the website's critical consensus reads mile 22 lets the bullets fly and not much else in a thrilled deficient action thriller whose title proves sadly fitting for a film that feels close to a marathon endurance test on Metacritic the film has awaited average score of 38 out of 100 based on 36 critics indicating generally unfavorable reviews audiences pulled by cinemascore gave the film an average grade of B on an A plus to FC scale while postra reported filmgoers gave it a 63% positive score enen glaberman of variety wrote Berg when he wants to be is a surgical Craftsman of chaos yet mile 22 has little weight or resonance Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter wrote like an athlete who leaves it all on the field the film leaves it all in the moment and on the screen and there's really nothing to take away afterwards there is nothing to think about about no nuances to contemplate no connection with these characters who exist only in moments of hypertension and crisis no greater truths to consider other than to Prevail the performance of UWI received some praise Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times said as a performer and fight choreographer U delivers with some extremely athletic and imaginative kills mostly performed while handcuffed it's also Far and Away U's best acting performance in a film and he almost makes mile 22 worth it Brian Lori of CNN stated in fact U's action sequences fast-paced and electric are easily the highlight of a movie otherwise characterized by an abundance of automatic weapons fire and tedious dialogue during the fleeting gaps between those bursts David fear of Rolling Stone gave the film two out of five stars criticizing the editing of the fight scenes and stating why go through the trouble of giving iiko UI several fight scenes and editing them so that you can barely see the star inflict highly choreographed damage mile 22 can give you chase scenes and bullet-ridden shootouts and evil Russians and lengthy diet tribes it can give you something approximating action what it can't give you is a watchable action movie that's where it truly fails To Go the Distance possible sequel in 2018 Peter Berg announced plans for a sequel as of June 2023 no further updates on the potential sequel have been made with the film's negative critical reception being cited as a possible reason mile 22 movie review these days it's never any good to be part of an elite unless it's an Elite member of an Elite Squad of intelligence operatives and trained Killers working under the radar of official scrutiny to protect our most vital yada yada yada then it's good Mark Walberg plays just such a soul one James Jimmy Silva in mile 22 the new film wants again teaming wallberg with director Peter join the Army mother fuer Berg messers Walberg and Berg have made some hella manly films together all of them up until now based on true stories Lone Survivor deep waterer Horizon Patriots Day mile 22 written by Lee Carpenter from a story she concocted with Graham Roland is an entirely fictional work but if you think it doesn't have something to say about the here and now that we're living in your well it's complicated also kind of dumb maybe not worth getting into so much the movie opens with a scene in a bucolic Suburban called the saac that demonstrates the sophistication of Jimmy's crew he's in a backyard with a sniper's rifle while his colleagues are at the front door of a tasteful Colonial House pretending to be lost inside the house are a bunch of Russians up to no good they and we know this because a Remote Crew headed by John malovich as mother the agents on the ground are called child one child 2 and so on has the house surveilled by drones they've also got Jimmy and the crews vitals monitored Slick still the operation doesn't go quite as planned there's some missing dirty bomb material they don't retrieve and a suspiciously young asset from whom Jimmy extracts the ultimate price hm a credit sequence establishes Wahlberg's character as a kind of Jack Ryan on speed he was a child prodigy with anger issues who lost his family at a young age his CIA agent status is actually his cover and he has to resign from the agency every time he works with malovich and Company subsequent scenes reveals he curses a lot as does his closest colleague Alice Lauren Cohan who saves most of her profanity for her ex-husband Luke played by Berg in a koi Cameo Jimmy is actively unpleasant when he's Mission focused his motormouth raps at underlings show that he's both crazy like a fox and crazy like an ouse rat on the trail of the dirty bomb material Jimmy and Alice buttheads with a Southeast Asian Source Who has the location of the stuff but won't give it up until he's on a plane to America where he wants Asylum the title refers to the number of miles between the US Embassy and the airstrip where that plane will leave from the local corrupt government is going to do everything in its power to keep Jimmy Alice and their crew from getting the source Lor on that plane nor is played by Aiko uwise the Indonesian action star who's best known here for his kicking and punching in the The Raid movies he was also in Star Wars Episode Roman 7 the force awakens so obviously he gets to do a lot of action stuff here and it's impressive fighting back against two fake medicos who want to assassinate him while he's handcuffed to a hospital bed that kind of thing there's a more than satisfactory amount of Boom Boom in the movies trim running time at 95 minutes this is the shortest picture in the Berg Walberg Ira the action is intercut with shots of wallberg in a suit and tie speaking in a conference room talking about chaos and how none of you know what the word collusion really means it seems that in the aftermath of this Mission Jimmy decided to try and compete with Jordan Peterson's YouTube videos no that's not it these scenes are him briefing his higher ups shadowy figures of maybe the Deep state or maybe not about the mission we see being enacted before us which is another one that doesn't go as planned and leaves a ton of dead bodies and Munitions residue in its wake the movie has a peculiar political undercurrent it's very Pro secret missions but only because it subscribes to the ideology of there are bad people out there who want to do bad things to us when mother and his crew set up their high-tech equipment on a mission they lay out bobblehead dolls of US presidents past and present the one wearing the make America great again baseball cap is placed next to one of Obama and the shot of the two together reads like a cheeky pair of sorts from Berg and Walberg also interesting is that malovich is compelled to trot out an old HL men can quote about raising the Black Flag and slitting throats which is also the motto of well-known pseudonymous right-wing blogger and I don't think either Berg or Walberg are big HL manin readers so the movie often felt to me like The Gauntlet as Rewritten by a breart newsbot now I'm not saying that's a bad thing but what if I were I guess I'd hear about it in comments to which I'd have only one response join the Army the time of Peter BG and Mark Walberg movies has run its course they've rarely been great deep water Horizon but they've also never been as borderline unwatchable as their recent collaboration mile 22 it's understandable when a director and an actor like working together and keep collaborating but Berg and Walberg are playing into each other's weaknesses with Walberg B's characters highlighting Berg's military fetish and Berg letting Walberg play vapid Heroes who need to be the center of attention despite failing to do anything worthy of that attention mile 22 is particularly egregious because Walberg is so out of his depth playing a ruthless genius and the script does him no favors with its unquestioning celebration of American Military might wear Fallout isn't considered only that we weren't violent enough in our imaginations in the first place James Silva Walberg is a paramilitary officer in an elite CIA task force that works with the intelligence team OverWatch led by Bishop John malovich who oversees a team of Specialists that are also named after chess pieces 16 months after a domestic mission that went South Silva and his team are in Southeast Asia trying to find a deadly chemical agent in walks Li nor IO wise a local officer with information on where to find the chemical agent he'll only give up its location if Silva and his team escort lie to an Airfield and give him asylum in America faced with no other options Silva and his team must make the 22-mile journey from the embassy to the Airfield and get lie on the plane safely unfortunately a team of Russian hackers have hacked into OverWatch and are tipping the scales in the corrupt local government's favor to say that the screenwriting on Mile 22 is sloppy would be an understatement it should be a straightforward simple plot not too dissimilar from Berg's excellent The Rundown where a tough character has to escort another character to an airstrip and yet Lee Carpenter's screenplay can't stop tripping over its own swinging dick rather than build up a relationship between Silva and his team he's just a raging to everyone and that's his character also even though Silva is supposedly a genius who thinks so fast he constant L needs to snap a rubber band on his wrist to calm down neither he nor OverWatch stops to think golly we can see everything but the bad guys are always one step ahead of us how did that happen the movie prefers to just pile violence on top of violence but none of it has weight because this is a world without friendship or camaraderie it's Lone Survivor minus caring what happens to your fellow soldiers so the only thing left is for soldiers to do is to die well Berg's love of the military is no secret and in some ways that's admirable movies like Battleship Lone Survivor and to a lesser extent Patriots Day are about how men and women in uniform go above and beyond to try and fight as honorable Warriors in a world that has no rules but Berg's movies never reckon with what a lawless world really means so they just become empty celebrations of force nowhere is that clearer than in mile 22 where the special agents operate under a higher form of patriotism but there's no questioning of military might that can wipe anyone out at any time or the repercussions from such immoral actions for mile 22 violence is gratification and the Fallout of those actions is just a precursor to more violence the cycle isn't questioned but celebrated which makes for a deeply nihilistic and grotesque experience the only times where the violence is even remotely in enjoyable is when uwise is on screen because his martial arts Acumen provides a bizarre form of escapism because few people in cinema can actually do what uwise does his violent attacks brutal as they may be at least provide a thrill that Mark Wahlberg firing an assault rifle can never hope to achieve but even then the screenplay fails because lie is an abysmal character we can't possibly hope to root for him because he's basically willing to let thousands of people die in a chemical attack unless he personally gets Asylum he's not a hero he's an opportunist in a world full of soulless opportunist some may argue that that's the point of Mile 22 if there's any point to be had in such mindless Slaughter we live in an unjust world and it takes immoral men like Silva to provide any semblance of order however such a position would be mere sophistry the kind of empty rambling monologue that Silva is prone to give to to let the audience know he is smart mile 22 doesn't have the brains to back up its Hollow morality and it certainly doesn't have a serviceable mouthpiece in Walberg Mark Wahlberg is not a bad actor but his range is limited he's best when he's playing a workingclass guy or an outsider which speaks to his talent because Walberg hasn't been working class or an outsider since 1991 you let wallberg play a cop or a criminal and he's on Easy Street he's even given outstanding performances in Boogie Nights IH heart huckabees and the fighter but his macho posturing comes off as consistently irritating when mile 22 tries to push his Brilliance you almost feel like the movie is 2 seconds away from putting glasses on Silva so that we'll buy him as intelligent and yet his actions never show an intelligent person he's never ahead of the bad guys and he's not exactly resourceful when he's got OverWatch in his corner looking at every security camera controlling every building and able to order a drone strike at any time so just loading him up with monologues and quotes makes him about as intelligent as an essay that starts off by quoting the dictionary almost nothing in mile 22 works as it should and one would expect that collaborations between a director and an actor would yield stronger movies not weaker ones and yet as mile 22 shows neither Berg nor Walberg is any anywhere close to operating at the top of their game with this movie rather than letting Wahlberg play a brilliant tough guy the film would have been better served letting the enigmatic lie be the protagonist and showing off more of U's martial arts ability thankfully that movie already exists it's called The Raid and it offers a far better action experience than the pathetic excuse from mile 22 other information about this film The Heroes of explosive AC Espionage Thrillers tend to be men a few words but Mark Walberg breaks the pattern in mile 22 a broken limb flying glass dirty Ops spectacular he plays Jimmy Silva a walking Lethal Weapon who leads a US intelligence Squad so Elite and undercover and Ultra badass that it has severed all legal connection to the government that's so its members can you know do what has to be done Jimmy a hard-bitten agent and assassin never misses the chance to toss off some rapid fire jabber about history violence nuclear weapons his Trio of Ex-Wives you name it if you listen to his words he's actually rather philosophical for a quasi sociopathic government killer and the fact that he comes off as someone badgering people on an amphetamine Jag isn't necessarily a strike against him it's just a sign that he cares we see a home movie montage of his childhood hyperactivity violence or orphaned at the age of 11 and the question that drives walberg's entertainingly hostile and wired performance is am I spewing fragments of wisdom or am I so tightly wounded that I'm halfway to Crazy the answer is a bit of both mile 22 takes its Jagged attention deficit Rhythm from Walberg and also from Paul Greengrass born films it's like a degraded and Darkly pulped version of them with editing so fast it's almost pointalism surveillance scenes greatly influenced by the underrated Jason Bourne 2016 that suggests there isn't a corner of the world or your bedroom that the government can't get into in the hair trigger set piece that opens the movie Jimmy and his team burst into a tranquil Woodside Suburban home that's actually a Russian safe house where they attempt to apprehend the people inside this results in a frenzied pile up of Leaping out of the corner blasting through the walls ambushes with much of the Mayhem glimpsed through fuzzy surveillance images monitored by a computer Squad overseen by Bishop who has played you want to say of course by John malovich these hackers can read the heartbeat and blood pressure of each team member an efficient way to tell if they're dead the mission turns out to be a big botch Our Heroes got bad information about who was in the house but though we're basically just watching a bunch of Assassins kill a bunch of other people The adrenalized Cutting lends it all of frantic self-importance as if this were Zero Dark 30 directed by Sergey eisenstein mile 22 marks the fourth collaboration between Walberg and the director Peter Berg the two have made one film together that aimed High the gripping and convulsive true life terrorist drama Patriots Day this one aims a lot lower and more or less hits the Mark it's a spiky propulsive Thriller at once exciting and numbing packed with weap rocket launchers and chunky black machine guns as well as hand-to-hand combat that's marked by a QuickTime viciousness Burg when he wants to be is a surgical Craftsman of chaos yet mile 22 has no weight or resonance it's a down and dirty hunk of product designed to kick off a franchise and that in the end is what's at stake can it catch us up in the greater narrative Jimmy's Commando team includes his veteran comrade Alice car Lauren Cohan who in her silky way is as overw as he is she's going through a divorce and is such a hard case that she can't keep herself from cursing out her ex over the phone even though the new divorce software will shut down her communication with her young daughter for the crime of texting a single obscenity Cohan from The Walking Dead makes her a highly functional Basket Case raging distraught but utterly able to put that on hold when terrorists steal a shipment of cesium M 139 which can be fashioned into the street equivalent of a nuke a mystery agent Lor IO U has turned himself into the American embassy of his host country and claims to know the location of the stolen cesium shipments the host country is never identified but seems like a version of South Korea lie has stored the information on a dis and has the code that will unlock it but the disc is set to deconstruct in 8 hours he'll give up the code only if Jimmy and his team escort him the 22 treacherous miles to a plane that will deliver him to the safe haven of the US the charismatic Indonesian actor Aiko uwise has appeared in films ranging from The Raid to Star Wars the Force awakens and he endows lie with the btic murderous Elegance of a stoic martial arts star when he's attacked in a checkup room by two of his countrymen the fight that ensues is a messy Cutthroat knock out but then he's shoved into a car where he becomes the package that Jimmy and his Squad must protect from teams of Assassins at this point any Espionage subtlety is out the window which makes you grateful for a moment like malovich snapping at wallberg stop monologuing you bipolar FK mile 22 turns into a kamakazi Chase Thriller and the film's relatively brief running time just 94 minutes is more than a matter of chopped down excess the movie unfolds like a Chase in real time it's a rolling orgy of grenades and micr bombs and cars themselves used as bashing weapons the body count is high but what's noteworthy is how many of those bodies belong to the good guys in mile 22 being on the right side won't save you the movie reflects a world in disorder right down to its big final twist which sets up the sequel yet Berg's staging has a violent precision as at one point Alice attacks a goon With A Shard of glass and does well enough with it but he's still alive and lunges at her and when a red hole in his forehead suddenly appears courtesy of a sniper's rifle the person behind me at a preview screening said nice I knew what he meant when it comes to a movie making execution feel good it's all in the timing Mark Walberg and Peter Berg reunite yet again for the action thriller mile 22 but fourth time ends up not being the charm for the actor director pairing the duo previously worked together on a Trilogy of dacad drama Thrillers focusing on a Navy SEAL Mission gone wrong loone Survivor the BP Gulf of Mexico oil rig explosion spill Deepwater Horizon and the Boston Marathon bombing Patriots Day while each of these fact-based films have clear through lines and purposes mile 22 is much choppier and suffers from its attempt to serve as the glorified pilot for a a series of movies including a mile 22 sequel that's already being written mile 22 isn't lacking when it comes to hard-hitting action but is undone by its confused narrative and over rushed attempt at franchise building wallberg stars in mile 22 as James Silva a high functioning but antisocial individual who was recognized by the US government as being a prodigy at a young age and ultimately recruited to work for the Sea's most elite SE secret task force OverWatch while stationed in Indonesia Silva and his fellow OverWatch members Including Alice care Lauren Kohan and Sam snow Rond Rousey are approached by Li nor IO uwise a native police officer who claims to have information regarding a missing chemical substance that could be used to make highly destructive and radioactive dirty bombs nor then demands that he be flown out of the country to Safety in the US before he Reveals His Hand it soon becomes apparent that whatever information no is holding on to it's important enough that the local government is willing to have him killed in order to prevent it from being leaked with the details locked away in an unhackable flash drive that will degrade in 8 hours and nor being the only one who knows the password to access it Silva and the rest of the OverWatch Squad led by their boss John malovich who is code named mother thus assemble in order to transport port noord to an extraction Point located 22 mi from his current position at the Indonesian US Embassy but can they get there in one piece mile 22 was originally presented as being a standalone action thriller starring wallberg uwise and Rousey based on a script by Graham Roland creator of Amazon's upcoming Jack Ryan series back when it was first announced in 2015 however 2 years later Walberg Berg and STX Reve red that it had since been redesigned to serve as the first installment in a Trilogy with relative newcomer Lee Carpenter now credited for writing the screenplay from a story co-edited to Roland unfortunately the final movie result plays out more as a slap Dash origin story for James Silva than a compelling introduction to the character and His World similarly there are a number of supporting players and subplots here that feel like either their roles were reduced from an earlier script draft or they were added to lay the groundwork for a mile 22 franchise despite being mostly irrelevant to this movie the same goes for a mostly pointless narrative framing device that involves Silva being debriefed by a mysterious Superior officer while mile 22 touches upon certain recurring themes from Berg's previous films see heroism and sacrifice in the line of duty the movie stabs at political commentary and relevance are as jumbled as its narrative certain elements like a plot thread involving the Russian government feel as though they were shoehorned in here in order to make the movie feel more timely but they inadvertently wind up muddying its subtext instead mile 22 also literally looks as Rough Around the Edges as its story feels Berg uses the same gorilla film making techniques here as he has on his previous features including heavy use of security camera footage Alla patriots day but there's less meth to his approach this time around the director and his crew which includes his trusty camera operator turned cinematographer ja jrit and frequent editors Melissa lawsen Chun and Colby Parker jar in turn deliver action sequences here that feel chaotic but not as nerve-wracking or intense to watch as intended at the center of this storm is Walberg as Silva a realistic superhero think Ben afful in the accountant who can lead the mile 22 franchise Silva comes off as being a cross between walberg's foulmouthed sergeant from The Departed and a quazi sociopathic genius in the vein of Dr Gregory House from House MD but lacks the sharp wit and glimpses of a richer Humanity beneath the hardened exterior that makes those characters engaging it doesn't help that Silva and the other characters here are largely developed through hamfisted dialogue rather than their behavior Cohan as Alice is fleshed out the most among the supporting players in mile 22 but even her storyline which involves a young daughter as well as an orary ex-husband portray by Berg himself struggles to leave much of an emotional impact on the other hand cohan's experience killing zombies on The Walking Dead serves her well and she thrives while playing the action hero during mile 22's close quarter combat scenes and shootouts while Rousey makes for an equally convincing action star here as she has in movie past U is easily the scene stealer in the film The actor Marshall artist made a real name for himself with his bone crunching brawls from The Raid movies and further showcases his expertise as both a stuntman and fight choreographer with his efforts on Mile 22 ui's Lor is also intriguing when it comes to the mystery around his true motivation enough so that in a number of ways he's more interesting than Silva as a character in the end my 22 feels like it could have been a solid bornes Thriller had it not been clumsily reformatted to launch a mark wallberg franchise while some aspects still work on the whole the film is a bit of a mess and a pretty noticeable step down in quality from Walberg and Berg's previous true story inspired collaborations together mile 22 is better made and acted than other action movies that have been dumped in mid to late August in the past admittedly not a high bar to click clear but it's probably best saved for a future home rental for those interested in checking it out as for those mile 22 multimedia IP plans the box office will have the final say on that matter positive elements with all the bullets and explosions in Mayhem we don't have time to get to know most of the OverWatch team members very well and when we do get to know a few Silva for instance what we see isn't particularly Winsome still these folks are trying to safeguard lots of lives and you don't need to be likable to be a hero Silva understands that his mission is more important than any one team member but when one of his compatriots a mother struggling to find ways to connect with her young daughter despite her demanding dangerous job is in serious danger Silva and lie decide to help her even though that rescue operation endangers the mission spiritual elements Silva chats with team member Al us about their morally squishy jobs there is no Absolution no washing clean what we do he says though he jokingly cynically acknowledges that if you buy into Jesus there may be a way it's an interesting line given that Mark Wahlberg who plays Silva is a devout Catholic with an admittedly checkered past we also hear a passing sarcastic reference to Heaven Li is called by some a witch Silva later asks him if he is one no Li answers are you sexual content Silva barges into a woman's locker room where Alice is getting out of a shower though she's covered by a towel lie as part of a physical psychological exam strips down to his underwear we wind up seeing quite a bit of his physique because violent content he's attacked by a parent orderly actually agents for the Asian country in which the movie takes place the the fight is incredibly violent parts of it are replayed via security footage combatants battle with fists and feet needles and broken glass and parts of a shattered bed frame but lie eventually kills both of them Gorly stabbing one in the neck and twisting the metal as the gruesome kudagra it's one of several such moments in what may be one of the most brutal movies of the year in the opening scene Silva and his Squad invade a Suburban House filled with Russians first apprehending them and then when given the go-ahead executing them one an 18-year-old operative leaps out of a window from the now burning home and lands in front of the barrel of Silva's gun Silva asks if he's being ordered to kill the grotesquely burned man in broad daylight out in the open he's told yes he must kill him and so he does we see several people shot and killed and often bloodily so one man is shot several times times and he slips on his own blood before someone walks up to him and puts the final bullet in his forehead others are shot in the knees before being killed with another slug to the neck explosions claim plenty of casualties two we see cars Homes apartments and businesses blown up via creative means one OverWatch member after being seriously wounded in a car explosion waits for her enemies to come close before arming a pair of grenades killing them all some asants attack others with blades or other sharp implements one man has his cheek sliced open with a Shard of glass his asant then jams the glass into the palm of his hand piercing it all the way through moreover lie seems to be something of a martial arts expert which results in some frenetic painfully choreographed fight scenes that include snapped legs and broken necks someone nearly kills another character with a choke hold if the cesium is used as is feared we hear that the ensuing fatalities could be astronomical Sila reminds his team what happened to Japanese citizens who suffered from radiation poisoning at Hiroshima and Nagasaki their skin Silva said would slip off their bodies like gloves we see pictures of the devastation of those two cities news Clips likewise showcase some realworld violence we learn that Silva's family died in a car crash in Old family video footage we see a young Silva getting into a couple of fights as well as hearing school officials talking about the need to curb his violence crude or profane language Silva and others use more than 60 F words along with about 15s words other profanities include a whole bch and H along with a ly of others including a harsh slang phrase referencing oral sex God's name is Miss abused twice once with DN while Jesus name is abused once other negative elements Alice is involved in a messy custody dispute with her ex-husband phone calls and texts home often descend into heated profanity laced accusations and recriminations Silva has a host of personality disorders it would seem which makes him treat the people around him pretty shabbily conclusion mile 22 is dumb for IC and owe so bloody a featurelength romp through a hurricane of fists and feet and death for some of course that's exactly what they're looking for in a late Summer movie Diversion lots of action little thought Mark Walberg With A Gun upand cominging martial arts actor iiko uwise with um kicks and stuff take my money but for Discerning film goers whether we're talking aesthetic or ethical discernment mile 22 is a Flatout fail what you need to know mile 22 is a high octane Thriller it stars starring Mark Walberg as James Silva a highly trained brilliant paramilitary operative trying to protect an asset with valuable information working in a Southeast Asian country to find some deadly explosives the man turns himself over to the Americans saying he knows exactly where the explosives are however he'll only give the intel if the American agents get him to the United States alive this means Silva will have to enact a top secret operation to move the informant 22 miles to an airstrip while an army of goons try to kill them once mile 22 gets going the action and intensity never cease a major problem is the movie's writing and structure there's no climax the movie builds to what could have been an epic showdown but instead leaves that Showdown for a sequel mile 22 has some moral moments of protecting innocent lives but there's a message it's okay to give up morals for the greater good this is where the movie becomes problematic excessive violence and abundant foul language warrant Extreme Caution for mile 22 content dominant world viw and other worldview contentments light moral patriotic worldview of protecting lives domestically but also protecting innocent civilian lives of other nations especially children there's a positive postive reference to Jesus being forgiving but with an implication that Jesus isn't for the main characters because they're soldiers who have a job to do in stopping violent villains mixed with unbiblical Pagan elements contending it's ultimately okay to give up morals for the greater good of the country and National Security foul language at least 80 obscenities including about 60 fword and five profanities violence some very strong and graphic violence and lots of of action violence with many people getting shot stabbed with various objects including needles shards of glass broken bottles and other sharp items arms and legs are broken various brutal killings with glass some of these are excruciating to watch and can't be described car accidents explosions and brutal wounds and burns shown more detail mile 22 is a high octane Thriller starring Mark wallberg as James Silva a highly trained brilliant paramilitary operative trying to protect an asset with valuable information about a major attack the opening credits reveal that Silva is mentally unstable and prone to Violent outbursts but extremely intelligent serving in the military and CIA Silva now is a part of a top secret Tactical Team that's aided by a remote team called OverWatch who keep an eagle eye view on Silva's operatives protecting them and keeping them on target the opening scenes shows Silva's operatives and OverWatch an action as they infiltrate a KGB Safe House in the United States and kill everyone involved 18 months later Silva and his guys are in a corrupt and dangerous Southeast Asian country looking for a deadly compound that could set off the worst terrorist attacks in history on Silva's team is Alice an equally hot tempered operative grappling with a divorce and trying to maintain a relationship with her daughter now that she's a secret agent out of the blue a local cop Lor approaches the US Embassy with a hard drive saying he knows exactly where the explosives are that Silva is hunting the locations are on the hard drive but if they don't get him out of the country with Asylum to the s in 8 hours the drive will erase itself and they'll get nothing Silva and Alice at first refuse to give lie anything but then two men try to kill lie while he's in their custody at the embassy and they realize that the country hosting them will do anything to silence lie to extract Lie from the country Silva's Superior enacts the OverWatch protocol where Silva and his team are officially fired from the government and become ghosts to avoid any blowback on the US government the remote OverWatch team is assembled and Silva and his team of deadly men and women are sent out with lie all they have to do is travel 22 Mi through the city to an airport STP trip where a military plane is waiting getting there will prove more difficult and more deadly than they imagined once mile22 gets going the action and intensity never cease director Peter BG makes mile 22 his fourth collaboration with Walberg Lone Survivor Patriots Day and deep water Horizon and it's by far their most brutal and morally Gray movie Walberg consistently plays intense prone to anger characters and Silva is all that many times over however he stays a single faceted character and viewers never really see a human side to him at one point he shows he cares for the lives of innocent civilians even if they're not American also though he's ready to leaves some of his injured soldiers behind to die he eventually goes out of his way to save Alice a major problem with the movie's writing and structure is that there's no real climax the movie builds to what could have been an epic showdown but instead leaves that Showdown for a sequel consequently most viewers will be asking themselves that was it as for the movie's morally gray worldview the OverWatch head played by John malovich at one point calls their service a higher form of patriotism because these guys will do what no one else will all of this begs the question how much is too much while the movie makes no judgments about the types of operations these agents must perform it presents some glimpses of the moral lines these soldiers care about such as protecting random children in the street who could get caught in a crossfire otherwise however virtually anything else goes for the sake of protecting National Security in one scene Silva comments to a frustrated Alice about how many people they've killed you should try the Jesus guy Silva says I hear he's really forgiving clearly for the heroes in this story Jesus is out of the question Silva believes that sometimes you need Heroes who do bad things for good reasons it's a flawed and unbiblical worldview but it's also disconnected from the rest of the story since they spend the entire plot trying to save someone and all of the killing that happens is in self-defense from a viewing perspective mile 22 is overly violent and almost relishes in some of the gruesome ways bad guys are killed there's also abundant foul language throughout that makes this movie inappropriate for teenagers and warrants Extreme Caution for adults Mark Walberg and Peterburg are back and they're here to kick butts the latest collaboration from the actor and director who brought you Lone Survivor deep water Horizon and Patriots Day isn't a serious dramatic Thriller about a real life tragedy it's a souped up action thriller about Good Guys bad guys fighting and guns and it might have been a cool movie if the film filmmakers didn't take this ridiculous material too seriously Mark Wahlberg stars as James Silva a Black Ops specialist who's so smart he has to slap his wrist with a rubber band just to stop himself from being so smart all the time his team consists of actors desperately trying to make the most out of only one characteristic including angry mom Alice Lauren Cohan sneaker Enthusiast Bishop John malovich dessert deliverer William Carlo Al and dessert recipient Sam Rond Rousey in the midst of their latest assignment in Southeast Asia their informant line nor IO UI shows up at the embassy with an ominous sounding our Robos Drive the drive contains all the information Silva needs to track down some stolen cesium AK a fear powder and save the world from those who would use it to make dirty bonds but the drive will self-destruct in 8 hours unless Silva and is off the books over OverWatch team extract Lor from the country it's 22 mi from their base to the airport and everyone in the local government and a couple of random cafe enthusiasts just to be silly about it are trying to kill them the last half of Mile 22 is a Non-Stop action Extravaganza in which people kill people or get killed or some combination of the two pretty straightforward right the problem is Peterburg has developed a signature Style by now if it's a choppy Macho you are here and you are constantly distracted by details approach that when done right can amplify based on a true stories like Lone Survivor and Patriots day but in a fictional pulpy setting like mile 22 it's a distraction the screenplay paints this world with broad impressionistic strokes but Berg brings it to life with something akin to photo realism and it falls apart under that kind of scrutiny worst of all the fast edit that gives Peter Berg's dramatic scenes gravitas makes his action sequences hard to follow IO youwise is mostly wasted in mile 22 the star of The Raid The Raid 2 and headshot is one of the most exciting martial arts performers in the Contemporary action genre but he only gets a couple of moments to unleash his physical prowess and when he does Berg uses so many edits that it robs the actor of his wow factor iiko uwise looks like he can do anything when you show him doing it in one take when a director uses five cuts to show you why is pulling off just one move it's not nearly as exciting impressive or even believable Ronda Rousey makes the most out of her small role and Lauren Cohan proves herself a capable action star despite her underwritten character but the actor who suffers the most in M 22 is Mark Walberg who plays a hero who's so haphazardly written that the other characters can't agree on which mental disorder he suffers from he's supposedly some kind of Super Genius but his dialogue frequently consists of repeated words and phrases which makes him sound like he escaped from an Edwood movie he also randomly quotes books that you can't quite picture him ever reading because he's also the kind of guy who makes jokes in the middle of shootouts with bad guys who just murdered his friends mile 22 is an energetic motion picture but it's too simplistic for this kind of heavy-handed treatment the action stars look like they're holding back and the dramatic stars look like they're trying to win a shouting match but there sure is a lot of action going on here and if you're a DI hard fan of the genre you might find something to latch on to it's just a shame that with a pedigree this impressive the best mile 22 can get is you might find something to latch on to mile 22 is a rating of 23% based on 192 reviews and an average rating of 4210 the website's critical consensus reads mile 22 lets the bullets fly and not much else in a thrilled deficient action thriller whose title proves sadly fitting for a film that feels close to a marathon endurance test on Metacritic the film has a weighted average score of 38 out of 100 based on 36 critics indicating generally unfavorable reviews audiences pulled by cinemascore gave the film an average grade of B on an A plus to f scale while postra reported film goers gave it a 63% positive score Olen glaberman of variety wrote Berg when he wants to be is a surgical Craftsman of chaos yet mile 22 has little weight or resonance Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter wrote like an athlete who leaves it all on the field the film leaves it all in the moment and on the screen and there's really nothing to take away afterwards there is nothing to think about no nuances to contemplate no connection with these characters who exist only in moments of hypertension and crisis no greater truths to consider other than to Prevail the performance of UWI received some praise Katie Walsh of the Los Angeles Times said as a performer and fight choreographer UI delivers with some extremely athletic and imaginative kills mostly performed while handcuffed it's also Far and Away U's best acting performance in a film and he almost makes mile 22 worth it Brian Lori of CNN stated in fact U's action sequences fast-paced and electric are easily the highlight of a movie otherwise characterized by an abundance of automatic weapons fire and tedious dialogue during the fleeting gaps between those bursts David fear of Rolling Stone gave the film two out of five stars criticizing the editing of the fight scenes and stating why go through the trouble of giving iiko UI several fight scenes and editing them so that you can barely see the star inflict highly choreographed damage mile 22 can give you chase scenes and bullet-ridden shootouts and evil Russians and lengthy di tribes it can give you something approximating action what it can't give you is is a watchable action movie that's where it truly fails To Go the Distance possible sequel in 2018 Peter Berg announced plans for a sequel as of June 2023 no further updates on the potential sequel have been made with the film's negative critical reception being cited as a possible reason mile 22 movie review these days it's never any good to be part of an elite unless it's an Elite member of an elite Squad of intelligence operatives and trained Killers working under the radar of official scrutiny to protect our most vital yada yada yada then it's good Mark Walberg plays just such a soul one James Jimmy Silva in mile 22 the new film once again teaming wallberg with director Peter join the Army mother fu ER Berg messes wallberg and Berg have made some hella manly films together all of them up until now based on true stories Lone Survivor deep waterer Horizon Patriots Day mile 22 written by Lee Carpenter from a story she concocted with graham Roland is an entirely fictional work but if you think it doesn't have something to say about the here and now that we're living in your well it's complicated also kind of dumb maybe not worth getting into so much the movie opens with a scene in a bucolic Suburban called the saac that demonstrates the sophistication of Jimmy's crew he's in a backyard with a snipers rifle while his colleagues are at the front door of a tasteful Colonial House pretending to be lost inside the house are a bunch of Russians up to no good they and we know this because a Remote Crew headed by John movich as mother the agents on the ground are called child one child two and so on has the house surveilled by drones they've also got Jimmy and the crew's vitals monitored slick still the operation doesn't go quite as planned there's some missing dirty bomb material they don't retrieve and a suspiciously young asset from whom Jimmy extracts the ultimate price hm a credit sequence establishes walberg's character as a kind of Jack Ryan on speed he was a child prodigy with anger issues who lost his family at a young age his CIA agent status is actually his cover and he has to resign from the agent see every time he works with malovich and Company subsequent scenes reveals he curses a lot as does his closest colleague Alice Lauren Cohan who saves most of her profanity for her ex-husband Luke played by Berg in a koi Cameo Jimmy is actively unpleasant when he's Mission focused his motormouth RS at underlings show that he's both crazy like a fox and crazy like an ouse rat on the trail of the dirty bomb material Jimmy and Alice buttthe heads with a Southeast Asian Source Who has the location of the stuff but won't give it up until he's on a plane to America where he wants assylum the title refers to the number of miles between the US Embassy and the airstrip where that plane will leave from the local corrupt government is going to do everything in its power to keep Jimmy Alice and their crew from getting the source Lor on that plane no is played by iiko U the Indonesian action star who's best known here for his kicking and punching in the The Raid movies he was also in Star Wars Episode Roman 7 the force awakens so obviously he gets to do a lot of action stuff here and it's impressive fighting back against two fake medicos who want to assassinate him while he's handcuffed to a hospital bed that kind of thing there's a more than satisfactory amount of Boom Boom in the movies trim running time at 95 minutes this is the shortest picture in the Berg Walberg irvra the action is intercut with shots of wallberg in a suit and tie speaking in a conference room talking about chaos and how none of you know what the word collusion really means it seems that in the aftermath of this Mission Jimmy decided to try and compete with Jordan Peterson's YouTube videos no that's not it these scenes are him briefing his higher ups shadowy figures of maybe the Deep state or maybe not about the mission we see being enacted before us which is another one that doesn't go as planned and leaves a ton of dead bodies and Munitions residue in its wake the movie has a peculiar political undercurrent it's very Pro secret missions but only because it subscribes to the ideology of there are bad people out there who want to do bad things to us when mother and his crew set up their high-tech equipment on a mission they lay out bobblehead dolls of us president's p and present the one wearing the make America great again baseball cap is placed next to one of Obama and the shot of the two together reads like a cheeky dare of sorts from Berg and Walberg also interesting is that malovich is compelled to trot out an old HL men can quote about raising the Black Flag and slitting throats which is also the motto of well-known pseudonymous right-wing blogger and I don't think either Berg or Walberg are big HL manin readers so the movie often felt to me like The Gauntlet as Rewritten by a bra Bart newsbot now I'm not saying that's a bad thing but what if I were I guess I'd hear about it in comments to which I'd have only one response join the Army the time of Peter BG and Mark Walberg movies has run its course they've rarely been great deep water Horizon but they've also never been as borderline unwatchable as their recent collaboration mile 22 it's a understandable when a director and an actor like working together and keep collaborating but Berg and Walberg are playing into each other's weaknesses with walberg's characters highlighting Berg's military fetish and Berg letting Walberg play vapid Heroes who need to be the center of attention despite failing to do anything worthy of that attention mile 22 is particularly egregious because Walberg is so out of his depth playing a ruthless genius and the script does him no favors with it its unquestioning celebration of American Military mik wear Fallout isn't considered only that we weren't violent enough in our imaginations in the first place James Silva Walberg is a paramilitary officer in an elite CIA task force that works with the intelligence team OverWatch led by Bishop John nalovic who oversees a team of Specialists that are also named after chess pieces 16 months after a domestic mission that went South Silva and his team are in Southeast Asia trying to find a deadly chemical agent in walks Li nor IO uwise a local officer with information on where to find the chemical agent he'll only give up its location if Silva and his team escort lie to an Airfield and give him asylum in America faced with no other options Silva and his team must make the 22-mile journey from the embassy to the Airfield and get lie on the plane safely unfortunately a team of Russian hackers have hacked into OverWatch and are tipping the scales in the corrupt local government's favor to say that the screenwriting on Mile 202 is sloppy would be an understatement it should be a straightforward simple plot not too dissimilar from Berg's excellent The Rundown where a tough character has to escort another character to an air strip and yet Lee Carpenter's screenplay can't stop tripping over its own swinging dick rather than build up a relationship between Silva and his team he's just a raging to everyone and that's his character also even though Silva is supposedly a genius who thinks so fast he constantly needs to snap a rubber band on his wrist to calm down neither he nor OverWatch stops to think golly we can see everything but the bad guys are always one step ahead of us how did that happen the movie prefers to just pile violence on top of violence but none of it has weight because this is a world without friendship or camaraderie it's Lone Survivor minus caring what happens to your fellow soldiers so the only thing left is for soldiers to do is to die well Berg's love of the military is no secret and in some ways that's admirable movies like Battleship Lone Survivor and to a lesser extent Patriots Day are about how men and women in uniform go above and beyond to try and fight as honorable Warriors in a world that has no rules but Bergs movies never reckon with what a lawless world really means so they just become empty celebrations of force nowhere is that clearer than in mile 22 where the special agents operate under a higher form of patriotism but there's no questioning of military might that can wipe anyone out at any time or the repercussions from such immoral actions for mile 22 violence is gratification and the Fallout of those actions is just a precursor to more violence the cycle isn't questioned but celebrated which makes for a deeply nihilistic and grotesque experience the only times where the violence is even remotely enjoyable is When U is on screen because his martial arts Acumen provides a bizarre form of escapism because few people in cinema can actually do what uwise does his violent attacks brutal as they may be at least provide a thrill that Mark Wahlberg firing an assault rifle can never hope to achieve but even then the screenplay fails because lie is an abysmal character we can't possibly hope to root for him because he's basically willing to let thousands of people die in a chemical attack unless he personally gets Asylum he's not a hero he's an opportunist in a world full of soulless opportunist some may argue that that's the point of Mile 22 if there's any point to be had in such mindless Slaughter we live in an unjust world and it takes immoral men like Silva to provide any semblance of order however such a position would be mere sophistry the kind of empty rambling monologue that Silva is prone to give to let the audience know he is smart mile 22 doesn't have the brains to back up its Hollow morality and it certainly doesn't have a serviceable mouthpiece in Wahlberg Mark Wahlberg is not a bad actor but his range is limited he's best when he's playing a workingclass guy or an outsider which speaks to his talent because wallberg hasn't been working class or an outsider since 1991 you let Wahlberg play a cop or a criminal and he's on Easy Street he's even given outstanding performances in Boogie Nights IH heart huckabees and the fighter but his macho posturing comes off as consistently irritating when mile 22 tries to push his Brilliance you almost feel like the movie is 2 seconds away from putting glasses on Silva so that we'll buy him as intelligent and and yet his actions never show an intelligent person he's never ahead of the bad guys and he's not exactly resourceful when he's got OverWatch in his Corner looking at every security camera controlling every building and able to order a drone strike at any time so just loading him up with monologues and quotes makes him about as intelligent as an essay that starts off by quoting the dictionary almost nothing in mile 22 works as it should and one would expect that collaborations between a director and an actor would yield stronger movies not weaker ones and yet as mile 22 shows neither Berg nor Walberg is anywhere close to operating at the top of their game with this movie rather than letting Walberg play a brilliant tough guy the film would have been better served letting the enigmatic lie be the protagonist and showing off more of ui's martial arts ability thankfully that movie already exists it's called The Raid and it offers a far better action experience than the pathetic excuse from mile 22 other information about this film The Heroes of explosive action Espionage Thrillers tend to be men of few words but Mark Walberg breaks the pattern in mile 22 a broken limb flying glass dirty Ops spectacular he plays Jimmy Silva a walking Lethal Weapon who leads a US intelligence Squad so Elite and undercover and Ultra badass that it has severed all legal connection to the government that's so its members can you know do what has to be done Jimmy a hard-bitten agent and assassin never misses the chance to toss off some rapid fire jabber about history violence nuclear weapons his Trio of Ex-Wives you name it if you listen to his words he's actually rather philosophical for a quasi sociopathic government killer and the fact that he comes off as someone badgering people on an amphetamine Jag isn't necessar a strike against him it's just a sign that he cares we see a home movie montage of his childhood hyperactivity violence orphaned at the age of 11 and the question that drives walberg's entertainingly hostile and wired performance is am I spewing fragments of wisdom or am I so tightly wounded that I'm halfway to Crazy the answer is a bit of both mile 22 takes its Jagged attention deficit Rhythm from Walberg and all also from Paul Greengrass born films it's like a degraded and Darkly pulped version of them with editing so fast it's almost pointal listic and surveillance scenes greatly influenced by the underrated Jason Bourne 2016 that suggest there isn't a corner of the world or your bedroom that the government can't get into in the hair trigger set piece that opens the movie Jimmy and his team burst into a tranquil Woodside Suburban home that's actually a Russian Safe House where they attempt to apprehend the people inside this results in a frenzied pile up of Leaping out of the corner blasting through the walls ambushes with much of the Mayhem glimpsed through fuzzy surveillance images monitored by a computer Squad overseen by Bishop who is played you want to say of course by John malovich these hackers can read the heartbeat and blood pressure of each team member an efficient way to tell if they're dead the mission turns out to be a big botch Our Heroes got bad information about who was in the house but though we're basically just watching a bunch of Assassins kill a bunch of other people The adrenalized Cutting lend it all of frantic self-importance as if this were Zero Dark 30 directed by Sergey eisenstein mile 22 marks the fourth collaboration between Walberg and the director Peter Berg the two have made one film together that aimed High the gripping and convulsive true life terrorist drama Patriots Day this one aims a lot lower and more or less hits the Mark it's a spiky propulsive Thriller at once exciting and numbing packed with Weaponry rocket launchers and chunky black machine guns as well as hand-to-hand combat that's marked by a QuickTime viciousness Berg when he wants to be is a surgical Craftsman of chaos yet mile 22 has no weight or resonance it's a down and dirty hunk of product designed to kick off a franchise and that in the end is what's at stake can it catch us up in the greater narrative Jimmy's Commando team includes his veteran comrade Alice car Lauren Kohan who in her silky way is as overw as he is she's going through a divorce and is such a hard case that she can't keep herself from cursing out her ex over the phone even though the new divorce software will shut down her communication with her young daughter for the crime of texting a single obscenity Cohan from the Walking dead makes her a highly functional Basket Case raging distraught but utterly able to put that on hold when terrorists steal a shipment of cesium 139 which can be fashioned into the street equivalent of a nuke a mystery agent Lor IO uwise has turned himself into the American embassy of his host country and claims to know the location of the stolen cesium shipment the host country is never identified but seems like a version of South Korea lie has stored the information on a disc and has the code that will unlock it but the dis is set to deconstruct in 8 hours he'll give up the code only if Jimmy and his team escort him the 22 treacherous miles to a plane that will deliver him to the safe haven of the US the charismatic Indonesian actor iiko uwise has appeared in films ranging from The Raid to Star Wars the Force awakens and he endows lie with the btic murderous Elegance of a stoic martial arts star when he's attacked in a checkup room by two of his countrymen the fight that ensues is a messy Cutthroat knockout but then he's shoved into a car where he becomes the package that Jimmy and his Squad must protect from teams of Assassins at this point any Espionage subtlety is out the window which makes you grateful for a moment like malovich snapping at wallberg stop moning you bipolar FK file 22 turns into a comicazi Chase Thriller and the film's relatively brief running time just 94 minutes is more than a matter of chopped down excess the movie unfolds like a Chase in real time it's a rolling orgy of grenades and micro bombs and cars themselves used as bashing weapons the body count is high but what's noteworthy is how many of those bodies belong to the good guys in mile 22 being on the right side won't save you the movie reflects a world in disorder right down to its big final twist which sets up the sequel yet Berg's staging has a violent Precision at one point Alice attacks a goon With A Shard of glass and does well enough with it but he's still alive and lunges at her and when a red hole in his forehead suddenly appears courtesy of a sniper's rifle the person behind me at a preview screening said nice I knew what he meant when it comes to a movie making execution feel good it's all in the timing Mark Wahlberg and Peter Berg reunite yet again for the action thriller mile 22 but fourth time ends up not being the charm for the actor director pairing the duo previously worked together on a Trilogy of DACA drama Thrillers focusing on a Navy SEAL Mission gone wrong Lone Survivor the BP Gulf of Mexico oil rig explosion spill deep waterer Horizon and the Boston Marathon bombing Patriots Day while each of these f act-based films have clear through lines and purposes mile 22 is much choppier and suffers from its attempt to serve as the glorified pilot for a series of movies including a mile 22 sequel that's already being written mile 22 isn't lacking when it comes to hard-hitting action but is undone by its confused narrative and over rushed attempt at franchise building wallberg stars in mile 22 as James Silva a high functioning but antisocial individual who was recognized by the US government as being a prodigy at a young age and ultimately recruited to work for the Sia's most elite secret task force OverWatch while stationed in Indonesia Silva and his fellow OverWatch members Including Alice care Lauren Cohan and Sam snow Rond Rousey are approached by Li nor IO uwise a native police officer who claims to have information regarding a missing chemical substance that could be used to make highly destructive and radioactive dirty bombs nor then demands that he be flown out of the country to Safety in the US before he Reveals His Hand it soon becomes apparent that whatever information nor is holding on to it's important enough that the local government is willing to have him killed in order to prevent it from being leaked with the details locked away in an unhackable flash drive that will degrade in 8 hours and nor being the only one who knows the password to access it Silva and the rest of the OverWatch Squad led by their boss John malovich who is code named mother thus assemble in order to transport nor to an extraction Point located 22 mi from his current position at the Indonesian US Embassy but can they get there in one piece mile 22 was originally presented as being a standalone action thriller starring wallberg UWI and Rousey based on a script by Graham Roland creator of Amazon 's upcoming Jack Ryan series back when it was first announced in 2015 however 2 years later wallberg bird and STX revealed that it had since been redesigned to serve as the first installment in a Trilogy with relative newcomer Lee Carpenter now credited for writing the screenplay from a story co-credited to Roland unfortunately the final movie result plays out more as a slap Dash origin story for James Silva than a compelling introduction to the character and His World similarly there are a number of supporting players and subplots here that feel like either their roles were reduced from an earlier script draft or they were added to lay the groundwork for a mile 22 franchise despite being mostly irrelevant to this movie the same goes for a mostly pointless narrative framing device that involves Silva being debriefed by a mysterious Superior officer while mile 22 touches upon certain recurring themes from Berg previous films see heroism and sacrifice in the line of duty the movie stabs at political commentary and relevance are as jumbled as its narrative certain elements like a plot thread involving the Russian government feel as though they were shoehorned in here in order to make the movie feel more timely but they inadvertently wind up muddying its subtext instead mile 22 also literally looks as Rough Around the Edges as its story feels Berg uses the same gorilla Gilla film making techniques here as he has on his previous features including heavy use of security camera footage Alla patriots day but there's less method to his approach this time around the director and his crew which includes his trusty camera operator turned cinematographer jacqu jrit and frequent editors Melissa Lawson Chun and Colby parkerjar in turn deliver action sequences here that feel chaotic but not as nerve-wracking or intense to watch as intended at the center of this storm is Walberg as Silva a realistic superhero think Ben afful in the accountant who can lead the mile 22 franchise Silva comes off as being a cross between walberg's foulmouthed sergeant from The Departed and a quazi sociopathic genius in the vein of Dr Gregory House from House MD but lacks the sharp wit and glimpses of a richer Humanity beneath the hardened exterior that makes those characters engaging it doesn't help that Sil and the other characters here are largely developed through hamfisted dialogue rather than their behavior Cohan as Alice is fleshed out the most among the supporting players in mile 22 but even her storyline which involves a young daughter as well as an orary ex-husband portrayed by Berg himself struggles to leave much of an emotional impact on the other hand cohan's experience killing zombies on The Walking Dead serves her well and she thrives while playing the action her hero during mile 22's close quarter combat scenes and shootouts while Rousey makes for an equally convincing action star here as she has in movies past U is easily the scen stealer in the film The actor Marshall artist made a real name for himself with his bone crunching brawls from The Raid movies and further showcases his expertise as both a stuntman and fight choreographer with his efforts on Mile 22 ui's Lor is also intriguing when it comes to the mystery around his true motivation enough so that in a number of ways he's more interesting than Silva as a character in the end mile 22 feels like it could have been a solid bornes Thriller had it not been clumsily reformatted to launch a mark wallberg franchise while some aspects still work on the whole the film is a bit of a mess and a pretty noticeable stepdown and quality from Walberg and Berg's previous true story inspired collaborations together mile 22 is better made and acted than other action movies that have been dumped in mid to late August in the past admittedly not a high bar to clear but it's probably best saved for a future home rental for those interested in checking it out as for those mile 22 multimedia IP plans the box office will have the final say on that matter positive elements with all the bullets and explosions in Mayhem we don't have time to get to know most most of the OverWatch team members very well and when we do get to know a few Silva for instance what we see isn't particularly Winsome still these folks are trying to safeguard lots of lives and you don't need to be likable to be a hero Silva understands that his mission is more important than any one team member but when one of his compatriots a mother struggling to find ways to connect with her young daughter despite her demanding dangerous job is in serious danger Silva and lie decide to help her even though that rescue operation endangers the mission spiritual elements Silva chats with team member Alice about their morally squishy jobs there is no Absolution no wash and clean what we do he says though he jokingly cynically acknowledges that if you buy into Jesus there may be a way it's an interesting line given that Mark Wahlberg who plays Silva is a devout Catholic with an admittedly checkered past we also hear a passing sarcastic reference to Heaven Li is called by some a witch Silva later asks him if he is one no lie answers are you sexual content Silva barges into a woman's locker room where Alice is getting out of a shower though she's covered by a towel lie as part of a physical psychological exam strips down to his underwear we wind up seeing quite a bit of his physique because violent content he's attacked by Apparent orderly actually agents for the Asian country in which the movie takes place the fight is incredibly violent parts of it are replayed via security footage combatants battle with fists and feet needles and broken glass and parts of a shattered bed frame but lie eventually kills both of them Gorly stabbing one in the neck and twisting the metal as the gruesome kudagra it's one of several such moments in what may be one of the most brutal movies of the year in the opening scene Silva and his Squad invade a Suburban House filled with Russians first apprehending them and then when given the go-ahead executing them one an 18-year-old operative leaps out of a window from the now burning home and lands in front of the barrel of Silva's gun Silva asks if he's being ordered to kill the grotesquely burned man in broad daylight out in the open he's told yes he must kill him and so he does we see several people shot and killed and often bloodily so one man is shot several times and he slips on his own blood before someone walks up to him and puts the final bullet in his forehead others are shot in the knees before being killed with another slug to the neck explosions claim plenty of casualties two we see cars Homes apartments and businesses blown up via creative means one OverWatch member after being seriously wounded in a car explosion waits for her enemies to come close before arming a pair of grenades killing them all some asants attack others with blades or other sharp implements one man has his cheek sliced open with a Shard of glass his as salant then jams the glass into the palm of his hand piercing it all the way through moreover lie seems to be something of a martial arts expert which results in some gentic painfully choreographed fight scenes that include snapped legs and broken necks someone nearly kills another character with a choke hold if the cesium is used as is feared we hear that the ensuing fatalities could be astronomical Silva reminds his team what happened to Japanese citizens who suffered from radiation poisoning at Hiroshima and Nagasaki their skin Silva said would slip off their bodies like gloves we see pictures of the de station of those two cities news Clips likewise showcase some realworld violence we learn that Silva's family died in a car crash in Old family video footage we see a young Silva getting into a couple of fights as well as hearing school officials talking about the need to curb his violence crude or profane language Silva and others use more than 60 fword along with about 15s words other profanities include a whole bch and H along with a Litany of others including a harsh slang phrase referencing oral sex God's name is misused twice once with DN while jesus' name is abused once other negative elements Alice is involved in a messy custody dispute with her ex-husband phone calls and texts home often descend into heated profanity laced accusations and recriminations Silva has a host of person it disorders it would seem which makes him treat the people around him pretty shabbily conclusion mile 22 is dumb frenetic and owe so bloody a featurelength romp through a hurricane of fists and feet and death for some of course that's exactly what they're looking for in a late Summer movie Diversion lots of action little thought Mark wallberg With A Gun upand cominging martial arts actor iiko uwise with um kicks and stuff take my money but for Discerning filmgoers whether we're talking aesthetic or ethical discernment mile 22 is a Flatout fail what you need to know mile 22 is a high octane Thriller it stars starring Mark wallberg as James Silva a highly trained brilliant paramilitary operative trying to protect an asset with valuable information working in a Southeast Asian country to find some deadly explosives the man turns himself over to the Americans saying he knows exactly where the explosives are however he'll only give the intel if the American agents get him to the United States alive this means Silva will have to enact a top secret operation to move the informant 22 mil to an air strip while an army of goons try to kill them once mile 22 gets going the action and intensity never cease a major problem is the movie's writing and structure there's no clim the movie builds to what could have been an epic showdown but instead leaves that Showdown for a sequel mile 22 has some moral moments of protecting innocent lives but there's a message it's okay to give up morals for the greater good this is where the movie becomes problematic excessive violence and abundant foul language warrant Extreme Caution for mile 22 content dominant world viw and other worldview contentments light moral patriotic worldview of protecting lives domestically but also protecting innocent civilian lives of other nations especially children there's a positive reference to Jesus being forgiving but with an implication that Jesus isn't for the main characters because they're soldiers who have a job to do in stopping violent villains mixed with unbiblical Pagan elements contending it's ultimately okay to give up morals for the greater good of the country and National Security foul language at least at least 80 obscenities including about 60 FW and five profanities violence some very strong and graphic violence and lots of action violence with many people getting shot stabbed with various objects including needles shards of glass broken bottles and other sharp items arms and legs are broken various brutal killings with glass some of these are excruciating to watch and can't be described car accidents explosions and brutal wounds and burns shown more detail mile 22 is a high octane Thriller starring Mark Walberg as James Silva a highly trained brilliant paramilitary operative trying to protect an asset with valuable information about a major attack the opening credits reveal that Silva is mentally unstable and prone to Violent outbursts but extremely intelligent serving in the military and CIA Silva now is a part of a top secret Tactical team that's aided by a remote team called OverWatch who keep an eagle eye view on Silva's operatives protecting them and keeping them on target the opening scenes shows Silva's operatives and OverWatch in action as they infiltrate a KGB Safe House in the United States and kill everyone involved 18 months later Silva and his guys are in a corrupt and dangerous Southeast Asian country looking for a deadly compound that could set off the worst terrorist attacks in history on Silva's team is Alice an equally hot-tempered operative grappling with a divorce and trying to maintain a relationship with her daughter now that she's a secret agent out of the blue a local cop Lor approaches the US Embassy with a hard drive saying he knows exactly where the explosives are that Silva is hunting the locations are on the hard drive but if they don't get him out of the country with Asylum to the s in 8 hours the drive will erase itself and they'll get nothing Silva and Alice at first refuse to give lie anything but then two men try to kill lie while he's in their custody at the embassy and they realize that the country hosting them will do anything to silence lie to extract Lie from the country Silva's Superior enacts the OverWatch protocol where Silva and his team are officially fired from the government and become ghosts to avoid any blowback on the US government the remote OverWatch team is assembled and Silva and his team of deadly men and women are sent out with lie all they have to do is travel 22 miles through the city to an airport strip where a military plane is waiting getting there will prove more difficult and more deadly than they imagined once mile 22 gets going the action and intensity never cease director Peterburg makes mile 22 his fourth collaboration with wallberg Lone Survivor Patriots Day and deep waterer Horizon and it's by far their most brutal and morally Gray movie Walberg consistently plays intense prone to anger characters and Silva is all that many times over however he stays a single faceted character and viewers never really see a human side to him at one point he shows he cares for the lives of innocent civilians even if they're not American also though he's ready to leave some of his injured soldiers behind to die he eventually goes out of his way to save Alice a major problem with the movie's writing and structure is that there's no real climax the movie builds to what could have been an epic showdown but instead leaves that Showdown for a sequel consequently most viewers will be asking themselves that was it as for the movie's morally gray worldview the OverWatch head played by John malovich at one point calls their service a higher form of patriotism because these guys will do what no one else will all of this begs the question how much is too much while the movie makes no judgments about the types of operations these agents must perform it presents some glimpses of the moral lines these soldiers care about such as protecting random children in the street who could get caught in a crossfire otherwise however virtually anything else goes for the sake of protecting National Security in one scene Silva comments to a frustrated Alice about how many people they've killed you should try the Jesus guy Silva says I hear he's really forgiving clearly for the heroes in this story Jesus is out of the question Silva believes that sometimes you need Heroes who do bad things for good reasons it's a flawed and unbiblical worldview but it's also disconnected from the rest of the story since they spend the entire plot trying to save someone and all of the killing that happens is in self-defense from a viewing perspective mile 22 is overly violent and almost relishes in some of the gruesome ways bad guys are killed there's also abundant foul language throughout that makes this movie inappropriate for teenagers and warrants Extreme Caution for adults Mark Walberg and Peter Berg are back and they're here to kick butts the latest collaboration from the actor and director who brought you Lone Survivor deep waterer Horizon and Patriots Day isn't a serious dramatic Thriller of about a real life tragedy it's a souped up action thriller about Good Guys bad guys fighting in guns and it might have been a cool movie if the filmmakers didn't take this ridiculous material too seriously Mark Wahlberg stars as James Sila a Black Ops specialist who's so smart he has to slap his wrist with a rubber band just to stop himself from being so smart all the time his team consists of actors desperately trying to make the most out of only one character characteristic including angry mom Alice Lauren Cohan sneaker Enthusiast Bishop John malovich dessert deliverer William Carlo Alban and dessert recipient Sam Rond Rousey in the midst of their latest assignment in Southeast Asia their informant line nor IO UI shows up at the embassy with an ominous sounding our Robos Drive the drive contains all the information Silva needs to track down some stolen cesium AK fear powder and save the world from those who would use it to make dirty bombs but the drive will self-destruct in 8 hours unless Silva and his off the books OverWatch team extract Lor from the country it's 22 mi from their base to the airport and everyone in the local government and a couple of random cafe enthusiasts just to be silly about it are trying to kill them the last half of Mile 22 is a Non-Stop action Extravaganza in which people kill people or get killed or some combination of the two pretty straightforward right the problem is Peterburg has developed a signature Style by now it's a choppy Macho you are here and you are constantly distracted by details approach that when done right can amplify based on a true stories like Lone Survivor and Patriots day but in a fictional pulpy setting like mile22 it's a distraction the screenplay paints this world with broad impressionistic Strokes but Berg brings it to life with something akin to photo realism and it falls apart under that kind of scrutiny worst of all the fast editing that gives Peter Berg's dramatic scenes gravitas makes his action sequences hard to follow IO uwise is mostly wasted in mile 22 the star of The Raid The Raid 2 and headshot is one of the most exciting Marshall Arts performers in the Contemporary action genre but he only gets a couple of moments to unleash his physical prowess and when he does Berg uses so many edits that it robs the actor of his wow factor Iko youwise looks like he can do anything when you show him doing it in one take when a director uses five cuts to show youwise pulling off just one move it's not nearly as exciting impressive or even believable Ronda Rousey makes the most out of her small role and Lauren Cohan proves herself a capable action star despite her under WR character but the actor who suffers the most in mile 22 is Mark Walberg who plays a hero who so haphazardly written that the other characters can't agree on which mental disorder he suffers from he's supposedly some kind of Super Genius but his dialogue frequently consists of repeated words and phrases which makes him sound like he escaped from an Edwood movie he also randomly quotes books that you can't quite picture him ever reading because he's also the kind of of guy who makes jokes in the middle of shootouts with bad guys who just murdered his friends mile 22 is an energetic motion picture but it's too simplistic for this kind of heavy-handed treatment the action stars look like they're holding back and the dramatic stars look like they're trying to win a shouting match but there sure is a lot of action going on here and if you're a DI hard fan of the genre you might find something to latch on to it's just a shame that with a pedigree this impressive the best mile 22 can get is you might find something to latch on to this film directed by Peter Berg screenplay by Lee Carpenter Story by Graham Roland Lee Carpenter produced by Peter Berg
