Miss podcast your first listen every day we're free and available wherever you get your podcast including YouTube we are part of the locked on podcast Network your team every single day hello I'm Steven Willis from the locked on Miss podcast and I'm joined by Miss Legend John Forcade as he is going to join me from time to time this football season to talk about John the most anticipated football season probably since Archie Manning played that Miss has been through oh I have to agree with that it's um you know the between the media and the press and you know radio and TV shows and people just walking around I was in Oxford last about two weeks ago and um yeah it was uh Lively there they're they're all getting excited we're all getting excited we talked heavily about the SEC and college football last night on a special we had at one of the casinos so yeah yeah the talk is about Old Miss in the top 12 in that playoff pitcher and we shall see what happens what do you think is the reason why the national media has chosen this year to gravitate towards Soul Miss well I think because of the uh expansion of of the playoffs when you got 12 teams it been four teams I don't think you'd get the coverage you might get some comments at some say so about Old Miss if it was a fouram but now it's a 12 team and what they did last season to end the year on a on a big note uh Lane kein you know he's won some ball games he he didn't get him over the hump yet and the fact that they were number one in the transfer portal so let's see what he can do with the much better Talent than he's had in the past you know do you look at what's going on in college football right now and just think man man what what could have been for me you know what yeah I wouldn't I'm sitting here about to have my 33rd and 34th surgeries and I'm just figuring this out that if IID have played at the time that they play now compared to when I played then uh being in the shotgun a lot and not running as much as I I did back when I played and uh the style of teams that we played in in the way the rules are uh totally different but listen you know you can go back and everybody can reminisce and things and you know they wouldn't you know they they would be saying you know I would be doing what Tim TBO did or Johnny Manzel and things of that nature can can do in college football nowadays compared to the old days you know we ran ball you know 30 40 times a game and and I ran pretty much 15 16 20 times and he I took my beating but that's that's part of the game back then it was a ver Wishbone Style and very little passing now it's more or less 6040 passing versus running yeah I think you and Arie Manning are the two quarterbacks like before the spread offense era that would have performed really well in this era there's no doubt Archie style of play was sort of like mine in a way we we did a lot of scrambling we did a lot of running U the ball was in our hands majority of the time and you know the old saying you know the game never starts unless the Center snaps the ball at the quarterback and he can do two things for sure that three things excuse me head it off run or throw so you know two out of three I'm dealing with the football and Archie knows dog on well how it is to be able and you saw back when Archie played he had the football in his hand quite a bit but you don't see that nowadays you know for example Dart when he's playing he'll run you know 6 seven eight time Matt caral was the same way but they're asking him to throw the football and run you know a little but a it's not like when RG3 and Lamar Jackson those guys played college football where they were heavy loaded on the running and they threw a little bit they weren't the greatest throwers in all of you know college football but they used their feet and that's the big thing about when I did it I did it at the line of scrimmage when they're doing it back in these days the quarterbacks are six seven yards deep they can see things easier and it's already kind of designed uh you're running a football whereas triple option you don't know if you're handing it off running or pitching out of the modern quarterbacks that are playing um college football in recent years and all that what do you think your comp would be of of a modern quarterback what do you what the what quarterback now would you compare favorably to okay um well I Quarterback Playing Styles would have to say you know I can't say t-bo because he couldn't throw the football that well you know it'd be the Johnny Manzel where you know he could scramble run and still throw the football um I hate using that terminology because you know he's such a dud now you know and uh but from what he did you know he he was one that could do the running and the throwing um nowadays you you don't see that much of uh the quarterbacks running as much as you did back you know 10 15 years ago uh it was a combination of you know they threw the ball out but he ran the ball out you know Manel and some of the other quarterbacks Lamar you know RG3 and guys like that but the style playing now is they want to tone down the quarterback running because you still can get hit you don't want to lose them quarterbacks but um you know they tone down the the spread offense of the quarterback running a lot you know if you if you're carrying 15 16 times a game maybe 17 it's down maybe 8 to 12 8 to 10 they don't they don't necessarily want you to run that much but I was a little bit different style I was much bigger than Manzel bigger than Lamar bigger than RG3 so they knew I could run and and take the hits because it it's it's a little bit different now DBS running backs I mean excuse me DBS linebackers weren't as big as they are now or as fast as they were back when I played they're quicker now and you got 300 PB lineman can run down quarterbacks now so that's probably why you don't see a lot of quarterbacks running because lineman are running four fs and four sixes and that's a little tough when you got a 300 pound of chasing you who was keeping up with you you know LAN kein during this fall camp this is kind of like a Kinder gentler fall camp that L kein put the team through and I know you you were back playing at the time of three of days yes sir yeah what what is your thoughts about the fact that two a days are basically gone and no not much contact at all in Fall cam well it's Evolution of Spring Football it's it's like that in the NFL now they uh they don't want to hit anymore that's that's it's obvious I mean I understand that maybe back when we were played if we'd have done that maybe we have done better off but yeah we went three days a few times uh but majority of it was two days and and you hit no matter what you know the three days one time was more mostly a walk through uh the way college football is nowadays they they when you start paying players like they're doing now and you got a A star guy that's getting good money and and he ends up getting hurt well you know you're paying him and he ain't playing and so they need to tone down you know even you know Pros do it in college ball they tone it down to a point where not much hitting much tackling it's just you should know what you need to be done and that's what they doing in Spring football nowadays is make sure you know everything getting ready for fall we didn't have that we had it where we were putting everything we don't have OTAs you know the May June and July that's basically you're free in college football and once spring balls over you do nothing until you you start up in in August whereas nowadays I think that the college teams are getting like the pro teams when he gets the spring football it's kind of like the OTAs you go through everything no hitting no tackling a little bit some teams stop with the spring football games or if they did it they minimiz minimize it enough where you know no no hit the quarterback easy on the running backs it's C like the the the the Pro Bowl let's just touch everybody and the plays over with but I can understand that it's a different times and there's a lot of football games being played so that's why body want to tone it down thanks again for making the lock onus podcast your first listen every day when we come back we are going to talk to the quarterback about the story so we are going to start looking at Jackson Dart and I I went to look over the stats for Jackson and just a normal chalk year let's say that the odds going into the game just go straight chalk Jackson Dart has a chance to leave Old Miss as the winningest quarterback in the history of Old Miss with about 90 to 95% of every quarterbacking record so the story for Jacks Dart this year is just don't wreck the Ferrari right yeah but also the guy who sold him Lane Kiffin's Strategy for Dart to the Ferrari his name is Lane kein if he don't screw up Dart then you're G to have a fantastic season and what I mean by that is you know don't expect the young man to do everything for you you got a good enough offense you got receivers you got a running game you got a o line you know be careful with dart you know he's there he's a throwing quarterback and he can run every now and then that's perfectly fight but don't put him in a situation where you know you're you as a head coach oh I'm hoping this goes I'm going to do it this way that's not what it is you have an o line you got a running game you got receiver you got other people don't put all that pressure on Dart dart's good enough to get you through this whole year get you through the playoffs he's that good enough of a quarterback but he's only good enough if he's on the field playing and he's playing under control knowing that okay I'm not the guy that's got to win it or you know I'm not the guy that's got to lose the game so let's just make it where he understands what he has to do go out if he executes that's fine and Lane kein let your offense play if it doesn't have a chance don't go for it on Fourth and four fourth and five at your own 10 to 12 yard line don't be stupid don't put your defense in situation because you think you have a great defense now you don't know that you know play defense play offense like it's supposed to be punt the football let your defense do the job maybe they'll get a turnover down the field for I like Dart situation I like old Miss's team situation on the offensive side of the football I just like their personnel it it all depends on what Lane kein does to this football team and we've all known what happens in the past what has happened in the past where he takes too many chances and he goes outside the box and all this analytic stuff you better throw that put that bury that stuff right now go on the practice field dig a hole with your analytics put the guy in there if you want whoever's in your ear telling that that's how you stop it stupidness I I I I'm 100% agreeing with you on all of this um but you did mention Lane kein and this is the year first year of helmet technology to where they can communicate directly in the ear of the quarterback and it looks like Charlie Weiss is going to be the person that's actually doing the communicating what type of Advantage can miss potentially get through this Football Strategy technology well it's it's a simple situation I like the fact that once you call a play and you need to shut up from an offensive coaching point when a guy calls a play don't get in his ear and tell him to look for this do this do that now you've already done screwed it all up because the guy knows if he's if he's prepared he's ready to roll you call a play let him go do it you know you can hint a little bit but don't talk to him all the way till you if you got 20 seconds don't give him the play in 10 seconds and then talk to him for 10 more seconds call the play get it over if you got something to say say it really quick hey you know there's a possibility they're going to do this that's it you know leave him alone I like the the idea that because it's so difficult with the singling and this and that and it'll take away from all that stupid stuff on the sideline with you know you got you know George Clooney pitcher you got a mount Rock Rush pitcher you got stupid you got Snoopy in there's a p you got stupid stuff on the sideline that's not that's ridiculous call a play in his ear get it little it and go play so basically what you're saying is the the best way for Old Miss to do this would be Charlie wise he spits out the play and does whatever he needs to do it's a passing play and as they walk up and the defense take shape it's like hey Trey Harris one-onone well no because they cut the clock off when I mean the timing when when you call the guy out they can't still talk to him when he's when he's in the play you got a certain amount of time when they when the when the when the plays when the balls in play you could talk to the quarterback and then he'll cut you off if it's a it might be a 15sec or a 20 second that's any time you can you can get now when you're in the Huddle before that he's got his here and he's hearing the quarterback coach telling what the players that's when a quarterback coach say okay it's play you know like right zebra motion you know 452 X go all right then you might say okay well watch the other receiver and see if they one on one you might want to go that way that's just the point that's it but you got to get it done in the time frame that your helmet is alive for you to speak you can't talk the whole time he's in the Huddle when he walk walks up the line of SC that that's it you got to cut it off they will cut it off um before we get out of here what do you think has your eye this after this fall Camp going into the season my eye Coaching Advice for Lane Kiffin is set in the fact that he went out and got some players he's got some players that had played before uh both sides of the football he's got a stack team and the only reason I can see these guys going downhill has to be from the coaching part uh if you got the players and you know you got the players you need need to control them the whole time and realize that the season begins this weekend excuse me next weekend and then you have the team that you think can be all you want to do is get in the top 12 you don't care if great if you win the SEC but if you don't win the SEC you still got the opportunity to be one of the 12 teams to get in there so coach him up and let him go play and where do you do your radio show John oh this way I'm over at Francis Franciscus up in uh Lake View area in New Orleans we move around each day to different restaurants or different places that that want us so Boomtown Casino was yesterday and today is going to be Francisco's Restaurant and how can they listen to it uh you have to go online and it's uh you know it's ESPN FM 103.3 that's basically it it's you got to stream it that way and that's the best way we can do it thanks we got a lot of changes coming up on there right now steveen my co-host is going to move over to the Pelicans Harding so uh we're going to have some adjustments coming up here no different than it's just going to have a different co-host with me yeah and and and you guys in are in the middle of like getting ready for Saints ramp up and all of that what what's the big St Saints story right now well the big story is what are they gonna do offensively uh is cuak and Carr gonna be on the same page it's basically who's going to protect them it's the big old line problem they got a big issue with the offensive line a lot of guys are hurt right now but if they can find somebody protect Carr they got the Big Story in Football capability because the defense is really that good the Saints can easily squeeze into a playoff if the offense shows up is is Rattler ahead of Hanner or is Hanner the two no no Rattler should be the number two guy he's he's much better than Hanner but you know it's everybody's want rattle to jump up and be place of card that ain't gonna happen there's both these backup quarterbacks are years away from playing in the NFL car is the answer you got to protect Carr you got to get the offensive line and Alvin Camaro's got to be the running back that we know he can be Rattler needs to be probably on the Steve McNair plan in my opinion yeah Rattler's about if I had to say so he's two years away from taking over if he's the quarterback he's got everything going for him right now if you can stay healthy learn this year maybe learn next year because last year under the contract after next season and then you know go with r om Miss Legend John 4K joining the show today thank you very much Mr Forcade and we'll talk to you later bud all right Stephen thank you have a good day
