‘Girly pop summer’: Women dominate at the 2024 MTV VMAs

cha roome wowed the crowd at the VMAs last night also winning Best New Artist in what was a night dominated by female talent for a breakdown I am joined by the host of iHeart Radio Shannon Burns Shannon good morning great to see you good morning so let's start with Chapel rone to many this was expected uh can I get your reaction to her popularity and to her award yeah over the past few months we've really seen a med yic rise when it comes to chapelon and she really Embraces the definition of that because she has just Skyrocket in into Fame uh just in this past year we're seeing her name and we're seeing performances of hers everywhere and her music is everywhere every celebrity Beyonce endorsed her recently so it's been really great to see her her do this rise with such Grace and uh do her very first award show performance last night there's so many huge names that we recognize today uh that have done their first performance at the BM that's so memorable so we knew that she would really go big when it came to this performance because she wanted it to be one that's remembered as well and then she also won best new artists yeah yeah what did you make of of her performance what kind of message do you think she was trying to send yeah as soon as she was on the red carpet people were pointing out references to Joan of Arc and uh Ron of Arc started trending online so it just seemed like that is what she was going for throughout this whole performance with the different um costumes that she was in and her performance that she gave and the fact that she just won Best New Artist I think is just um yeah the cherry on top of her her incredible year so far well speaking of incredible we have to talk about Taylor Swift winning huge last night winning best video for the third year in a row and I believe she is just slightly behind Beyonce when it comes to the number of awards uh that she has taken talk to us about what we're seeing and hearing in this moment that Taylor Swift finds herself in yeah so she was up for a ton of bmas last night as she typically is because she is always comfy out new music of course she's the biggest artist on the planet right now and she ended up going home with seven Awards last night it was really nice too to to see first of all that she she showed up to the bmas I wasn't totally sure if she was going to leading up to it uh but she was there she shared a lot of love for her boyfriend Travis so we got to see a rare kind of public reference to him from her as she thanked him for everything he did and also a lot of love to post Malone who she collaborated with with fortnite which won some awards so it was really great to see her share the love with so many other people and yeah really just take those seven Awards of the night yeah and she paid tribute to the victims of the 911 attacks that happened 23 years ago in New York and she also encouraged people to vote after that key indorsement that she gave to Harris the night before so women seem to be dominating the awards this year how do you feel seeing all of these women just shine yeah I really feel like it is about time we've seen men dominate years in the past so it's really amazing just to see that um people have been calling it like a girly pop summer because every top song The the Billboard top 10 has been filled with women for the past couple months so it's incredible just to see them uh and their uniqueness at at the VMAs and it's really sweet too because you can see a lot of people pay tribute to the female artists that have come before them Sabrina Carpenter did a little nod to um to Madonna with her outfit and also Britney Spears with her performance and it's just it's really cool just to to see them be so strong in what they do um yeah and just and kill it it's incredible overall do you think that anyone uh was left out last night that didn't win that should have maybe oh that's a great question I think well I was just glad to see CH Ron when Best New Artist I thought that if she doesn't win in that category then we need to re-evaluate how this voting system is done um but it was great to just see so many people honored in so many ways like Lisa from blackpink she ended up taking home an award which was um historic for her and just yeah to see Taylor Swift win in all those categories was really really great and I think they they all got to share the stage equally which was really sweet as well so I'm just glad that we're seeing all these women support other women yeah and we we also have to Shout Out Sabrina Carpenter we've been showing video of her out throughout this conversation um great to talk with you today Shannon Burns is the host of iHeart Radio thank you so much
