this question came in from Ben via subtext over about Port over there about Purdue hey Spencer always a fan appreciate it Ben you mentioned on one of your previous shows about Wisconsin being a trap game fact check true as well as recently that the Ducks should not underestimate Boise State I agree with you on both accounts however I also see the game against Purdue as a game that the Ducks need to be super careful going into here are my thoughts it is the week after Ohio State it is one of those Friday night package games short week we might be a little beat up also from what I've seen Purdue has a pretty decent defensive backfield and a pretty good quarterback in Hudson card thoughts so the Friday element terrifies me Friday games I I'm I talked about this when the Michigan State and Purdue games got moved Oregon gets an extra day of rest going into the Ohio State game but coming out of it it's a short week and they go to Purdue and some of you may or may not know depending on how much big 10 football you've watched over the years Purdue has had a propensity to pull an upset from time to time I remember a game in which an urban Meer coached Ohio State team with I think it was JT Barrett at quarterback might have been Dwayne H Haskins I I I forget which one went in there as a top five team and got absolutely blasted they they were run off the field don't underestimate the fans in West Lafayette Indiana they will show up and they like some upset potential it is a legitimate narrative in the Big 10 that well when you go to Purdue you best be careful and yeah you you best be careful so coming into this year this is what Purdue looks like at a glance they're tied for the lowest win total in the Big 10 at four and a half so Vegas does not think that they are going to be the best team and they might very well not be the best team they could be better than four and a half they might win five or six games but Vegas also thinks it's just as likely they win three or four games so make of that what you will also worth noting Arizona had a win total of 4 and a half last year they went n and three and they won their bowl game they were a 10- win team but win totals only factor in uh the the regular season they're going into their second year Under head coach Ryan Walters who had a rough go of it in uh his first year he was the defensive coordinator previously at Illinois and their defense last year kind of stunk 30 points per game allowed their offense was not super consistent they had some really good games offensively but Hudson card at quarterback who was the guy that filled in for Quinn yers after he got hurt at Texas and was kind of a somewhat highly sought after transfer he's gone to Purdue and last year he faded into oblivian in the college football world because well Purdue was 4-8 and they they didn't really make any noise and they didn't have a major upset over there and when they played the big boys Ohio State and Michigan they got outscored in those games 82 to20 not great Bob I don't actually remember what that's from I just I say that all the time so both their offense and defense struggled a year ago and when you have Ryan Walters as your head coach and he was really good he when he was the defense coordinator at Illinois he was really really good he helped uh I believe coach the guy that now plays for my beloved Seahawks in the NFL Devon wither spoon like Illinois has produced some legit defensive Talent over the last couple years Walters was you know a part of that and he's taken the head coaching opportunity at Purdue kind of on The Dan Lanning track he's 38 years old he's one of the youngest head coaches in all of college football this year's going to be his second year being a head coach ever it's going to be lanning's third so they're not that different in that sense Walters took over a program that saw Jeff Bram go to Louisville and don't know if he left the cupboards super stock behind whereas Landing took over a program that Mario crystal ball behind and there were a lot of good players already on the roster and you can get transfers to go to Oregon a lot easier than you can to to Purdue but you know the boiler makers have played in a big 10 championship game within the last 5 years I forget which season it was exactly it it was when Jeff braam was there he's a good coach and he's at Louisville now got them to the ACC title game a year ago go figure oh yeah it was two years ago pretty sure it was two years ago that uh that that Purdue was playing uh in in the Big 10 championship game uh I want to double check that real quick because I'm pretty sure that's right and uh you know it's a program that doesn't have a particularly high ceiling or uh or really high floor um yeah they uh they won their their conference they won the the Big 10 East or W whichever one was bad like and they got in and then they got blasted by by Michigan before they went to the playoff the uh the first time around but you know Hudson card last year 59% completion 15 touchdowns eight interceptions pretty underwhelming like I mean like those numbers on the surface pretty underwhelming and they lost their top receiving option to Oklahoma uh the guy's name is escaping me right now he's a stud he he is an absolute stud he's going to go to Oklahoma probably be Jackson Arnold's top Target as they go into the SEC so they've portal better than you would probably think and this is the encouraging thing if you're you know looking at this from the boiler maker perspective they have a top 30 recruiting class in 2024 after 4 and8 season and they have a top 30 transfer portal class they they've got 18 transfers coming in four of them are transferring over from Georgia Oregon fans might recognize a couple of the names that that were in there I know I did nylan Green was a four-star recruit out of high school fourstar transfer per 247 Sports he's a cornerback that came from Georgia yeah he was you know someone that I think I mentioned on the show a couple times as someone that Oregon could go after he'd been tied to the Ducks because of the The Landing Georgia connection he wound up at Purdue to go play in the secondary so in your question Ben you know hey I think they have some good players in the secondary yeah they brought guys in like NYL and green in the transfer portal offensively I don't know that he's a game changer but they brought in cam Brown wide receiver from UCLA always liked cam Brown always thought he was incredibly Sol you know he's a two or a three but every time I watched him play I thought man go pretty good football player so their transfer portal class that's got 18 kids in it and as I mentioned is one of the top 30 in the country I don't think they're going to be void of talent like on paper have I covered them extensively in locked on college football no because I don't expect them to be big 10 title Contender this season could I see him being a bow Team yeah I mean you got a somewhat veteran quarterback you got a second-year head coach you got some incoming talent and they were 4-8 last year they weren't you know 1 and 11 they weren't you know 2017 Oregon State 2022 Colorado or any one of those Kansas teams that went 1 and 11 they they didn't completely Bott him out they just they had it down year so you know there there aren't High Hopes in the Vegas betting Market but look that that could be a bll te like think about it like this team with a win total of four and a half pretty reasonable that you would you would see that team make a bowl game and go six and six I can think of a a team that was just barely bull eligible last year that Oregon went to on the road and almost lost the game that was Texas Tech now their situation is different they had quarterback injuries but still the statement stands you look back in you know how Texas Tech season went they lost at Wyoming granted a you know solid Mountain West team but still shouldn't have lost that game especially with a 17 nothing lead and you go wow Oregon was not playing its best football early in the season they were incredibly sloppy I think uh I was remembering that the day when when I was thinking about all this stuffff that Oregon you know in that game I think had over 100 penalty yards you know Kyrie Jackson had that just head scratching pass interference in which he didn't even look for the ball should have been an easy pick I think if he picks that ball off which he should or if it just goes incomplete Oregon might blow that game open and instead Texas Tech went down the field scored a touchdown and everything really really changed from from that point on but yeah I I think that Purdue game on a Friday night you know Oregon's going to have more Talent overall absolutely the question will be what is the emotional state of the Ducks off the Ohio State game because I can see it being a little bit of a trap either way because on the one hand if you beat Ohio State short week emotional let down on the road on the other side of the coin is you lose the Ohio State and you're physically beat up and then you could go out there and beat Purdue 48 to 17 that's I think what what that situation could could entail so I I don't think it's ridiculous to look at it and go boy that that that could be a game because it's on the road I almost think it's more dangerous because it's Friday Friday games are just they're just weird they're weird they're weird they're always weird I don't like them the Michigan State game Oregon's at home should be fine but Purdue not the least likely thing in the world do I expect Oregon to win yeah of course they'll be massive favorite in all likelihood but I don't know maybe maybe Ryan Walters has got some some tricks up his sleeve but that's what I found out about the boiler makers love that question I've got several more to answer on today's show we cover a smattering of
