call the meeting to order at six o'clock excuse me Dr Stevens would you like to take appends sure Mrs whiteed I'm here Mr White here Mrs Soka is absent miss donelly here and Mr Daniels here we all stand to the flag of the United States of America to the for it stands Nation God indivisible liy and justice for all do we have any public comments from the floor no do we have any public comments we did not okay we'll look to Miss Webster and Miss McGrath for the um summer school P presentation we just gonna move this I don't even okay hi I just want to give a quick recap about what occurred this summer in the water bit City School District so as you know we have the extra program Grant it's the extended school day um it in addition to providing um support for students during the summer months it also provides before and after programs for our students as well during the school year so typically about 35 students in each grade level are invited to take part in summer programming K through uh 8 in this year we had 21 students in kindergarten um you can certainly read that I don't want to read that to you um some of the classes were a little smaller than we would have liked some some of the classes God bless you students had signed up for summer programming and they didn't attend for whatever reason um we did call to see if we could backfill those positions we were unable to um and then when we get into the high school we had quite a few students participate in Summer Academy or credit recovery getting ready for region at the high school level and then of course our travel program which I'll show you a clip of what they experienced the summer had 27 students with a total of 349 students partaking in Summer Academy at the elementary level the focus is on math and um Ela instruction there really is such a thing as summer slide there is a regression that can occur during the summer students are kept up toate with uh Reading Writing math work so this is a great opportunity for our students to continue learning for those summer months it does give them about a 3 week break before school starts some of the activities that students were working on this was Miss Lance's fourth grade class they um read something about mammals and then they did a diagram they wrote about it they did a craft activity so it's not just you know was this your class or did I li um I mean you can certainly speak to it but it's not just you know sitting and lecturing there's Hands-On activities there's group work uh students are very engaged I have this was um our kindergarten class at the beginning of kindergarten students were they're coming from upk and while some of them had some experience with saying the Pledge not all of them were able and Miss Belle and Miss bakus worked so hard at the beginning of the summer the the students were struggling I was there the first day and you know it was kind of all over the place but by the end on the last day Miss B recorded this and they all knew exactly what to do so I'm just going to play a couple seconds the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands indivisible go so you can see that they learned um how to be articulate how to have voice uh had a stand in line there were lots of things going on besides just that reading and math and then our summer travel program students in seventh eth uh grade they have the opportunity to travel and explore different places um usually historical in nature around the capital region and actually this year they traveled outside the capital region to FDR in Ry back New York I believe it is so a little further South Park where is the hi Park thank you um and the I just want to show this it is five minutes long but I'll I'll kind of speed through it but this was a really great opportunity for our students to see and experience things that they might not otherwise so so two parks in West sale Lake not only do they see the animals they also and they learn how to [Music] Pizza I really enjoy that aspect of learning how to take animals [Music] we were talking about the FD home [Music] [Music] and but they were astonished by all the people that had visited his home um other Pres [Music] the battlef is all always a fan favorite [Music] [Applause] [Music] students that [Music] solders really great questions fun [Music] [Applause] [Music] this was one of the science lessons learning the [Music] [Music] differ identifying different tyes of fish [Music] you know why is it so cold underground another great science lesson of course sifting the different rocks and then we have time for a little fun Mees at the end of the summer at [Music] spare so I just want to share with you that little recap um you know obviously we had some great learning opportunities but students also were able to engage in um Encore we this year we offered music we offered uh PE and we offered art and then everybody had playground time as well so good times had by all thanks Kell um so Kelly just did a brief overview of four different programs that were happenening at the same time and the extended school year program um is our fifth program so people think things slow down over the summer not in water Vite we were so busy um so extended school year is for students with disabilities who their disability requires 12 month programming so we served about 41 students across five special classes um and the goal is to maintain their skills in reading and math but we also like to have a little fun and give them some social emotional um learning as well as experiences in the community so we went on field trips every Friday so the first field trip we take uh we walk to Brotherhood Park and they get to play they had ice cream they went under the the sprinklers we went to the water valite city pool twice the students absolutely loved it um the splash pad is topnotch I don't know if you guys have ever seen it but it's better than traveling anywhere so we took everyone to the pool um and we also went to Sky Zone the trampoline park in Clifton Park and the students they just had a blast um I we also one Friday we um bust them up to the high school auditorium which we turned into a theater and we served popcorn and candy and it gets really darken there and the students um watched uh Despicable Me So they loved that then we went bowling one Friday and we had an inservice presentation from Mrs beam's husband we made butter in the cafeteria so they learned a little bit about that and then we also did a lot of activities surrounding the Olympics so a lot of fun a lot of learning um and it was it was a great summer thank you very much Dr Stevens sure uh first off we've had a successful start to the 24 25 school year a great first two days of superintendent conference uh with um astounding Presence by staff welcoming students in a variety of orientations and and Locker setup and getting schedules uh so hopefully it was uh two days that set everybody off on the right foot because they they came last Thursday and they've been coming ever since so we are excited to kick off the school year and um I will before I go through my list I'm gonna turn it over to Mr Gro and Miss Williams to kind of share their takeaways of the last couple days and how the the year has kind of started out at the elementary building I would say that the superintendent day really set the plate uh the last two years having two days has given the staff an opportunity to not only come into the building but get their classroom set up get the building set up I can say that this is my third year being down there the building looked awesome uh the classrooms look great and I can't express um just the the excitement and the way that parents are you know really come into the building and get acclimated um they're super appreciative um you know the years past I've always had the parent that kind of Corners me you know asking a lot of questions not a one every parent that walked past me in the hallway had nothing but you know positive things this side um and the thing I'd like to note is that as you all know we have so many new staff in our in our district um that was a concern of mine but we had some really great hires um a lot of real positive excitement in the building uh and it's already carried over the first four days uh even my predecessor I can't believe that I cherish these words you said there the best opening day very smooth the loop the buses the whole nine yards but that has everything to do with just the teachers I mean the veteran leadership and engulfing those new people we also had six new six teachers in different positions so we had so many moving Parts but to to see the way these uh first four days kind of unfolded uh is nothing short of just being super proud of the staff in the community that we have down to Elementary building awesome so here at the Junior Senior High School um I want to Echo everything that Mr bro had shared goes the same up here for sixth grade orientation I think we pretty much had almost every student come in that day to meet their teachers get their schedules put their things in their lockers and I think it gave them a real sense of calmness when they were able to start on Thursday with everybody else so that was a huge success um we are hitting the ground running with yand again it is a success we are are seeing continuing to see more eyes up hearing more conversations the hallways are loud um and that's exactly what we were looking for is to increase that social opportunity um as well as decreasing the distractions in the classrooms and that is still working beautifully um I've been down to the Evolve program um we now have 24 students down there um it was it was a rough transition for some of them they I think they got scared but as they're getting into it you can tell that they are okay yes this is the place I need to be I I was chosen for this for a reason and they're excited Miss mcke spoke about the first activity that they did down there doing a journal about you know why they were there and what they want to set as their goals and she said their responses were just amazing par they wrote paragraphs um so we're already starting to see a lot of the success of the evolved program and um just excited to see where we go this year here with being full of staff and uh having all these great new teachers and students but also a great team to work with perfect thanks speaking of speaking of journals uh I am one for giving away swag so uh all of the staff when they came this year I got a little notebook so that they can take notes they can Journal themselves uh a little a little self-help but also a little organization so uh one of these is each of your PL settings for you to for you to use as well um I I need to give a big thank you to Mr Mento as well as all the administrators who supported the welcome back celebration uh we had close to 900 participants families uh students uh parents community members come in through the door uh we have well over a hundred staff members that were there volunteering and that doesn't count all the exhibitors the the organizations that came to support and set up a table it was a a great time um and I can't I can't think of a better way to kick off the new the new school year uh lots of our new staff all mentioned um if you haven't heard me say this we have 45 new staff members so it's a lot uh but everybody who was there uh made a comment like they've never seen something like this that it was it was a great it was just a great fun exciting way to to say welcome back uh couple things that are on the horizon uh PTA our first PTA meeting this new school year is tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. at the elementary school uh everyone is invited to that our open house for the Junior Senior High School is next Thursday the 19th uh that will be here uh our first home football game where we will honor the youth uh youth football program will be on the 20th next SE uh Friday night and then the following week September 25th and 26th will be the elementary school upk through 2 grade will be the first night and then three through five will be will be the second night so again you're welcome to any and all of those activities um on the agenda tonight you will see the district's uh comprehensive Improvement plan as well as the um uh School comprehensive educational plan for our accountability data for the upcoming school year uh I earlier to I sent some more survey data for all of you to take a look at and you know by all means let me know if you have questions and in the coming months we will present more of our assessment data uh it's currently in bargoed and as soon as it becomes you know released we'll make sure that we we share it with the board during during one of our our meetings uh and the only other two things for me is one just a big thank you to all of the uh community that supported the start of the school year at end of your agenda I think that you'll have like nine nine or 10 different thank yous so just a a big thank you to all of them for supporting our students with school supplies and uh furniture and crops and socks uh we we have started the school year off strong and we thank the community for all of their support and lastly is just a thank you to the city and the WPD for their commitment to our SRO program that is now a five day week program started the first day of school uh the the police chief is very excited to kick the year off and hold to that commitment of five days moving throughout the school year I think that's it okay moving on to committee reports I'll answer both ter isn't here but I have nothing from the audit committee or the policy committee at this time so item six public hearing the code of conduct has been available for public review on the district website for over 30 days during this time the public has been welcome to submit any comments to the email listed below B did we get any comments we did okay um for discussion does anybody have anything they'd like to say no I just want to Echo Dr uh Stevens with the um the welcome back Festival it was awesome I was there for I didn't plan on it but I was there working for the whole time with the um Civic Center and it was great there was so many people there was so crowded I didn't get to see a lot of you but I know you were there I heard so it was good it was clst to like Dr Stephenson close to it with everybody a thousand people easily so the only other thing I wanted to say I just wanted to thank everybody that volunteered too everybody it was fantastic um the only other thing I wanted to say from board committee is just I'd like to take a moment for um to extend our thoughts and prayers to the people involved in the shooting in appalache so with that I would like to uh ask for a consent agenda on items 1 through 60 that I have a motion B motion Brian could I have a second second okay anything on the motion all in favor anyone opposed hearing none the motion has passed um the the only other thing I would like to say is on behalf of the board I would also like to thank the water B City and the city police department for extending the SRO program they're now five days a week and I think it's um vital that we do have an officer on campus five days a week just to handle anything that comes up and even just to quell nervous students so to speak so that being said I'd like to yeah recommend executive session um to discuss matters related to pending litigation and the employment history of a particular person could I get a motion motion could I get a second I'll second okay anything on the motion all in favor anyone oppos none motion is passed we'll now go into ex s thank you all
