National Cabinet meets on domestic violence + Greens set to win first ever NT seat | ABC News

Federal government puts states and territories on notice as National Cabinet meets on domestic violence. the federal government is expected to read the riot act to Premier and chief ministers at National cabinet today calling on them to step up their efforts to tackle domestic sexual and Family Violence almost all states and territories are falling well behind on their commitments to hire 500 front-line workers to help tackle the crisis it is sure to be a tense conversation as the leaders meet this morning with the Commonwealth pushing states to match more than $350 million in funding lots to talk about let's go straight to our political reporter Evelyn Manfield at Parliament House Evelyn good morning a big day ahead what's expected from the meeting the federal government says it's expecting a substantial package to come out of this National cabinet meeting in Cambra today the ABC understands that it'll be at least $351 million put forward by the federal government they want these states and territories to match that collectively so another $351 millionar from the states and territories now of course this is all subject to what actually happened at the national cabinet meeting today and what agreements they make but we do understand that it'll be an extension of Frontline services that are already offered legal services are certainly hoping that they can get some more money out of this National cabinet today because they tell us that they're just inundated with women and children seeking help and they just don't have the resourcing to keep up so look the crisis that is men's violence against women will be the focus of this meeting it follows a meeting of national cabinet in May which of course happened after rallies around the country which were in response to the shocking rise in women being killed at the hands of men and following that may meeting there was a rapid review set up so we can expect that leaders will be reflecting on some of those recommendations today they included things like a ban on gambling advertising of course Very topical here in Parliament House more restrictions around the time frames and sale of alcohol more funding for crisis accommodation and also youth specific services so that uh children who are facing family and domestic violence can get sort of tailored help as well but really those experts just want this issue or this crisis to remain really front and center for leaders across the country there'll also be a focus Evelyn on Frontline service Staffing as well yeah that's right so there is a promise there to have 500 of these Frontline workers funded by the federal government uh by 2026 there was an interim Target of around 350 by June this year that's been and gone and at the moment there are just under 200 of those workers in place across the country uh most of the states are falling behind you look at Queensland 51 of 91 of those full-time positions New South Wales 30 of 118 so we're hearing from the federal government they're really really trying to put that pressure on the States they're saying we've given you the money now you really need to get those workers so we can help to address this crisis okay Evelyn thank you well the greens are set to win their The Greens are set to win their first seat ever in the Northern Territory Parliament. first ever seat in the Northern Territory Parliament it leaves Northern Territory labor with four seats the same size as the crossbench joining us now from the night Cliff electorate is the greens candidate cat McNamara good morning to you morning Bridget congratulations what are the factors that have led to you winning this seat 33 votes in it and you've taken the seat from the for former Northern Territory chief minister Natasha files yeah well look it's been um an incredible time and an incredible campaign um we've just got the most incredible volunteers here all the way from imant Al Springs up to the top end um and look people were just really Keen to hear what we had to offer and to see our vision um we like people what really resonated was the fact that we don't take corporate donations and we want to put the community back front and center in politics as it should be what was some of the issues that territorians there in N cliff and the surrounding suburbs were telling you that they were concerned about because this has been a decimation of the former labor government why were people really wanting a change at this election yeah look there was a range of issues um one Community safety and crime but also the environment as well here the decision by the former Chief Minister to Green Light fracking um left a lot of people feeling um betrayed I mean I have spoken to so many people who've told me that that was a real turning point for them people who described themselves as rusted on labor voters who said they were going to vote greens for the first time and we're really excited by that um so people look if they're not happy with what um their representatives are offering they're going to make it known on the ballot how tricky are these issues going to be navigate in the NT Parliament because Pres presumably you've got a very different view on issues like Community safety clearly recognizing that it is a concern for territorians to the approach of the CP government led by Leia fiaro are you going to be able to collaborate in any way in the NT Parliament to really address this issue in particular yeah so we're here and we will be bringing the voices of the community into Parliament so for issues like this we know that we are looking at evidence-based Solutions so things like locking up children putting 10-year-olds in prison not only is it wrong but it doesn't work and we want to make our community safer um with evidence-based Solutions and that's what we've heard from the community they can see that doing things like putting children in prison is not making us any safer and they want a different solutions and it's not just here in N Cliff I mean we had the largest swing towards the greens 30% in the elector of braitling in Alis Springs um we had Suki Doris Walker who just missed out in Fanny Bay so thousands of people across the territory have voted voted for Progressive alternatives to the issues that we're facing cat what will you be telling the territory government and the Parliament about the economy because when I was there uh just a couple of weeks ago for the election that was another issue that so many people were talking about just the flatlining economy and things just feeling like they're going backwards what opportunities do you see to really boost the NT economy yeah absolutely we want to see the NT prosper and Thrive and that includes jobs and building our economy and what we see for that is a Renewables future we have such an opportunity here in the territory to be a leader in this field we could be making you know the big battery storage solar we have endless sunshine this is an industry that we would love to see here going forward and it's going to produce unlike gas and those type of jobs which are boom and bust a Renewables future is going to give us long lasting sustainable jobs into the future and we absolutely need and want that here Kat mcnamar I'm very jealous of your backdrop there I'd like to be beamed back tonight Cliff right now um have a great day thanks for joining us on news breakfast this morning thank you so much beautiful does absolutely stunning yeah it does yeah okay let's uh look at the Reserve Bank Governor confirms a cut in interest rates isn't on the cards anytime soon. other news of the morning now and The Reserve Bank Governor has confirmed a cut in interest rates is not
