KSL News time is 5:00 this is Utah's Morning News I'm Tim Hughes and I'm Amanda Dixon KSL's top story this hour new wildfires are burning here in Utah and around the western states and it's soon going to have an impact on our air quality K us on news radio's Adam small begins our live team coverage Utah fire watch Adam Amanda Prime fire conditions have not eased up around the state we've got another active Red Flag Warning in much of the uent mountains through tomorrow night but fire danger obviously still all present throughout the state and with all these new fires in the west the smoke is once again going to make its way into our neck of the woods gastle meteorologist Matt Johnson tells me that smoke is going to really start to kick up tomorrow make its way in could put us in the orange or unhealthy for sensitive groups range for air quality but the good news is Matt says as we make our way through the week that smoke is going to start to dissipate day by day as winds from the south start to push it out the good news is in the meantime at least we're not going to have to deal with 100 degree heat here for a few more days with highs in the mid90s through Wednesday Thursday as the smoke starts to clear out more the temperature is going to start to go up again live Adam small KSL News radio Utah has seen over 600 fires this year with new fires starting every day KSL News radio's verl Johansson has more over 40,000 Acres have burned this season with almost half of them from fir started by people 11 fires have started in the last day burning almost 400 Acres of all the fires this year people caused more than 2third of them verl Johansson KSL News radio KSL's top National stories now the explosive Park fire in Northern California has grown into the biggest fire in the state this year burning up to 5,000 acres per hour thousands of people have evacuated including Susan Singleton and her husband whatever we had can be replaced but I wouldn't have left the animals at all she took shelter in their vehicle with their seven dogs the Flames have burned well over a 100 Residential Building ings the man accused of starting the fire will be in court today the Venezuelan president is claiming he won a third term in office but many leaders around the world including US Secretary of State Anthony blankin are questioning the results we've seen the announcement just a short while ago by the Venezuelan electoral commission we have serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people the United Socialist Party has been the only ruling political party in Venezuela since 2007 home sales have declined for the third month in a row and June is usually one of the busiest months for Real Estate Utah Association of real tours Treasurer Aaron drussell says we've gotten into a lot of trouble by pricing out the firsttime home buyers Utah has always been driven by the first-time home buyer like our housing Market's always been driven by that and when we price the first-time home buyer out of the marketplace that kind of stagnates everything else across the board drussell worries that everyone is trying to wait out the market but since you Utah has a shortage of homes if mortgage rates drop prices will soar the National Association of home builders announced a 10-point plan with the goal of bringing home prices down KSL News radio's Michael kit is live with that story Michael Tim in essence these 10 points range from eliminating excessive regulations to promoting careers in buildings so the question is how is Utah doing following these Stacy young the government Affairs officer with Southern Utah homebuilders Association says one of Utah's biggest strengths with these points is keeping construction a popular career choice building is still a fairly popular career path here locally and and you know uh I think younger kids grow up seen seen it as a as a more viable uh career path still young says different communities are reacting differently to these and the other nine points so progress in home price across the state will likely look uneven reporting live Michael kit KSL News radio Delta and the FAA are investigating a flight out of Salt Lake City after the wing tip of a plane struck the tail of another plane on the runway during takeoff and Delta Tak Hotel 12 I Britt Johnson second more red flag warnings around the state today and more Wildfire smoke blows in tomorrow third it's traffic and weather together traffic on i-15s off to an okay start on the main flow getting onto the freeway though couple of issues South 15 at fifth South that on ramp still closed and if you're trying to go from Highway 89 in Farmington onto Legacy Parkway southbound that ramp is still closed I'm Andy Farnsworth in the KSL traffic center hazy sunshine with a high 96 more smoke tomorrow I'm Matt Johnson right now 71 degrees at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios and a lot of that smoke is coming from that Park fire in California let's get the latest from ABC news from ABC News I'm Sherry Preston the Raging Park fire in Northern California is now bigger than the city of Los Angeles it is burning 5,000 Acres an hour says ABC's Jaclyn Lee on the ground the park fire destroying dozens of homes and buildings scorching more than 350,000 Acres firefighters continuing to hold the line putting out these spotfires and it is a Race Against Time as temperatures continue to rise later this week the fire now 12% contained one of more than 100 wildfires burning in the west President Biden will today propose reforms to the US Supreme Court including enforcable ethics and disclosure rules for gifts as well as an 18-year term limmit for all justices weeks after the assassination attempt against Donald Trump members of the SWAT team on duty that day in Butler Pennsylvania are speaking exclusively to ABC senior investigative correspondent Aon kki you had no communication with the secret service at all on that Saturday no not until after the shooting I believe yeah and by then it was too late the Beaver County SWAT team also saying they saw gunman Thomas Crooks an hour before the shooting but members of Trump's Secret Service team say they were never told Venezuela's president touting a third term even as the opposition cries foul and the Us and other governments question the legitimacy of the vote on stage Nicholas Maduro thanking voters for defending democracy and taking a dig at US policy he said the sanctions haven't been enough against the Dignity of the people but the opposition says no we want it for the record the national electoral Council says Maduro secured 51% of the vote the main opposition candidate 44% Tom Rivers ABC News at the Forex the French government says multiple telecommunications lines have been hit by acts of vandalism affecting fiber optic lines and fixed in mobile phone lines amid the Olympics you're listening to ABC News Paris 2024 special coverage on KSL News radio the Olympics have officially kicked off but not without some concerns a practice run in the s River was cancelled over water quality KSL News correspondent inz deera joins us live from Paris do they have a backup plan inz if the S isn't clean enough good morning they do so you know when they first announced that they were going to be doing this so it's Triathlon and Open Water Swimming that they're hoping to hold in the S and when they first announced that there was of course a lot of skepticism organizers had insisted there was no backup plan that everything would be ready in time for the Olympics and then I think facing pressure from you know athletes from just the International Community they did unveil right before the beginning of the Olympics that there was a backup plan in place so when it comes to Triathlon which um is is set to start tomorrow on Tuesday um if the water quality isn't good enough they could either decide to delay the events or they could just do away with the swimming portion of the competition I think that's going to be very controversial if that happens because essentially transforms this the sport it becomes a totally different sport if you don't have swimming as part of triathlon uh and when it comes to Open Water Swimming they have unveiled kind of a backup venue it's outside of Paris um so I think athletes are are are very I mean those athletes are relieved to hear that um I know I had spoken to someone who's gonna participate in um the Open Water Swimming um Ivan pesovic who was on Team USA and he was telling me you know early on prior to the announcement of this backup plan that he'd been training his whole life for this and he was worried that he just wouldn't be able to compete because there was no backup plan in place so I'm sure he's theed to know that there is you know another option this is a tongue and cheek but maybe they could ship them over to Tahiti and put them on a cruise ship with the Surfers where we're laughing this morning about that whole Arrangement yeah it's amazing I mean it yeah so surfing is happening in Tahiti on the other side of the globe um and I mean I I would love to be there to to see the um atmosphere there uh they're so removed from everything but it seems to be going pretty well um yeah I tried to go they said no of course so but I'm in Paris that if you have have just another second you know what's getting a lot of playover here is that uh imitation of the Last Supper during the opening ceremonies people are really uh up in arms about that how's that playing in Paris yeah so interestingly we are hearing kind of what you're hearing I think over in the US um the conservatives here also you know kind of feel that was um inappropriate um the the Last Supper scene they point to other performances throughout the opening ceremonies that they say were off and just didn't have anything to do with the Olympics I do think overall though um we're not hearing of this as much and I think it's it's probably because people are I mean the French are so proud that the Olympics are being held in France they're very proud that the Paris mayor was able to pull off this opening ceremony on the S so I think that's probably overshadowing the um controversy here in France um but it's still being talked about yes all right and NZ thanks for your coverage this morning as always from Paris I did notice first thing this morning that the organizers there have issued turned out to be a brief apology but they did yesterday after all of the criticism of that one scene for why fun of someone's religious belief as part of an Olympic ceremony why why I mean I'm all for artistic expression and inclusion and all of that but why would you pick someone's cherished and sacred religious belief yeah uh the inclusion uh and diversity you know efforts will continue but to do it at the expense of someone particularly religious B on it is uncomfortable for many uh but they have apologized as of yesterday which is interesting not coming by the way from the producer of the show he said it had its intended um effect effect and that was probably to get people talking and they're certainly doing that but we'll continue to check in throughout these games with inz deera thanks for her time this morning in Paris on the in-depth at 15 to 45 traffic and weather together brought to you by Sinclair's Dino pay app save up to 20 cents per gallon and back to you Andy a man and so far so good as you head towards downtown on I15 no delays so we do have the ramp closure that's just reopened from fifth South to Southbound 15 they're still pulling some barrels off of fifth South but you can get on to South 15 now Heather we still have the closure of the ramp from us89 to go southbound Legacy Parkway now we can't tell if the ramp from I15 onto Legacy Parkway is closed I don't think it is I think you can use that but if you are usually taking us89 from weeburn Davis County and trying to trans transition onto Legacy you won't be able to do that quite yet everybody else though still moving at freeway speeds whether you're on I-15 Legacy Parkway or i84 Eric us 40 along the wasach bank looks good Northbound from heever City up to Park City but uh for Highway 40 just southeast of he City you got some uh slow downs in both directions there it looks like for about a mile stretch I15 in Utah County is cruising along at a normal Pace it's a 30-minute drive from Santaquin up to point of the Mountain don't half a pool length away from anybody and he was still short of a world record which surprised me with that kind of a lead on the field yeah and Katie Lei it's always good to see her and she she got bronze in the one I was watching yeah uh swimming uh always one of you know the biggest events for the US to actually bring some medals home and it's again with Simone vies looking great sticking it's right now and second of all because in many cases the audience needs to know there's no more important service that we can provide and I find it critically important to get more details to the audience as quickly as possible there's nothing more energizing than that for me not at all the most important thing we do is breaking news I am gratified that so many people listen to me every afternoon on KSL but what they don't know is that there are so many people behind the scenes making it happen checking on the traffic answering the phones making the calls talking to the newsmakers they're out in the street into the field to get the raw information and then putting it all together so that I can sit in front of a microphone and be a source of information every afternoon but there are so many people who make it happen that's what you don't know ride home with Jeff Kaplan weekdays 3 to 7 on KSL News radio I'm Andrew Saul Commissioner of Social Security I'm here to warn you about family of a 20-year-old woman hit and killed by a truck in mil Creek over the weekend are now asking people to help them find the driver I'm KSL News radio's Adam small second more us adults say they don't plan on having kids with one of the top reasons being finances third it's traffic and weather together State Street's got some busy traffic in the roadwork Zone through Murray but haven't seen any huge delays this morning in Salt Lake Davis or Utah counties and they finally did open the ramp from South 15 or from southbound 89 onto southbound Legacy so looks like everything everywhere should be open from the weekend closures I'm Andy fars within the KSL traffic center setting up a 3-day cooling Trend but nasty air I'm Matt Johnson right now 72 degrees at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios and time for our top National stories ABC News I'm Sheri Preston day three of the Olympics in Paris with reports of vandalism hitting multiple telecommunications lines across France the park fire in Northern California exploded over the weekend it's now bigger than the city of Los Angeles renewed fears of a wider war in the Middle East after a deadly strike on a soccer field in the Israeli controlled Golan Heights ABC's Jordana Miller with more from Jerusalem Hezbollah which has been firing on Northern Israel for months including the Golan Heights where there are some of the most important IDF bases it appears that uh Hezbollah rocket uh that they misfired one of these and it's slammed into a soccer field Saturday afternoon where a bunch of children and teenagers were just playing soccer the president of Venezuela Nicholas Maduro claiming to have won his third election opposition groups are doubting the legitimacy of the results this is ABC News New polls are showing that Democrats have a much better chance of keeping control of the office in November than they did before President Joe Biden dropped out joining us live is ABC News political analyst Steve Roberts what do you think of this match up Harris versus Trump well it's a lot different than Harris than Biden versus Trump I'll tell you that you know the single biggest uh asset that Trump had was Biden's age and vulnerability and uh cam Harris is 59 she's not 81 she's not stumbling up and downstairs to Air Force One um and the polls have showed that Democrats have been re-energized two weeks ago they were in despair there was a sense of Def gloom and defeatism that was just suffocating Democrats and now they've had a jolt of energy Democratic campaigns raised $200 million in the last week they claim that they've got 170,000 new volunteers our ABC ipsos poll out this morning uh Harris's favorable rating has jumped from 35 to 43 trumps has dropped from 40 to 36 and when you look at the national polls they're close to even now whereas two weeks ago Trump enjoyed an average of about a Sixpoint lead now that's all we can say today we can't say that's going to be true 99 days from now but the election has been reset and Democrats at least now feel that they have a chance whereas two weeks ago they did not I was surprised over the weekend at the pessimism of democratic strategist James Carville and his exact quote was that this giddy Elation is not going to be helpful much longer I wonder why well because you know there's the there's a feeling of uh such a sort of relief right now I think what he's saying is you know let's be prepared for another downturn let's not uh let's not be plunged into Gloom again uh when the honeymoon is over um Harris is far from an ideal candidate if Biden had been had withdrawn a year from now it would be a year ago it would have been a very open question whether Harris would be the nominee of the party uh in her own race for the nomination in 2020 she ran a dreadful campaign never even got close to the primaries she's never gotten great reviews as a vice president um and uh so and also uh while the age uh issue has shifted another basic issue has not shifted and Harris is going to have to defend the uh administration's record on two very damaging issues immigration and inflation and even though she's different she's part of that Administration and those are have been all along and very powerful arguments that the that Republicans can use against the Democrats it is true that she's going to be a far better um spokesman for an issue that works for Democrats which is abortion uh Biden as a believing Catholic was never very comfortable um really using that issue out front whereas uh this is all the polls show this is the issue that works most favorable for Democrats particularly since the dobs decision two years ago rolling back roie Wade so um she has some pluses and minuses he's not the ideal candidate uh but she also has the ability to talk about the future Joe Biden just by his age and by his experience was a candidate of the past and I've covered American politics this is the 16th presidential election I've covered and I can tell you that the candidate that seizes the sense of the future Barack Obama talking about about Hope and change Bill Clinton talking about the man from hope uh Ronald Reagan talking about mourning in America any candidate who seizes the future has a big Advantage Donald Trump's a very backward looking candidate keeps dwelling on the Grievances and complaints um and that's an opening all you can say this morning is it's an opening for Democrats that was not there with Biden at the top of the ticket fascinating Steve we always appreciate your expertise ABC News political analyst Steve Roberts with us on the in-depth at 15 and 45 I was just thinking if you can successfully launch a presidential campaign in 4 months voters would be in favor of a six-month campaign instead of a 2 and 1 half Year campaign we'll see how it goes and be following it of course every day for you here on KSL it is time again for a look at traffic and weather together brought in a row and June is usually one of the busiest months for Real Estate Utah Association of Realtors treasur Aaron drussell says we've gotten into a lot of trouble by pricing out the firsttime home buyers Utah has always been driven by the first-time home buyer like our housing Market's always been driven by that and when we price the first H home buyer out of the marketplace that kind of stagnates everything else across the board Dr also worries that everyone is trying to wait out the market but since Utah has a shortage of homes if mortgage rates drop prices will soar the National Association of home builders unveiled a new housing plan to lower home prices KS on news radio's Michael kit is live with more Michael Amanda these 10 points are meant to address a variety of issues and without spending all day going into them Utah's doing well in some of these like raising the next generation of Builders but could be doing better in others like providing opportunities for building if we if we can create a A system that allows for a little bit more flexibility in the in the types of housing we're able to delivered I think that's probably the most impactful thing that we President Biden is calling for major reforms to the Supreme Court including 18-year term limits for the justices and a binding code of conduct in ethics rules he's also pushing for a con you're listening to ABC News a Park City woman will be bringing home Olympic silver KSL TV's Alex Cabrero reports it wasn't the star Haley baton was hoping for in this race I knew I needed to have a good start here and I didn't I had a really bad start but medals are only awarded for how you finish and for the final 2/3 of this Olympic race baton was dominant I was really just so strong today and I knew this track like the back of my hand I got a concussion earlier this year at the pre-ride at this course that's right on this very course a year ago baton crashed leading to a concussion that kept her from competing at the World Championships which are an important qualifier to the Olympics she ended up with enough World Cup points to make it and she certainly made the most of it winning silver in a race that has been on her mind for years I visualized so much and I knew I could be on a Podium today for a Park City woman who grew up around winter Sports she is thankful for all the summer Mountain Trails where she fell in love with the sport and for all the support from family and friends who pushed her to be even better yeah Park city is my home and all the people that I raised with there and the whole cycling Community made this possible today so yeah it's crazy yeah Park city is well known for its Olympian skiers and snowboarders but you're going to have to add mountain biking to that list after baton success here today you know she is someone I have interviewed several times before but I have never seen her with a smile that big on her face and those tears in her eyes baton is bringing home a silver medal to Utah Bravo yeah good for her I'll tell you though uh the bikers those participating particularly in the mountain bike competition are very critical of the course conditions over there really yeah when they were making their test runs and and their warm-ups there's a lot of loose gravel toward the bottom of that run that's dangerous and uh they were hoping that after they had gone through the course several times it would kind of push the loose stuff off to the side so that there'd be a a more firm track through there but should that be groomed away well or is that part of the challenge well it you could say it's part of the challenge but if all of the participants are saying that it's dangerous and could lead to injury or you know put somebody out of the competition I think you'd want to make it a little bit easier for them all but uh she came through beautifully and Alex cabero is on it this morning on the in-depth at 15 to 45 multiple telecommunications links have been hit affecting fiber optics and fixed and mobile phone lines the park fire in Northern California burning through 5,000 Acres an hour it has grown to be the biggest in the state of California the presidential election is now less than a 100 days away Donald Trump and kamla Harris were both out on the campaign Trail over the weekend this is ABC News former president Donald Trump told his supporters this weekend that if they vote for him this election they won't have to do it anymore and in four years it'll be fixed ABC News correspondent Steven pornoy joins us live do we know what he meant by that Stephen well I think it's in the ear of the beholder but let's listen together as this is former president Trump in West Palm Beach on Saturday Christians get out and vote just this time you won't have to do it anymore four more years you know what it'll be fixed it'll be fine so look Democrats have pounced on this said that what Trump is saying is that it's the end of democracy there won't be any more elections just vote for Trump now and you won't have to vote again Republicans are saying clearly he wasn't serious number one number two we wish he wouldn't say it because by the way there are others who are Republicans who hope to win office one day and their voters uh should come out and vote for those people but uh it it's one of those things that uh that pops on the internet particularly and a lot of attention is focused on it here it is Monday morning we're still talking about it yeah I was thinking back on the whole idea of him being a dictator U that comment that he made one time he said look I'll only be a dictator on day one when I drill baby drill and shut down the border and yet that became he said he's going to be a dictator on the very first day oh and you're still hearing that from Democrats by the way it's in all of their messaging and listen you know it's it's a liability for Trump when he says things such as this because it plays directly into the argument that Democrats are making so Democrats are going to use it to uh encourage their supporters to come out and vote and what we've seen in the last week is tremendous enthusiasm for kamla Harris now at the top of the ticket on the Democratic side and increasingly there's scrutiny of JD Vance the former president's running mate and what he has said over the last several years about uh people who don't have children about how angry they are uh and lindsy Graham who's as you know a loyal supporter of Donald Trump said in an interview yesterday that while he appreciates what JD Vance is saying and and gets the point that JD Vance is trying to make about how government policy should uh favor families with children he also thinks it's bad politics to hurt people's feelings comparisons are being made to what Hillary Clinton said about the basket of deplorables uh the idea that it's not smart politics to be pointing figure fingers at the other side's voters and ascribing motivation and painting them in a negative light it's not exactly a way to win favor with those voters what about the the criticism that this is just the Donald Trump Playbook is to say more and more outrageous things every week so that he's at the top of the news every week that was sort of what he did in 2016 right well I think the challenge for Trump especially as he's trying to go after kamla Harris is the idea that it's it's difficult for him to break through and of all the things that Trump said at that these events over the weekend the one takeaway is this throwaway line at the end of his speech about how there won't be any need for voters to come out in the future uh and I think the the difficulty that Trump's going to face is as he trying to articulate the policy arguments it gets lost in some of the off-script off-hand things about uh you know you know bizarre things like not needing to vote in the future and somehow I don't think it's going to get any better over the next 100 days uh we'll be checking in with you Stephen from time to time thank you uh this morning ABC News correspondent Steven poroy on the in-depth at really cause any type of delay if you're southbound I15 traffic is filling in and it's getting pretty slow right now as you come from Beck Street into downtown it's actually due to a lot of police activity on the onramp from 11 from 10th North to head southbound I15 that on-ramp is shut down at the moment Eric and in the same area you've got a report of somebody being hit out Northbound I15 at lawsuit that's pitting a local Utah School District I think it's the is it the Jordan District MH against the five biggest social media platforms Facebook Instagram Snapchat Tik Tok and YouTube uh we're going to take a look at why they're suing what they want to accomplish and How likely it is that this case will actually go to trial that's a lot to take a bite of over the next couple of days they they have other members on their team they're the named PL if as I understand it but there are a lot of other school districts that are that are joining them in this effort so we'll continue to follow that and be listening on your way home this afternoon Jeff kaplan's Afternoon News starts every day Monday through Friday at 3:00 you know one thing that people agree on whether you leaning left or right is saving money oh for sure everybody wants to save money and we need to anymore I mean I think about the money that I save by shopping at NPS lets me not feel stressed lets me you know do something for my family once in a while that that maybe I would skip if I was watching every penny but when I go to NPS I can buy things groceries and clothes and electronics and household goods for so much less that I have money left over well it's a timely conversation right now because um anytime during the year obviously you have to have the Necessities but right now you have to have all that back to school right right clothing and uh supplies and all the things that kids need as they head back to school in just a couple of weeks isn't it yeah uh but NPS is going to give you that little leg up for you and your family on all things not just groceries but they have uh clothing accessories home decor clothes produce you name it they have it and uh Mark 20 to 70% off but then they put it on the shelf and when the next shipment comes in they need that shelf space they'll knock it down even more right because these are these are items that have been for whatever reason not delivered where they had been going so NPS buys them up by the truckload and then marks them down 20 to 70% and it's all named brand brand new stuff some treasure hunting is waiting for you at there burned well over 100 residential buildings the man accused of starting that fire will be in court today President Biden wrote an oped proposing some changes to the US Supreme Court and a constitutional amendment he's proposing a con stitutional amendment that would emphatically state that there is no immunity conferred upon someone who previously served as president by virtue of their service ABC Steven poroy says the president wants the court to have term limits put in place to end the service of a Supreme Court Justice after 18 years he also wants new ethics and conduct rules put in place for the court the Venezuelan president is claiming he won a third term in office but a lot of leaders many leaders around the world including US Secretary of State and Anthony blinkin are questioning the results we've seen the announcement just a short while ago by the Venezuelan electoral commission we have serious concerns that the result announced does not reflect the will or the votes of the Venezuelan people the United Socialist Party has been the only ruling political party in Venezuela since 2007 home sales have declined for the third month in a row and June is usually one of the busiest months for Real Estate Utah Association of F tour's Treasurer Aaron drussell says we've gotten into a lot of trouble by pricing out the firsttime home buyers Utah has always been driven by the first-time home buyer like our housing Market's always been driven by that and when we price the first-time home buyer out of the marketplace that kind of stagnates everything else across the board drussell worries that everyone is trying to wait out the market but since Utah has a shortage of homes if mortgage rates drop prices will SAR home builders are working on a 10-point plan with a goal of bringing down those uh home prices KSL News radio's Michael commit is live with that part of the story Michael Tim these plans come from the National Association of home builders they range from eliminating excessive regulations to promoting careers in buildings so the question is how is Utah doing with these Stacy young the government Affairs officer with Southern Utah Home Builders Association says one of Utah's biggest strengths here is keeping construction a popular career choice building is still a fairly popular career path uh here locally and and you know uh I think younger kids grow up seen seen it as a as a more viable uh career path young says different communities will be reacting differently to these in the other nine points so progress in home price across the Look emergency traffic on the 7:00 report Andy that's Southbound on I-15 yeah coming from Davis County into Salt Lake City they're going to force everybody off at the Rose Park 900 West 1,000 North it and traffic's already at a stop from Warm Springs Road down to this area and there not a lot it's not equipped to handle that much traffic going south on 900 West so your best bet is if you're coming going today uh is everyday is an exciting day in right but today we see the debut of the US Women's Basketball team um and women's basketball may be uh one of the most popular events in the United States these days with just the rise of Caitlyn Clark and now that she's on the team things like that but uh that's one of the big events out here that I'm going to be following today I'll tell you one of them that I got stuck not stuck I caught myself watching for more than I had anticipated is the women's rugby yesterday goodness gracious that's a rough sport that is so much fun to watch I am totally hooked I went to the men's rugby sevens and the women's rugby it's they're very fast games two seven minute halves uh it's quick scoring quick pace and a lot of um phys physical action out there on the foot or football field on the rugby pitch too we were excited to see Haley Batton win that silver medal are you following any other Utah connected athletes yeah there's can you believe it we have 36 Utah connected athletes in the summer games where to numbers like that double that at the Winter Games but usually not in the summer games tomorrow three Onre basketball begins which is it's it or something that's being affected have you been affected by any of that this morning I have not but I have heard that there have been some issues with maybe some phone phone links and phone lines luckily for me that's not been an issue yet but that's always a concern when we're trying to use uh you know in the world of communications we need the Internet we need our phones we need to be able to do this to be able to get our reports back to you guys in Utah and so it's something that we're definitely keeping a close tab close eyes on close tabs on the NBC crew out here that's helping us out they're doing a great job at making sure we still have things up and running though will you get to see any of the track and field events Sam that's one of the most high uh requested events in the Olympics from the media so it's kind of like you can put in your requests and then they'll approve who they want to go in there I would love to be in there because that's another event some of the distance runners in track and field are from Utah as well and so but that is just one of the the Premier Events of the Olympic Games right that's one that everyone wants to be at and cover and watch and so we'll see I'm hopeful that that I I'm one of the people who uh get the luck of the draw all right hopefully you dried out from your walk the other night with Carol huffmire on opening ceremonies oh oh my goodness that was a wet wet day I tell you what and and it was kind of cold too but hey we made it and now the sun's back out here in Paris it's warming up and feeling good yeah pay app save up to 20 cents per gallon it's just going to take a while Andy for them to push all four lanes of traffic down to that exit isn't it yeah and that's what they've been doing for the last while however they have just opened up some additional lanes and they're going to let the main flow continue so that will help things too right now looks like only the HOV lane is blocked on the left side and then they uh yeah so they're moving you all the way over to the left it's kind of a this is weird uh they move you to the left first and then they move you back over to the right so right now it's bumper to- bumper from 215 down to 600 North in Salt Lake and now there's a bunch of traffic on 25 from the Legacy merge all the way down to the I80 turnoff as people have been using that as an alternate Heather we just have our typical congestion areas in the Salt Lake Valley bang Highway mountain view corridor Northbound through West Valley City trying to get to 3500 South you'll also see a few breake lights on the 2011 freeway Eastbound in Magna over to 7200 West but most of the other roadways in good shape Eric you still got a city street crash 10 to two in Ogden Wall Street at 12th Street it looks like the Northbound and eastbound lanes are the ones most affected there I-15 in Utah County from Provo two point of the mountain that's 20-minute drive if you're getting in uh getting on in University Aven you don't have any crashes to hold you up when you choose Performance Automotive and bountiful you're choosing selection four locations Performance Ford Lincoln performance Honda members of a woman hit and killed by a car in Mill Creek over the weekend are asking for some help in locating the driver KSL News radio's Adam small is live with the latest Adam I man the police are still trying to locate whoever hit 20-year-old Lindsay vanderman when she stopped in this area where I'm at in mil Creek uh near 2300 East uh just north of 3000 South early Saturday morning she gets out you know bring Justice to our family from the little surveillance footage police have gotten they say this was either a silver or white pickup truck with a rack on the back they say the driver did stop initially but ended up speeding off uh they're now asking of course anyone with information or additional footage to come forward you can also find a go fundme for vaner man's funeral expenses on KSL newws radio.com live in mil Creek Adam small KSL Newsradio we do have some major backups on I-5 right now so let's check in early with Andy in the traffic center it is moving again right now though Andy yeah so the freeway was actually shut down for a little while and all traffic was being forced onto 900 West in Rose Park a road not designed to handle freeway traffic obviously uh Crews have worked around and now what they've got is all the lanes are open uh and they're not forcing you to the right anymore they're forcing you to the left uh we do have an HOV and a and a single uh travel Lane open so two instead of zero but the delays still stretch all the way back into Woods Cross and plus 215 is now backed up as well so it's going to be a headache unfortunately getting in Salt Lake I'm Andy Farnsworth in the KSL traffic center more us adults say they don't plan on having kids KSL News radio is Michael kit is live with more Michael Amanda the Pew Research Center says the number of adults who are going for a life without kids has risen to 47% since 2018 the study looks at childless adults over and under 50 years old and among the younger group they're citing personal choice and affordability for top reasons both groups say being childless has made it easier for them to put aside time for money or put aside time time and money for hobbies interests and the future but that said people in both groups have agreed that having children would make it easier to have someone care for them when they get older reporting live Michael kit KSL News radio KSL's top National stories this hour President Biden proposing three significant reforms to the US Supreme Court the president is urging Congress to pass binding enforcable ethics and conduct rules that would have the justices disclosing gifts and recusing themselves from cases in which they or their spouses have conflicts of interest ABC's Steven pornoy says the president wrote in an oped he wants the court to have term limits put in place to end the service of a Supreme Court Justice after 18 years he's proposing a constitutional amendment that would say there is no immunity conferred upon someone who previously served as president by virtue of their service new details are emerging about the attempted assassination against former president Trump ABC's Aaron kki has more the SWAT team members tell us that they did not have an open line of communication with the Secret Service they didn't have an open line of communication with the Pennsylvania State Police they had radios that talked to each other but not to the on scene commanders necessarily and so there never was a real mechanism in place from the start to transmit warnings that ultimately proved to be crucial the shooting eventually led to the resignation of secret service director Kimberly cheetle Team USA took some early wins in the pool over the weekend a big day in the pool Americans winning gold and silver for women's 100 m butterfly also winning gold and silver in men's 4x100 freestyle relay and 100 meter breast stroke Katie Lei is one step closer to becoming the most decorated female swimmer in Olympic history after taking Bronze in the 400 meter freestyle I'll tell you who was impressive yesterday was that French swimmer Leon Marshon he had like a half a pool lead on anybody I saw that I thought what in the world yeah still came in short of a world record but what a swim ABC's Andrew denbert there reporting from Paris a woman from Park city is bringing home a silver medal for Olympic mountain biking KSL TV's Alex Cabrero was there it wasn't the start Haley baton was hoping for in this race I knew I needed to have a good start here and I didn't I had a really bad start but medals are only awarded for how you finish and for the final 2/3 of this Olympic race baton was dominant I was really just so strong today and I knew this track like the back of my hand I got a concussion earlier this year at the pre-ride at this course baton crashed on that same course a year ago let's get that first look traffic now and check on that situation on I5 Andy if you're traveling south on I-15 into Salt Lake City you got backups from woodscross all the way down into about 600 North they have reopened the free wave instead of forcing everybody off at 900 West they're now forcing you into the HOV and left lane so it's still going to be a headache but at least traffic is moving now whereas it was basically stopped before now Legacy and 2115 are both slow as you use that to come out of Davis County instead I'm Andy Farnsworth in the KSL traffic center we've heard a lot about the problems caused by quag muscles but now there is concern over Zebra muscles two zebra muscle larvae known as villagers have been found in the Colorado River Colorado has been working closely at their locations where they have the detections and putting a lot of resources toward clean drain and dry potentially trying to eradicate those locations Lieutenant Bruce Johnson with the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources says Zebra muscles are very close cousins of the quag muscles that have been found in Lake Powell Don Brinkerhoff KSL News radio toilla county is invested with the Grasshoppers KSL News radio's Tammy Kikuchi reports there are at least 40 grasshoppers per square yard putting Gardens and crops in toilla in danger the little green Hoppers defoliate The Gardens and wipe out hayfields and anything green it's illegal to fly planes in the area so agricultural spray can't be applied the infestation began last year and ramped up this year grasshoppers are also inundating San Pete and boxelder counties and the enta Basin experts believe the grasshopper infestations are cyclical getting any better Andy no it is moving I mean uh for a while they were forcing all traffic off the freeway now they're just forcing it into the two left lanes but it's able to continue instead of having to exit into Rose Park but the slowdowns now start in Woods Cross near the 2600 South exit and they go uh and they just get worse the further south you go a lot of people are using uh Legacy Parkway instead and are backed up coming out of North Salt Lake down on to 215 might want to use Redwood Road instead that's at least at this point not jammed up too solid as you go through North Salt Lake or defin use Highway 89 to back street if you can to get into Salt Lake Heather not a lot of problems in the Salt Lake Valley you still have good speeds Northbound I-15 coming out of Utah County but we're starting to see a few brake lights as you approach Banger Highway and 114 South in Draper the mountain view corridor always has slow downs trying to get to 3500 South but the east and west side belt routes are traveling nicely Eric still got a city street accident in Ogden this is 12th Street of Wall Avenue it's the eastbound Lanes on 12 Street that are going to be most effective looks like only one lane is getting through there and it's going to take a while to clean that up if you're down in Utah County I15 Northbound southbound that's looking good get your lawn off to a good start with revive organic soil treatment greener grass using less water spread or spray revive organic soil Treatment available at your favorite Garden Center or revive.com Eric Butler in the KSL traffic that way through majority of this week one thing we are watching for as far as allergens are concerned is while fire smoke moving in from California it'll likely thicken up along the wasach front for your Tuesday from the KSL Weather Center I'm Matt Johnson and right now in Salt Lake City it is 72° we're hearing from the SWAT team in Pennsylvania that was on the scene when former president Trump was there and they are pointing the finger at um I think it's at the the federal well they just had zero communication between all of these entities we're going to get an in-depth report from Aaron kki in just a moment on this crazy actually right now though it's time for Jeff kaplan's minute of news speaking of crazy brought to you by the law offices of Jordan Wilcox we're back to talking about the scourge destroying our youth a subject too weird to wrap your head around too irresistible to the politicians the furries are back more than a year after the entire country was swamped by rumors of children in the schools dressing like and literally behaving like animals the neibo school district has concluded its investigation and determined that junior high school children there are not using litter boxes to do their business I right by with my tail in the air let's be clear at junior high schools everywhere a few kids wear cat ears some have dangling Tails often in violation of the dress code the motivation is unclear to get attention escapism it's hard to say and some of these kids do growl at classmates if you took off the ears it would just be called bullying but why would the media focus on that when they can talk about kids allegedly grooming each other with their tongues and using litter boxes in the restroom as described on Fox News 7 months ago where I live um in the Washington area I have a lot of Northern Virginia moms who have kids in school who have told me that there are schools who are are now having to put litter boxes in for kids to identify as cats nobody's found any such School District but the peak of furry madness came when Oklahoma representative JJ Humphrey proposed a law demanding that furries in the schools be picked up by animal control their parents would have to reclaim them at the pound I got cat class and I got cat but alas the animal control Bill failed to pass and the Neo School District did not succumb to furry fever a tail is a dress code viol and it'll be handled accordingly but if you're still worried about FES next time you take your kids to Disneyland don't buy the mouse ears they're the Gateway [Music] Drug's minute weekend are now asking people to help them find the driver I'm KSL News radio's Adam small second more us adults say they don't plan on having kids with one of the top reasons being finances third it's traffic and weather together South 15 still jammed up from the south end of Bountiful all the way down into Salt Lake City because of a crash near 1,000 North they're forcing everybody into the two left lanes Legacy and uh 215 are backed up and now we've got backups on Legacy as you come off I-15 in Farmington people aren't even going to risk going that far south on I-15 I'm Andy Farnsworth in the KSL traffic center setting up a three-day cooling Trend but nasty air I'm Matt Johnson and right now 73 degrees at the KSL common Spirit Health Studios let's go in depth now the Beaver County Pennsylvania SWAT team is speaking out for the first time blaming the assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump on a lack of planning and communication uh kbc's Aaron kerski reports we had a a text group between the local snipers that were on scene I had sent those pictures out to that group and advised them of what I noticed and what I'd seen what do you think is transpiring once you send in what you've sent in I assumed that there would be somebody coming out to uh you know speak with the this individual or you know find out what's going on so how do you know if Greg's concerns about crooks are being relayed properly we don't it's we have to assume that when he put that information out to command that command took that information and did something with it we don't know if they did none of the concerns appears to have reached members of Trump's Secret Service detail The Washington Post reports they've complained they were never made aware of the warnings in their first public comments about the assassination attempt members of the Beaver County SWAT team described to ABC News what they consider to be failures of planning and communication that would prove catastrophic we were supposed to get a face-to-face briefing with the Secret Service snipers um whenever they arrived and that never happened so I think that that was probably a pivotal point where I started thinking things were wrong because that never happened and we had no communication with the Secret Service you had no communication with the secret service at all on that Saturday no not until after the shooting I believe yeah and by then it was too [Applause] late the Secret Service declined to respond directly but told ABC News the agency is committed to better understanding what happened and is offering complete cooperation with ongoing investigations the suspect is directly above us members of the Beaver County SWAT team rushed to the shooters rooftop there's a ladder right here as seen in footage from Rich G and veto helmet camera thanks brother yep so we had access through that ladder got up onto the roof and as you're scrambling onto that roof you don't know for sure whether he's dead or alive or whether you'll encounter fire at that point no so what are you prepar are you prepared for a firefight at that point we're prepared for anything at that point cuz at this time we're unsure give me a solid perimeter get guys prepped to clear the building he encountered the shooter's blooded body some 400 ft from the stage clear the team believes it did everything it could have to thwart the attack but accepts its share of failure I think we all failed that day how so life is lost yeah people died and if there's anything that we could have done to stop that we could have we should have done we visited the SWAT team at its headquarters in Western Pennsylvania where they've been studying Maps satellite footage even their own crude replica of the rally site they're racing to learn everything they can because former president Trump has said he plans to hold another rally soon out there in Western Pennsylvania wow what a great report from Aaron kki on all sides of that but the fact that they had no communication between all of these enties is crazy uh and you wonder at that moment when a sniper has somebody that they know is a threat who gives the green light to go ahead and take a shot I or do they need a green light once shots are fired well why wait till the shots are fired when you got a guy there with a r uh anyway we'll continue to follow developments new information coming along on the in-depth there at 15 and 45 all right let's get a look at what sounds like still an emergency traffic situation brought to you by Sinclair's Dino pay app save up to 20 cents a gallon Andy's still that same spot huh Southbound 15 has only two left lanes open around 1,000 North in Salt Lake City this was the initial crash that caused the backup that now stretches all the way uh into Bountiful to the 500 South exit but there's a second crash that's happened in the backup now this is actually in North Salt Lake prior to the Main Street exit a little after Woods Cross the two right lanes are blocked so we've got I15 delayed from fifth South Bountiful to 600 North in Salt Lake City legacy's backed up and slow all through Bountiful in North Salt West Bountiful in North Salt Lake and now we've got delays on Legacy between I15 in Farmington and Parish Lane in Centerville Heather right now we just have a few breake lights showing up Northbound I-15 as you approach Banger Highway in the Draper area and again as you approach the I 215 South interchange in Murray other than that you still have a pretty good drive on the wests side belt the 2011 freeway though starting to slow down between 5600 West and the wests side belt as well as Mountain vew Corridor it's always backed up trying to get to 3500 South Eric and Foothill drives between 2115 and 600 North they're pretty slow as well between 500 South Bountiful and 215 Legacy just as slow coming down uh through North Salt Lake as well as with some extra delay at near Parish Lane and just as you come off I15 in Legacy in Farmington Heather we do have this crash on the 2011 freeway it's eastbound right near the wests side belt it's over on the right shoulder not really causing delays people are just slowing down a smidgen as they move out of the right lane uh to give them room to work and we do have a crash in Cottonwood Heights it's actually on 1300 East at Union Harris has only been in the race for a week already raising $200 million and her first big decision choosing a running mate Harris is considering about a dozen Democrats from Arizona Senator Mark Kelly to Illinois governor JB pritzer had a great conversation with her and I pledged to her that no matter what the outcome of this process uh that I'd be working hard for her to Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro and Kentucky Governor Andy Basher ABC's Rachel Scott California's Park fire now burning more than 5,000 acres per hour this is ABC News following breaking news for you this morning a bicycle Rider is dead in Ogden after police say he was hit by a dump truck while in a crosswalk in in Ogden KSL News radio's Adam small is live on the scene with the very latest what happened here Adam well Amanda police are are not able to share a ton of info at this point but what they have told us is that uh basically this Dr dump truck was driving north on Wall Avenue was looks like turning right to go eastbound here on 12th Street when it it sounds like the the driver did not see this man in his mid-30s on his bike they said the bike was in the crosswalk but again the the truck driver just didn't see him hit him and uh killed him right here on scene and still very active a lot of police officers out here and uh the man's body still has not been moved so they're they're definitely trying to be very thorough with this right now are there lights at that intersection uh from what I can see uh it's a little hard to tell where I am because I had to pull off basically into a a Subway parking lot just right next to it um I can't exactly tell but I know that it's a major crosswalk I mean Wall Avenue and twer here is a pretty big intersection um but so at the very least it is a very uh I would classify it as like a very big uh noticeable crosswalk it's one of the it's not one of those like little ones that can catch you off guard in the middle of a like you know on a block somewhere so he was the D the dump truck driver was turning East was the sun in his eyes that's a good question too I I know I I am trying to talk with police a little bit more um again they're they're not sharing a ton more other than what they've told us initially what happened here but I mean this time of morning I mean it's it's definitely a possibility I'll definitely be sure to look into that more but um also it could just be a case of and you know sometimes he just comes out of nowhere you don't see it but yeah we do know at least police have said like he he didn't notice the bicycle Rider coming through and and yeah that unfortunate situation up here today young man in his 30s what's it doing to any other traffic in that area right now well surprisingly for a fatal accident of any kind they usually have big impacts this one though is actually not nearly as bad as you'd think uh they do have lanes open in pretty much every direction of this intersection I drove up and got caught in maybe I don't know quarter mile of like slow andg go traffic but I mean once you're able to to get through that they basically have this uh like the the parking lot of there's a Maverick here as well as a cup Bop they've got both of these parking lots it looks like blocked off they might be letting people into Maverick but I mean other than that you you can you can get through pretty well do you happen to know Adam is the driver of the dump truck cooperating um I have not been told anything but I do know that the truck is still here on scene so I would assume that the the dri is here too talking with police but yeah the truck is here um so yeah that that's something I'll have to follow up on too as well but yeah it's still very active ongoing police say it's going to be at least probably another hour before they're they wrap things up here but well we'll definitely bring all all latest updates as are available okay thank you Adam Adam small reporting from the scene of a deadly crash this morning between a dump truck and a bicycle Rider in Ogden on the in-depth at 15 45 8:49 still an emergency traffic situation out there brought to you by sin Clair's Dino pay app save up to 20 cents a gallon Andy Tim South 15 no relief only the two left lanes open as you pass a crash between 1,000 North and 600 North in Salt Lake City uh the traffic backup from this goes all the way into Bountiful as it has for most of the morning since the crash happened Legacy delays continue to be at their worst right as you leave I-15 or Highway 89 in Farmington then it actually speeds up a bit stays heavy in Centerville but then the Stop and Go Creeps in from B this is on Legacy from Bountiful down to the 215 merge and it stays pretty slow all the way down past the airport Heather well the crash on Union at Park Avenue around 1300 East is in the final cleanup stages the tow truck is about ready to pull away and crews are just sweeping up the last of the the kitty litter that they put down to clean up all the oil and gas that spilled from that crash right in the intersection not a huge amount of backup in the area but you do still have Lane restrictions for a few more minutes and you have good speeds Northbound I-15 from point of the mountain into downtown Salt Lake and just a few brake lights remaining on the 2011 freeway Eastbound coming out of Magna over to I-15 Eric the left lane blocked off eastbound I 80 this is a crash just past the East uh East Canyon exit uh as you head up toward Ward Lamb's Canyon uh so you got a couple Lanes going through but it's very slow and gradually the delays are stretching back towards the Cory though it's not there yet TOA County Drivers just a little bit of bunching up Northbound sr36 at lak point no big problems this morning in Utah Utah County Drivers the biggest problem is eastbound 2100 North from Redwood Road over to I-15 Eric Butler and the KSL traffic center KSL 7-day forecast
