what's up people another episode of the horns down podcast got my guy on here Chris Mason we are going to talk about the OU Temple game as a rapid reaction our post game pod right here we're going to do this for you guys and try to figure out exactly what this team is what we gathered from this game so I went to the game a lot of you probably went to the game some of you may have watched it on TV think Chris Mason definitely watching on TV so we're gonna get Best of Both Worlds and get perspectives from from from what he saw on TV seeing the entire field to what I saw sitting in the end zone so with that being said we are going to do that right after the intro you know there's a lot of great OU podcast but there's only one the horns are always down ladies and gentlemen this is the horns down podcast again people this is the horns down podcast you already know as soon as the students get through playing you know that we're gonna be here normally I'm with Jason but tonight I'm doing a special pod with my guy Chris Mason of sunis 360 all of his info is in the bio of this video but regardless let's let the man tell you guys where you can find all his wonderful content so the easiest way to find it all is to follow me on Twitter cmore Sooners 360 or you can find my content on YouTube by searching for Sooners 360 or you can on your podcast platform of choice audio um just find just look for the Sooners 360 recruiting podcast so yeah with that being said with that being said definitely go and like subscribe do all those different things Sooner Legends I literally just opened up Twitter and saw your message so I'm sorry uh if you want to jump on you can let me know uh but we'll definitely get a video in so I apologize for a dropping a ball on that I think he asked me to do a do a live so I literally just like opened that and like yeah so I'm going through a lot of emotions right now um Stephen G with the with the with the good good good right here uh we have a lot to discuss The Good the Bad and the Ugly so let's just go straight to it let's get to the juggler people I'm not one that pulls shots I'm not one that sits here and try to miss words let's talk about the ugly which is the o line right well not not just the o line but the o line definitely is GNA be the biggest point of of of conversation but yes there there's some other ugly there's some other ugliness in there as well there's some other ugliness but that that okay okay okay okay The Good the Bad and the Ugly okay you're right the good we know what the good is and there's there's still some things on that side that you want to see be better um the the the the bad is first off let's just point it out Jackson Gotta Get Down okay gotta get down don't take hits like that no you want to lower your shoulder or whatever it's Temple first game of the season don't do that we got bigger fish to right um kind of a mix of the bad and ugly this just really at a high level people um I am a fan of lat Trail but the offense seemed pretty lethargic tonight it did not seem a a yes it was it was less than thrill it was less than thrill um out of think not and sputtering would be the word I might another adjective I would throw out there some weird some weird some weird play calls but you you always have that you always you know armchair quarterback armchair offensive coordinator that a little bit but um yeah it was it was it was an inconsistent performance um from the offense um overall but I think there are some glimmers of um there's some good stuff to pull out of of it um but you know to the Switzer's famous aphorism is you know you're never as bad or as good as you look at your first football game right so maybe maybe we're not as good as we look on defense and maybe we're not as bad as we looked at times on on offense so I mean le le let's let's get let's get right to it let's get right to it man I mean let's just talk o line and and people please feel free to comment chime in because I want to see all your comments and see exactly what all you guys have to say but let's talk about the let's unpack this offensive line there's no push I feel as though fabii is I'm fine with him I'm I'm fine with fichi but I feel like when Branson Hickman went out there was really no continuity Hatchet did not really feel like he was physical enough to play that position kind of felt like we were already back with rain right um the left side I'm sorry but Taron has to go like I I can't watch tarland anymore I'm sorry I one game was enough for me you have to to me I think you need to push Shon back out there and you got to figure that out I know my uncle my uncle was with me at the game and we were watching that was something that he was definitely saying he was like Hey Tarin has to go Tarin can't you can't play him at that left tackle this is Temple he's looking like this you should kick seon out to tackle again and and bring somebody who can actually play that you may have to rip the bandid off and I feel like eppl Brooks um um um gosh I mean you know yeah I mean so all right so as as bad as you thought tarquin was yeah from the TV perspective Spencer Brown was worse yes no definitely I mean so um can we send Brown well I mean let's let's I mean obviously Brown's your third string is your third string right tackle right that's clearly that's it's clearly his position he's your third string right tackle you don't want to start you you Jake Taylor's First Team Tarin is your second and brown is your third right so yeah most teams you know I hate you know this is not an excuse but this is just a fact most teams third team offensive tackle if you is is bad it's not good right that's a reason why they're third team you know utri Dent didn't dress out Daniel and Kimmy's coming back from you know an injury this is where you know this is with gon going pro early um and not signing enough offensive lineman in 21 and22 yeah and with the injuries we have this is this is where this all comes back back to bite you so it did get a little bit I I think catchet did a little bit better than you than you think but obviously what we need to happen is we need um we you know can Hickman because I think I'm afraid this Hickman ankle thing is going to be like a lingering thing right High spray yeah that's the concern right there um you've got to get a guard ready to move seon to T to tackle I don't disagree with that that you need to bring a need to we need to have another you need to move SE in the left tackle and you need Jake Taylor to be healthy at right tackle then you need to figure out from there that that sets it that sort of sets everything up a little bit and then but you've got to find another guard to make that happen so it's either ozetta eepl I think Brooks is probably behind both of those guys at this point yeah uh at least that's what that's the way it seems he did dress out though and you know and Howland you got to get you've got to accelerate howland's development to be that fourth tackle so you're not putting Spencer Spencer Brown out there now if you can get if you can healthwise get to that position and and those guys can consistently I mean you know you're you you you're what like on your second series of the game you made 40 line changes that's that's that's crazy that's crazy so you know there's no consistency obviously they've been they've been guys have been in and out of the lineup the last two weeks that's what we've been hearing we haven't heard specifics on any injuries yeah I think at some point they're just not doing themselves any favor by by saying that it would be it would be better to know what's going on um you know so that so yeah there was limited push um Jackson was getting hit too much on pass plays they were also doing some weird thing there's something from TV um Chris the snap count and the push looked off like it didn't look in it didn't look in sync like it was almost like the o line was waiting for the snap there was a couple of there was a couple of uh snaps couple of drives where that that that did kind of it looked weird it looked weird it looked weird it wasn't as consistent let me let me let me look at these comments real quick first off uh stanj Ross if you're still here bro look we're we're not we're not sitting here about to have a complain Fest no we just won my 48 points like I'm not mad at this team I think this team is going to be really good but we're talking about we're being realistic We're Not Gonna Sunshine pump you and come on here and say hey 151 to three yay we did great no there are things that this team has to improve for us to to kind of go to where we want to go and we're gonna talk about that first before we get to the good which we talk about the Run game we can talk about the plethora of backs the talent you saw um the fact that we were able to do a lot of different things um out there uh knowing that we're playing a lot of twos and not necessarily our ones outside of uh Farooq and and and uh and burs right so far about that and faroo was gone after that one big pass play so yeah yeah so Arnold I mean in terms of judging Arnold I mean we've talked about the o line I I don't think there's much more to talk until we see I mean it's going to be a struggle unless we can get healthy and put five guy and put and have sex and tailor it tackle right and then two two guards well like the uh the Nate dog he said seon eepl Hickman uh fabich and then uh Taylor he said in his opinion so I I'm I'm not mad at that if that was you get there if you can get there yeah but EPL it's it's he's not there yet um so but yeah I think you know it's it's it's a question of how long does it take to to get healthy so that we have that have that lineup so well not not only that but people still remember that I mean we can see a different offensive line whenever the game starts uh against Houston right because beaten B is going to Tinker with this offensive line but it has to get better you you have to you start to open up some holes late you started doing some different things I forgot who it was but somebody had a um a really really good yeah it was h Sean riddle or Riddell however you say it um Center going down made it tough to run up the gut but we did run a well out on the outside and that that was that was actually really good that was kind of the strength of this team it felt offensively and and I'll let you go into um um I'll let you go into you know your Jackson orfield but I would say this right here about Latrell at least uh it it felt like he was he was teasing the the the Playbook it felt like obviously he was keeping in vanilla we already know this was a very vanilla offense they just ran probably a script the entire game nothing that was crazy nothing that that was any that was elaborate like you would you would think that you would see right so we already know that we know that we're probably going to keep it vanilla as as as much as possible these next two games right until Tennessee but it it just felt like at times it just was just really just basic offense and and and we weren't necessarily great at running basic offense basic shell offense the entire time yeah I mean I think so getting beyond the o line obviously Farooq being hurt hurt big time because you only had I mean Arnold really only had Burke Burks out there as a reliable wide receiver yeah I mean Brennan Thompson was struggling you know Hester had a hand ectomy apparently um I mean I mean there I mean if Jaden Gibson or Anderson is out there I mean there's two more touchdowns on the board and two big two huge passing plays right I mean that deep ball that Hester dropped Gibson or Anderson come down with and we know that because we saw them we saw them do that all the all last year um and then just but just not having them hurt greatly because you know Anthony's still getting himself back into game shape you know Burks is obviously you know a serious weapon he's he's deadly sharp looks better at tight end our tight end game looks much better we play two tight end a running back looks so much better you know we got some guys with some juice and that that looks it looks it looks improved it it seems like you have a a focus like in that running back room if feels like it it's more purposeful now like it's more there's more of an intent to actually establish the run or whatnot it just wasn't necessarily the push that I would like per se well I wish it actually given Barnes the ball more instead of some of the ant some some of the Arnold run stuff they were doing um and some of the past stuff I would wish they had maybe focus a little bit more of the run at different times so you know all in all you know the running back room looks improved the tight end room looks improved D and if we get back Anderson um and Farooq and we add them to Burks and a healthy andrel Anthony um and Brennan Thompson improved that's the first real stretch of rep of of game reps he's gotten I mean they were swapping people out left and right Reagan got in the game in the SEC in the first half so I I think and I think Arnold will look better when you know the more experence wide receivers are out there and I think it it made a big difference not having Anderson and faroo tonight I mean you know if you have them with Burks that's a lot more weapons for you know Temple to have to focus on uh obviously special teams looked a lot better tonight uh that was uh you know the Doug deacons from San Diego State at least gets a gets a gray a for game one um Kelner looked good kicking the ball uh special teams was was you know harder with forc to Fumble there was there was no question really about special teams so that was all that was all really good um again I think there's a you know you know we we I've seen U I've seen worse U offensive line game ones and this I hate to say that but guys roll back the roll back the machine for 2009 or 2005 and and you will have seen a much worse day uh than what we saw tonight there's a lot of skill Talent on the team um if you can get the oine situation healthy then we can judge what what we actually have but it just felt like it just felt like that it was just really inconsistent the the entire night granted you were able to put up a lot of points and you were doing a lot of really good things but I mean at times pass Pro was great at times the uh the the Run game to pick up those those you know those fourth and ones those uh you know three third and twos and and stuff like that it felt like okay we're treading in the right direction but it it just never really it it just wasn't clicking and brown was getting and brown on pass Pro was getting abused he was not doing a good job in the Run game as well I mean it's it's clear why he is the third or fourth he's probably the fifth offensive tackle on the roster as soon as Howland gets a little more seasoning and that's there's a reason why he is he's and I felt like and that's a good point because it it it it it did feel like they I mean they were switching out a lot of people but it just felt like when there was continuity there was but when there wasn't it was they had to leave Brown in the game yeah till the end because they don't have we literally don't have a fourth right tackle Dent um Isaiah Dent Isaiah orre Dent didn't dress out and we don't have another we don't have another tackle we just literally they had to keep playing him because they don't have anybody else to put in there we have more interior guys you know um they didn't play Brooks they didn't have to play Brooks because they could play ozetta and eppl as uh at offensive guard um and Howland and then you had Bates uh gave it a shot at Center you know and did did okay um so yeah I mean it's once the offense once if we can get Jake Taylor and seon back at tackle I think you can figure out what you're doing at left guard and everything will and if Hickman or Hatchet can consistently be the guy and I think you may have to if Hickman keeps you know Hickman can't practice and this ankle thing is GNA have to just shut him down give Hatchet you know all the Reps in practice and let him start consistently to see what you've got or bit whichever one whoever's whoever's healthiest right and let them let them try establish some continuity at center with everybody and and go but yeah you know when hitman's down you know the second series and you literally make four o line position changes yeah the next couple of series looked didn't look very good on off heads it's like well yeah it's kind of that's kind of kind of why so um I I think you know we're where we are we're where we are because of injuries and not having enough offensive lineman sign that's why we need to mean you know uh I there was times tonight Chris I was wondering if Michael fusi could get could get an instant eligibility waiver right yeah can we get him in from Lewisville tonight help is on the way it just it I guess the reason why I I the angle that I'm coming from is that you know being there at the game Watch Temple uh you know uh not just necessarily run out but warm up as well I was there I've been at the at the stadium since probably about four o'clock uh today so I was watching them work out and everything I was like man they they're they're small they're not necessarily that athletic but you just you felt like you should just be imposing your will right so that's kind of what you wanted to see well they were they were they were you know they were blitzing they were run blitzing a lot they were definitely focused on stopping the running game yeah and and and and and focused on you know yeah for blitzing blitzing Jackson they weren't they weren't they wanted the quick death not the slow death right and we could and we didn't and we weren't able to execute to hit them with the with the with the quick death we at time but it's it's again it's you're never as bad as you look in your first game or as good as you look in your first game so there's a lot to work on offensively yeah if I'm Bill I'm like okay I have got to get one of the young guards to step up well or hatch it to step up if I can get Hickman and Bates healthy I've got to have a better idea of my health of the offensive line moving forward for the next game well let's get let's get off the offensive line let's let's talk about Jackson tonight okay obviously I think you're re receiver wise we know what that what that game was and I think we we're confident in those guys and I think that when given given their roles whenever they're able to play their roles I think you will see Brennan Thompson and those guys be able to stretch the field but I mean this is great Reps for them as well to to get them situated get them established um uh for for now that way um deeper in the season or whatnot when they come out there you know there's not a drop off when they're subbing in um for me uh I I I I would give Jackson I would give Jackson probably a B minus tonight if I was grading him and I I think that I think I'm being fair I could say a c but I would probably give him a B minus um 141 yards four touchdowns that's still really good but I think you you could have had some had more but I mean given you know the the fact that we were just really going vanilla I'm not necessarily going to hold that against him um good security though that that that ball was not he was not throwing that ball In Harm's Way no I was just about to say that I was like good ball security uh uh good good reads good decisions um for most of the night or whatnot I felt like Jackson was fine I didn't really have a problem with Jackson I feel like the Arizona game is behind him now we don't have to necessarily discuss that anymore um from the spring game I like what I saw and then now I like what I see as well he's hitting guys on time I do think that that that that one throw where they ran I I always call it the Stoops play because you know Stoops is uh they they put uh stoop they would put Stoops inside uh obviously at the slot and he would basically run that little corner route kind of that little like curb Corner how how he like he was just bended right and so they ran that with uh uh with Burks tonight and that was probably the only really bad throw that I saw from Jackson to be honest with you it was his accuracy was good um I I feel like his decision making for the most part was good uh he was obviously let down on a couple of De you know I mean his day's a little bit different if JJ Hester catches that ball and runs 30 yards like he should right yeah um you know he runs 30 yards or if Hester caught the Deep ball it's it's it's different the passing game looks a little more explosive uh again I thought he was hurt by not having Farooq out there to go with Burks um and you know it was a little it was you know he he hit bar sharp hit him a couple of times um you know he was under pressure you know as think as you know as um it's being mentioned he was under pressure quite a bit I mean Brown got pushed into his back a couple pushed into him basically a couple of times the pocket you know on that side you know collapsed a couple of times and they blitzed up the middle no one picked up some late blitzers so I mean it was I thought it was a good effort from him um I you know I think there's some play calling funkiness as well um maybe they're holding stuff back um but overall I felt like you know for him you know let's remember it was a short field he was he was kept getting a short field all night too right so um for the most part The Yards the the yardage is I think less important than the fact no turnovers he was very efficient in the red zone for the most part other than the one Series where they had the penalty and got push back um he he looked in I mean for for whatever they were running small portion of the offense they were running he looked like he was in command of it and he made when he when he had to make quick decisions when he was being hurried or whatever the case may be for the most part he made good decisions uh with the ball so you you felt good about it uh want him I don't love the I don't love the fourth and one belozer with Arnold that with Arnold that I didn't like it in the Playbook last year don't like it in the Playbook this year um but overall I feel like you know he showed his Mobility he showed his ability to make plays make something out of nothing and uh you know I think for I probably give him closer I'd probably give him a b um factoring in the you know he he's missing he's missing is he's missing these guys at wide receiver and you know Thompson you know didn't turn upfield to avoid that fourth and one that they they did pick up but you know Thompson should have just you know some you know don't keep keep stop running left and stop running East and West go north and south every once in a while get it the first down uh it just you know it just felt like he had Burks and I think they kind of they you know eventually Temple kind of realized you know hey Burks is his guy maybe we should really give him you know roll over some more coverage to him so I just felt like with all that um you know he's gonna it's it's first game you know live action I'd give him I'd give him a b I'd give the running backs room um I'd give the running back rooms for a B+ wide receiver other than Burks I would give probably a c um tight end I would probably give a you know B+ solid B+ uh KY n kicker I'd give him an a I mean he's hit three of them hit the 52 yard or look good so you know that's that's where I would view what's what's going what's going on Houston will be a better team better competition better athletes U needs to play better in game two they did in game one it's just that simple and hopefully they held Jake Taylor and Anderson out for this games to have them ready to play Houston I think you add those two pie you add those two starters back in the into the mix and I think things things look a lot things look a lot better um you know from that from from that perspective I think on offense if you get Jake Taylor and you can play sex in a tackle you get your two starting tackles who you want to be um you see this you see I'm sorry to cut you up you see this news here seems like BV just dropped some stuff in in the pressor saying that Jalil will have surgery he's out six to eight weeks well that's that's he can't seem to gain can't seem to catch a break and we're our deep wide receiver room is is becoming shallower every minute um yeah I mean I think you you're G to have to have somebody step up I I don't know who that is it doesn't look like it's going to be J J Hester so it probably needs to be Kon well it needs to be I think you need to get K carry on and Kerney some more reps we need to see what pedway and um and Thompson can can bring so um I I I I think you should be okay I'm hopeful hopefully everything goes right with Farooq that way he can get back well six to ankles six to eight weeks that's I mean I hate to say that's that's that's his season really yeah that's the season that's that's the season so if you know if we get gotta get Andrew Anthony back in the mix and gotta get Anderson back uh you know you can't be down for wide receiver weapons no one can absorb that kind of head not even you I mean how how excited we were about about them definitely can't do that but we we'll see we'll see it was it was I mean if you if you from an ambulance standpoint it's it's an F day right yeah I mean you know from an injury standpoint it's an F day offensive line injuries weren't great going in and then Hickman got hurt if if Farooq is hurt and B said at that at the press conference obviously they they scanned him and obviously he's broken his ankle or done something to his ankle he's out eight weeks he's basically out for the season you're not going to get him back until you know what is it August 31st you know for for a wide receiver cutting left and right that just I don't see how he's really back and he's been having some problems with with with his foot right I believe so that's what the injury was the first time yeah his other injury so that's that's a that's a bad combo so um yeah I mean we've got you know we've got some Talent young Talent at wide receiver it's it's time to you know pull Ivan Cary and Z ker into a room guys you thought you were sitting behind Gibson and uh Farooq and Anderson well you may not be we we need you guys to go so it's time to BU stock in those guys and get them ready so let's let's let's jump back because we we we um before we move on to the defense because I definitely want to talk about the running back room because we didn't give that any light um running backs I I I thought it was a really really solid day for the for the running backs didn't see that much of Sawchuk you felt like they were saving him anyways but between bnes and Tatum man bnes bornes looked really good out there today BN looked like he did he did he looked like he got his vision back um he he was seeing things out there he made really good he made some good Cuts he made he made there was one one run stretch run that he had really good really good found the hole found exactly where he needed to go was really i' would like to seen some more runs from him when they were struggling a little bit and yeah obviously Taylor Tatum okay he's a number one running back in out of high school for a reason he and he just showed it game one you know um to steal to steal another uh steal another analogy from a long time sooner sooner fan friend of mine he always says about running backs basically running backs specifically he says if your if your dog's gonna bite it bites as a puppy and that's how he says that's how he refers to running backs it's like if a running back's gonna be good they will flash early you will see it early right and and for the most part we've seen that um for non-injury running backs you know in ouru history right DeMarco his red shirt freshman year ad Quinton Rodney Mixon pery um you know the list goes on and on right I mean any time you know even um Trey Surman as a freshman was really really good so I think overall the running back room looks improved tight end room looks improved but yeah I I thought the running backs was positive you know that that option pitch play for the last touch down was pretty sweet um so you know that was a pretty sweet play you know even Mike Hawkins obviously with the limited set of of the Playbook that he's got you know he's got some he's got some Flash and Dash to him as well so that was it was positive to to to see that that you know especially with you know our third team second team third team offensive line that he was working behind uh it was you know that nice that touchdown drive you know templea was obviously tired but you know we had our we had our backups all we had you know we went as deep as we could on the offensive depth chart and it was uh and it was uh and I put that drive away was was nice to see Tatum doing that a little Flash and Dash yeah I mean it's it's you know some two back you know definitely got some that that right there when I saw that I said oh I said if we go some TW I said we going twinsies I said if we doing twinsies I'm fine with that I say hey trust me I want to go two tight end sets formations but we we can get back to that to where we can have two running backs out there and have some splits and some and some twinsies I I'm I'm perfectly fine with that with one last thing before we move to the defense from my from my viewpoint Chris and I we hadn't mentioned this before but on TV probably was obvious obviously in the state must have been obviously in the stadium but we we slowed down we we realized we had our defense had this football game from the very beginning yeah there was no reason for us to go no huddle and do any of that right we were very we ran clock and we ran clock and were very deliberate in terms of spping personnel out and you know and working the play coock I mean but that's that's why I said earlier I was like it felt like he was just kind of teasing A playbook because at times in the game it felt like felt like latr was was doing two things and people trust me if you've ever played any type of ball basketball football H tennis whatever right um any type of well any team sport excuse me you all know coaches coaches one they love to put you in in certain scenarios just to see how you react how you play right right um and and then two it it just felt like he was just trying things right it it just felt like he was trying to find that right combination who was jelling you know together and who was kind of doing what they needed to do to be on the field so I felt like felt like Latrell that that's one thing I'll kind of give him for this game as far especially as a like as a pass instead of being really critical or or complaining like Stan J Ross was saying right um I just felt like latr was just kind of trying things at some point especially when they when they just really felt like I mean defensively I mean we're we're we're just they can't score on us yeah I mean and but like I said I thought it was very apparent that he was he was not they weren't rushing to the line fine right they weren't doing and and a couple of times they did we had a couple of the temple injuries it was kind of hysterical the one or two times that we tried to rush tried to go no huddle um we just had the temple I'm hurt um so I I think but overall he was running clock right he's like we got a dominating defense I don't need to hurry here right time's my friend you can't score on me time taking time off the clock is my friend I don't need to I don't need to call things it wasn't wasn't anywhere near as fast as yeah it wasn't yeah it wasn't it was not they were they were the play clock was going down to you know 15 14 seconds a play whereas with leby we we used to it you know lineup snap with like 25 30 seconds on it no and I I agree like it I I said that in my mind at one point during the game I was just like it kind of feel I say it's just it's different I'm have to get used to this because um and you know and shout out to for his time at OU give I give him that but it definitely it felt weird it felt good it felt it felt like a lot of different things at the same time because you're sitting there knowing okay oh well even though I i' like to turn the tempo up and and all the rest of this stuff I don't necessarily mind just kind of running clock and just running offense right and and running it at our Pace opposed to us going out there and going you know three and out in 50 seconds right so you just kind of I mean you felt you felt good I mean one one thing that I'll say about this Latrell offense I did appreciate even even keeping the vanilla right you still saw a lot of formations you still saw a lot of different for formations man so two tight ends we we actually playing two tight ends again we're less predictable yeah less predictable formation wise than we were last than we were we have the last years yeah and and and that's so true because and and that's what I was thinking as well is like we're going to be a hard team to prepare for especially if things start to click for the offensive line and the offense as a whole we're going to be a difficult team to prepare for because you really don't know what look like I've said people as multiple as you could be on defense this offense could be just as multiple because latr will latr from drive to drive it doesn't happen game to game it's from drive to drive you're GNA you have different looks out there different formations different bodies all the rest of this stuff what he inherited coming in as the OC he's got a lot to do with and we've seen him do more with less so I'm excited about that let's move on to the defensive side of the ball um where do you start I mean where do you want what you want to talk about like where you want to start I mean I mean how do you come up with a defensive MVP is that Bowman Grayson Halton Halton that was going to be mine I mean Halton had a Robert Spears Robert Spears Jennings yeah um you know it was it was it was funny Chris that such a dominant performance with a fairly quiet game from Danny stutsman oh say that again I'm sorry sorry it was a dominant defensive performance right um we do have to give props jfa for his Pooch punt that was pretty prettyy awesome Pooch punt give him give him give him another letter grade half letter grade up bump for that I'm just saying that it was a very I mean it was a dominant defensive performance right I mean we could just say that be five four turnovers uh I mean I think eight sacks after Marcus Strong's two sacks at the end of the game yeah um you know that does maybe 10 tackles for loss something like seven or eight tend to tackles for loss and I'm saying it was such a dominant performance but it was a quiet game from Danny stutsman it was it it was it was and they play and Kobe Kobe looked great Kobe Kobe looked good when he stopped that when he stopped boying uh buddy uh in the middle that was I that's a man playing let him know too yeah so you know they played STS with Kobe they played STS with Kip they played Kip and Kobe I think they played Lewis Carter and Kobe they play uh they played stman with KCK as well they they yeah they did you're right they they emptied the bench yeah on defense I mean Jaden Jackson had like four or five plays where he didn't make the play but he just disrupted everything completely yeah I mean he he came he came I mean he came flying through the middle and it's like he I mean you know the guy he didn't get the running back the running back you know they he just blew up the play I mean Dominic Williams was dominant Jason Jason Terry looked good Grayson hton had his best game as a sooner I think today um the defensive ends uh Aron Thomas was getting getting a good push um do do you feel are are you okay with the with the defensive ends or are are they they got overshadowed by the T the play of the tackles tonight definitely um there's more on there's more there's more on the bone there but I think armeson Thomas he was he was he was getting closer to the quarterback than I remember last year than than than other defensive end were hey people look try Ford was out there as well and Trace Ford was was was rounding that he was playing he was playing that playing well you know Downs had kind of a quiet game other than he forced to Fumble right you have a f a fumble he punched it out he got um AR Thomas got caught on an end round once um but overall I mean you were playing everybody I mean everybody was out there I mean they played there everybody was out there yeah I can't imagine PJ got a lot of snaps too PJ played a lot it was you know you uh Ashton Sanders was out there and he was he was moving around you defensively in the secondary you know kai Walker appeared to have a great game from what I could see on TV Dolby was everywhere kind of a do you remember um Brandon Shelby yes I mean dolby's like a bigger more athle Brandon Shelby and just flies around he's G to be a problem for for for a lot of program for a lot of offenses we play what the craziest part about it is is that he's doing people if you go and watch his his uh tapes his highlight tapes at Neo the the same thing he's doing right here he's he doing there and the crazy thing he was playing safety and people when I tell you that um right now you're getting to see his all him being a complete player a allaround um um uh DB because you're seeing the tackling you're seeing the blitzing you're seeing all the rest of that stuff don't take it lightly when you see him on there and they when they when they're announcing the starters and they say he's a linebacker he is every bit of a cheetah he's every bit of a nickel that guy right there um um it's a little on a little onte Jones like to go way back in the machine yeah he he's playing he is playing how should I say this he is playing to me what is just natur natural to him he's not even necessarily playing a position that he may even comp out at at the pro level he's just playing what's really natural to him which is what he did at Neo while he was there this is and and please correct me if I'm wrong if you disagree please disagree but this some of the best nickel play I've seen since like Nick Harris and Niel I know we say cheetah I'm calling him a nickel because more like a nickel yeah yeah I mean he was he played great tonight I mean it was a he was he forced the interception he got a two tackles for a loss and I think a sack maybe yeah he was he was everywhere I mean he he he he helped and run support you know it was he was good you know Bowman and Bowen and Bowman were excellent Robert Spears Jennings was excellent boganowski got in at the very end and smack somebody around um said said Boi is going to kill someone he is he is but I'm not sure Robert Spears Jennings isn't going to do it first yeah I mean Robert was Robert was you know laying the wood out I mean you know to to be cliche he was laying the wood out there and they forced those turnovers it's not like know sometimes you get like a turnover and it's just like because the off offense just bungles around right you get a turnover because the offense is bungling around they they were forcing those turnovers I mean I mean mean they were smacking me the Lewis Carter hit on the on the punt return yeah of the canic TD I mean Lewis Carter snapped up and was like Hey I I put a big hit on some he didn't realize he'd actually forced he'd actually forced the fumble he was looking the wrong direction so and they played they played everyone um you know Hardy got an interception poers was out there they played heiki and Heim as well I mean it's you know um James Nesta who they're just I think they're explicitly redir the only guy I don't think they got out there we played every defense I mean Andrew henig the walk-on defensive tackle from Oak from he's an instate kid even was out there I was like who's who's that I'm like oh it's Andrew henck so they played everyone I mean Marcus strong who we've not heard a single word about all Camp you know got two sacks tonight so they the defense was dominant they they were in control they played they played everyone it was and you know it looks like we have a true kind of two deep defense back to the kind of defenses Brent had um before he left like the last truly great defensive performance I remember from U would have been um probably that FSU home game where they just we just shut them down Tony Jefferson um that was his coming out party um I don't think we played this complete kind of Defense in a while that's that I mean you know Chris usually you used to second team going in and it's like uhoh all right here comes here comes a couple of touch couple of touchdowns you know it's gonna break in the second team defense was in the game in the second quarter I mean uh it's the defensive talent and the and the fact that the scheme how well they know the scheme with the leadership you have it it looks like we may have a defense that could allow our offense some time to develop as opposed to being we gotta be we got to be scoring you know every possession every possession off the off the Hop because our defense is gonna is you can't do anything but our defense looks like it can stop people and they forced turnovers last year so they may be getting more turnovers this year because they know the scheme and they're just you know they're in better position and and all that obviously we'll face better passing quarterbacks I was surprised Temple didn't sub out their guy because they I thought they had a quarterback I thought they would do that especially talking to Ryan Wallen last week yeah he made it sound like it was a quarterback battle right yeah but they left that kid in there and he was he was Shell Shocked I mean I kept saying he's about to throw an interception he's about to throw an interception didn't he he you know um Dolby broke that pass up and Walker um made the made the pick and you know they were close in a couple other picks as well um so defensively you know maybe maybe this defense is going to be this good because they played so many young guys who are only G to get better as this season goes on um and we've got depth there looks like we have depth for the most part uh in terms of being able to obsorb maybe you know with this long season and this grind we have a defense that they can keep swapping players out so in October no early November our defense isn't just worn out completely and we're not down three starters with with you have with no play you have real comp I think I think this year you could this is the year or you can actually use that term or that phrase competitive death yeah I really do I I think on the defensive side of the ball did did Gentry Williams even play yeah he did he got out there a couple of snaps okay but he didn't play much right because it was mostly no they held him out the majority of the game but I think in that like second I want to say second quarter or so he was out there he played opposite of jacobe Johnson who I was I was happy to see get out there as well Vickers well Vickers is hurt okay yeah yeah now how he's hurt is a really great question but I he's obviously injured he was in a jersey um saw I saw him the the booth you know they do the the ESPN plus SEC now on SEC plus obviously they do the um the broadcast Booth so you can watch the pregame from um from their angle so we got to see you got to see everybody working out and all that so it was that's why I saw I saw autrey Dent was not dressed out at tackle I was like o that's not good um which he was dressed out at tack they're trying to red shirt him obviously some guys are explicitly trying to red shirt um but I think at o line I'm not sure they can really afford the red shirt to much of anybody at this point so yeah no I mean it's kind of like a open contest but I mean and and at the end of the day I mean in hindsight I kind of feel like a lot of spots are still up for grabs you know I still feel like there you know we're not going to circle that wagon for maybe I think the running back position is going to be competitive all year long yeah I mean if the you know U it was funny because you know Tatum got on the game much earlier than I anticipated I was like wow okay he's in he's in already um it was kind of surprising makes me wonder if is is is Hicks in some kind of mini dogghouse I mean that is true because you did not see him tonight which is nope he didn't play it is he is he hurt and we just don't know I that's the other thing I can't wait for can't wait for the uh injury reports in SEC play right so we actually have some semblance of knowing you know it's not no longer this guessing game of you know who's hurt who's out and all that well they at least know you know okay that guy's actually hurt he's not you know as I just said you know I don't know Hicks could be perfectly fine he just didn't get in the rotation tonight for some whatever reason but yeah it's it's it's odd that he didn't play considering Sam Franklin played and Tatum played so um it a little a little a little odd but I I you know back to the defense it was the secondary looked good coverage looked good medium you know um the linebackers linebackers seem to be the right linebackers seem to be in the right right position for the most part leis Carter on the big passing play lost his uh lost his guy for a second that was the only one that was the only one that it it was it was just kind of some of those east east west plays which I I I want us to be better at because I know some teams are going to try to give us eye candy like that right because they did run a little a couple of couple of sweeps to the outside where you were just like hey we we we we gotta be better at that but there there weren't too many to talk about there were only a few so yeah I mean if you you're you're really finding some room to complain if you have something to complain about the defense at this point right five turnovers three points basically off two plays and and you pushed them back as far as you could right you got back-to-back sacks to make it a fourth and 22 that they were hting from uh kicking from sorry so you did everything you could um you know defense gets an a as far as I'm concerned especially when you factoring the fact factoring the fact to uh to kind of butcher that phrase when you when you are adjusting to how many players got on the field and got experience tonight the defense has to get an A so Lester says he heard someone say that hicks is a little banged up all right okay well that's that makes sense um I'm not sure I would have given Taylor Tatum any any any chance to get you know you know the interesting point uh you know that what just popped in my mind about the running back room is this right here um you know it's fun because now they they will they will go to the hot hand they will continue to feed the hot hand but a lot of games that you watch Georgia hell they run about three or four backs in the game I mean that's that's consistent like they're running Milton and this guy that hell Milton comes in the third quarter and it's like what happened to the other two guys you know what I'm saying like they run they legit run about uh three to four running backs a game like you'll you'll see maybe three or four and then they Circle that wagon towards the end of the game where they're only going with two two of the four who are hot but you'll see them start with a bunch of bunch of uh of uh of running backs and I've seen them I've seen them go three three plays get a first down running the ball and they run another running back in there and they do the same thing the next the very next like three plays so no I mean I I think you're very very talented back there I think Jackson or does have weapons is just about he and the offensive line being being what we are all hoping that they be which is just nothing less than Phenom phenomenal right well and again there's gonna be a little bit of a ShakeOut period where they're trying to figure out what they do well and what they don't um but again we've got to get to the point where um you you you've got five reliable guys out there right in terms of health and then what they're going to do in terms of of execution you don't always need a five-star offensive line you know you just need Georgia Tech proved it they last week against FSU right they have a good offensive line they have a good scheme um they know what they're doing and they went and kicked that they kicked that uh FSU D line that was supposed to be great you know up and down Dublin's uh up and down Dublin Ireland last week so you've got to get but you I the number critical item is you've got to get an answer at right tackle that's not Spencer Brown whether that's yeah Jake Taylor Jake Taylor getting healthy um or you you you're able to move Shuffle some other things over with Jake ston taking over a Tackle Spot maybe tarquin is better at right tackle not quite as much of a liability or you move or you know it's you've got to figure out what you have in Logan Howland you know they wanted to they really I think they felt like they needed he need another year to develop BAS up on tonight I'm not sure we we we have that luxury same with Eddie Pierre Louie and Etta those guys got to start you know bill needs to walk into you know you know bill needs to walk into his office pull those kids aside and say it's game time guys you saw the first game I need you pushing to get into the starting lineup because that that's what I need I and that's what that's what uh give me a second um and that's what um um uh um people in the chat were saying it was like look this is just film man it's going to be really really good film I'm just reading this right here people if you haven't heard then um uh BV announced that the press or several people have put that in the chat that uh Julio Faro will probably be out about six to eight weeks um broken foot so uh speedy recovery recovery to him um hopefully everything works out so we can get him back towards the end of the season if not then hopefully he'll be able to get that medical red shirt that way we can um has he actually red shirted I don't think he's ever red shirted right because he played his unless he red shirted Raleigh that Raleigh year outside of that no he hasn't right I don't think he I don't think even if he did I mean I know he had a big bowl game with Caleb Williams um that final bowl game but before that I don't think he played he's gotta be he got to be eligible for a red shirt or or he would have already red shirted so yeah I just I you know I just don't that's a tough you know wide receiver wide receiver for him you know he's already gone through one surgery this is that you know Chris it's an expensive game one injury-wise yeah I mean for a game for a game you wanted to just the number one thing we kept hearing was well come out healthy well ambulance wise it's this game's an F we're getting people beat up a little bit too much I agree I definitely agree I know that's what my a and I were both saying um all in all I guess we can just kind of go at a high level to kind of close this out real quick as we've been on here for almost a damn near an hour um people it's time to get some sleep we got more football coming tomorrow we got some really big games Miami versus Florida uh Colorado State I got them being doing the impossible down there in uh in uh over there well then we got Clemson Georgia in my part Georgia at 12 Texas A&M Notre Dame we have some really good games people um but at a high level very high level I would just say man look I I um happy one and0 that's all that really matters at the end of the day do you have things to fix yes you got a bunch of things that you need to fix are they fixable I believe so because you have you have the pieces and the parts um Stephen G said hey Chris I know you were at the game what was the atmosphere like I didn't stay necessarily for the end of the third quarter to see that uh the TK song but I know they did play a um one little video montage that uh had Red Solo Cup on there so a lot of people were singing that in the stadium um the atmosphere for for for the most part was really good um some of those drives where we weren't able to like you know move the ball like we thought we should uh DUS when kind of the the the crowd died down but people were having fun people really jacked up especially every time we scored a touchdown um you know when you saw Jackson all doing really good and this and that and everything a lot of people really jacked up so people showed up and showed out um uh tonight it was it was a packed house um it was really good it felt really good being back I think the Friday night Vibes you know and that's something else the Friday night game it's just all weird right so let's let's let's recoup and let let's go towards Houston but like I said at a at a very high level man I thought that it was just a really I thought it was a good day I thought it was a really good day overall the weather held up you were able to play clean football um obviously like we said the injuries kind of bit us this week but I mean uh this game but I mean outside of that I think all in all you're happy with the effort out there but it's the execution so um you you definitely that's something that that has to be addressed this week in practice um because you know Willie Fritz is not necessarily going to have the talent to come in here and do the impossible and win it and win in Norman however he's going to have he's he's going to have the coaching aptitude the coaching skills to will that team to the point where they could come in here and make things a bit difficult for us early on in the game which automat obviously I think that we're going to cover the spread I think we're going to win but at the end of the day you still want to um you know put your best effort out there so we just we just need to more continuity and be more consistent because as this season goes on the games get tougher right the competition gets tougher but defensively defensively we we there we we we we here like so I mean please don't let it no turn no stone be Unturned on that defensively we them like we we are them like I'm not worried about the defense offensively I think that we are capable of being a an explosive offense it's just going to take time I yeah I mean defens everything we heard about fall Camp August Camp played out true right offensive line is injured and lacking continuity and the defense looks fantastic and that's that's exactly what we got and Jackson Arnold has improved at this decision making and looks more comfortable running the offense all those comments we heard all validated so now it's time as you said go back in the lab you know the other the other Switzer ism is that you never your biggest Improvement is from game one to game two so we need some of that uh some of that you know lab Lab magic for the offense to as you said they got a lot of film to get tuned up and to figure out to play a better game against a better play a much better game against a much better opponent in Houston and Norman yes sir yes sir yes sir that being said guys this been another episode of the horns down podcast Chris Mason go ahead and tell
