former Canadian fashion Mogul Peter nyard was sentenced to 11 years in prison by a Toronto court on Monday for sexually assaulting Four Women Justice Robert Goldstein who presided over the case condemned niggard as a sexual predator who showed no remorse or empathy for his victims the assaults took place at nygard's company offices with one of the victims being just 16 years old at the time of the attack the judge highlighted this as one of several aggravating factors in the case nyard who was convicted in November 2023 on four counts of sexual assault has faced numerous allegations of sexual misconduct across several jurisdictions though he was acquitted of a fifth count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement in this trial he is still facing additional charges related to sexual assault and sex trafficking in Montreal Winnipeg and the United States charges in this case stemmed from incidents occurring ing between the 1980s and mid 2000s during the trial five women who cannot be named due to a publication ban testified that they had been lured to nygard's Toronto business headquarters under false pretenses including job interviews and business tours in each instance the encounters ended with nyard assaulting them in a private bedroom suite at the office the testimony painted a disturbing pattern of abuse with many victims describing eerily similar circumstances such as meeting niggard at airports on planes or in nightclubs and later receiving invitations to visit his office where the assaults took place nygard's defense team pointing to his Advanced age and poor health argued for a six-year sentence but the crown had sought a harsher penalty of 15 years ultimately the judge dismissed the defense's request for leniency stating that nygard's health concerns did not justify a lighter sentence Justice Goldstein suggested that nyard had exaggerated his health problems and emphasized that his position of power and wealth made his crimes particularly egregious nyard will be eligible for parole in 2 years and with credit for time served he will spend a little under seven years behind bars niggard once a prominent figure in the fashion industry founded his company niggard International in Winnipeg in 1967 which went on to produce women's clothing under various brand names however his Empire began to crumble following a series of Investigations and legal actions related to sexual misconduct in 2020 his offices were raided by the FBI and New York police and his company has since filed for bankruptcy the former fashion executive was arrested in Winnipeg in 2020 under the extradition act due to charges in New York including sex trafficking and racketeering niggard has denied all allegations against him but faces ongoing legal battles in Canada and the US regarding numerous other accusations of sexual assault and and trafficking in May Manitoba's highest court dismissed nygard's application for a judicial review of his extradition order reinforcing that he is to be held accountable for his crimes as Justice Goldstein put it during sentencing nygard's Fall From Grace represents a Canadian success story gone very [Music] wrong e
