Derek diit here at Kent State University outside dick Stadium where today it was the St Francis red flashes defeating the Kent State golden flashes 23 to 17 in Kent State's home opener this was the game that Kent State on paper should have ran away with but unfortunately you have to play the game between the lines and Kent State did not come out prepared to do so uh they fell behind 17 nothing um into the second quar qu it was a 50 y from M plumber the kicker from St Francis that got the scoring started then the quarterback for um for St Francis Jeff honstein he rushed in from two yards out to have the first touchdown of the game and then on a broken play of sorts two Kent Defenders seemed to get crossed up with a referee it sprung uh Gavin Thompson open he ended up uh catching the ball taking it the rest of the way for a 64 yd touchdown bringing the score to 17 to Zer and then Kent State was able to get on the board when Chan McCrae hauled in a nine-yard pass from backup quarterback Tommy ulatowski who came in on kind of a trick Gadget play um coach Burns ran it a few times having both ulatowski and starting quarterback uh Devin Carman out on the field at the same time sending Carman out uh out in motion at has kind of a wide receiver look um but um right before halftime there were two quick scores um plumber again with the field goal this one from 33 yards extended the lead to 20 to7 and then with 46 seconds left before the halftime break Luke Floria hauled in a 23 yd pass from Carman uh to cut the lead to 20 to 14 the third quarter the only score there was plumber again with a 46 ydd field goal so three field goals from plumber on the day was the big difference and then in the fourth quarter needing nine points to tie 10 or more to win uh Kent State opted for the field goal a 44 y from Andrew Glass that he split the uprights on the ensuing onside kick was recovered by the red flashes giving Kent State golden flashes their second loss to start the season the O and two golden flashes now next week make that trip down to nean Stadium in Tennessee to take on the volunteers then after that it's a trip to Happy Valley to face off with the Penn State miny Lions so the schedule is not getting easier at this point for the golden flashes and Coach Kenny Burns in his second season here at Kent State for beland media
