needed something to get them going but it is only one game they'll look to build off of all that here tonight behind their young promising rookie pitcher zebie Matthews is on the mound for his sixth start of his big league career looking for his first win since his debut after allowing just five earned runs over his first three starts he allowed 13 on 19 hits over his last two now run support and energy like we saw last night could go a long way but they are Beyond his control his focus and his mindset however are not zebie like everyone else um I want him to to know and understand he he just has to do his part and and no more just go out there and do your part which which entails getting ahead of hitters which entails uh beyond the strike throwing um you know getting to two strike getting out of the Zone when he needs to um and just competing out there that's that's what he needs to do stay focused and compete stay with you know the moment have fun like I said and you know uh put put all the Ser he can in the in the scoreboard and and give us a chance to score and and win the game and what have you seen from him each start as he's learning and getting used to this level yeah he's a great pitcher I think he's learning a lot with p and all the the pitching staff here and and I think it's going to help us to win over series a World Series would sure be nice but first things first off the bat of the lefties slider's been a big swing and Miss pitch for him against the righties saw a couple of Cutters to start the at bat but throwing strikes and quality strikes is important in the air to center field sending kiry back kir still going and that is gone a leadoff home run for Taylor Ward is 23rd and the angels take a quick one- nothing lead oh got himself a fast ball right down the middle looked like it hopped off the top of the center field wall and got out of here on a line 105 off the bat didn't miss it and that was a one-w pitch and that's what hurts zebi often in Kansas City as the last start two strikes he was was able to do that but not able to put the Royals hitters away and that was a one-w fast ball and Ward hit his 23rd home run he's now reached base safely in 21 straight games yeah yeah you saw last you saw the target up under the hands and Miss location over threw it just a little bit but when hitters know you're going to be around the plate when you have your reputation as being a strike thrower they're ready to swing every pitch they're ready they're expecting something somewhere near the plate at some point you might need to make them a little more uncomfortable and show them that you can land pitches inside and maybe a little off the plate got in on Zack Netto this one to left and Willie Castro makes the play on Netto and there's first base again tonight two for seven he's knocked in two in this series got the call on the change up no balls and two strikes the change up certainly more in play for zebi against lefties than he has displayed so far against righties yeah to your point he's only throwing twice total to the right handed hitters he thrown about 8% of the time to the lefties no home runs Allowed no strikeouts on that pitch but it is something that he's going to need to be able to mix in there to keep these hitters honest Bas sated into left on a curve ball lefties have done better than righties against zebie Matthews in terms of average slug Ops lefties just in terms of batting average alone hitting 373 against the rookie yeah not just the average the the slug as well they've done damage done the fast ball the slugging is over 700 over 600 on that slider over 700 on the curveball so it's been a challenge for him with the lefties and see if he's able to make an adjustment sure he will he's very talented fast ball misses high on Brandon Drury so B hits for the angels have come with two strikes towards home run now sha noell single this is up the middle and Lee could not get there Julian stopped and rounding second hanging on near the bag of shaunell so a ground ball base hit and the angels have more traffic on one in two on only one out here in the first inning well you got two young middle infielders playing the pull look at Julian he starts to go after this ball his instincts tell him go get it and then he goes to the bag and soft HP ball Finds Its way up the middle middle Brooks Lee playing way over on the pole side not expecting him to go up the middle there so a tough play not hard hit ball that wasn't made if he can get himself another softly hit ground ball and they can roll it up here Nicki moniac had a great month of August at 359 in August but just 3 for 29 so far here in September in Center Field tonight as he waves and misses on a change up so again we'll see if Matthews can put an angels hitter away with two strikes glance back to Second for zebie and the 02 pull F see that's just command as you go on in your career the feel okay he swung at twins answer back it's a 1-1 game effortless just an effortless cut with so much power it's just a great approach against the guy who's going to throw a ton of sinkers so as a lefty it's going to be running away from you he just keeps that head down at contact and that ball just jumps off of his Bat he stays hot and the twins answer right back he's now homered in backto back games in the two spot for the second time this season and the second time and as many nights just going to say I love this this this match up a guy who can hit fast balls guy who's going to throw a ton of fast balls a 70% Sinker you just don't see that ratio that percentage really that often in today's game from any pitcher certainly a starter Santana homered last night to the right side hit hard but right at Drury and he throws out the twins first baseman for out number two expect a ton of growl balls cuz that's what konowitz can do 59 grow balls over his last five starts before this one tonight so on a guy like this for me facing a sinker baller faced a couple of them in Cleveland a few years back but I just changed my target on the ball wasn't thinking of hitting the ball in the air wasn't thinking about trying to lift I was just trying to hit the bottom half of the ball you understand it's going to keep keep going towards the ground as it's coming towards the plate some people will think you got to lift you got to change your approach whatever it is but for me it was just setting my sights a little bit lower on the actual baseball and that was my way of kind of counteracting that I know he's trying to get me to hit it into the ground I know it's going to start thigh high it's going to end up at at my knees and you know it looks like you're going to crush it every time coming in and front side leaves you just a little bit too soon it ends up being a lot of roll over ground balls Justin Masterson was that a guy that that would come to mind you mentioned Cleveland yep similar size right to konowitz yes a real power Sinker it was fto Carmona later Roberto Hernandez two very similar tall right-handed pitchers with through a ton of fast balls a ton of sinkers and just the sights of the big part of the field and try to hit the bottom of that baseball Square it up and it'll go one and two on Trevor lck and he grounds this one to the right side and pass a sliding Drury and lck has a two-out single he's going finally all those hard hit balls that I've been having that end up in fielders love finally starting to see some roll through that big part of the field no shift anymore that's long gone and you love seeing that get under his glove actually Dove over the top of it just to didn't quite get down in time to it L's not going to complain about that Trevor larik has now reached Bas safely in his last five pled appearances and now Royce Lewis looking a snap out of it here tonight had the night off last night for his last 20 hitting just 156 here in September has one reinstating Christian Vasquez from the paternity list and Manny Margo from the iil while optioning Jer Margo and Michael Helman to St Paul yes Vasquez did have one more day left of his paternity leave but Rocko Bal Deli laughed that he didn't want to take any in the first place he actually had to tell vasy that he was not welcome here at the Ballpark on Monday so the two settled for just two days off instead of three vasi says you know right now we have something good here this is a team effort and I want to be here for my team plus my wife Gabby is a rock star she's been through this before and she told me get your butt back to work guys audre thanks and if the twins can indeed wrap up a postseason spot again this October you know Vasquez unlike last fall you know he figures to be an active player in a way that he wasn't right Morty last year did not catch a single moment at all during that six-game run made some adjustments in the second half the bat has really come along and see how it plays out the rest of the way but he's been valuable to right and walner will see this one land in front of him so ni kavadas he's had a good series on again now 6 for n in this series and that's a rare single most of his damage has gone for extra bases go fooled a little bit but hit it down towards the end of the bat and in the right spot in front of walner and right two two curve ball young starting pitcher a guy who can go out there and throw strikes he's not going to get himself in trouble too often but then understanding okay big league hitters are capable of hitting this when I throw it here they're capable of doing this I need to refine some things a little bit but I said right now it's just I can navigate this Angel's lineup struck came out with a slider that stayed up in the zone and Ward is out number two back to- back strikeouts here for Matthews oh the old deadly backup slider not where he wanted to get this pitch it never kind of came down the one he struck out Adams on had that good depth to it and this one he swings under it because he's expecting he SE spin he's expecting it to get to a certain spot it never got there but you'll take a swing ad Miss on right it's part of why you trusted to bring him up when he started the year in AB ball dou a AAA and the fact that he's showing at every level that he can throw strikes he can fill up the strike zone it's part of what got him here that's a rare walk to begin with let alone on four pitches and kavadas is on again and Rocko Bal Deli is going to head out and he's going to make a move so Matthews 61 over 14% with his walk rate so a lower walk rate a much higher strikeout rate and with that a really good season and right on Q Cory what does he do he walks Taylor Ward so Ward is on base that'll run to leave the game with an elbow injury in the fourth inning that's the most leadoff homers in a single season in big Le league history I don't think he's going 4040 like Sano but one of the most unique leadoff hitters the game has ever seen will take his walks will punish pitches from the first pitch of the game makes that pitcher be aware makes him uncomfortable from the start incredible just he gets swings and misses on that pitch because of the arm angle the arm slot coming out a very similar spot to his fast ball and he likes to start it just a little bit off that outside corner and kind of let it run back you don't want to hit a fast ball in from Cole Sands if you're right-handed hitter it's going to eat you up a lot of times so you set your sights in a little different different spot when you're facing a guy with this type of arm slot this type of movement two and two on Netto he struck him out with a splitter just the fourth strikeout to a righty with that splitter lineup nothing's going to come up I think also once you spent time in the minor leagues you're not going to take those days for granted you come back up manager say you good to go I don't think you're going to give an opportunity to take your name out of the the lineup when you jump back and forth between Triple A and the big leagues because life in the big leagues is that much better I think also we talked about this off the top the struggles he went through early in the year will benefit him for years to come to hit rock bottom to be completely lost at the plate in the big leagues and to understand that you're able to come out of it I think that'll benefit him for for so long in his career I think it's just I've said this so many times had a great half seon we traded mavich opened the door for me and then I struggled for my first full big full year in the big leagues and I learned more from that year than I did any other year I played you go through struggles you question yourself you lose your confidence you go through all different types of ups and downs and you come out of on the other side and you learn how to work through those slumps and you get out of them a little bit quicker I think we saw that earlier now he's playing with a ton of confidence he's hitting in the middle of the lineup upper part of the lineup and a penet Chase and he does not look overwhelmed at all and I think it has to do with the fact that he struggled at the start of the year and he found his way back and now he believes that he belongs here one ball one strike on Trevor lck as that one Baseball so he doesn't get a l lot of time off cars and I being active duty in the military we don't get a ton of time together so it's obviously special every single time the whole family can get together the Three Brothers especially uh but big day for all the Jack family and unfortunately it looks like Jax may have just gotten a unfortunate souvenir Carson similar along those lines to get the family together the Air Force the military is very special to your family so what does it mean for everybody to have Jacks representing you guys on the field but also have something that brings so many of your family members together in an incredible way yeah it's amazing um we grew up watching baseball loving baseball so it's amazing that Griff's playing for the twins that we're able to come out here and support him um and then obviously our three wives are also in the military so it's great that all six of us were able to come out and support and Parker real quick uh you guys came in from Utah it's not like we just picked up these Jets here in Minneapolis you guys came in from Utah you know how difficult was the planning process and how long did it take to get here yes we've been planning for the logistic problem uh every single time we take the Jets off uh obviously $100 million jets we got to make sure everything's done right uh big shout out to the maintenance team we going smack to left field slicing and that will be caught by Taylor Ward to end the inning but the twins do add two more on the Lewis double off the wall and left twins by three after seven well from this angle we couldn't exactly tell how far away that fence is behind between that Fan's glove and the top of the wall this gives us a pretty good look here there is a space that's the part of the stands that actually lifts up so when there's when there is concert on the field when they need to get big equipment onto the field there that is the part that opens so there is no flower bed there and that's why there isn't that's why there's a low gap right there and there's a a tunnel that leads out to bringing in the big trucks and everything you need to be able to drive through there and
