seafaring style icon of hyanis this is just the private Jackie barely keeping it together look at you Onasis said how can you be seen looking like that you don't see Gloria in that kind of get up what is your problem for a brief moment Jackie looked hurt and embarrassed and then she pulled herself together and said yes don't they look great [Music] hi welcome back to my channel I'm Jess canel and we are working our way through ask not the cedes and the women they destroyed and we are working our way through Woman by woman and we have reached the third of four chapters that we get on Jackie Kennedy and in this chapter we see her become Jackie Kennedy Onasis I do want to say this is probably episode 13 of what will be 20 episodes our next book that we will be reading is Chap atic by Leo deore I shared with you guys that I was really fascinated by Chap atic and open to digging more and I found this great book and I think it's the one that we're going to do the man who wrote it uh went through a lot of grief in writing it and in researching it and it it actually has a primary source as its informant so we will be looking at atic It's called Power privilege and the Ted Kennedy coverup so this book has given us lots of information about Mary Joe kekney and Joan Kennedy Ted Kennedy's wife but this book will give us a deeper look in this one particular incident of Chapa quintic so I hope you'll join me for it I just wanted to go ahead and let you know if you want to get the book want to start pre-reading that's kind of your heads up that this is coming but today we are going through Jackie Kennedy Onasis last time we saw Jackie she was doing her post assassination planning if you guys didn't get a chance to look at that go back and look at the bonus episode where we went through the Life Magazine of JFK's funeral and we also looked at a book called a torch's past which was a commemorative issue with photography it started on the day November 23rd 1963 of the Assassin ation the photos took us through that point through the funeral procession and lying in state and all of that so go back and look at that episode if you're interested at all those were some great photos and they had even some interesting articles about the questions people had about the assassination so that was interesting today now we are five years post assassination almost exactly it's octo October 1968 Ari Onasis was a Greek shipping magnate a billionaire an anti-semite A vulgarian and A bisexual with a string of bought and paid for young men that he savagely beat after sex on October 17th 1968 he and Jackie Kennedy 39 years old to his 62 announced that they would marry in 3 days time their engagement made the front page of the New York Times above the fold the reaction here is anger shock and dismay read the headline Jackie was not called by her first name she was still Mrs John F Kennedy the German second most read newspaper in Europe put this headline all the world is indignant a Fleet Street tabloid Jackie Weds blank check Stockholm's paper Jackie how could you the Atlanta Constitution Jackie fell for onassis's plush yacht Rome's paper JFK dies a second time the Vatican denounced her Jackie Kennedy faultless Widow and America's most admired woman was no more Jackie Kennedy was talked and written about as a prostitute Who Sold herself on the global Marketplace an unscrupulous Viper who had stolen her sister's lover Lee her sister was still married to the Polish Prince Stannis LA radwell and she had been involved with Ari and was hoping to marry him until Jackie became the world's most famous Widow this is something that Jackie and Lee had in common with the Kennedy men an incestuous tendency to compete for lovers and sometimes share them Jackie felt certain that she and Lee would get past this less so as to whether America would forgive her Jackie's psyche was not a part of the national conversation nor was her trauma after Bobby Kennedy's assassination four months prior so Bobby Kennedy assassinated in June so now we have Jackie marrying Ari Onasis she had actually predicted that Bobby would be assassinated Bobby had not died instantly as Jack had he was conscious after he was shot and later in the hospital the doctors broke the news that Bobby was brain dead it had been Jackie who persuaded Ethel to turn off the machines so she had been strong both days of both assassinations but in the week to follow Jackie experienced episodes of psychosis she would be in her apartment Fifth Avenue in New York and suddenly Jack and Bobby were alive but Jack was Bobby or Bobby was Jack and both were her husbands then she'd be in the back of the Lincoln Continental with Jack holding his head and then the Los Angeles hospital and right beside Bobby and the respirator she was having nightmares Vivid and unceasing she was as inconsolable as ever reminiscent of the months after Jack's death when little Caroline told her school teacher my mommy cries all the time Bobby had been more than a brother-in-law to Jackie before his assassination in the wake of Jack's death the two of them destroyed and disconsolate they became romantically involved it began not long after Jackie and the children relocated to a Georgetown house but were unable to afford the mortgage so Bobby negotiated the price down from 215,000 to 195,000 and he had 100,000 paid out of Kennedy funds but the help he gave her wasn't just practical it was Bobby alone who could Rouse her from her grief from sleeping her days away from drinking and weeping and fearing ever going out again she told Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr that she couldn't find slumber at night despite taking all the sleeping pills and that medications did nothing to stop her mind from obsessively replaying the assassination which makes sense she told Roosevelt that Bobby Kennedy was the only person keeping her from killing herself for Bobby the same was true of Jackie he had been The Sibling closest to Jack and the one who as attorney general had done whatever it took to protect his brother he was the only family member grieving as deeply as Jackie the only blood Kennedy who could not adhere to the family Mantra move forward get on with it stop feeling sorry for yourself life is for the living Bobby already wiry began dropping an alarming around of weight he too cried all the time he couldn't sleep and now he began spending more time at Jackie's more time with her children than with his own like Jackie he bristled when well-meaning people including his wife Ethel tried to explain Jack's murder as God's plan or suggest that he was in a better place faith for Bobby and Jackie had its limits one of Jackie's friends tried to offer the consolation that at least Jack is resting peacefully with God that's the silliest thing I've ever heard Susan Jackie said and she never had another social engagement with that friend Bobby found Ethel's religiosity equally unbearable when a guest brought up a government issue that was being discussed Ethel responded Well Jack will take care of that he's up in heaven and he's looking down on us he'll show us what to do Bobby replied the voice you just heard belongs to the wife of the Attorney General of the United States let's hear no more from her wow I do in response to that you guys know I'm a Christian it is possible to have great confidence in an all powerful all-wise God who is providentially working out good and also grieve and not be a jerk while other people are grieving in fact we really ought to grieve Jesus himself wept when Lazarus his friend died he did end up raising Lazarus us from the dead actually but that didn't erase the fact that he stopped and grieved the loss of his friend and the sorrow he felt for those who remained Jesus set an example for us of grieving well and not just pretending that an eternal plan erases the real grief and sorrow that we feel when Earthly events just aren't right and so in these situations Jackie and Bobby are actually feeling truer things like don't try to shut off my grief with some sort of empty platitude that doesn't help and it's instructive for us that um when someone else is dealing with great grief faith and God are not to be used as a bludgeoning weapon in that situation well through late 1963 and early 1964 Bobby was on the verge of quitting public life and never running for elected office but Jackie talked him out of it when one was in the depths of Despair it was the other who pulled them out their relationship turns more and more into this this special horrible Bond some people would call it a trauma Bond I think that's the proper term for this sort of relationship maren Callahan puts it this way Jackie and Bobby's Affair which was on and off from 196 64 to 1968 was whispered about in their Social Circles and well known among the Press Corp Jackie and Bobby would be seen dining out in New York City openly kissing and cuddling but because it was the kennedies and because of what had happened to Jack and because of Jackie's Strength in the days that followed the secret had been kept well now now that she's marrying Aron nasis she has left the Kennedy Compound and the Press is no longer protecting her if they are killing kennedies Jackie said my children are the number one targets I want to get out of this country Aristotle Onasis had a private island a private Army and a yacht the size of a Navy destroyer it was spring of 1968 and Jackie was done being what she had said to Teddy white all those years before the Witter Kennedy as Bobby's presidential campaign heated up around that same time he tried to talk her out of the marriage he had known Onasis for years and he hated him and the feeling was Mutual Onasis worried that if Bobby ever became president he would keep onassis's oil tankers from ever docking in American ports and Bobby had the tarity to call him years prior and tell him to stop sleeping with Jackie's sister Lee the princess radel Onasis could not bear the hypocrisy he knew that Bobby and Jack Kennedy were both having affairs with Marilyn Monroe Bobby Onasis had said to him you and Jack F your movie Queen and I'll F my princess there's no love lost between these two men and all of it is like this big sexual soup where they're all sharing partners and they're married but not acting married and these two it's it's all a mess like that Onasis was offering Jackie the one thing that Bobby could not marriage the possibility that he was endangering Bobby's presidential chances was something that surely gave the shipping magnate great pleasure a jack Ari Union would be public relations disaster it would make Jackie a Kennedy apostate it would cast the entire Kennedy family out of Jack's revered Legacy and into the realm of gossip and tabloids for God's sake Jackie Bobby told her this could cost me five states which is all just back to the Kennedy's being all about the candidate well she agrees to wait until after the election if Bobby won then Ethel would surely become the next first lady and Jackie did not want to be some sort of dowager hanging around waiting and just like ornamental and kind of like a fragment of some previous first family so to her she felt like right after the election I'll go ahead and marry Ari and I'll get out of the way the next hurdle she thought was her mother-in-law Rose Jackie broke the news strategically by slipping the news to Jean the sister-in-law that she knew would tell the whole family this is the same one that if you remember had written the handwritten letter to Marilyn Monroe kind of welcoming her as Bobby's new dish so Rose got the news and she was stunned and it was a lot to take in this little man this older man a divorced Greek would now become Caroline and John's stepfather what was Jackie thinking but then Rose began to think a little more about it and she knew that Jackie would never do anything to hurt the children and she remember remembers that she had once desired a second chapter she wished for an opportunity to have some other solution by which her children could be provided for and the fact that Jackie is coming for her approval actually meant a lot to her by being supportive she realizes she can continue to have a relationship with Caroline and John Jr and so when Jackie calls rose without hesitation gives her her blessing Jackie was blown away so Jackie said this she of all people was the one who encouraged me he's a good man don't worry here I was I was married to her son and I had his children but she was the one telling me if you think this is best go ahead Jackie called Rose bellam mer French for mother-in-law it was her way of telling rose that she would always be Jackie's second mother even as she took this way out of the Kennedy Crucible she actually wanted out she wanted out from being an American Saint up on this High pedestal and she wanted to smash that image to bits marrying Ari would do that for her and she wrote another former lover of hers Ari is lonely and he wants to protect me from being lonely only I can decide if he can and I did decide I know it comes as a surprise to many people but they see things for me that I never wanted for myself our Mar had actually been in Jackie's life for a long time they had first met in the late 1950s when she and Jack accepted his invitation for drinks on his yacht the Christina o the kennedies moved in the same circles as the Winston Churchills whom Ari also knew and the infamous Greek wanted to meet this young man who everyone said would become an American president someday it was Jackie though who impressed him years after that initial meeting he claimed to remember exactly what she was wearing and her movie star [Music] demeanor he noticed that she wasn't shy and she wasn't bored but she also wasn't conspicuously friendly she just had a way of making you look at her after the death of baby Patrick Arie invited Jackie for an Extended Stay on his yacht and she accepted much to Jack's chrin it turned out to be quite healing for her and it was a kindness that she never forgot when Jack was killed AR was Among The Chosen Few who got to stay at the White House in the immediate aftermath arri had always seen beneath Jackie's Prim veneer to what he called her carnal Soul he wasn't conventionally attractive like Jack but he was highly sexual he noticed that Jackie had something provocative and willful about her and he knew that he wanted it upon the engagement to Onasis they both knew that the world saw Arie as Jackie's sugar daddy Jackie and Arie could claim a second shot at love all they wanted but this marriage was also transactional the merger of two Global Brands and no woman could compete with the Widow Kennedy her financial adviser had actually encouraged her to have Ari pay $20 million to make the marriage happen his response was says your client could price herself right out of the market this is also blunt and painful to read well Jackie wound up getting $3 million up front from arri one million for each of her children 600,000 a year for travel and millions more in the event of a divorce or AR's death there were also stipulations as to how many times a year she would be required to have sex with Ari she insisted on separate bedrooms at shared residences there would be a marriage in every sense except for children they both agreed no children on October 20th 1968 Jackie wed arri on his private island of scorpios wearing a high necked kneelength white Valentino dress her hair pulled back in a half ponytail and tied off with a white ribbon it was a rebuke to the church that had denounced her dressing like a young girl taking her first communion and to everyone who thought that she was greedy or had gone mad no Jaclyn Kennedy was quite in her right mind she was a middle-aged icon who had Rewritten her first husband's problematic history and had just negotiated a marriage contract containing 170 Clauses definitely sounds like a contract for a merger rather than a love affair most importantly she had successfully killed off her former Incarnation Jackie Onasis would be a different person entirely let the world recoil in disgust all the better all the more freedom for her she thought AR said it this way Jackie needs a small Scandal to bring her alive and he was right Jackie was reanimated by this decision and the public became newly fascinated with her gone gone were the prim lady jackets and bonts and gone were the bras Jackie was dressing for a new era for the dawning of the 1970s she was shedding old skin and she was thinking back to the Ambitions of her youth when she had dreamed of being a great riter she was Modern now in tight white capries tissue thin black teas with her nipples poking through she strolled the streets of Greece and Italy Barefoot she wore her hair long and loose parted down the middle wrapped in a Chic low ballet bun she adopted two accessories that would both be named after her a slouchy Gucci handbag and enormous black sunglasses that obscured half her face the effect was pure Greta Garbo look at me don't look at me I can't bear it if you don't look at me she was entering the most openly sexual chapter of her life she was no longer the woman that Jack Kennedy humiliated in marrying Arie she had publicly triumphed nearly 1 month to the day after her second wedding Jackie in Greece with AR's sister Artemis broke down it was November 22nd 1968 the 5th anniversary of Jack's assassination in all that time she hadn't been able to stop talking about that day in graphic detail it was like a compulsion I'm a freak she said always be a freak sometimes I think I will never be able to truly be happy again she had aged rapidly one woman who met Jackie in this era was shocked Jackie as ever photographed beautifully but those big black sunglasses were obscuring tiny lines and cracks her face was like a spiderweb of Anguish she suffered from excruciating pulsing pain in her neck which she believed was permanent nerve damage from clutching Jack's shattered head in her lap the horrors of that day lived on in her body her face and in her nightmares which of course it would we know about trauma we understand that these things do affect us for a long time I just think it's fascinating that she carried even in her neck the memory of that day of clutching his head there in her lap are Mar spoiled Jackie expensive Jewels would be nestled on her breakfast tray she lunched she sunbathed as in the White House y'all listen to this she had 12 pairs of hand embroidered pink sheets that were all Italian and she always traveled with them she demanded that her bed linens be cleaned and ironed every morning and every afternoon after her daily nap wow she was fascinated by Greece and Greek culture yet she began finding herself touring ruins and Antiquities alone as she had suspected her husband was already bored with his latest acquisition and he had beg secretly Romancing his old flame the famous opera singer Maria callus there were still days when Jackie couldn't get out of bed oh how the tabloids loved this detail Jackie O spoiled and Laing her days away wasting them killing time nothing else going on in that little head of hers but where to fly next or what to buy next or what she was going to do next no one saw it for what it was deep depression and PTSD I don't know if this is just the life of the Rich and Famous I don't know if this is just that we're getting little Snippets and maybe there's details not being told but I just wrote where were the children I don't know if you guys have felt this as I've been reading but the last picture we were left with was that Jackie was trying to do this big thing in completing her husband's life and setting the Legacy and setting that mythology because she knew she had the big job of raising these children that was going to be hers and so I was expecting for this chapter to include a little bit more about she got them settled with this awesome private tutor or they found this wonderful school with you know excellent privacy or I I don't you know something something about the children and so far we're multiple Pages five six seven eight we are nine pages into this chapter and we have not heard a word about the plans or the the way that she's cared for the children I just think it's very weird I don't know if it's because there's not information about this period I don't know if it's that Marine Callahan just chose to go a different direction if you guys know what happened to the children during this season I would be interested to know that back to our reading no one on earth could relate to what Jackie had been through not the scale or the scope of it everyone can relate to grief but she carries this enormous burden of Jack's Legacy the shrinks the pills vodka and cigarettes all took off the edge sometimes but then she'd suddenly find herself back in Texas with her husband's brain splattered across her lap her self- exposed to more gunshots so what if she shopped she thought so what who cares if I'm outshopping part of this is yes Jackie loves to acquire nice things she loved Beauty and she also had a deep fear of poverty that had been drilled into her by her mother that there's this irrational fear driving her all the time no matter how much money she has it's never going to be enough and so she feels all of that um but no matter the conventional wisdom that Jackie was just a gold digger every woman still wanted to look like her and be her they even referenced this Boston band in the punk scene at that time that had these lines in one of their songs I want to be Jackie O nases I want to wear a pair of dark sunglasses so she is still still a global icon her face was her credit card she could walk up to any Airport ticket counter and board any Olympus flight because her husband owned the airport did this make her like a prostitute there were times when arri treated her like one he would summon Jackie from her New York apartment at a moment's notice and then send her away just as swiftly after sex to remind her of what she really was he said he actually loved to have sex with Jackie in spaces where people could see them behind a first class curtain on an airplane or in a little tender that was Tethered to his yacht or in his bedroom with the door cracked open he got off on defiling this American icon of dignity showing that he owned her and he could humiliate her but for Jackie there was something novel in AR's open lust Jack had never been so Covetous of her so passionate Arie did unlock something in Jackie he loosened her up sexually his vulgarity unlike Jack's was out in the open at least one could think the worst about him but at least Aron nasus wasn't a hypocrite I think this is really interesting because he shows this exhibitionism and a lack of discreet care for her in this most sensitive area of life where you could feel very very vulnerable and yet it feels like a step up from Jack's open dismissiveness and promiscuity she at least feels desired by Aristotle Onasis and she didn't feel that possession and desire from Jack in the same way from her angle it was all the other women that he was Desiring and not ever her so this is at least novel to her to be desired in this way no one criticized him for taking the opportunity to buy her and no one accused him of bad behavior when he began cheating on Jackie just two weeks after their wedding with the opera singer no one reported his betrayal when he gave the paparazzi the exact information they needed to go shoot photos of her with long lenses while she was sunbathing nude on his private island so she took him up on this offer of privacy and yet she's not actually being granted privacy in this most intimate area of her life no one stood up for her when Hustler magazine published the pictures of Jackie exercising topless no one at the time reported rumors that he had his enemies killed including Bobby Kennedy Jackie wouldn't have heard that rumor but she knew that Onasis and Bobby each had a vengeful streak to them Onasis had been among those who had known that Marilyn Monroe's house was bugged he was one who suspected that her death had not been an accidental overdose or a suicide he thought the Kennedy Brothers had had something to do with it his hatred for Bobby was not tempered by Jack's assassination years after Ari and Jackie had died an esteemed biographer who had worked with Ari reported that Onasis had paid a member of the PLO The pasian Liberation Organization that regularly extorted Onasis and other airlines in exchange for not hijacking their planes he reported that Onasis had paid that member of the PLO to kill Bobby some historians believe it and others don't but its existence as a theory speaks to Aristotle Onasis as being quite a monster when she agreed to marry Ari Jackie felt as though he were casting her in a movie Ari as odyusa she had buried an essential part of herself her independence to play that role for him she was a kept woman on Scorpios she didn't love it her mind was too sharp and her creativity was too suppressed well two years into the book on Socrates and the men were talking and she just lifts up her head and says do you think that Socrates is real or fictional what is the matter with you he raged why do you have to talk about such stupid things don't you ever stop to think before you open your mouth she fled in tears and a few days later he gives Jackie a gold bracelet to apoll izee it's interesting she sought wealth and yet now she's finding that it's not enough it never is Fame never is enough sex is Never Enough wealth is Never Enough these things can't satisfy us they aren't meant to Jackie had fallen in with a crowd in New York City that included Andy Warhol the famous artist and through Warhol she meets this psychiatrist in private practice called Dr Chris as an experiment she reaches out to Dr Chris for advice Nixon had invited her and her children to the White House for a private visit but she hadn't been back since the assassination and she was afraid of of the emotions it might bring up Dr Chris suggested that Jackie's upset could actually be due to a different trauma that all of Jack's constant infidelities the use of the pool in the ways that he did the use of the marital bed in the ways that he did the the truth about what their lives had actually been like in the White House might smack her in the face and feel like an assault and the doctor says maybe facing your fears would be helpful and maybe it could be good for your children so that they can experience the White House again through the generosity of this other first family so Jackie took that advice and was glad that she had taken it it turned out to be true so she began seeing Dr Chris regular and she finds it liberating she could talk about her private torments Dr Chris diagnosed Jackie with PTSD and explained to her that her trauma had as much to do with November 22nd 1963 as it did with her marriage to Jack and that made sense to Jackie she still had so much rage towards Jack for everything that he had put her through he hadn't come home when she delivered baby Arabella for all the other women women there were so many women the lies and the selfishness and hiding behind her skirt like he was a happy family man while he actually ran around behind her back and sometimes right where she could find the evidence for being such a terrible husband she finally had been able to say this his death robbed me of my chance to be angry with him he went out in such a blaze of glory how could there never been room for her rage how could she ever allow herself to feel what she felt that a part of her hated him so she feels good sharing all of this but even this therapy provides her with no escape from Jack she learns through her stepbrother that Dr Chris had actually also treated another iconic troubled woman Marilyn Monroe it was Dr Chris who had forcibly institutionalized her when her brother-in-law told her about Dr Chris she could not comprehend why Chris had not disclosed this to her how could you not tell me how is this relevant Dr Chris responded but Jackie was bewildered how is it not relevant so she loses this one Outlet she has to tell the complete truth with you know analytical questions coming back at her that were helpful now she's without a therapist American and European tabls were all over the rumors that Jackie and Arie were separating that Arie had had enough and most embarrassing to Jackie is this photo that's put up on the national Inquirer with her belly hanging out with the question is she or isn't she expecting she had always been really fanatical about her weight and so she goes on a crash starvation diet until she loses the weight Jackie begins having panic attacks and outbursts and still taking drugs tranquilizers to sleep possibly amphetamines to kill her hunger she lost 24 pounds in nine days and she could barely stand up she wound up in the hospital and the European press reported that Jackie Kennedy might be on her deathbed a friend responded by saying not so Jackie's illness is Onasis it's false that Jackie Kennedy has cancer said one of her intimate friends but she is in a disastrous spiritual condition and is not well Arie is making his affair with callus exceedingly public and Jackie is now reliving the humiliation that Jack had dispensed to her on a global scale Ari loved flaunting callus to denigrate Jackie everybody knows three things about Aron nases he would say I'm effing Maria Callas I'm effing Jackie Kennedy and I'm effing Rich what a guy well now he's about to lose Jackie Dr Chris may have been problematic but she had helped Jackie to realize she had a right to be angry and she had a right to refuse abuse I will help and protect you always arri had once told her her but he had changed so quickly now he has nothing but contempt for Jackie he has no tolerance for her depression her increasingly lengthy absences and rumors of her own Affairs Rose Kennedy sees what's going on and she's outraged for Jackie she flew to Greece March of 1970 and made a public show of support for her daughter-in-law Rose was sure to be photographed with Arie when Jackie greeted rose on Scorpios she was near tears Rose who had lost three sons and two daughters still thought Jackie's sadness was important something Rose was hoping to fix or at least lighten but Rose also reminded Jackie of her importance not just as a member of the dynastic kennedies but of her singular power as an American icon Rosie encouraged Jackie to lean into her strengths it would be Jackie more than anyone else three years later who would help arri grieve the death of his 24-year-old son Alexander he died in January 1973 and Jackie had lost one pregnancy and two babies so she felt she knew this kind of pain and she just held him and let him cry to distract him she took him for a trip to the states for a week to her mother and stepfather's farm estate on Rhode Island and the kindness shown to him by her family moved him and helped him get through the grief nevertheless this softening did not last last long by their fourth anniversary Arie bitter and drinking heavily began to blame Jackie for his son's death he said she was the Black Widow the living embodiment of the Kennedy curse he hit Jackie in the face and gave her a black eye that year was also the 10th anniversary of Jack's assassination magazines and books and TV coverage made reliving it inescapable all of the coverage asked the same questions what would Jack Kennedy have become how would America be different if he had lived could the country ever move past this trauma all of it was predicated on lies Jackie knew that Jack had been a good man that Jack and Jackie were a happy couple that he would have been one of our greatest presidents but she was not about to disabuse the nation of its ideas once once again she was there to comfort and sustain the myth that she had created well Jackie was on the verge of many things she was on the verge of leaving Onasis and figuring out who she wanted to be without a man she saw the political climate changing and the old writer in Jackie was coming back out so first things first she was going to get herself free and get what arri owed her for suffering through this marriage the Onasis had yet to meet the Steely Jackie The Negotiator who had gotten old Joe to pay her a million dollars for keeping up appearances who promised to come back for even more money if Jack gave her more STDs well now that she was in touch with her rage she was looking for people and places to Target and unleash it Jackie also leaned on Rose Kennedy Rose had never once said that the marriage to Arie had been a disaster or that Jackie had somehow sullied the Kennedy name she never said that a divorced Jackie would be a Kennedy liability she really gave strength to Jackie at this time in her life and Jackie took inspiration from Rose she said if I ever feel sorry for myself which is a most fatal thing I think of her I've seen her cry just twice a little bit once was at hyport when I came into her room her husband husband was ill and Jack was gone and Bobby had been killed and the other time was on a ship after her husband died we were standing on a deck at a rail together and talking about something just something that reminded her but her voice began to break she stopped herself took Jackie's hand and squeezed it and said nobody's ever going to feel sorry for me nobody's ever going to feel sorry for me and she put her chin up so that is the end of this chapter Jack is kind of giring herself up for leaving this second marriage so we see this five-year marriage to Aristotle Onasis and the ways that it gave her space to grow and change and become a different iteration of herself but also the ways that it hurt her obviously physically hurt her but also emotionally hurt her I loved seeing her come to the place of realizing she had the right to be angry I think that a lot of times women don't give ourselves that permission and I think it's really important that we reflect to one another the truth of situations it's not right for the child to hit you in the face it's not right for a husband to treat you like this it's not right to be treated that way in family gatherings or whatever for us to help one another live within the realm of truth and that's what that therapist did for her is give her the right to say yeah it's not right that that Jack treated you like that you are right to be have a righteous anger about that few questions what did you guys think of Jackie and Bobby's trauma Bond if you have any more information about that' be interesting to have that conversation in the [Music] comments the children being left out of this chapter almost see seemed intentional so again maybe it's just that Marian Callahan didn't go that direction in the book I don't know I'd love to hear your thoughts if you know about that aspect of this season of Jackie's life and then do you understand and empathize with her desire to get away and have this private entirely different existence with Aristotle Onasis does that resonate with you or do you find yourself going
