[Music] okay well I guess we're just going to get right into it because that's what we do here on Village Vice and on the Sunday reaction show that is Taylor K I'm Brad law um that was not expected uh Saturday and I I say you know what let me stop I say that wasn't expected we have some people who commented on Thursday's Village Vice that said guys you've been way too overconfident I think we still have some issues here the offensive line still an issue and don't quite think pton is where he needs to be yet he missed a few throws last week and you know this going to be a really tough game and those people were right and man I was wrong and just about everybody else was wrong about Saturday Taylor what uh what are your thoughts but I mean yes we still have issues but that is not you know working out Kinks working out some of the problems I think ideally would have looked a lot different than that you can still be working out problems and not that was just that was pathetic it was pathetic and it's not like and I it was I don't know if it was in a press conference or it was just someone had a was talking to a source inside the program said huri has been so intense all week he's been so intense and this week has has seemed like it was good a good preparation week for this game and that made me feel really good because obviously you don't you don't ever want to look ahead and then the moment the momentum coming off last week yes the competition every you know we know that it wasn't great but that wasn't a couple mistakes that was not a mistakes that was 60 Minutes of horrible football yeah you don't have to hold back either if you wanted to say other stuff you can you can do that this is a safe space to do it yeah that that's what one of the things that was addressed Monday in the press conference last week was that this game was a chance to really show how different things were and that's what everybody was basing their really confident picks on was all right offensive line is better and Payton is better and the scheme is better and the wide receivers are better and I do still think that a lot of those things are in place I I just think maybe we didn't like like there are a couple of things they're better but they're still not perfect they are still capable of breaking down and clearly we saw that way too often we also probably didn't give enough credit to Cal and their you know their pass rush although we said their pass rush is very good it's a legitimate concern especially when the one area the head coach who never holds back in sugarcoats says is making them uncomfortable is the tackle position neither left tackle was effective and then the starting right tackle was injured during the game so you're dealing with left tackles who haven't grabbed the position yet and shown that they can anchor it consistently and then you have a back ight tackle who was not brought in to start he was brought in to provide depth and I I don't know it was just a to your point the coaches recognized the opportunity and for whatever reason it didn't it didn't come together by the way Today's Show is brought to you as all shows are by mybookie.ag um go to mybookie.ag use promo code next round they're going to double your initial deposit they're going to double it which is incredible of the folks at mybookie.ag so help kick off the football season with the presenting sponsor of Village Vice mybookie.ag okay um where where do we start I I'll tell you I can I can start on defense the first half C's offense was almost Flawless they missed a field goal or else they would have had a lead after their second possession of the ball game um their quarterback Mendoza I think his first 16 or 17 passes the only incompletion that he had was a throwaway intentionally um they use the Diego Pavia Jerry Hill formula which is take seven yards take seven yards on a first down and Auburn's Corners were not didn't play at the level they should have Auburn safeties weren't fantastic um they tackled well didn't give up just huge you know touchdowns of 60 yards but they couldn't get off the field that's what I think it was last Sunday when we talked about about concerns after the Alabama A&M game Mike that was the secondary and that again I mean that I guess validifi if that's a word my concern there and on a positive note or however I don't know how you can't really be positive but the defense made adjustments in the second half and they looked better what but you can't you can't rely on defense so you like you have to be effective offensively to win games and hrey said in a PR like I I posted the clip on Twitter last week um on the next round said we you know like you were saying a little bit ago this is our chance to prove that we can run an effective and a consistently explosive offense and that was not where was that nowhere no they ran 57 plays there were five drives of two plays or less because of turnovers that that was and I get their freak things that happened the beginning after the first drive of the game I immediately I thought okay this is not this is not good stuff I mean stuff like that happens but the interceptions what and P this is his fifth year as a as a quarter like he's been playing college football for five years so what and you know last week the off season was y'all have all these great receivers but who's gonna throw them the ball last week like okay there's a there's a glimpse of Hope there might be a little bit of light and he I mean he didn't look at it and it's too it's way too early in the season to have one of these slip up games in my opinion and it's not and it's not you just got outplayed it's not like you you don't have the talent you have the talent you just didn't perform yeah well that's that's the question going forward and here's what I would want to try to to try to do all right let's don't do what some of us probably did last week and for those who said not to do it last week let's don't do it this week and I'll tell you what that is after we we give a shout out to our friends at Barner Supply Company um man I feel like garbage after a loss like that but at least I can look good in my Barner Supply Company hat and if you want to look good in the Barner Supply Company hat too you know what you're always winning with Barner Supply Auburn people overreact don't think Auburn's going undefeated and The Season's made because you put up historic offensive numbers against an outclass opponent and more of us should have taken to that more of us should have listened I didn't listen I overreacted happily I happily overreact to good things but I would say if you were one of the ones that cautioned don't overreact after a good thing let's try not to overreact after a bad thing there are lots of teams that struggled and still won their weak two games noted a struggled and lost to Northern Illinois and there is no transitive property it doesn't do any good to compare opponents that you lose to that sucks all the way around so but I I I don't think it's as simple Taylor as well Payton Thorne can't get it done because he threw four interceptions I don't think it's as simple as that I think that's part of it I think Payton's got to play better but I think the offensive line got whipped and I think that on a couple of the interceptions receivers ran wrong routes all right put Hank Brown in and let the receiver run the wrong route the quarterback's throwing to a spot they're going to pick that off if the receiver runs the wrong route Hank's going to throw an interception there Jaylen milrose is goingon to throw an interception there Brady Cook's gonna throw an interception there Carson Beck's gonna throw an interception there Brett Favre is going to throw an interception there Tom Brady's gonna you get the point I don't think it's as simple it's not just the quarterback when you have five turnovers you can't put the ball on the ground you can't run wrong routes you got to block guys like it's you got to fix a lot on offense from yesterday through the rest of the year to avoid games like that and that's something that I was especially with the younger guys that I was paying attention to last week was you know how well will they transition a lot of them at this time last year were playing High School football and it didn't seem like there were many mental errors last week again yes the opponent but that kind kind of stuff yeah doesn't you know running the running the correct route is it that's mental that's a mental a mental thing you have to know you know where you're supposed to be and when you're supposed to be there and so that it's kind of surprising to me if which I haven't looked at numbers yeah but that I wonder I wonder what's happening there but now looking forward because yester I mean I was pissed off all day yesterday I was pissed off I was at one of my very best friends Bachelorette trip and they were like you have to get up and I was like y'all it's it's an issue it's an issue and I will admit that but it's moving forward how will they how are they going to react to this you know you cannot hang your head it's the second game of the season yeah so I'm curious to see you know what they look like moving forward if they're down in the dumps or if they can use this as motivation which I mean I that's I expect I expect it to use his motivation but that doesn't feel good that cannot feel good especially you know two games into the season yeah and you can't again you can't let it so like Notre Dame is a great example Notre Dame beats Texas A&M in week one how much good did that do him against Northern Illinois it didn't do him any good at all um I thought this was interest I had I had this thought this morning but but you know what before I get there I got to ask this said you were at a bachelorette party this weekend I was and and you're devastated about the loss I was and you didn't and you didn't you so so it's an afternoon game you've got a Saturday night bachelorette party I'm not trying to get anybody in trouble or dive in anybody's business but like that would seem to be a welcome distraction was it a welcome distraction or was it just like or or was the night ruined because you were too into your feelings about the game I mean I was the second half so my my friends don't um they don't care nearly as much which is fine you like you know you're interested in what you're interested in but I at the end of the fourth quarter we during halftime we went to a bar to get drinks for a dinner and at the end of the fourth quarter I had to step away from the table because I was like they don't they really don't care like they're going to you know they're going to say oh that's s Auburn lost and that's where the majority of us graduated from but like it's not going to none of them are going to be beat up about it so I was like I'm just gonna um remove myself from this situation and they they all understand that but I was like I'm just going to go take a take a walk for a second I was able to um try to let it go it was lingering in the backr I liter I felt physically ill I felt ill and it's not the ill of like that is a heartbreaking loss that is what the hell did I just watch yeah what did I just watch and coming off and I I am the queen of unrealistic expectations I and I like I will I I will admit that so after last week I was coming off big side I was like recruiting is going incredible we looked better we looked better week one let's let's start the season five and0 yeah and I get I get the highest of highs and then I will stoop to the lowest of lows that's just how it goes so I was able to I mean I still I had a fun night but it did at one point they were like you have to like yeah be okay and I was like yo I'm trying like I'm trying so hard but give me like three more hours and then maybe I'll be okay but then I wake up this morning I'm like that wasn't my nightmare last night that happened that happened how did that happen with how how well things are going right now but it's my my emotions are out of control out of control it's so funny it's it reminded me a lot of last year when Auburn got on a little hot streak at the end of October and and the beginning of November and we're like all right New Mexico state's coming to town go win that and get to seven wins and then you got Alabama and you got a chance to be on a big winning streak when Alabama comes in and then look out and then the Mexico State happens now let let me be clear New Mexico state is a worse loss than Cal but I was more surprised by the Cal loss than I was the New Mexico State loss because sure Alabama was the next week and Hugh fre is spending way more time on recruiting and he's leaving the the offensive game plan to somebody else and it's New Mexico state but like we've had some pretty big games and wins and we got some momentum and it's very easy to look past them you w looking pass Cal iron B's not next week this is the offense they want in place receivers are better you couldn't again this is not a worse loss than New Mexico state but I'm far more but I'm far more surprised by it and it brings to mind something that he said I think it was at media days he was asked about playing up against Georgia and Alabama last year and beating Alabama a couple times at Old Miss and you know really being up for big opponents and he offered again he's very candid and we love that about Hugh fre but he said you know need to do a better job maybe I need to do but I don't remember exactly the words and I'm not trying to I'm not trying to twist it to what I want to say but what he said was something to the effect of maybe I need to do a better job of playing of having our guys at the same level for every game because that really did feel like for whatever reason the offense just wasn't prepared either they were prepared on the first drive pton thoron made some NFL throws on the first drive and raldo Fairweather and cam Coleman and kls made some big time catches on the first drive but after that it just it was disjointed from the ver from the second Drive of the game once they went for it on fourth down had a couple incompletions in a row around Midfield and turned the ball over they were losing the field position game they were losing the first down battle um cal made play you know they gained positive yardage on first down Auburn didn't um they just they were disjointed the whole game after that first touchdown drive and maybe maybe it is fair that the head coach says himself you know our guys sometimes don't have the same intensity for every game like we do the big games and that's something to work on and I think that that is human nature to an extent when you know the ironball for example Georgia those you're just there's going to be more hype around those games because of what they are and that didn't I don't have any sort of data to back this up but I just feel like it was so early in the season to have such a fluky game like that if we have the potential to be as good as everyone seems to think and it's not just and it's not just Auburn people saying you know we they could be really good this year the team could be a lot better yeah it's the Game Day game it's everyone is saying you know watch out for Robert not saying that they're gonna they're going to win a National Championship but in relation to the past few seasons it's the national people saying it too and I just feel like later in the season there's probably you know there's some fatigue there's there's exhaustion from the season and I feel like those spooky games are more like to happen at that point but the second week of the year come on and it wasn't just a couple players having a bad game it was the it was everything seemed off and I I didn't even know what to think about it it just nothing was and it wasn't just like it wasn't falling our way it was yeah mistake after mistake after mistake yeah and and you know look Cal led the country in turnovers last year led the country not they had a good year they were pretty good at it relative to whatever they were the best in the country at forcing turnovers last year and they I think only have one turnover to their first two games this year so ball security is a strength of theirs we didn't expect special teams to be as much of a strength Auburn started two drives at the two yard line and again you just can't look I know it's cliche but you can't turn the ball over five times and win very many games Auburn had a lot of chances they turned it over five times um Cal missed two field goals in the game there were chances for this to be a lot bigger a score than it was all those problems and then Auburn had two or three possessions in the fourth quarter with a chance to tie the game and then the turnovers you know rear reared their ugly head again so well in that the score I'm surprised that there wasn't a bigger Gap yeah because we did like there were chances there were so many opportunities and like you said misfield goals the starting from the two yard line obviously it is an ideal but you're going to be put in those situations when you're playing when conference plays Stark you're going to be playing some of the best teams in the country you're G to be playing Elite competition Cals like they yes they had a great game and they took advantage of Auburn slip ups but that's the competition's only going to get better yeah so I mean and I'm not saying the next few weeks but once you get into the thick of the season competition's going to get better so you have to learn how to how to capitalize when you have the opportunities because sometimes you're gonna have to start from the two yard like you have you have to be able to adjust and that's and that's why I say let's don't overreact after the second week like some of us did in the other direction after the first week because there is a chance to grow let me let me talk a little more about that after we talk about rowack if you go to roback.com RH o b c k rack.com use our promo code which is vice2 VI I20 vice2 you get 20% off anything and everything and that's men's gear women's gear um gosh they have shorts and shirts and hoodies and polos and quarter Zips and everything you could possibly want so you're talking about you load up your cart load up I don't know $100 worth of stuff get 20% off get $20 off load up $1,000 worth of stuff and get $200 off use our promo code vice2 at rack.com you'll look great feel great and be glad that you did it is the second week thank goodness for the 12 team playoff you can still go out and have a nine and three type of you know you have a nine and three season and win a lot of games late qualify for the playoff I hear everybody with the eye rolls right now week one clearly not an indicator of what you do in week two therefore week two does not have to be an indicator of what will happen in week three or six or nine or 12 or any other week of the season but they've got to clean up the offensive line hopefully to tall is not injured seriously and and can come back and play because we can see that for the recruiting that still why you talk about stacking classes and why the recruiting momentum is so important is you're not there yet you're still trying to climb there are still areas where you're deficient from a talent and depth of talent perspective so you got to clean up the offensive line got to clean up the rece you know we didn't see the rotation of receivers that much Malcolm Simmons had one catch cam only had two Perry didn't have a catch um the reason you don't get the rotation is because you had five drives in after two plays or less so you're not subbing guys onto the field and rolling them on when you have a chance when you only have a chance to run 57 plays so that's got the receivers have to be cleaner line as to be cleaner draz can't put the ball on the ground Payton's got to be better like everybody every single position group has something that they can look at from this game and go uh I'm gonna I'm gonna improve personally so that everybody on the team achieves more they've got to do that going forward or else it will be clearly a much longer season than any other us thought but it doesn't have to be if you go in and you fix those issues that's which I feel like this is you know you can look at previous years and I guess not really analytics but just what's happened in the past but I guess it's also sort of opinion based because I think Zach said something earlier this off season about I don't really think that wins and losses will directly correlate this season with you know how well the staff's able to recruit which I don't I mean OB losing isn't going to help but I guess the pitch that's being sold to a lot of these guys is you know you can come here you can have an immediate impact and be the start of something special but there were some big names on campus yesterday so what do you think this game did you know in terms of where Auburn stands with a lot of those guys because yeah we obviously have positions of need moving forward yeah I think it's a good question I think it all depends on on the pitch if the pitch is look we've already started this journey and look at where we're going then it's not a good look right if the pitch is we still got a ways to go look we we've started it but the train really hasn't left the station yet and now you can see how badly we need people like you and and guys with your talent at your positions and and that kind of thing they're not I mean nobody you know you know there's a reason that Auburn wasn't ranked to start the season there's a reason some people thought Auburn was 10th or so and everybody thought that was too low and I still think that can be too low again I'm still very high on what this team can be you week one didn't impact week two week two doesn't impact week three all those things are absolutely true now you have to do some things a little differently now you can't lose to Oklahoma can't lose to Arkansas Arkansas looked good by the way at Oklahoma State Travis Williams and that defense shut Oklahoma State down for almost the entire first half um they just didn't have enough offense to to finish the job but they can run the ball better their defense is a little better um I think what it shows us is we got to stop with these well you're probably going to start the season Five-0 or 4-0 or you're probably going to win those four or five games in a row and build a little momentum no probably can't do that anymore probably have to go one week at a time probably have to focus on New Mexico and make sure you beat New Mexico and then focus on Arkansas and make sure you beat Arkansas and then you can look at Oklahoma that you kind of touched on this a little bit earlier but obviously the overreaction which no no I'm not going to call it an overreaction because you can react to to what we saw you can be upset about that I I firmly believe but people say saying where's Hank where's Hank and you said earlier it's not yeah he he made some mistakes as did a lot of other people on the field yeah but how much of that from from pton from what we saw from pton do you think is a Payton problem and then how much do you think is kind of a domino effect of everything that's happening around him because you know everyone's calling for his head now saying yeah see he's the issue he's the issue but I mean you made points earlier to where he's not just the he's not the only issue he's not the only problem well I I thought this was interesting and again what I credit the head coach among many things I credit him for but one of them is the fact that he doesn't sugar coat anything I think he's gonna tell us in his Monday press conference and on tiger talk he's gonna tell us exactly how many of those were pton and how many of them were wrong routes or protect or just a good play by the defense that's possible too um but we're gonna find out exactly what it is at the next media opportunity but I thought it was interesting that Kent Austin the quarterback's coach was on postgame radio with us and he said we have to make sure we are doing a good enough job in practice of giving everybody at every position equal opportunities to show what they can do and and be on the field so do you think that they which again it's the second game of the season I get that but do you think that there's a chance they might go a different direction or at what point would they do that because you know if you roll Hank out to start the third game which I'm not saying that I think that they're going to do that I do not yeah but then if that doesn't work out you've depleted the confidence of the guy who all offseason you've said this is our guide this is our guide we trust him we trust him we didn't go to the portal because we're confident that he can do what needs to be done to be successful so you you know it's kind of that's the thing to be UL with what you're doing because yeah when when people are watching the game and I've been guilty of this too for teams that I've followed and and whether it's a you know whether it's a basketball player football player baseball pitch you know pitcher in a baseball Series or whatever and you go oh he strug go get him go change pitchers you got you got to change P you gotta get a different quarterback you gota man this guy's fouling everybody you gotta get him out of the game whatever it is it's a knee-jerk reaction coaches if if coaches start making knee-jerk reactions they're gonna be out of a job in a hurry you can't do that so you bring Hank in and a receiver runs the wrong route and he throws a pick or if you bring Hank in and the tackle says Olay and he gets rushed into a throw and an all-conference defensive back on another team makes a play on a rushed throw off his back foot are you are you going to boo Hank are you going to boo Hank and say well let's get him out of there it's clearly he's the problem I mean all right so now bring in the third guy same issues well now you got nobody and nobody thinks you believe in them nobody's like it's just and I understand it's complex and I'm not saying you leave a guy out there to throw eight interceptions I'm just saying it's not as easy as you know well clearly you have to do something different it's not it's not that clear that's so so I don't know I like I'm I'm so curious to know what practice is going to be like early in this week does Hank get a few more reps or do they go over it in film and they go this is this is this shouldn't have happened nobody's perfect go do better pton going forward and you give him the and he's earned the chance to do that I don't know but I bet we find out Monday well that's I'm I'm very interested to listen to the press conference tomorrow because I do think if it was I mean the coaches are watching on the sideline so if they you know late into the third quarter during the fourth quarter if they thought pton is a disaster Payton is a wreck yeah then they could have they could have said you know let's let's try something else but they obviously didn't think that he was you know he was a big enough issue to where if they just switch out you know yeah just change out the quarterback and things things will be solved but it's also something which I um the knee-jerk reaction I'm very guilty of that as well but I I hate the fans the fans the social media I love the banter and it's basically what I do for a living but Swan we all have jobs it and so it's also like yes you're frustrated but like you're saying it's a lot more complex than than what we see just sitting here watching watching on the TV because what were their responsibilities on you know the third Drive of yeah whatever game we might not know that but it's just the support they still need to feel like they're supported by the fan base yeah they're they're more disappointed in themselves than we are in them but that I hate seeing that kind of stuff which I mean I'm guilty of expressing my frustrations as well but I don't know I'm very interested to see to see how this week goes practice wise I I think they can take criticism I think that part of it is fine I don't know that they really feel it all that much but is the like where should the criticism it's not just as easy as four interceptions pull them out gotta make a change right it's not that easy now you may come into press conference tomorrow and go we looked at the tape three of the four were Payton's fault and as a result we're gonna split reps in practice this week and may the best man win he might yeah or he might come out and say one of them was Payton's fault and one was a great play by the by the corner and another was uh because he got rushed because we didn't block a guy and the other one was because the receiver ran a wrong route and we've got to do a better job as an entire offensive staff of making sure that all 11 of our offensive players on the field are doing their job at the right time because if there's one breakdown there's a chance for a turnover and that's it's I feel like a lot of the spot like is obviously on the quarterback a lot they get a lot of Praise they also receive a lot of the criticism and then going into this season it was multiplied because the quarterback is a question it has been that's not something that anyone came into the season feeling Uber confident in and rightfully so because we haven't seen you know play on the field that would lead us to you know to go without doubt or go without concern so I think that's but it's the spotlights already on the quarterback no matter you know no matter what team you're on yeah and then take into consideration everything else that's happened and that's multiplied and then to like that was just not what anyone needed to happen tomorrow coming off you know such positive energy after week one I'm trying to be okay I'm trying really hard are you ready for dway tomorrow I texted them well pregame pregame he uh I went into the chat just to say hello and the first four things I read were talking about how my reaction after I would do post game with them after losses last year and I was immediately like what in the heck did Don way just say because they're not just talking about this for no reason and Lance was like um yeah he said there's absolutely no way that they lose game and I always get so pissed off when he talks like that about AUB because he knows the power that he holds we saw what happened to a the he knows the power that he holds and I after that game I mean I will text him and I'm like keep the name out of your mouth you know what you do and you do you think that it's funny it's not funny because it actually like it it um it really negatively impacts my mental health so I think that you think my reaction's funny but I texted him uh right after the game I can't remember exactly what I said but something along the L L of I hope that you know that I completely blame this on you so just sleep on that tonight can you do that in does it work in Reverse can you talk about them going up to Wisconsin and winning by 30 no D way has this this weird power that he holds and it's not just with auburn it's with like a player he'll say that this is going to be my breakout player of the season and they tear their ACL the next day and there's a history of I don't know they can tell stories from 12 years ago of this stuff happening but then he says stuff to about Auburn he'll say it on air and then he'll just turn around in his chair and look at me and wait for me to hear it through the little delay and see my reaction he gets entertainment out of it but it it genuinely pisses me off and he knows that but he thinks it's fun so no I don't know what's gonna happen tomorrow between dunway and I but it's probably not gonna be pretty all right well that's a reason to watch the next round live tomorrow that's for sure and there's always a great reason to go to the barn auburn.com right there at the at the bottom of the screen there the bar auburn.com follow us as well on social media um we kept the same graphic as as we did for Thursday show because we're still talking about Cal and we're still talking about what it means and you know you might need a six-pack of something to get over this this loss so we thought it was maybe appropriate to keep the same graphic on the side of the screen um it'll be all right it'll get better it is a long season clearly stuff has to improve I love that well if they play like that right chances are they're not going to have five turnovers every game just it's got to get cleaned up and you can't start looking multiple games down the you know down the schedule it's New Mexico right now that's where we are would we like to be able to look past New Mexico sure do we think that we'll be able to do that in a few years probably just not there yet yeah if not I'll be in a mental institution somewhere I'll tell you that but also we have uh pton Thorne will be on Tuesday day at 9:25 so that will definitely be an interesting conversation and I'm sure he's not looking forward to having to uh speak on speak on this again but yeah it's part of it but 9:25 on Tuesday if anyone is interested in hearing him that's a that's a great note like set the reminder on your phone for like 9:20 and and make sure you tune in if you're not already watching the next
