Boston hotel workers now on strike. Good evening. I'm Darren Botelho. So they walked off the job at around 4:00 this morning after their contract expired at midnight. They've been on the picket lines all day. Our Erin Logan joins us live right now outside the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel. And Erin, it sounds like they're not leaving any time soon. Darren. 4500 workers authorized the strike back in August, but 900 of them officially went on strike this morning. And they made it clear, like you said, they are not going away anytime soon. They plan on being out here for a few days. This was the same scenario at three other Boston hotels. If we don't get it, shut it down. This is just one group of the nearly 900 Boston hotel workers on the picket line Sunday. Shame on Hilton for actually bringing it to this situation since April. Unite here local 26 has been in contract negotiations with Hilton. They were holding on to Hope for the last few weeks after they overwhelmingly voted to strike. If they still couldn't reach an agreement, and they've done nothing but spit in our faces. And this is the consequence of that. Now housekeepers, bartenders, almost all service staff are standing their ground. Let's make them pay. Picketing outside the Hilton Boston Park Plaza, Hilton Boston, Logan, Fairmont, Copley and Hampton Inn Seaport. This building is open 24/7. Because of these people right here. So if you don't have respect for these people, we don't want to have a piece. Union power. The strike is part of the union's nationwide effort for workers to demand higher wages, increase pensions, protect medical insurance and enhance job protection. We're here to get better benefits, better pension. So I could retire hopefully soo. NBC 10 reached out to Hilton for a comment about this strike. A spokesperson said they are committed to negotiating in good faith to reach a fair and reasonable agreement. They can't afford the rent they can't afford groceries, they can't afford their kids take their kids out to a nice meal once in a blue moon. And the reality is, who's to blame for that? These hotel companies. And Boston City Councilor Ed Flynn showed up this morning to show his support for these hotel workers.
