[Applause] it's a world of natural beauty that rarely lasts long glacial Ice Caves like this network in the crater of Washington's Mount St Helens is a World Christian Stenner has come to know well so we're seeing this uh problem where people want to visit these places before they disappear and before they don't exist anymore but there's a you know tremendous Hazard that can go along with that those risks suddenly realized this week in Iceland when an ice cave collapsed crushing one American Tourist and hospitalizing another ice caving in summer is is something that we're seeing something new coming in and and it does raise questions within the mountain guiding community in Iceland and in Canada too while it's rare to see summer tours of Glacier caves in the Canadian Rockies some spaces can be easily accessed without the help of a guide I think uh there's definitely been um an increase of you know uh social media presence on some of these unique areas that are within the mountain landscape and folks visiting um these places uh maybe don't have the best understanding of what the overall risks are and the dangers are increasing as climate change causes glaciers around the world to disappear at accelerated rates as glaciers destabilize and melt their interior become Hollow and frankly that gorgeous blue people from all over the world they want to see it so as this Glacier melts it's going to attract more and more people and we're going to see more and more tragedy so I appreciate that people want to see those kind of places but there's definitely um a risk involved in in doing that it's why those that study these wonders are calling for more to be done through both regulation and education so these Majestic caves don't res in any more lives lost Heather urex West Global News Calgary
