kick off to the regular season fast approaching the Steelers rounding out their preseason schedule on Saturday and still no quarterback named postgame like Tomlin said he hopes to name a quarterback near the end of the work week be that as it may Russell Wilson Justin Fields both going to be integral pieces in this team success this season Emory hunt and Ryan Wilson aboard to EXP lore gentlemen it's been an interesting off season and interesting preseason here for the Steelers you bring on Russell Wilson you acquire Justin Fields you create competition in that room but nobody's one out at least in the public eye just yet is there a right answer to the question that Still Remains em yes for me it's Justin fields and it's a bigger answer because it's about money hey we got to find out we got this young guy for the future we got to let them play we saw enough in practice saw enough in preseason but let's throw him out there in a real game to see if this is the guy that can sink or swim we got a nice ecosystem around him if we can find out that he's the guy moving forward we can get ahead of the curve pay him a nice handsome deal not a long-term six-year contract but something that can get him get you through 2026 or 2027 and then move forward with there so I think Fields is the right answer financially and football-wise I don't hate to thinking Emory and I was uh on board with trading for Justin Fields long before the Russ Wilson situation present itself but I don't think he's availed himself particularly great over the the snaps he was able to get in preseason because Russ was hurt he struggled holding on to the football in terms of the snaps and I know there's blame to go around on both sides but you still have to get the snap as the quarterback uh he didn't throw the ball on time which was something that plagued him during his time in Chicago and the other most important thing is that Mike Tomlin made it clear from day one that Russ Wilson's going to be the guy oddly enough he didn't come out and say it uh in the the hours that just preceded us talking here but I think at the end of the day Russ is going to be the starter and if you're looking for reasons that it might even be uh more solidified week one they're at Atlanta Arthur Smith of Revenge game week two they're at Denver and I don't think you start Justin fields at Denver if you have something to prove for your Russ Wilson now if Russ Wilson goes there in L and AA week two we can revisit the emry conversation where Justin Fields might might indeed find himself in the lineup sooner rather than later that's just it no matter who starts this season both of these guys likely to see time in that offense and Justin Fields obviously has the financial and the annual Advantage here on Russell Wilson but if I am the deciding vote between you two gentlemen I I think it's got to be Russ off the bat just because of who this team wants to be from an identity standpoint as an offense plotting win some games 1917 see where you stand but you make a great point the explosiveness of Justin Fields adds a wrinkle to this offense that they do not have with the other quarterback let's keep the theme of quarterback going here we saw Bryce young for the first time this preseason gentlemen and we saw Bryce young that we didn't see a lot of last year he was sharp he was on time he orchestrated a touchdown Drive what jumped off the tape at you from Young here on Saturday well a lot of what we saw today you saw in spurts last year on the throws that are going outside the numbers like the corner routes he's able to hit those with ease he's able to drop that in the bucket those are his his places where he's had success here we see on the video him scrambling out keeping his eyes downfield and finding receivers downfield what I would like to see him do more of you see him attacking the perimeter but I like to see him use his L board to pick up those cheap yards on ground to really extend the drive or make it second and five or whatnot but him throwing on the move is where he thrived at Alabama those second reaction plays is where he had success as a crimson tit end showed some signs of success as a rookie just want to see it more consistently and Canalis I think it's the guy to get it out of him emry the last time either me or you weighed with Bryce young ways now we were in fourth grade I do not want him running anywhere for any reason throw the ball throw it often throw it early and you did talk about that he did throw the ball in time he can throw a platform and the play to the left rolling left that he completed Deontay Johnson there's something we also didn't see last year guys getting open Adam Thelen struggled to get open Jonathan Mingo struggled to get open they have Playmakers now jaavan Sanders the tit end they drafted out of Texas he made some plays today Deontay Johnson as I just mentioned was able to get open and I think those are the differences and the other big difference guys and and this is something that because I watched every single St last year Bryce because we talked about him with the first pick podcast this year his footwork looks a lot better yes he went up against second and third teamers in Buffalo but it's a start and it's a start in the right direction and at 's point I think Dave Canales has given him something he didn't have last year and that appears to be confidence and guys who can get open after the snap in this household we measure by wins and losses not pounds I would just like to offer that to Ryan Wilson it it reminds me now as I'm thinking through it it reminds me a lot of Florida State's offense with the Charlie Ward guys a fast break offense get keep these guys on the move and that's where they can have the success I think BR shank is going to be fine this year as long as you have that movement off what we saw Baker Mayfield thriving last year with Tampa Bay somewhat similar to the movement both pre- snap and in structure of a Kyle Shanahan offense that's what we expected Trey Lance to project into when he was drafted as high as he was but the NFL timeline waits for no one and that is a franchise that has headed a different direction I'm not sure the Dallas Cowboys are quickly heading the direction of tre Lance but we got to try and make sense of this night 413 total yards two touchdowns and five interceptions I mean they ran an unnumbered amount of like this offense Ran So Many plays and could not punctuate drives and it was all under the tutelage of Trey Lance I I guess just simply put Ryan I'm going to come back to here what does the NFL future of Trey lance look to that might be I mean an unanswerable question right now but you saw what makes him great and you saw what's keeping them off of a football field right now yeah the the near-term future is he's going to make this team because he's guaranteed $5 million and Jerry Jones basically said as much in recent days that he's not going to cut Trey Lance Tre Lance will be qb3 on this team however behind Cooper rush and of course Dak Prescott but the larger story is you know don't blame the guy cashing the checks blame the guy writing the checks and that comes back to Jerry Jones who almost a year ago to this day traded a fourth round pick for Trey Lance and you talked about the optimism with the athleticism and being the number three overall pick in years past and that's Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch who made that decision uh the thing for me taking the overarching pitcher some who covers the draft as well is that finding a quarterback is incredibly difficult and we know coming out of North Dakota State or South Dakota State excuse me he took the year off because their season was canceled because of covid we knew about the athleticism the arm strength Trey hadn't played a ton of football and he's done some good things athletically but he still struggles to see open receivers he still struggles to throw the ball on time and the real question Joe and emry is what happens after this year in terms of what Tre Lance's NFL future looks like because he's not going to get opportuni to take a ton of snaps this year and knowing that I don't know how he's going to grow as a player to eventually become a star in the league at least in the near term this is the moment I've been waiting for guys because if anybody can do this it's the Dallas Cowboys because they have precedents already this is why a place like the UFL in these spring leagues are important Trey Lance needs to play football we saw this with Jeff Garcia going up to Canada coming back down to San Francisco and having a great career we've seen this now with kavante Turpin played the European League of football then he played in the UFL and now he's over there as an allpro in Dallas Brandon arry so I feel like Trey Lance needs to play this is where a spring League or a spring developmental League by the NFL would do him wonders because they let him go out there and throw today and if you look at those interceptions those are eye related picks this is a situation where it wasn't where a guy tipped the ball and it fell in the wrong hands they were just studying where he was looking and they just got in the way and picked the ball off so this is a guy that hadn't had a lot of experience like Ryan talked about in college and this is why he needs to continue to play but he's not going to do that in Dallas behind Prescott Ryan I need you to put me on the schedule for with the first pick cuz I need to speak some truth to power we got to stop ignoring snap count in college and height those are two things that matter when you're trying to find the future quarterback of your franchise he did not check the box as you referred to with that Collegiate snap count let's get to some winners and losers coming out of Saturday we saw a lot of football not a ton of starters on field Emory who walks away your biggest winner from Saturday Jaren Hall a quarterback from BYU I love what he did the previous week four five two touchdown passes right so he was hell you fishing this week two more touchdown passes threw a lot more passes and so you like a guy that came into the game last season in a regular season got his first start got hurt then we had the Josh dos experience and then now he has to find a way to get back onto the field they drafted their franchise quarterback and JJ McCarthy so all he has is these preseason games and he took full advantage the last two weeks looking like the quarterback we saw from him at BYU so I thought he did a great job the last two weeks and today threw two touchdown passes as well jiren Hall is a great choice and he's lucky to make the team because J.J McCarthy is out for the season that allowed him to sneak in his qb3 and to 's point he took advantage of it I loved him coming out of by BYU struggle last season but props to him for taking the opportunity I'm going to go back to the well and and Joe you and I talked about this a lot uh I love Bryce young more than Bryce Young's family so I am proud of the way he played today he came out there completed the passes he needed to complete he looked confident in this new offense and I know he's under side and I get that he's short but I think he has a chance to to to turn some heads this year I'm not going to say he's going to be the next com to Patrick Mahomes but it's a good start there's a long road ahead yes he played against a bunch of backups I'm going to take it as a win for now we'll see how the season unfolds but uh credit to Bryce young for at least getting off to a good start for 2024 yeah whether you're the first overall pick or a third Stringer this league time it again proves you better be two or three deep there at the quarterback position we saw the Tommy cutlets the Jake brownings the AFF for mention dos it's it's always an experience and we'll see which teams are touched most closely by that injury bug at the quarterback position it often rules a couple of these teams out let's rule somebody out tonight too Your Biggest Loser Emory oh we talked about him a lot already in Trey Lance you can't throw five interceptions in this era of social media those five interceptions will turn 20 interceptions by the end of the week so if you're trade Lance and you look at the the way these interceptions were thrown again your eyes tell you everything and these Defenders were just locking in on where he was was looking at to throw the football and just jumped in the passing leg and took it away and anytime we know if you a defensive guy you're on defense for a reason because you can't catch if you're catching interceptions to the twoe of five of them think about how bad those passes are being thrown to where Defenders can catch them so yes he's The Biggest Loser tonight those five guys who swore they could have been a receiver exactly Ryan Wilson you're Biggest Loser yeah Trey Lance was low hanging fruit and I think we piled on on him enough North Dakota state by the way I had an insult the injury saying South Dakota state so my apologies my apologies there I'm going to go with a guy who didn't see the field tonight or the previous two weeks and we won't see him until week one which will be 300 days after he last played a game Deshawn Watson and they're in Seattle 1 p.m. Eastern start we saw jamus wison who was a capable backup and uh I would argue that emry has a right to love jamus because jamus is legit and a lot of fun to watch uh DTR is the back up there as well but listen this team is only going to go as far as deshun Watson can take them I say that fully knowing that Joe Flaco took this team to the playoffs last year but Joe Flaco is now in Indianapolis so he needs to be playing like one of the top five quarterbacks because that's what his salary says he's worth we have yet not seen that because of injuries and again there was conversations he would play this uh tonight Kevin sansy said as much in recent days but shoulder injury popped up again so that's a huge concern for me it feels like the fact that he's not going to be on the field at all this preseason is very concerning for a Browns team that's in an incredibly tough division in the AFC North and that's a demerit on me for not mentioning Joe flacka when trotting out those mercenary quarterbacks from a year ago Ryan Wilson emyy hunt we appreciate you guys as always as we wrap up Saturday here but we haven't wrapped up the final week of preseason just yet we got action coming your way on Sunday CBS Paramount plus beginning 4:30 Eastern Arizona Cardinal and Denver Broncos getting their last look no bow Knicks in this one but plenty of players living right on that cut line going to figure it all out on Sunday
