219 goals scored 289 goals against mark sard their leading scorer uh 82 games 22 goals 74 assists for 96 points the Washington Capitals 28 40 and 14 70 points 235 goals scored 286 goals against so the Penguins they they pull themselves out of the mess they'd been in for a while the capitals have not done so as of yet but they're led by oetkin and scoring a disappointing season by his standards 82 games 46 goals 46 assists 92 points uh oetkin of course will have uh totals that dwarf that in following Seasons uh the Philadelphia Flyers bought him out that season they finished with 56 points record of 2248 and 12 214 goals scored 303 goals against Simone G is their leading scorer 76 games 41 goals 27 assists 68 points out west it's still Detroit at the top they've finished 9 and 13 so 113 points for them 254 goals scored 199 goals against paval datsuk is their leading scorer 79 games 27 goals 60 assists for 87 points the Anaheim Ducks second in the west with 110 points record of 4820 and 14 258 goals scored 208 goals against m salani is the leading scorer for the ducks that year 82 games 48 goals 46 assists 94 points so very close to another 50 goal season for salani the Vancouver Canucks 4926 and 7 record 105 points 222 goals scored 21 goals against they are dragged to the playoffs That season by Roberto loango but sadine as the sadine twins who were slow in their development uh sadine finally goes above Point per game and that's Daniel leading him in scoring 81 games 36 goals 48 assists for 84 points the Nashville Predators are next at 5123 and 8 110 points 272 goals scored 212 goals against Paul Korea the leading scorer in Nashville 82 games 24 goals 52 assists for 76 points the San Jose Sharks finished 5126 and five so 107 points for them 258 goals scored 199 goals against Joe Thorton is the leading scorer again 82 games 22 goals 92 assists 114 points for Thorton the Dallas Stars finished 50 25 and 7 107 points 226 goals scored 197 goals against Mike rerel the leading scorer 81 games 18 goals 41 assists 59 points what makes it interesting is the Dallas and Vancouver meet in the first round and both teams are ones that are struggling to score with great goal tending so we get to the playoffs that's kind of the story line there Minnesota finishes four 48 26 and 8 104 points 235 goals scored 191 goals against Brian Ralston 78 games 31 goals 33 assists 64 points uh to lead them in scoring the Calgary Flames finished 4329 and 10 96 points so they make the playoffs 258 goals scored 226 goals against Jerome ainla leads them in scoring 70 games 39 goals 55 assists for 94 points just below the playoff line reside the Colorado Avalanche record of 4431 and7 95 points 272 goals scored 251 goals against Joe sack another one of those players not showing any signs of aging 82 games 36 goals 64 assists 100 points for sack the St Louis Blues finished 3435 and 13 for 81 points 214 goals scored 254 goals against Doug weight their leading scorer 82 games 16 goals 43 assists for 59 points the Columbus Blue Jackets finished 33 44 or 42 I should say and seven 73 points 2011 goals scored 249 goals against David vorne is their leading scorer uh 82 games 16 goals 48 assists 64 points for vorne uh the Oilers 3243 and S records 71 points 194 goal 195 goals scored I should say 248 goals against and Peter sakur is their leading scorer 82 games 22 goal goal 31 assists 53 points the Chicago Blackhawks 3142 and9 records 71 points 2011 goals scored 258 goals against Martin havlat uh their leading scorer 56 games played 25 goals 32 assists 57 points for havlat the LA Kings 27 41 and 14 records 68 points 227 goals scored 283 goals against Mike cameri leads them in scoring that year 81 games 34 goals 46 assists for 80 points and the Phoenix Coyotes last in the west record of 3146 and5 67 points 216 goals scored 284 goals against Shane D their leading scorer 73 games 27 goals 28 assists for 55 points so there's all 30 teams all 30 leading scorers uh the cap increases that year by 5 million it goes from 39 million and the first year the salary cap to $44 million per team so that's $150 million extra and salary cap space for everybody um fewer penalties lead to fewer goals you may have noticed that the scoring totals have come down it's because there weren't as many power plays fewer power plays result in fewer goals uh June 23rd of 2006 a pretty big day for kanuck fans Florida trades Roberto loango and Lucas kek a 2006 do well to the knucks in exchange for Allen Al and berzi so Todd berzi after the Steve Moore incident it just it wasn't going to work in Vancouver it was too much of a distraction it was all the time in the press and so berui being moved to Florida made sense for him and for the team to move on as well uh June 24th of 2006 the Leafs trade the rights to tarasque to the Boston Bruins in exchange for goldendream not too long before that but there was great debate at the time about whether or not this was a a good move for the Toronto Maple Leaves which in hindsight no probably not uh July third of 2006 the Oilers trade Chris Pronger to the Ducks for Joffrey lupal ladislav schme a 2007 first a 2008 first which is used to draft Jordan Everly and a second round draft pick that year as well which became Travis hammeck so you'll notice I'm wearing Ducks gear because once Pronger goes to Anaheim anaheim's chances of winning the cup go way through the roof the Oilers go from a Stanley Cup finalist to not being a playoff team and just that that appearance of a team a a player basically saying I don't really want to be here whether it was the player or it was his wife whoever it was the Optics make it look like players don't want to go to Edmonton and this would be a storyline for some time after that and it really to me anyways it starts with the Pronger trade is where we start to see that narrative starting up again a narrative that we saw uh in the late 80s early 90s but then it was more about the fact that they weren't willing to pay the money to keep that dynasty together that was necessary to do so February 27th of 20 07 the Florida Panthers trade Todd bruzi to the wings for Shawn Maas in a 2007 second so when when berzi arrives in Florida it doesn't work out all that well he ends up being traded to Detroit for less than what Florida was willing to give up to get berzi uh but Todd berzi would never be that power forward again he had some good Seasons but he was never that power forward uh the the the Steve Moore incident I think it's one of those things that it was the dividing line between the the Canucks success of the West Coast Express and then everything falling apart after and B's career tied to that the whole conu team really tied to that until the long Longo trade seemed to refresh everything and change everything up not a coincidence that brzi is going out the door at the same time of course so February 27th of 2007 the Oilers trade Ryan Smith to the Islanders uh for Nelson omara and a 2007 first so first off you're trading Captain Canada beloved figure uh secondly the man cried on the the day of the trade uh clearly upset and moved at the idea that he wasn't going to be an Oiler anymore which again at a time where the Oilers are having a hard time attracting players it just seemed like an odd move to make even if Smith was going there at the end of his contract but he goes to the Islanders Smith looked okay with the Islanders he would end up back with the Oilers but it was just it was another one of those moves that uh at the time there was some risk to it but we understood why the why the Oilers would move them it just ah the Optics of everything and all uh also this is a year where something it's just weird the only number that hadn't been worn in the National Hockey League was the number 84 Gom lonr of the Montreal Canadians is the first NHL player to wear the number number 84 on the ice so it's interesting it's an interesting one isn't it all right so getting over to the trophy winners the Art Ross trophies won by Sydney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins That season the masteran goes to Phil Kastle of the Boston Bruins coming out of Cancer Treatments uh The Calder Trophy goes to have gny malcin of the Pittsburgh Penguins so now we're really into it where we've got Malin and Crosby of course uh the conm goes to Scott Neer of the Anaheim Ducks big part of the reason why Scott Neer was as high on my list of the best defenseman I've seen play is after he got to Anaheim he got better so yeah Neer Meer absolutely ridiculously good defenseman uh the Cy Trophy goes to Rod bremore the Carolina Hurricanes the heart Trophy goes to cydney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins the Jack Adams goes to El elino of the Vancouver Canucks the Norris Trophy goes to Nick Lidstrom of the Detroit Red Wings the King Clancy goes to Saku Kovu of the Montreal Canadians uh the Lester Pearson goes to Sydney Crosby of the penguin so he gets both the MVP from the writers and he gets Nam Nam as the best the the the best player in the game by the players as well uh the rocket Rashard goes to Vinnie La cavaler of the Tampa Bay Lightning the VZ goes to Martin bder of New Jersey and it was a back and forth between bder and Lang Longo all year um kanuck fans myself included felt that Lang Longo played behind a much worse defense in Vancouver and and so there was there was a hope that that maybe we would see uh Luongo get the vzna but in the end it doesn't happen the Jennings Trophy goes to Nick Backstrom and Manny Fernandez of the Minnesota Wild who only allowed 191 goals that season the uh scoring leaders I feel like I've already got all the scoring guys on the board so we'll go with just the goenda does lead and wins record of 4823 and 7 922 safe percentage 12 shut outs Leong goes next up at 4722 and 6 921 safe percentage five shutouts uh Mark Andre flurry and Pittsburgh 40 16 and9 record 906 safe percentage five shutouts mik kov and Calgary 40 24 and9 record 9917 safe percentage seven shutouts uh Ryan Miller in Buffalo 40 16 and six record 911 safe percentage two shut outs Dominic hasik and Detroit 3811 and six record 913 safe percentage eight shutouts and Marty turo in Dallas 38 20 and five record 910 safe percentage six shut outs now League All Stars we'll discuss here uh down the the middle Sydney Crosby of Pittsburgh's first team uh Vinnie La cavaler of Tampa Bay second team Allstar on the left side Alex oetkin of the Caps as first team second team is Thomas vanck of the Buffalo Sabers on the right side Danny Heatley of ottawa's first team Allstar Marty San Lou of Tampa Bay second team Allstar on the blue line Nick ledstrom of Detroit and Scott Neer of Anaheim are your first team Allstars second team Allstars uh Dan Bole of Tampa Bay and Chris Pronger in Anaheim so Pronger and Neer Meer on the blue line just felt unfair to everybody else uh and in that Marty B of New Jersey's first team Roberto loango and Vancouver is your second team Allstar so we get to the playoffs in the playoffs San Jose knocks off Nashville uh four games to one uh and Nashville had brought in Phil uh yeah Peter forsberg uh the the Hall of Famer Peter forsberg in order to try to you know get over the hump in the playoffs and San Jose pushes them aside in the first round Vancouver beats Dallas four games to three in that first round pretty epic first round pretty good solid first round for Marty turko but because Dallas loses in the first round that's the narrative the turko can't win in the playoffs uh Anaheim beats Minnesota four games to one Detroit beats Calgary four games to two out east Ottawa beats Pittsburgh four games to one the Rangers sweep Atlanta so Atlanta wins the Division but in the playoffs the Rangers take him apart uh the New Jersey Devils beat Tampa Bay four games to two and buffalo beats the Islanders four games 21 in the conference semi-finals Anaheim beats Vancouver in five games and of course famously uh Luongo had to had to exit the game briefly uh in game five and I mean he was a warrior he did everything he could but in the end Vancouver just didn't have any answer against Anaheim uh Detroit beats San Jose four games to two Ottawa beats New Jersey four games to one and buffalo knocks off the Rangers four games to two out east now in the conference final uh we have Anaheim on one side Detroit on the other Detroit wins at home 2 to one Anaheim then goes into Detroit and wins four to3 in overtime uh Detroit goes into Anaheim and wins 5 nothing so they're up two games to one there Anaheim Roars back with a 5 to3 win in game four to tie the series Anaheim then wins in Detroit 2 to1 in overtime followed by a win at home 4 to3 to win the series four games to two uh in the East Ottawa wins in Buffalo both games uh 5-2 and four to3 that second game in double overtime and then Ottawa wins at home one- nothing they're up three games to nothing Buffalo avoids The Sweep with a three to2 win in Ottawa but then Ottawa goes into Buffalo and wins three to2 in overtime to win and go all the way to the Stanley Cup Final where they would meet Anaheim and Anaheim wasn't being denied that year uh the Ducks 3-2 and one- nothing victories Ottawa wins 5 to3 Anaheim wins 3-2 and then Anaheim wins that final game by a score of 6-2 so Anaheim wins the series 4 games to one over the ottaa uh Senators again that six to2 win in game five just took all the doubt out of it um Andy mcdonal the leading scorer for the Ducks five goals two assists for him uh Cory Perry two goals four assists and Ryan gats two goals two assists for the Ducks uh Jager 891 safe percentage for him really solid playoffs he didn't have to be as good during these playoffs as he did saying 03 when they lost in that final uh Daniel alfredson four goals and an assist in the final for Ottawa Mike fiser two goals two assists Wade Ren had a goal and an assist as well Ray Amory 871 save percentage for Ottawa in the Stanley Cup Final so that's as close as Ottawa has been and uh things would start to kind of turn against Ottawa a little bit not too long after and for the Ducks they do not repeat they have not won a Stanley Cup again since and uh it is interesting to me that they did win the cup the year that they dropped the mighty duck's name that they went to this jersey which I remember looking at at the time and going so no logo then cuz to me kind of look like a practice jersey but then they won the cup with it I was like all right well you keep that for a while then don't you but anyways there you go let me know your
