Temple Post Game: Sooners Dominate Season Opener

3 2 1 go there's not one guy one person in the history of this program that's bigger than the [Music] program what's better than this guys being dudes what's up and welcome into this postgame pod edition of the program guys podcast first one of 2024 my name is Mesa Prince join joined with you by Mar call Ryan Tyson today is Sun Saturday Saturday September or August 31st we're a little early this morning little early it's early for the guys it's early for the boys uh Oklahoma coming off a win against Temple last night in Norman they get the win 51 to3 they cover boys they cover they cover one and0 against the spread this year um 51-3 in my opinion the ugliest 51-3 that you're ever gonna see uh I'd love to hear what you guys have to have to say about it um are we just doing like overall overall thoughts just jump in just dive in real quick yeah just dive um the defense is legit like yeah just like which we all like expected you know and I think they really showed up in a really great way I mean six turnovers amazing incredible most we've ever had had since what 2011 I think is what I saw um which we've been talking about that this was going to be our best defense in a decade so um all of that wonderful I'm really excited to talk a bit more about the defense offense needs some work um pretty especially with the offensive line and I think some of the offensive play calling um it was pretty vanilla pretty boring and didn't really feel I don't know I was watching watching it and I was like the offensive line especially I was like the second we get to a Tennessee we're going to get mowed over so we we need to get from here to Tennessee we need to get a lot better pretty quickly so um you know I'm we beat the spread 513 excited about it um I'm excited of the football's back I think there was some moments of really great offense but overall loved what I saw on the defensive side offense needs some work good teams win great teams cover Mark yeah 51 to3 pretty freaking close to 52 to nothing I gotta say one of us was perilously close on that one so close I'm I'm pleased with vanilla generally when when we're this early in the season you don't want to get anything on tape that's like Oh shoot that's their go-to play to Deion Burks Oh shoot that's their go-to play when when they want to get Bowers sharp the ball some you know you don't want to get all of that on tape that said defense looked excellent defense looked like our defense should look against Temple that's that's 100% all it is they they answered the call yesterday special teams looked fantastic I thought in a lot of areas punting not so much let's let's get those punts going a little higher and a little further field goal though Mark yeahi goals we have a kicker we do crazy for the first time since Gabe Burk we have a kicker yeah mhm very good to know uh we'll get into all of it a little bit further but how can you be upset with 51 to3 we're gonna try we're GNA tryig figure nastiest 513 I've ever seen listen Danny stman that son of a [ __ ] I'm kidding uh so um we let's just go ahead and we'll start with the offense guys okay the the offense was kind of the unfortunately the story for what Mark said was a Fant and Ryan said a fantastic day for the defense and they deserve their fly and we'll give it to him but the offense seemed to struggle uh at times so here's Jackson arold 17 for 25 141 yards four touchdowns he ran the ball 11 times for 34 yards um the third down conversions Ryan what was that number you had in front of you didn't you a whopping one of 12 yeah that's that it was it was the LA the one that we got was at the very end of the game so for the majority of the game we were looking at a goose egg and it f it too watching the team play it it felt like we were getting into ruts and then every time we didn't get a third down questioning to myself oh I guess we're just playing for fourth down here I me we were three of three fourth down so like we we made it happen when we went for fourth down but that is going back to kind of the vanilla offense right it was it just wasn't it just didn't seem explosive it didn't seem like we were trying to get a first down on third down we were just kind of like content with just like letting our defense handle it and I think that works against Temple and then I don't think that works against other teams so I I'm hoping that they're just not showing us something they're just not like revealing anything um and and this was by Design which I think we heard from um uh Brent afterward saying that the vanilla offense was more by Design um so I I just don't know I like I didn't like it I didn't love to see it and the third down was that reminded me of was it was it last year was it the last year's bow game against Arizona that we went like Z and 10 for third Downs or something like that and against good teams you lose when that happens so I I'm just I'm I'm a little concerned about that I think the third Downs are where we really felt the absence of Nick Anderson and Jaden Gibson and Jalil faroo who goes out yesterday with an injury that'll keep him out six to eight weeks how much has he practiced with andrel Anthony you know who came up big on a couple of moments yesterday but that can't have been the plan all of long for uh Dion Burks Angel Anthony and JJ Hester to be the guys that you're throwing the ball to as often as we did yesterday and while it while it manifested itself in a lot of ways I think the third Downs are maybe the biggest because you can see he didn't have com he didn't have options he was comfortable with he did seem comfortable with sharp so like I'm I'm a little surprised that they didn't leverage him more in the third down game but that first touchdown that touchdown was sexy yeah the first touchdown was was great I think it was not only a good route by Bowers sharp to find the hole in the Zone on a roll out like that like that's his job is to kind of get behind that linebacker and be in front of the safety and put them in a place where they can't win and then Jackson layering that throw having the the quarterback Acumen to know this doesn't require me to throw 110 miles an hour this requires me to just kind of lob it in there in between the guys and let it happen I thought Jackson made a couple of really big time throws last night I think credit where due 141 yards isn't going to stick out to you but couple of those throws man you're just like ball on their side of the field every time I know and he's just like you're the arm Talent is there arm talent's there I think the reads are there I'm I'm impressed with him the dudes gotta Slide the dude's gota Slide the dude's gota slide like what are we doing what about the Jack offense a little bit yeah he went on one of those third downs we didn't get dude lowered his shoulder to get the first down didn't even get it had to go for it on fourth down so just slide okay just slide it's crazy um seven different ball carriers though guys that's the other thing I just wanted to mention and to DeMarco Murray's credit the E the evenness of the carries is is what sticks out to me basically DeMarco Murray saying everybody's gonna get your shot let's see what you do with it and to Ryan's Point Taylor Tatum's the one who who stuck out the most five carries for Tatum 69 yards nice Sam Franklin four for 45 gavonte Barnes five for 33 Gavin Sawchuk six for 15 so th that stable of running backs all got the fair share of opportunities and Taylor Tatum was the one with the with the backups in made made the biggest noise and I think that that's pretty telling I feel like Sam Franklin's burst really showed itself towards the end of the game also I was wondering what this backfield rotation would look like and DeMarco or actually yesterday it was Nick basquin the assist he stepped in for Demarco as running back coach said here's everyone you get a little bit of everybody I think javante looked rejuvenated the way that everyone has told us he would he was running strong yesterday in ways that he did not run at all last season I've been on the Gavin train but he was kind of the only back that didn't get anything going I felt like there there wasn't much to be impressed with at all there yeah man Taylor Tatum looks so good though that one drive um he he looked really really impressive so um yeah I I think that's kind of what we expected with the running back room I expected a lot of like hey let's throw these people out there and let's see how it goes you know like show me that you can do this um we kind of shot we kind of saw that with the receiving core too you know a little bit of everything here everybody kind of got their chances um to to Mark's Point earlier it it's there there's injuries Galore already and so we don't have maybe Jackson AR maybe doesn't have the receivers that he thought he was going to have for the first game so um I'm interested to see if we get Nick Anderson back next week which I'm hoping we do but we'll see um but like overall I I just I I think our our best receiving core is is out right now I Burks the best version the best version of that room best iteration yes I I think I think Burks is pretty special I think um I I I still don't really understand the uh Brandon Thompson hype right now he didn't really show up he had a couple drops last night that I didn't really love um so I kind of expected a little bit more from him with wide receiver one next to his name so I think there's still some improvement to be made there but overall um they looked okay yeah in Mark everything we liked about the distribution in the running back room wasn't there in the wide receiver room you look at the the distribution of catches Deon Burke six Bowers sharp five Brendan Thompson four and then four players with a single catch to their name that doesn't really work that doesn't work for me seven guys catching the ball is okay but I want that number to be like 10 and I want them all to have more Target share than we saw yesterday again I think a lot of it is just Jackson doesn't play with all of these guys regularly he's used to throwing the ball to other guys and in those High leverage moments I think that's why you saw some forced balls to Brandon Thompson that I wouldn't have thrown and I'm pushing 30 you know so I again I'm I'm a little doubtful on Brennon Thompson too but really I think it's just missing guys in that room more than anything else right now the offensive line is the thing yeah M the one place we've been worried about and they did Hitman goes down right so you you're immediately having to adjust on the fly but yeah it didn't feel good nope no they they got some stuff to figure out I would not be shocked if next week is more of what we saw this week and it's you know getting a lot of guys in and not rushing guys back like I I would be pretty surprised if we see Nick Anderson next week I'd be pretty surprised I I think that they're GNA be I think they're going to be very careful and then it's going to be like okay you get one game back to kind of get your feedback under you and now here's Tennessee I think that's kind of what it's gonna be um but the offensive line they are quite glaringly and obviously in my opinion the the weakest part of this team and I I know that will change I know they get better with with as the year goes on and Bill beanball deserves us to bet on him I want that to be clear he he deserves his credit but he also will probably be the first to tell you they are not good enough right now and it's clear to anybody who watched that football game that that offensive line is not good enough right now and they need to figure it out and they got two weeks to do it they're going to get mowed over by a sec defensive line like in their current iteration like they they need to grow they need to maybe grow is not the best word they need to get better very quickly like yeah I watched the game with offensive line effici and a front of the program Ryan H and he that's not a joke he's he is though go ahead go ahead dude knows dude dude watches this stuff and he pointed out there seems to be Eddie Pierre Louise sized hole at the offensive guard spot yeah that you know him or Eugene Brooks we could we could possibly see those guys step in and play a role here at that left guard spot I thought weu was probably fine but I'd need to watch that more clearly to really zero win yeah I uh I need one more rewatch just to kind of like fully digest it go ahead Ryan now that I know what happens right yeah yeah I mean it I didn't I wasn't looking at the like pretty much like the individual players like I would on like a rewatch probably I was just more like does this is this offensive line holding up to like this does it is it working like as a as a like a unit and I just think the answer is no I mean Jackson Arnold didn't have a ton of time um the run the the our our Run game except toward the end of the game really didn't go anywhere and I think that's mostly because of our offensive line not being able to block um it it's I don't know we need we need some help on the offensive line side and I hope Bill can do it in the next couple weeks all right we need to move on to the defense uh let us know Down Below in the comments your thoughts on the defense or on the offense I should say what would you like what you not like um let us know okay defensive side of the ball amazing six turnovers they did exactly what we said they needed to do in the pregame pod basically calling them out saying they need to show that they're the best unit on this team and show it pretty clearly and they did uh the one guy I just want to shout out real quick and I think everybody's gonna feel the same Grayson Halon what a freaking game from Grayson hon man that that's fun good good for him dude that that's really cool um was just a menace um the official I stat line was oh I lost it there it is uh three total tackles one and a half sacks one and a half tackles for loss um and he had a force fumble um Grayson hen was a terror um good good for him I really like the defensive line uh push all night long whole interior of the defensive line was incredible Grayson hton looked like the guy that they've been telling us for two years he will be Jaden Jackson showed the hell up first start true freshman and he's just like breaking through the offensive line looking like a beast Ethan towns looked great uh we're not we're not ones to to really sing his Praises too too often because he's just like a lunch pail kind of guy but he showed up did his job jiren knck on the scoop and score all I want from jiren knck is him running fast in One Direction and they figured it out with the scoop and score man special teams baby yeah get know what let him return a ball or two I don't mind I don't care uh defense looked fantastic I I don't have really any quibbles with what we saw on defense I thought as the game got on yeah you're letting F Brock get some completions here and there but that's that's dumb yardage that's that's yards that aren't real in garbage time you hold any college football team to three points and I'm going to be pleased with with the production defensively the turnovers the scoring just beautiful stuff they looked like they're supposed to look this unit looked every bit like the the defense we thought they would be coming into the season that's incredibly encouraging Ryan go ahead yeah no I just agreeing with everything you guys said I thought um I thought Jane Jackson looked really great him and his him and his huge hair were everywhere so um I thought Kip I thought Kip Lewis looked really good I thought uh Danny stman looked good which is of course we're expecting Mason's favorite um you know leis Carter Robert SP Jennings I think like they they all showed up where they were supposed to and let's be completely clear this is the way they were supposed to play like we they this is a temple team that's not very good and so like we needed to show up um and they did a absolutely amazing job doing that six turnovers is unbelievable like that's just something that we haven't had in so long and it's so nice to have kind of that defensive style of playmaking back um and I'm I'm really excited to see how this defense continues to evolve um I think that you know I there wasn't really anybody on the defensive side that I was like oh that that guy he needs to play better or oh he had some misses here and like everyone like went like played pretty well like I don't really have a lot to complain about even Jaren yeah line entirely though Co McKenzie looked like mad McKenzie looks good brings the wall up but like one thing I would like to say though six sacks we are on our way to F there you go there on our way dang uh we're pretty hot this week Mark almost got the score right Ryan's saaks are right we covered uh we're we're doing good um the the interceptions to Jaden Hardy and uh Kai Walker y good good work right there on that um we should had another one too yeah Billy Bowman recovering a fumble the dude finds the ball it's yes insane have had another interception I think but he dropped it at that last minute the the you guys want to hear me be nitpicky against the defense and it's going to be really annoying and someone's going to comment about it and that's fine uh when Kendall Dolby batted that ball up into the air and he didn't get the interception he didn't know he was so mad he didn't know someone else got it he just thought he knocked it down and he's freaking out they're gonna watch that in film and be like what the hell are you doing go block for your teammate stop making it about you and they'll figure that out but like I just saw that like watching it back last night and I'm like oh yeah not a great look while your guys's trying to run and people are blocking for him um but that's okay but like the ball tipping that we had on the on the line it was it was great like it was just great sorry Mark I interrupted you no you're good jayv after canai Walker brings down that Tip Drill interception runs in and he is wearing the tightest shirt tightest like watch it back or find replay because you know they have larger sizes than this he's got to show off the work and he's the one who buttons it up all the way too the Bro the Bro refuses to be comfortable refuses it like it's crazy like we get it you're buff but like fam just relax that's not the style nowadays someone tell so early 2000s yeah you gota go relaxed fit like that's the that's the thing um so you hold Temple to 197 total yards uh 13 first downs four for3 lot that was garbage yards yeah four for 13 on third down the my final my final thought on the defense is look you can say what you want about Brent vinales the head coach like they got a show it this year and I think everybody knows that but Brent vinales the defensive mind is all over this football team and you should feel pretty damn good about it because they look like a defense that this guy has constructed over his entire career they're fast they're physical they're hungry for the ball and the interior defensive line are MERS and I'm I'm excited for it and if you're an Oklahoma fan you should be excited too does offense need work absolutely nobody's here saying they don't but this was Brent's calling card and if you're a head coach and you don't and you can't even bring a defense in in your first job as a head coach that you're known for then why are you here and Brent's done it so that makes me feel really that makes me feel really really good Zack allly Zack Alli his name at all Z Zack Alli got in front of a camera yesterday Zack Alli got in front of a camera yesterday after the game first time the local media has heard from Zach allly um so that's that's weird I don't I don't get that I don't know why that is I guess it's the first time got to talk to Seth L trell too I think maybe I don't even know I have no idea I'm not sure Seth LR still still too much lateral movement within the offense for me three Dion Burks Jet Sweep plays I'm not so sure we need even one of those no and when the first one doesn't work we definitely don't need two more so Jeff get yeah let's get some of the Gavin Freeman out of the offense but you know that's just a random thought I had as we're coaches there okay uh let us know Down Below in the comments your thoughts on the defense um what we tou really quickly on special teams yeah go real quick uh do kicking we have a kicker oh my God we have a kicker than God it's absolutely crazy people are shaking in their boots Texas is shaking in their boots about us having a kicker um they're terrified three for three y was safe it was easy he could have hit that from 58 I was just about to say he had it from 58 yeah I it's over what's and I'm blanking Kelner his name Tyler Kelner you deserve your flowers big man because that was a great performance and we are not used to having a kicker and um you know I'm I'm thoroughly impressed because that makes me feel so much better about our offense and if we for some reason can't get our offense going um like we want it to it at least we can kick the damn ball so we'll get some points on the board and we have our defense and so like I you know kicking is so important to this game we know about that and it was really really nice to to see somebody um who could do that and and hit something from over 50 and be like I I you know that was his first kick so I didn't know I expected it to I expected it to go like right or left I was like he's going to miss this it was and and then just like right down the middle and like could get it for 58 you know like we haven't seen that a long time so excited about our kicking team I got a text from my mom after he made the the second kick and she just says keep that boy away from burritos yes 100% exactly oh my god dude yes 100% uh we have a kicker holy crap we have a kicker man it's I'm not so sure we have a punter I'm not either uh I'm not either hopefully Seth the TR figures it out and we don't have use him as much as we did on Friday night okay much the return game yeah sorry just bullet pointing MVPs of the game Ryan who's your MVP man um you know I I want to say defense but we've been giving kind of a lot of [ __ ] to the offense so I do want to like I want to give mine I think to Dion Burks because the stat line that he has again we've said this before but um uh sorry I'm blanking right here six of 36 for three touchdowns it's it's obvious that this is Jackson's guy like this is the guy he's looking for and we haven't seen Nick Gerson yet so like that could change but like this is the guy he's most comfortable throwing to I think um and this is the guy who is incredibly athletic like I just watched him just just watching the guy he's so athletic um and I you know I think our receiving core as long as he stays healthy we obviously need Nick Anderson back but if he stays healthy we have a very very um talented weapon there that I'm excited to see what he is able to do for the rest of the year so um I am going to give it to to Burks love it who's your MVP Mark yeah I I think you can go a lot of different directions here I originally was going to say Grayson Halton but since we touched on him already let me go Kendall Dolby as much as we play up the cheetah position and how it's it's this versatile thing you can throw a guy who's 64 240 there and just watch him go to work all this stuff kendel Dolby is like six feet tall 185 190 pounds and absolutely locks the position down yesterday he gets in there he he makes tackles in the Run game he has excellent coverage in the past game he's he's basically just a traditional nickel but it's working for the defense and I if you told me when he came in two years ago last year whatever it was that it'd be him and Kai Walker teaming up on on an interception after a play and not jacobe Johnson in his second year not uh mcari Vickers who was inactive yesterday that you know what I'm impressed with Kendall Dolby man that dude plays a hell of a football game and he showed up yesterday my MVP love it uh my MVP is Tyler Kelner we don't cover without him Tyler Kelner is my MVP and uh again we have a kicker huge big news huge uh next game Houston coming up on Saturday a week from today
