ABC listen podcasts radio news music and more but the que of consistency will claim their second cup the Brisbane Lions return to the den premier of 2023 by 17 points that's the sound of Brisbane winning the 2023 aflw Premiership well this weekend we are in for the newest edition of that comp it's getting underway so we're getting you up to speed in the NRL it's a round that will have enormous implications for the top eight who makes it who doesn't where your team might finish in the overall seedings we're also catching up with the US Open where the Aussies are flying and the par Olympic games where the Aussies are flying plus sound bites I'm Patrick stack this is ABC Sport Daily aflw launches this weekend and that means storylines Galore ABC Sports Lauren bordon he is here to help us understand what we need to know Loz let's start with the contenders reigning Premier Brisbane they're going to enter as a force again who's going to be their biggest competition spot on stacky I think brisbane's one to look out for even though some aren't really tipping them to go back to back but I mean no one ticked them to win the Premiership last year and they came and did that and kind of fired up Craig starich that he was able to reinvent a few players and get that Premiership so I think North Melbourne's the big one that needs to take that next step up and there is a little bit of recent form of those that have lost the Grand Final going on to win the Premiership and you just look at North Mel when the captains have tipped North to get there and to win the Premiership they were already strong last year made it to the Grand Final barely any time left in this match North Melvin trying to hold it in and there it is north mowen have finally done it they've brought it to the best and they'll playing their first ever AFL W Grand Final they've been able to get Vicky wall back from Ireland so she spent last season in Island she was excellent in the forward line a know bright orange Boots the season beforehand and they' picked up liby bur as well in defense so I think that just means North Melbourne has got to really be the main Contender here against Brisbane Adelaide will still be strong and jalong you can't count them out either just made it to the preliminary final couldn't make it to the final one they're still a little bit young but I think they're a contender in my eyes let's talk offseason pickups Daisy Pierce has been one of the biggest names in the coach he's coaching West Coast how significant will the Pierce impact be I think it's going to be very significant for West Coast for a couple of reasons one will be professionalism and just everything that she brings over there in terms of Fitness skills and high standards I think that's a main thing the West Coast have needed with eight wins across their history it's a fair bit of losing so far so to to give them the the confidence that you know what we're missing and what we need to improve and work on isn't going out and Reinventing football or chasing Talent it's just putting into place a system that we can really train consistently and I think think prominence the eagles they haven't had many wins they won five out of 28 games under Michael PRI their previous coach and when you've only got a 10 or 11 round season you kind of need to be winning to be in that media cycle and be spoken about and I think having Daisy Pierce there right now we're talking about West Coast when maybe leading into this season they're not going to have the greatest year but we might not have been speaking about them but with Daisy Pi there she puts them on the map and hopefully she sticks around for a while and starts building them up the ladder so in terms of onfield talent then who moved clubs who do you think might make the biggest impact I'm really excited uh sticking to the west to see Gabby Newton over at freemantle so she was a number one draft pick when she went to the Western Bulldogs had a few shoulder reconstructions came back into the side and there's been a little bit of an exodus from the Western Bulldogs over the offseason and she's one that's decided to go west uh and play for freem mantle and I just think she'll be excellent in that forward line she can swing back if needed but freem manal haven't got the leadership of Kiara Bowers and an stannett their Captain this season who are both on the active list and I think she's still young but she brings a little bit of leadership and just a strong marking Target preferably in the forward line that's where I like to see her play but she also can drop back into that halfback line if that's where Freeman will need her the Sydney Swans were probably the feel-good story of 2023 I'm thinking beer festivals in Merrickville I'm thinkinking you know beautiful grounds like North Sydney oval and Hensen Park who do you see as the positive vibe club for this edition of the aflw I think Sydney continued to be that positive vibe club with the fans that they got there too they averaged more than 5,000 fans which was above the competition average and North Sydney oal always packs out which is why they've earned the right to host the season opener but jong's another one for me is the good vibe Club they've got that similar feeling of Sydney where they have Cadia Park where fans go out and see it they've got that I guess small town Vibe where everyone really supports jalong they've got some really fun players to watch like Georgie prara you just loves seeing her go about it spus once again just so dangerous and so much composure through the middle of the ground to be able to get the footy out to teammates in space and have better looks and efficient for you speaking BR Parker up to the 28 disposal six touches this quarter good leaders me McDonald's their captain and she's just I guess when you're talking about a Vibe she's just a really good footy brain a wonderful person to chat to so I think Jong for their home ground advantage and just the excitement that they bring to the competition having again like Sydney a few years ago didn't win a game and now they've got to the fact that they're a preliminary finalist I think they'll be one uh that will be drawing the crowds this season so if that's the who's going to be winning The Vibes who's going to be winning the comp just give us a short tip uh I will tip Brisbane I'll tip Brisbane to go back to back even though I think North Melbourne will push them again Lauren bordon she's going to be calling the action throughout the aflw season Lo thanks so much for your time thanks Dy at the US Open Australia's men they're having a really great tournament so far Jordan Thompson knocked over Herbert herat in straight set well for the first time ever Jordan Thompson beats a top 10 player at a grand slam fabulous win for the AL who knocks out the number seven seed he will next play mat araldi if he wins that could be an all Aussie fourth round because Alex demono has Dan Evans in his third rounder and they're in the same section of the draw just saying meanwhile Lexi poin has the biggest match of his career he's going to take on Novak jovic Arthur Ash Stadium Saturday morning Australian Time Imagine 25 years old career best form and you're playing the most successful man in the sports history on the biggest Court the game has in New York City juicy stay across it by checking abc.net.au usport Australia's made a great start to the par Olympics four medals on day one in the pool Brandon Hall took out Bronze in the S9 400 met freestyle Lisha Patterson took silver in the women's equivalent of that event the men's s1050 M freestyle sort two for the Aussies gold to Thomas Gallagher huge week for the Gallaghers Oasis getting back together also and bronze to Rowan CS the wheelers they lost their first match in the wheelchair basketball to the Netherlands and the Steelers unfortunately went down to team GB in the wheelchair rugby AKA murder bable again if you want the best stories from the paralympic games make sure you go to the ABC Sport website abc.net.au SLS sport if the NRL was a golf tournament this weekend would be moving day there are teams who can climb into the eight or slide out of it there are top four consequences in play for a big round you need a big brain Zack Bailey is an NRL reporter with Channel 9 Zack let's start dogs manly Friday night footy is there a sense this game will Define canterbury's top four chances yeah certainly I like that Moving Day moving round in the NRL it's like the finals have come two weeks early uh the Bulldogs I know that their fans say the Bulldogs are having a party and storming up the ladder there a good chance of finishing in the top four but it all hinges on tonight's match and there's so much on the line it looks like there's going to be 35 to 40,000 people out there so it is going to be final like intensity between two top eight teams for the dogs top four hopes on the line for manly a home Final on the line in terms of they have to win to keep those chances alive and that's going to be crucial for them if they want to do anything beyond week one of the finals the dogs they're the glamour Story So Far they're the Cinderella story of the NRL but now a bit of pressure on them because they have gone so well a lot of people are now focusing on them their fans are you know packing the streets of Belmore every time they have a [Applause] win without their Captain Steven cden without Kurt man tonight it's going to be a little bit more difficult especially manly they'd be hurting after a shock loss for the Tigers last week but uh yeah it's all on the line tonight for the dogs if they want a top four finish which would be remarkable they simply have to win the Panthers also in action they need to beat the bunnies to stay in control of their top four Destiny but can I get you two cents on L Trail Mitchell there's been sanctions fines promises to change do you think the club and the star are going to walk the walk now they've talked the talk oh it's a good question firstly I think South could have handled the situation far better the the photo scandal that involved the trail was released on August 16 the club Only handed down its findings yesterday they wouldn't put anyone on camera after those findings were H I think they should have come up either the TR the CEO someone should have come forward soon after the event and owned it and everyone would have almost moved on by now the clubs say it's not a distraction for them I dare say most of the players wouldn't be distracted this week given it's a couple of weeks old and they're used to the TR being in the headlines whether it be for good or bad the bunnies I guess the thing motivating them is they can really upset the Panthers tonight they're down on troops so no cam Murray no latr Mitchell a couple of other injuries as well so interesting thing with the bunnies right now is they're trying to say that lro could be fit next week for a game that he won't be able to play in just so that he gets his one match band served this year and not in round one next year so it's a bit of a circus at the moment but as of next week we'll all move on the bunnies will be out of the finals contention or they are out of finals contention and we'll know whether L trol is fit for round one or not somehow somehow the bronos season is still alive and if they beat the fins and the dragons falter at parah they'll be into the eight which is Bonkers can Brisbane do it they can I don't know whether they will it's funny a few weeks ago when they lost to the Titans and it was absolute boil over we thought well that is the line the red pen is out it's through the Broncos last year's Runners up what an incredible performance 46 points 28 the Gold Coast Titans defeating the Brisbane Broncos it was a remarkable thought From Grace yes they've had injuries to key players there's been a bit of talk about them getting too far ahead of themselves we didn't know whether it was a hangover from last year's Grand Final but the one thing I will say is when you've got the likes of Pat carrian you've got Adam Reynolds you've got Katon Stags these are rep or former rep players um they're a star started lineup there's talk that pay hus could return with those kind of players they can definitely win um it's it's a f potential final shootout the do the Dolphins and Broncos whoever loses this game is definitely out the dragons meanwhile well Shane flanigans put a rocket up his team this morning at his press conference saying that we don't want to just make finals footy my team needs to show they want to play finals footy because they didn't last week so he wants his team to be desperate and show that desperation as you said Moving Day the roosters have the Raiders Sunday AO ex wabby Mark nangi tasi is on the extended list for the chooks it' be a shock to see him play this season but intriguing that they name him says something doesn't it yeah it's a it's a remarkable story given he could play essentially three codes in the space of a couple of months having played for the warar as you said he was the World Cup representative for the w last year went over to the Olympics and played rugby sevens and the only arriv at the roosters a couple of weeks ago now he did play Junior footy in terms of NR alongside Adam dwey in his school days but this would be a remarkable Story the door is open because Joseph SW is out injured Trent Robinson has said all along look it's unlikely he'll play this year but it's a big surprise on Tuesday when he was named on the reserves but it would just be a great story to see Marky Mark pull on the roosters colors two weeks out from the finals and if they do something you know special year would be a remarkable story if he's some way part of that so watch his SPAC as to where the Marky Mark will play huge round of footy coming up Zack Bailey thanks so much for your time canot wait sty sound bites as we said the poers have kicked off and have you heard about the uk-based channel 4 making history with the first ever deaf TV presenter how does that work let's hear from Rose alen El yeah it is a bit competitive there's a lot going on so obviously you're hearing so you have a ear but I'm too de for that so I have a lovely Kirsty over there and she's going to be my earpiece lady and then I also got Rebecca and Toby And they're going to be my interpreter and translation when you're speaking and also when we have a desk here and also I got a tablet here that our boss will be writing so every now and then I might have a little look so there had a lot going on have you ever been intimidated at the workplace Aussie tennis player leeu lived a very public version of that in his round one loss with Carlos alarz yeah look I'm not going to lie uh you know he came out and he's in his jacket and I was like okay and then we go to the coin toss and he took his jacket off and I was like dude this guy's a specimen from from from the from the Coos from the coints I was like okay this guy's a beast like I just couldn't stop looking his shoulder definition in the veins speaking of Ls who are a weapon surely you're across Michael Vos going all crime fighter on us this week if you're not he was getting his morning coffee in Melbourne when he chased down a teenager who'd allegedly pinched a car the cafe owner was also involved and he had to redo the Carlton coach's coffee order everyone's very very lucky this morning there was not something more serious happened went to remake his coffee um but he yeah he I think he gets a few coffees on the house same Fair reward for vossy doesn't it
