all right the Champions League draw has a new format uh people are struggling to understand including myself here is talk sports Tom Clayton on all the changes you need to know the draw for the league phase of the champions league is complete all 36 teams have their opponents with fixture dates to be announced later this week so how did it work all 36 teams were divided into four parts based on their UFA coefficient the highest in part one then pot two and so on they were drawn out to face two from each pot one at home one away the whole draw kicked off with Manchester City being drawn to face Inter Milan at home and PSG away they also Drew ties like Juventus who are in pot two away as well as fard from pot three at home Liverpool Drew out arguably the tie of the whole competition as they faced the reigning Champions Real Madrid at anfield they also take on leig lusen and AC Milan England's only team in pot two Arsenal picked out ties against PSG Inter Milan and the Europa League winners at Atlanta and and Aston Villa's first top level European campaign in 42 years se's them face the likes of Bayern Munich leig Juventus and Celtic so how do they get to The Knockouts simple finish in the top eight of the league overall and you go straight to the Knockouts if you finish between 9th and 24th you go into a two-legged playoff against another team from that position bracket the winners go into the Knockouts against the top eight seeds who are seeded that means it's like Wimbledon where the team that finished top of the league phase won't play the team that finished second until the final still want more get a full list of who your team's drawn out on talksport.com the official fixtures they're out on Saturday well done Tom Clayton I I think um he simplified that I think it's actually quite easy to understand now um all the teams will play eight times you'll play four games a home four games away the top 18s will qualify as he said automatically to the last 16 those that are placed between ninth and 24th will competing a two-legged knockout player for the chance to join them whoever though finishes 25th remember it's 36 teams whoever finishes 25th or lower is out there is no going to the Europa League like they used to do you're out it's that it's goodbye um now in terms of the teams I mean you look at You' got you got the teams teams I've got I've got who do you think's got the hardest out of all the the British sides oh out of the British sides I'm looking at it here I mean Arsenal I think the draw has been very kind to Arsenal Arsenal haven't really got that Goliath in fact you could argue that Arsenal are the goath are the Goliath you are correct bearing in mind they're coefficient they've been very lucky there they've been very lucky you know Arsenal obviously I'm not knocking Arsenal's record in in this country or where they stand in the Great Club but they aren't they aren't a great European Force agreed so I think that they've done very well with the draw the team that actually caught my eye when I was looking at this Ed I don't know if you saw who Paris sjain got Paris sanj have been done so so badly by the the by the group they really have been been done about as aggressively as you could get they've got such such tough teams from a from a domestic perspective though I think I think Liverpool could find themselves I think they'll be fine I think they'll get through it but having to play Real Madrid and AC Milan and by Leverkusen less them well less them they're a good team Real Madrid Real Madrid and AC Mando are the two most historic teams in this competition not two Milan Liverpool I mean AC Milan Tough by name aren't they Villa first time in the Champions League uh Bayern Munich rby liic Juventus Club Bru Celtic youngboys bologna as Monaco Man City we always look at them obviously always start as one of the favorites Inter Milan Paris sgain Club Bru Juventus fard sporttin Sparta Prague and uh brattis Slava as well um you know what I think has to happen here you know do you know what I think has to happen I think that all the Premier League teams due to the riches in the Premier League due to the vast amounts of money the the ridiculous amounts of cash that sort of swish around these Shores with regards to football I don't think that any of these domestic teams any Premier League team should struggle to get through this you don't think you don't think Villa no look at vill just V vill manager is is one of the best managers in this competition one of the best managers in the Europa League no he's one of the best managers in this competition like he is look Aston Villa's manager is better than Bayern Munich's manager you know Aston Villa are managerially a huge Force financially a huge Force historically a huge Force yeah they're not a European team byct of the imagination no no but if you think about former winners of the competition in 1982 the Aston Villa went to Holland and won the European Cup I know it's a long time ago I know I know it's a long time ago but it's still it still exists yeah it's still it's still relevant to a degree surely and they're coming up against teams like Celtic young boys and Bru of course they should win of course they should win enough games to progress are you happy with this New Look Champions League no I no I find it horrendous is there a world where it's is there a world where it's good because what it should mean more group game fixtures isn't it it's just clubs again more players play more football which we've complained about a lot right they're not machines like 96 group games last season 144 this season no there's no doubt that the motivation is finance there's no doubt that the reason that these changes have been made is for finance but sometimes an offcut of a decision made for finance is beneficial to football fans is there a world where I don't think that the motivation was to create a better product isn't this just a Super League that we were all sort of kicking off about it's not a super league because there's one crucial ingredient that this still has that the Super League didn't well no it's the idea of being a meritocracy you can still earn your right here whereas the Super League didn't have that but realistically there were some points in the Champions League groups where games became fairly insignificant games became fairly fairly dull sometimes we knew who was going to win a group with with two games to spare sometimes a team had no chance of progressing through a group with two games to spare we're never we're never going to be in that situation you say that but there are 36 teams in this you can finish 24th in your group in the table and still win the Champions League yes you I'm sorry you finished 24th you should be sent packing you should be at home you should be at home but what it should mean no but you see what it leads to it leads to Jeopardy in every game it leads to a situation where there is always a reason to play there's always a reason to try and ACR points whereas in the former version of the Champions League we ended up with dead rubber games we should end up now in a world where every single point that is available is worth competing with worth competing for because you aren't you aren't simply trying to finish in the top two of a group of four you're not only competing with you're not competing with only the teams that you play You're competing with everyone which should mean that there's always an opportunity overall overall I do I completely agree with you the reason that this has happened isn't to create a better Champions League it's to try and extract as much money from the game as possible but a buy product of trying to extract as much money from the game could be some pulsating brilliant European games of football and let's face it we'll get right stuck into the Champions League when it comes around don't we no we we do we do you correct in that on am on da via the talk sport app and on your smart speaker talk sport
