we saw the head to head last meeting 2022 R gar they also played here in the US Open 2020 the year that's ver have made the finala was just 19 then lost in four sets ready let's see how their third meeting is going to play out one the toss and elected to serve nashima so the aim will be to make a fast start he goes in search for the first Grand Slam quarterfinal it would be for the American in terms of their games you know that actually quite similar in in terms of strengths weaknesses both very good servers Nakashima doesn't get spoken about enough for me in terms of how good his serve is but also you know both double-handed back hands are money that's a real strong shot from the Baseline both forehand can do damage but can also leak a few more errors where of in recent times has looked to come forward a little more than has earlier on in his career be interesting to see which player takes that initiative today and and and looks to get to the net more but I do think we'll see a lot of uh big serving a lot of big hitting from the baseline from both men o punishing exchange already this could get physical if that's rall anything to go by yeah good discipline Point here from Nakashima probably could have come to the net chose to stay back and that's the corner he likes to hit his forehand into that might Bo well today because it's going into the weaker side of the fourth seed [Music] game so nice settler for the youngster from the west coast of the US he's been one of those guys hasn't he since retiring he's been involved stayed involved in the sport [Applause] sanguinetti Sasha's here with his father as ever his brother was in the Box a few days ago as well for second around victory of Alexander Müller France STI made the round of 16 here 19 years ago 2005 I love reflecting back on some of the names from different eras first round win over Wayne Arthur as he then beat Carlos moer in the second round Mo was ranked 33 in the world at the time then he beat shishan in an epic five Setter remember paradon shishan what a player he was to watch David noan beat him in round four four let for service y better one game on first sets those first two meetings between these two pretty tight quite a few tight sets three tie breaks and a 75 as well wouldn't be surprised if we see one or two Breakers today there Alexander spev senior I think that's Misha in the middle there under the cap and got chess green on the right hand side as well he used to work with SV strength and conditioning coach from the UK worked with many of the top players I think I'm right in saying is back with Sev on a sort of consultancy basis jez yeah I believe so but he was definitely the the fitness coach that really transformed as far of as as an athlete early in his career was sort of wiry tall young man to the powerful explosive Dynamic Athlete that we see today incredible mover 6'6 and he can play long matches for sure yeah I remember talking to jez about that it it doesn't happen by accident does it you know it's a very much a it's a long-term plan sort of over a number of years this is how we build the body and protects the body which is probably just as important and it was a good hire by the team wasn't it I mean you know jez Green had the track record of transforming Andy Murray in that sense from a wiry teenager into an elite athlete along with Matt little early in Andy M's career has won ATP title that came in his hometown incidentally I just mentioned he's from San Diego that's where he won his ATP trophy 2022 he's had injury problems since struggled with a knee injury for a while which is one of the reasons he just disappeared back down the rankings but rebuilding that number had a very very good summer he's been busy as well hasn't he you were just totting up the matches that these two have played yeah not being afraid to drop down to Challenger tour advice of his his team yeah big from Z there just stepping up onto the Baseline and attacking with his twoand back so first chance an early chance for the fourth seed it's a big moment for [Applause] Nakashima it's very have far more experience playing this type of match and that for me makes that you know the early stages the first set all the more important for Nakashima to sort of establish the belief he can win this match out the ranking drop yeah you're right to mention the knee injury the knee nigle largely due to losing first round of all four grand slams last year three of them in five sets you know it could have been different but a big blow to the ranking certainly rebuilding his profile in the slams this year nashima for those [Applause] today imagine he'll be fairly comfortable in that back end to backend exchange both players will be very two good two-handers but Zero's certainly the discussion for best in the world i' nakima making a lot of first serves early on in this match 12 of 14 have hit the spot couple of Aces it's a good sign breeds confidence in a player and comes through an early scare nakim two games to one first set the American making sure we're still on serve after three games played this huge huge Stadium how did the Jacks do this weekend was that a good weekend score line 3-0 wi trending in the right direction early in the season sure about that partic thistle of course the Jacks my co- commentators part of the world there's the Nakashima two-hander we've already seen a couple of crackers from verev this time it's uh the Americans stepping in and drilling one right onto the Baseline [Applause] thir was in red hot form during the clay season the European clay season just a few weeks ago winner in Rome so another Master's title those are the the biggest strongest richest ATP events with the most points those are the tournament all the top players want to win took that form into Paris the second major of the season in this sport that's Roland G and made another final so two major finals the other one coming here of course Colin that was back in 2020 the co year yeah the lost to Dominic team agonizing loss for his very serf for the match in the fifth set could easily be a grand slam Champion but we still have big Ambitions to to become one still only 27 years of age Alexander ver plenty of good tennis ahead of him still so a couple of holds a piece two games all per set well they prepare for game five let's just remind you to make sure you've downloaded the US Open app with a big week ahead of us allows you to follow your favorite players track the scores and stats watch the match highlights get player news and new this year you can watch live 3D views of all the singles matches that's in the App Store and the Google Play Store yeah day seven now if you if you not got the app by now it's a yellow card downloading to keep up with all the action and tell you what it looks like we're in for plenty of action here on Armstrong I like the start both players have made Kima just he's not overplaying you know that can be the risk for the underdog in a match like this to come out and try and go for too much against against the top player and that was a perfect example there you know Z of making the return he will do do that well he makes a lot of balls but nakima then just happy to you know hit heavy move the ball around the court he's not trying to sort of just Blitz winners early on a real confidence in the way he's playing so far left for service for SE love both doing well behind their first deliveries three service games under his belt now he still only missed two first serves 17 of 19 he's made three games to two [Applause] 51 far have had a a late finish didn't he a couple of days ago that was where are we Sunday so Friday night early hours of Saturday morning in fact yeah about 2:30 a.m. he uh shoot cans with Thomas Martin E Argentine was thr everything at him ET very serving huge bigger than I've ever seen it reg in it 130 M hour plus range able to to come through late at night on this very Court [Applause] third sure it would have been a lighter day yesterday just get as much sleep as you can go through your routines your physial recovery bit of gym work maybe half an hour certainly no more than an hour on court four to still only lost one point on serves Rima not making any impact at all on return as yet ni shape to that pass had a bit of time and enough of the Gap 4 yeah that short ball from Nakashima almost forc vers hands had to come into the net wasn't the best approach in all honesty wanted to to go into the forehand of nashima but he had plenty of time to pick him off game too much to separate these two so far three games all for set just the one break point we've seen some of the former Champions and uh well probably the story The Big Two stories of the opening few days we didn't expect to lose 2023 defending Champion Novak jovic or the 2022 Champion Carlos alarz quite so soon did we in fact meddev the next player just above those two the only former Champion still left in the men's draw yaner the only other Grand Slam winner in the men's singles so he'd have to put those two as uh potentially two favorites remaining out problem in that regard for for the pair of them is that they're on a collision course to to face off in the quarterfinals C and Mev both in the top quarter of the draw this year c will play Tommy Paul tomorrow what a match that will be takes on Nuno boures the Portuguese who's having a great year all my friends over in esteril getting very excited about nuno's progress he's he's done a good job as Nuno he's taken over the Baton really from ja sza who retired this year was the former Portuguese number one I've met so many lovely people honestly in that part of the world so anytime Nuno boures is winning a match my Instagram stories just go Nuno crazy one after another everybody watching back home in Portugal they're getting excited it's been busy of late then not just here at the US Open he's uh having a breakthrough Year big game here it just feels last game with this first set of balls pressure on Nakashima to to come through and hold oh that's brilliant the way he was able to find the smallest of gaps 15 13 yeah you're right superb from Zev not the best net play from Nash I have to say didn't hit the but back in volley with much conviction and didn't really close he's actually pretty far back when that's where pass went past him not the most comfortable at the net Nakashima and under a bit of pressure here into the Outfield nobody there to catch it second unforced in the forehand in the game Big Mish hit certainly warmer than it was uh ver have played ET very in the the previous run late at night on Friday as we said Paul just flying a little more at this stage [Music] 4 13 this will be another good game to come through if he can get to the city down with a 4-3 lead game and he does after just under half an hour new plays to the opening phase of this match games to been able to stay with sare 43 such a a tight final 76 in the fifth one by team they switched ends in that tie rate didn't they six all imagine that being that close to a first major title of course we said goodbye to Dominic team here earlier in the first week team reflected on that slightly strange experience and I think was grateful for the he got on Arthur Ash first R lost to Sheldon but uh yeah I think nice to share a moment with a a much Fuller Stadium he'll always be remembered as a grand slam Champion though yeah never take that away from him playing his last tournament in Vienna this Autumn his team so saying goodbye to the sports oh no way I think Nakashima almost sort of gave up on it didn't he because he was waiting for the call Maybe i' been a bit harsh there but I was waiting for the call I thought brilliant returns ver has pulled that forand wide and somehow it's clipped the line was slightly fortunate I have to say l like he'd missed time beforehand it's another good return look at here he's uh little uncomfortable the way this match is playing out there was a a lot of well a lot by sare standards back and forth between him and his box against Mulo he won that match in straight sets but it was a really tight second save was 5-2 down in the breaker nine on for STS I think is the brot of his frustration here thir no problem with the serve in fact his serve so far has been maybe the best it's been all tournament I know we're still just in the first set here but first serve percentage in round one was 59 round two 64 in round 362 that's slightly Low by his very of standards season average is 72% the first s's going in so far today is at 89 interesting to see if he can sustain that seems unlikely there is a first double fault on a big Point 1 14 this is where the crowd support can lend Nakashima helping hand his first chance the break now please a murmur around the Lou Armstrong Stadium big second serve but it was a big return too and he does break Nakashima leads five games to three first 10 not a great game from but have to say Nakashima he's looking pretty confident and calm in this opening set certainly believing that he can cause the upset today what a chance this is now serving for the opening set love your [Applause] team words of advice from someone in his team just to his left he's down the same end as his box out oh he's missed it I think some of the crowd think that was good but there was an out call 13 they're definitely wide try to stay closer to the base gentlemen try to stay quiet during Play That's forla that point it was a very good point from Nima who did stay on the Baseline he pushed round back just missed it the crucial forehand oh no felt like he'd done the hard work 15 13 this is actually a slightly more one-sided crowd than I thought it might be farar has a lot of fans he's a big name of course but there's a lot of love for Nakashima this is the uh American Court here at the US Open t it's just uh with a big win on here they're fired up bad Miss reserve it was a little awkward though anytime you have to move to your right for an overhead you kind of get square on it is more missable still should have made it that's unbelievable for his to miss a ball like that on a big Point 13 for there not like him [Applause] oh just could not quite get up to the high back and volley 134 just not natural the net it's the second time in this set he's uh been caught out could have taken the volley earlier which would have given of less time just that hesitation cost Nakashima chance for the German to get this back on serve it's a rocket what a point to play what a time to hit your first backand winner of the match you you cannot hit a b gun any better than this just mixing things up with a slice got a slightly slower Tempo ball and just stepped in and ripped it it's got to be a surge of confidence for Nakashima Advantage nakasima after set point can he finish the job SP of still fighting youth we go [Music] [Applause] second juice into a seventh minute just a a real difference ADV between uh when Nakashima gets pushed back off the Baseline and when he's able to sort of have his weight going down the court and and stay on top of the Baseline that's what his Verve does to opponents you know he just hits big and heavy through the court sort of pushes them back forces errors oh nothing wrong with that net play yes that is uh an impressive play it's a brave play from Nakashima he's just taking us back to 1997 and 98 when Pat Rafa won here yeah he had a real clear plan on that volley and he executed it beautifully what a shot to play break point down what a mistake to make on the very next point though for the big second out wide missed it by a long way backham winner on the first break point amazing volley on the second what could he produce [Applause] here another chance to hit back for Zev another one saved you four break points he saved in this first set that's how to close down the Nets it's fabulous tennis and both men point of real quality 22 shots great ball strikings where I've taken the initiative moving forward and yeah his turn for a tasty volley just a soft hand cutting underneath that ball almost 10 minutes this game can he converts here he's played the break point superbly probably expecting another t- serve after the third break point of this game it's a nice mix from Nakashima oh advantage nakasima [Applause] American fans getting behind their man can he get himself over the line here and there's the set fabulous efforts to defend that service game by six gam three he's a set up on the number four seed get back on track quickly this is a big big set for the number four seed yeah it's going to be a physical test for his ver here who has uh the most number of wins on tour so far this season ahead of even one the more yanic C where on 55 but he spoke in the German press of having some test on prior to this tournament and feeling fatigued third all the tennis he's played a bit of an illness he's had since the Olympics and he's now well he's played 48 minutes of pretty intense tennis and got nothing to show for it still got three sets to win the fourth seed but uh from his point of view you don't want to get ahead of yourself you just got to stay in the moment work through it game by game for [Applause] T game zeven first game second set [Applause] 15 three wins here of course to make the last 16 for Nakashima not the first time he's made second week of a major made the the fourth round at Wimbledon two years ago third round of the French that summer as well so he's he's been relatively deep into the majors he had some good wins in the last few weeks maybe a sign that there was a a big run at a major around the corner he beats shapovalov and Tommy Paul more significantly during the Masters event in Canada part of the lead in to the US Open and he beat tayor Fritz in Cincinnati as well on quick courts there yeah with the wins over Runa and mazetti here it's four top 20 wins in August worth noting I think that Paul had made the the quick transition from the Olympics in Paris and so had Fritz in Cincinnati but still great wins for Nakashima and uh you're right he has been sort of trending towards this plenty of input plenty of solutions to find for teams ver did lose the first set to edar in the previous round so there'll be no panic but it's a big set for him here course without saying he won't want to fall two sets to love behind [Applause] we weren't expecting that effort I just got J and could get out the way another second serve point1 for Nakashima who's now 9 from 15 60% in the match and where of just returning those second serves from very deep in the court you know getting into the rally but the problem is in the rally is making a pretty high number of unforced STS so far today just wonder if he could actually step in and attack the second Ser put more pressure on the American see how he approaches this one see he's well behind the Baseline for the return you're not really looking to hit a winner or attack the net he's just going to start the rally here that time able to outlast out maneuver that kushima 143 definitely think it's something Z could add to his game you know just that that Variety in his play sometimes stepping in taking the second serve early just making opponents think say that in the context of not necessarily just trying to win this type of match but trying to you know beat the very top players in the last stages of slams just one or two more little weapons in his his Arsenal you [Applause] return position advantage nakima that return of serve certainly wasn't effective enough very straightforward point for the American [Applause] youth [Applause] oh out the errors is now starting to come from Nakashima Advantage V that's three or four in this game alone see if all five of the break points he faced in the first set most of them with big tennis have knocking on the door again here out that's a second right into the corner took it into the forehand but can you believe zv has missed that return like I say he's deep in the court because he he wants to make sure the return goes in first and foremost gets into the rally it's a donation there [Applause] [Applause] [Music] Advantage imag imagine he's going to break through eventually all these chances coming his way it's another one saved though yeah nakima Living Dangerously isn't he if he keeps cing up these uh breakpoint opportunities seven now is be of his hard without breaking for [Applause] Advantage Z could just forgotten to take his towel down to the center of the court so just taking a few moment to get rid of some of the perspiration still humid no he's missed another this is unbelievable he continues to just play this sort of I would call a slightly pensive style of play it's quite a safe point he played wasn't it I mean it is his style he he's basically thinking okay I'm going to keep the ball in the court to a decent length I'm going to trust my movement and I'm going to wait for Nakashima to miss that's what zv does he doesn't really take the ball on in the big moments let he does take it on usually comes after 8 n 10 shots in the point struggling off that first serve Nakashima in this Opening Service game of his five of 14 which hasn't helped and here comes another chance he's at eight Advantage so far in the match just can't find a quality point to that juice side in particular we've seen a couple of Sur voles to the ad I wouldn't mind seeing him to the juice Court using the wide serve to his ver four and coming in and trying to knock off the volley in the meantime though he's got himself another break point to save a ninth of the match fourth of the game game is ready rewarded for his patience and breaks early in this second set two yeah eventually got his break it's a bad game a poor game from Brandon Nakashima not a first seres too many errors from the Baseline but won't be worrying about that he'll feel be delighted with his start this second ladies and gentlemen behind the players try to find your seat quickly behind the players please any seat available for now controlled movement parts of the US Open this year so fans are allowed in after every game played rather than just at the change EV ents 51 [Applause] third sea just motioning up to the the overhead camera just asking for that to be parked just to the side of the court all sorted for [Applause] game he's done a very good job SAR of brushing aside the disappointment and frustration from losing the first set he's lost his way of touch hasn't he how frustrated you think Colin will Nakashima B having handed over the initiative so quickly yeah I mean he should be frustrated it was a poor game you know any level but particularly Grand slam's best of five sets you know the the beginning of every set is so important you so often see it you know the momentum swings in the first two three games of of a set ver of using all his experience just to stay sort of locked in akashima had the dip and here we are it's three loves with the break I'm sure sanguinetti and uh like's team will be frustrated but you know you can't dwell on it 1 got to just uh clear your mind get back to operating at the level that he [Music] was just never let that focus and intensity drop it's the challenge of best the five set teners it's in many ways the challenge of facing someone like Z who you know we spoke of he he could probably be more adventurous with his tennis at times particularly in some big moments I feel but you know the way he plays it does ask the question of opponents can you sustain a high enough level to to beat me over best of five sets when I'm sort of physically very strong moving well putting a lot of returns and balls in play serving big for service he got to play a very high level and sustain it for a long period to beat Z in a slant out 43 for [Applause] youth to back up your points Nakashima zero and four against top 10 players at the majors of course that means uh matches that are best of five sets tougher to be the top guys over that distance [Applause] Advantage Z chance to effectively finish off this second set already you would imagine she can go up two breaks G and he does races into a fall love lead V leads four games to low second set what a response didn't see this coming after to have that first set finished just a quick reminder that is the official tournament website address usopen.org it's where you can find all the live scoring highlights stats draws schedules as well the schedules of the schedule of the singles matches tomorrow already on site 5 it's the official tournament website at usopen.org back in the top half of both draws tomorrow so top seed CER in action top seed shant in action so they're playing Tommy Paul that will be big big match for the world number one in the American as well yeah hold tiet that one that's for sure already have two quarter finalists of course Taylor Fritz earlier today go demitro winner of this match will face Taylor Fritz in that quarterfinal ladies and Gentlemen please please try to keep your voices down during play for both players thank you Marana vich uh asking that the fans to keep their voices out I I wouldn't have said it's overly loud so so far Armstong no different to normal I mean this is the US Open after all and it's uh in the on strong [Applause] court all part of the fun playing here Flushing Meadows it is a noisy Court there's a lot going on there's a lot of movement around this court top tiers people coming and going that's free movement up in the upper tier often get the planes going overhead as well out a bit of a a let down this second set from Nakashima I have to say who 45 since David sanguinetti Italian started coaching him uh in the fall of of last year really worked a lot on the mental side his confidence his belief and I'm sure his Focus his intensity and he's just dropped off a cliff somewhat in this second set all the hard work of winning the first and then you just essentially gift the next set to your opponent game is five love in under half an hour very five games to love second set first set Nakashima oneway traffic on Armstrong eight from this man 15 another thing that's worth mentioning is obviously a very humid day a little bit warmer than in the last couple of days as well can just be more draining mentally as well as physically as important Nakashima gets the intensity back up just feels like he's falling into a bit of a lull with his his tennis he's got to get third the spark back we heard uh sanguinetti at the end of the first set telling him to get up close to the Baseline and not get pushed back and and dictated to better try and get back to that sort of tennis oh yes that's how to hit a backand pass 1 15 is just picture perfect big Dynamic strides across the court 45 game [Applause] nakima five games to one second set so he's avoided the New York Bagel on Bruce Beck Bagel day na myself one of those earlier on Sensational that's a sort of become a tradition amongst us broadcasters isn't it here at New York bit of cream cheese yeah can't beat it toasted nice touch from Bruce what of long-standing colleagues who brings about I think he must bring about a 100 in on the middle Sunday doesn't he two massive sacks of bagel we all get stuck in very kind of him it's a nice tradition that we've been able to enjoy recent years [Applause] just a bit of perspiration on the course I think not surprising really on a day like this sort of mid 70% humidity heat in the air good judgment just recognizing that there was too much on that one third love couple of points away from leveling the match he will be feeling a lot less stressed than he was 35 minutes ago 1 15 Exquisite Bonnie a shake of the head has he got an issue with maybe his Footwear or on the I think it's is with regards to how much he's sweating you're right great volley here moved out to it nicely but you could see him sort of slide after the volley he almost like he's sweating through the shoes we're sitting right above his box I can see his dad's got four pairs of shoes lined up down there piled on top of one another so I think maybe there'll be a change of Footwear if he wraps this set up we'll see it's like a shoe shot down there set [Applause] points 43 part of the planning isn't it on days like these these warm days these humid days making sure you've got enough kits and you're taking care of the body body temperature ice towels gels plenty of drinks the right kinds of drinks as well all comes with experience and the luxury of a big team as well there we go great spot by the camera crew game second set for goes along Sev levels he'll be pleased with that set and I think he is heading over for a new pair of Footwear ahead of set number three set a p just going to run through the players who are still going in this bottom half of the draw so one of these of course will be a US Open finalist in a few days time Taylor Fritz as Colin was saying he's in the quarterfinals already these two guys Nakashima and Sev demitro is through to the quarters he be rublev and tifo and po so Fritz Nakashima Sev demitro tifo poin take your pick who's your US Open finalist what a chance yeah it's a big opportunity yes that's a hammer of aound best for his hit so far today brother Misha like that one he just got such long levers where you know even from way back in the court he can generate such a a big hit you know even in the top half of the draw Le it feels like a big opportunity for everyone remaining you know s where is he at is he is he at the very top of his game I'm not sure he is yet anyway meev looked good last night the only uh former US Open winner left in the the men's singles Here Comes R it like it was going to be a big game where is he gone since the first set great game to serve out the opening set Ser saving the break points playing big tennis crowd were really engaged and he's just disappeared as so as the atmosphere here on Armstrong big chance Reserve now 154 [Applause] yes certainly a lot quieter than it was at the end of the first set since farv has started to take control two saved 304 for game better another early break first game third set starts the third as he did the second Kima spoke of his his mentality he said it's a it's a positive and a negative 5 love to quote the he said he's really Cal all the time but sometimes I would like him to be a bit of a firecracker and to explode equally when he's focused he's a machine I can see what he means cuz now that he's fallen out of the match big Miss hit that you're thinking where is he where's the energy the intensity he's let the crowd fall out of the match here been a really really disappointing 45 minutes here for Brandon Nakashima and his team for love just wonder maybe after he he played such a good game to to win the opening set did his mind just wonder did he start to think of the outcome did he start to think this would be a big win in a quarterfinal at the US Open something's definitely happened to his his psych game he will truly know very beds two games to L third set yeah it's one of those score lines isn't it at the moment if you hadn't seen any of the match or maybe you just checking the scores around the grounds you'd sort of glance up and go oh what's happened to mosima yeah wonder if he's injured maybe or but you know there's no suggestion of that of course but that's how quickly and dramatically the the match has turned around Us's to hold here 5 [Applause] 30 love P love it gamea a big Miss it's more like it from Nakashima though just re-engaging and maybe just bringing this Armstrong crowd back into the match very two games to one third set German so good chance a bit of that one might be under the lights oh that's a quality point right there hit the ball with real Authority particularly on his forehand great depth you can see just pushing Nakashima back and then that was a good sign for his ver when he's coming in and looking confident [Applause] 1 15 w it's unlucky it's it's a better point I I just think Nakashima could look to be a little more attacking bring a bit more intent into his play I think that would help get him going again [Music] game solid redirection very beds three games to one third set comfortably on top at the moment set a piece 3--1 but with all the momentum verev at this stage stay connected to the US Open on Facebook X Instagram Tik Tok YouTube and WhatsApp this year as well all the social channels join the conversation with # usop oh well done his court coverage is exceptional great hustle there just to get the ball over the net and then stay engaged in the point so comfortable for a big man 66 sliding on a hardore ankle injury from 2022 now well in the rear view mirror it was just crossed my mind when we were talking about the Footwear and how he was sliding and maybe there was a bit of moisture going through the shoes oh whether he's extra cautious in those moments you know having had a bad ankle injury I don't think so I think I think it's a reasonable question to ask but I think with SP of he looks he looks to have really moved on from the injury now I think when you come back from a significant ankle injury you know the ligament damage that he did yes there's a period where you have to rebuild the trust in your own mind but you can see there the right ankle there is a a strapping underneath the the sock got him again here but he you know he never looks sort of like he hesitates moving wide to the the forehand certainly terms of his movement just not quite enough on the approach here too Central from Nakashima paid the prize has to somehow get himself out of this game Nakashima otherwise this set will be done too slipping away from [Applause] him it's been impressive how 154 quickly sov has cut out the unforced Aras there were a fair few in the first set weren't there but it's been stingy since yeah he has deserves credit for that you're right but equally akashima missing more so have less opportunities to miss himself chances to end the second set here and that will do it he's got him again this is good stuff from the fourth seed games to don't think it'll be too long before he wraps up set number three 4-1 double break now should enough to win this third set 5 third to if he does win this match it would be another grand slam quarterfinal another quarterfinal here he's got a he's got a good record here in New York at his recent visits he makes the last dates this evening he will have made at least the quarterfinals in the last four visits that final in 2020 made the semis 2021 didn't play 2022 because of the ankle injury quarterfinals last year and at the moment seemingly heading into the last eight tonight he he must feel like the Grand Slam title is coming semis in Australia this year final of the French fourth round at Wimbledon but he would probably sight a bit of a KNE isue there here he is well not in the quarters yet but looking like he's on his way [Applause] out for it's amazing really because the start of the second set you know I speculated that it would be a a significant mental effort from Z who's spoken about his own sort of physical fatigue coming into this tournament but just an hour hour later he's very nearly two sets to one up [Applause] game that's almost the problem with nakash for nakima now it's not just a case trying to get his own game going again but s now is comfortable he's playing a higher level himself he's pretty fresh he must be delighted with the way the last hour has played out yeah especially after the late finish in fact that time that he finished against SE is just flashed up on the big screen for the the fans to see second ever latest finish here at the US Open 2:35 a.m. it was see you've always got one eye on conserving as much energy as you possibly can especially for Zev though given how many matches he's played as Colin was telling us third T oh that is a missile of a backhand just green likes it yeah we've seen this once or twice already in this match any times where is able to get that right foot across and planted he is so dangerous with a two-hander it's just a rocket crosscourt for C5 403 gima makes this third set score line just a little bit more respectable bed five to two third sets SP will be the favorite to finish off the set in a few moments time 52 [Applause] 15 L it was a set away from a a major title in Paris led alcaras by two sets to one in that ring gas final it's what it's all about now fare he's achieved so much in the game he one many of the biggest titles almost at the top of the rankings it's been two before in that respect yeah it's a grand slam title and and the world number one ranking I would say yeah for his ver you know he's won the the tour finals he's won at Mass 1,000 level he's won Olympic gold it's won his home tournament in Hamburg that was a big one for him last year thir emotional scenes he will just be desperate to get that covered Grand Slam title and he he got to be thinking that this is a big opportunity here yeah this year in New York alarz and jovic out for love set points for the former finalist let for service [Applause] [Music] eases into a two sets to one lead now favorites to come through this once verev by done a good job turning this match in his favor takes the Third 6-2 as you pointed out Colin just a few minutes ago when we're looking at the third set stats the double bonus for Zev is that as you put it he took the sting out of the match it was it was a big and noisy atmosphere after the first it was a very high level very intense first set that Nakashima got the better of played a great game to save four break points and serve it out for 63 the crowd went wild and since then it's been all ver but also Nakashima has just gone missing they both left the court after the second set on a very humid day to change their out fits came back out and rushima gifted his Opening Service game to his R in set three and he's in real trouble again here this is a must win game for Brandon Nakashima he's got to get it going right here right now or his run at this year's US Open he going to start to fizzle out in a hurry I I I just think this is where Nakashima has to show the crowd something you know get pumped up give them a fist pump give them a Kam ladies and gentlemen once again please now that we continueed play try keeping your voices down during play thank you you know show himself shows Verve show his team show the crowd you know get fired up here comes in again to the back hand and pays the price 154 familiar outcome that back end down to his toes and it's very quick to pick him off and as was the case start of the second set start of the third set as Colin was saying again here we are with chances forare to strike early 304 broken four times already the German oh wow that's a surprising Miss chose to take his trusted to the back from the middle of the court it's another Factor isn't it that surprised us about the turnaround you know having com to First Set n Kim handed over the initiative to SV instantly once that second set started at a completely different match within about 5 minutes Advantage Nima there we go bit of noise and a bit of energy from Brandon Nakashima the little jog to the chair first game for [Applause] love 15 [Applause] 15 [Applause] on served well so far today's Verve 71% first serves have gone in that's around his season average he's been below that for the tournament so far top players do they tend to raise the level throughout Grand Slam fortnits third [Applause] [Applause] quick repair job to the LED screen at the back of the Court for C15 [Music] game one game on [Music] for it's the Arash Stadium right in the middle of that shot the biggest stadium and then just above it bit that's where we are the Louis Armstrong Stadium second biggest Court here at the national tennis s City Field the home to the Mets baseball team as well just just across the tracks the train tracks there are neighbors that s inside Lou Armstrong oh easy easy power beautiful timing hardly looked like he really even tried to generate Pace here those long levers working nicely yeah you're exactly right it's just the sort of big languid swing isn't it wasn't really trying to hit a winner there but just struck so sweetly out one at a time team trying to pick him [Applause] up help him out of another difficult spot oh very nice held the pose for the cameras there very bed two games to one for and again he's broken early he's on his way SPV with the early break set number four serving at 2-1 I like the play from Nakashima trying to take the initiative and the point it just just isn't natural moving forward definitely something he can continu to work on his coach David sanguinetti was a nice net player I'm sure they're working on it have done a good job again just getting the ball down low and picking him off on the next ball I think Nakashima has to go for it now though nothing to lose at this stage ver playing too well he's unlikely to let his level drop off 15 total winners in the match 43 for ver 15 for Brandon Nakashima who that's a reasonably big game himself just hasn't brought it in set two three and four so far no I mean I was I was very impressed with how he was trading withv off the ground in the early stages holding his own wasn't he 14 te [Applause] out game set Rock Solid from the German very leads three games to one fourth set session change over happening in the big house Arthur rash thank you ladies and gentlemen fourth round coming up soon players are now ready Alexi poin be on court there later if you fancy getting your hands on any of the usopen merch by the way usopenshop.org that's where you need to head it's the official shop for the 2024 US Open merchandise get your game face on on your game date fit on with us open gear Colin Fleming's always got his game feds on every day of the week got my eyes some of the gear in that shop as well it's good stuff isn't it yeah be taking some home to Scotland you have to take care of the family oh that didn't look good what was wide to the forehand remember 2022 Rand Garis where he damaged the ligaments no wonder there's some concern on the faces of his team his father there very similar situation and yeah the right ankle just strained it there beforehand found the line by the way it was a winner love 13 that is a worry though both ankles are taped for precaution Kima here you got to be ruthless you got to move him wide to the forand as many times as you can in the next few games test the movement in the ankle seemed to be okay on that point third to all [Applause] not the time for a double fall your opponents just tweak their ankle and and it might be a potential Lifeline in the match oh beautiful well if there is any discomfort he would have to leads suffer for too much longer but it looks okay after that almost ankle turn 4-1 he is firmly in control P it's a little hard to comprehend what's happened here Brandon Nakashima we may well find out more in postmatch press but such an impressive first set it felt like he was ready for this match he felt like he was on his way hasn't happened for him since and to be fair his ver has dominated he's moved through the gears mentioned that quarterfinal that awaits with Taylor Fritz the interesting thing is neither player have played a ma a match on Arthur Ash yet where you would think that quarterfinal would take place yeah I think somebody told me or a readit somewhere that that Taylor really loves this court yeah he requests this court yeah some people are question why is Fritz always on Armstrong he's not getting on ash but he he loves it on here I think having that mix of uh ticket holders and general admission you know the atmosphere gets very loud in here it was booming for Fritz's went over rude earlier but yeah the matches where will be on ash when I say they've not played on there I mean this year of course but it is uh relevant just different surroundings well that was a ver of backhand pass we've seen very few of those since the first set 15 this is what he's capable of the twoand backend in particular such a pure strike there hardly any spin on the ball just crunched third TI 14 1 game as clean as you like games to one set as have these last three sets been forev just so one-sided didn't see it coming after how well Nakashima played in the first desing to stay in the tournament now I think what we've seen today from Nakashima is that he has a really high potential live rankings he's forecast to climb to somewhere around 40 in the world again you know in terms of his serve Four Hands back hands that you know the sort of tangibles there's a very high potential there but he's got a few things to figure out men still to compete at at this level it's the second Grand Slam fourth round of his career you know a fantastic result but he's going to have to sit down with his team and I think probably have quite an honest conversation about where this match went wrong off the back of a really impressive first set he's just uh somewhat disappeared in the match yes ver of has has played well but he's the four SE it it's a grandson fourth round you got to expect that I don't think if Nakashima played the level from the first set this would have been 61 62 possibly 61 again tends to keep his cards close to his chest doesn't really show any emotion he clearly been plenty going on between the years for Nakashima not too much spev could do about the net cord did well to bumpt that one back into play yeah he did very well just to get a racket on this it's actually a very clean strike on the pass and Nakashima no Pace whatsoever on that ball out 143 [Applause] game neim keeps it going for just a little bit longer at least games two will serve for a place in the quarterfinals 5-2 four points away [Applause] 5 good serve numbers in this set he only missed four first serves dropped Four Points behind his own deal good point from the American great deps just a sixth Point all match as SP of his lost on his first serve there's no doubt he'll move through feeling like he's played a very good match here certainly from the start of the second set onwards he's a winner away from a half century anytime you can achieve that they have to be hitting the ball pretty well [Applause] 15 13 been right behind him when he's been able to get the better of zov Lon share of the crowd inside Armstrong hoping please could just sneak a break here make this fourth set interesting there we go rais the back Colin Fleming 50 on the board yeah just as they do in cricket 50 winners in four sets is good tennis been a good spread as well 19 of them have come on the forehand for his ver which is a good sign 14 Aces 10 on his backhand and a good number of four is to the net and another that's 20 off that Wing today 4 [Applause] [Music] having dropped the first set it hasn't taken him long at all to bring up a chance to finish this off just over two and a half hours on court match point finishes with a big surf it is a fourth quarterfinal for Alexander sare here at the US Open and having dropped the opening sets hit cruise control really surprisingly one side did thereafter he'll be back to face Taylor Fritz that will be a blockbuster quarterfinal SPV getting it done in four sets on Armstrong today [Applause] [Music]
