[Applause] [Music] we 5 days ago the Cleveland Guardians woke up and the Royals had a moving van parked out in front of their Penthouse apartment since then the Guardians have woke up they paid the rent and they've won three of their last four knocking the Royals back and they've opened up a 3 and 1/2 game lead in the Central Division standings this is the final meeting of the Year between Cleveland and Kansas City at Kaufman Stadium hi again everyone met under with alongside Rick Manning happy birthday yes thank you my friend your gift meaningful baseball in September nothing like it oh it's it's great I mean and this is what you look forward to but Kansas City has had the upper hand so far this year I mean you go back to the last game they had already won the first three games and Cleveland looked dead in the water and I'll tell you what they came back and they had a big seventh inning a lead off home run then they added a couple of base hits and I mean they just found a way to score and win that ball game and they desperately needed that win right there because that uh you know got them up one game and then they've been on the move ever since that point yeah I mean think about it Kansas City was going for the juggler they went to their best closer Lucas EG in that situation to try to stop the bleeding he couldn't do it so give Cleveland a lot of credit for getting up off the canvas and since then the Royals have not been able to find the wind column and the way we look at it right now they they everything is in their own hands they you know if you win and you win series nobody's going to catch you it doesn't matter they're the ones that playing catchup you just worry about your own business and everything will be just fine big rig Gavin Williams on the bump today for Cleveland we'll be back with today's first pitch coming up and we'll check in with Onre Straight Ahead Cleveland Guardians baseball is brought to to you by your Northern Ohio Toyota Kansas city where the Guardians and the Royals get ready to open up a three-game series in their final showdown of the Season you know offensively it's no mystery the Guardians recently went through a real Str uh struggle offensively at the plate unable to generate traffic unable to score with runners in scoring position and for hitting coach Chris Vala sometimes it comes down to just trying to do too much for each guy and it is it always goes back to that team approach when when we Face adversity it's always hard it's always easy for these guys to default back to like making contact and doing the things that they do well and I think when we've been at our best this year it's been hunting locations it's been looking to do damage and and getting our a swing off and and you know hunting those pitches when when you know we get punched or you know things might not be rolling like like we hope you know it's easy for these guys to try to be the hero or try to do more try to be the spark to get the the group going and that's where I think some of the the contact or the passiveness or you know what whatever whatever it may be that that is showing up you know and it gets away from the the the team mentality of we're going to hunt pitches we're going to look early in the counts to do damage knowing we can always lean lean on contact later you know that that's just kind of the nature of the game especially with the guys that we have that when we swing we tend to put the ball in play that you know sometimes that's not always the most beneficial and we end at bats because of it well I just think that you know every team goes through their struggles and I hopefully that those struggles are behind as they've swung the bats better in that Pittsburgh series and they got to come out and swing in here good uh this afternoon Andre accidentally left his microphone in the Gatorade cooler we'll try to get that ironed out when we come back for today's first pitch between the Guardians and the Royals next [Music] today's story lines are brought to you by Wayside Furniture Kyle manzardo back with a vengeance huh yesterday his first not one but two home runs in the big leagues came in the series win against the Pirates and we'll see if the Guardians can crack the code beating Kansas City has been difficult this year yeah it has with the last couple of starts from the veterans uh that the Guardians uh put on the field turned out really well let's see if Gavin Williams can maybe follow in their full footsteps but today it'll be Michael waa he will be the Chevy Network dealer starting pitcher and he's having a very nice year he's won his last seven straight decisions he's had three uh no decisions one coming against Arizona one coming against Detroit and then his last start in Cleveland where he ended up giving up five runs but he got the no decision could have had an a win but they got to the bullpen the guardian starting lineup is presented by Progressive it'll be Steven Quan leading it off Andre Sim menz in the two hole Jose Ramirez will bat third Josh Naylor hitting cleanup John Kenzie Noel is fifth Kyle manzardo the DH will bat six Lane Thomas is seventh bonay eighth and the short stop Ryan rokio batting n let's check out the Rally House defense for Kansas City looks like this in the Outfield Melendez will be in left Isbell is in Center fam Tommy fam over and right and on the infield at third base the young Garcia short Massie is the second baseman guriel is at first and Perez is doing the catching will L will call the balls and Strikes here this afternoon he's also the crew chief Lester sea is at first Derek Thomas at second Nick Lin your third base onire game time temperature be in the upper 70s here this afternoon lots of sunshine some hazy clouds overhead but a beautiful Labor Day Monday in Kansas City we are literally coming down the stretch after today just 24 games remain in the season and Cleveland Begins the day three games ahead of Minnesota in the Lost column four games better than the Royals again in the all important loss column first pitch of the afternoon popped up on the infield unfortunately Rick that has been a very familiar theme for Steven Quan during his struggles plate yeah you pop them up and and I think that's you're doing them a favor when you when you hit the ball in the air of your Steven Quan had to stay on it but he's had a lot of popups recently that will bring up Andre Jimenez Jimenez coming off a home stand his numbers on the last home stand Rick almost identical to his season numbers against Kansas City he's 8 for for 39 against the Royals he was 9 for 39 on the last home stand which included games against Kansas City obvious but he's been swinging the bad I mean he's been putting some good swings he's had a tendency to to pull the ball a little bit more in the last three games couple of home runs in that Pittsburgh series not that you really want to see home runs from jenz but you like to see him hit line drives and he's he's been swinging it pretty well I thought I thought the sound you heard from Chris Vala was talking a lot about him he at bats he said you know when he's hunting the right pitches we're seeing the results right now AR yeah and this is the this is a guy though Michael Waka who's got that good change up he attacks you get ahead fast ball he knows how to pitch he's looking for career win 100 uh today but he's he's a smart pitcher he's a veteran that knows how to keep you off balance jenez trying to gol one down the right field line it is a foul ball well the first time through the lineup in Cleveland he got two strikes and it seemed like he got everybody out in that change up last week AR right that's what I was going to say maybe some hitters today might sit on that change up because you're you're going to see 30% of them this probably has more to do with the fact that he's been an everyday player right this year but you forget that Andre SES is third on the team and runs batted in the big boys Ramirez Josh Naylor doing a lot of the damage that's fair that's down the corner he can run turn him loose on his way to Second Tommy fam digs it out and plays it without incident so Jimenez stops IT second with a one out double here you go squared one up there that'll be his 19th double and he got a fast ball to his liking right there and that's what you do you don't f it off you do damage with it that one was slow enough he has a tendency to swing it some pitches up out of the strike zone but he got that one past guel at first base and now Jose second in the league with 105 runs batted in he is sixth with 31 doubles and fourth in homers with 34 yeah you can sprinkle in 34 stolen bases too he's done a beautiful job not to mention he is fifth in run scored with 100 ninth in hits with 145 66 extra base hits fifth most in the league those steals you talked about that he sprinkled in he's second in the league he he can win the stolen base title you don't realize only been caught four times it's amazing he's right up there with the the guy from Tampa c c there you popped him up on the infield D young two down here comes Josh Naylor and he has been swinging it a four game hitting streak in which he has gone nine for 17 yeah this is the guy you really want to get going now starting this road trip and see if he can pick Jose up and get that run home and he's done some damage with two outs in the last few games out of play left side and he's been using the whole field line drives center field at Isbell inning over one out double does no damage Royals coming to [Applause] [Music] [Applause] B Gavin Williams will be our Chevy Network dealer starting pitcher Gavin making his 12th start a record of two and seven both those wins have come on the road so we'll see if he can get it rolling again his last start was against Kansas [Applause] City Guardians winners in three of their last four the Royals come in having dropped five in a [Applause] row they lost the last game in Cleveland and then went to Houston and got swept Royals manager Matt quatero said after that series ended the whole thing was frustrating we didn't come out of here with any wins and that's what you play for every day so it stinks popped up infield roio gives way to Jimenez one down the rest of the starting lineup for Kansas City is presented by Progressive Bobby Whit Jr will DH in bat Michael Massie hitting third salvi Perez will bat clean up MJ Melendez hitting fifth Paul D young the third baseman bat six Julie guriel in first base hitting seventh Michel Garcia is eighth and Kyle Isbell in center field batting [Music] ninth Bobby Whit Jr dhing taking low and Away Matt quatero guardian's manager will not be here today and tomorrow he'll return for the series finale he's back in Al New York attending a memorial service for his late mother Paul Hoover is cuff bench coach will serve as the acting manager for Kansas City Bobby Wht man what a season he has had leading the American League in batting average he is second in doubles second in triples fourth and runs baded in seventh in homers seventh in stolen bases and that's just the tip of the iceberg and playing a great short stop as well three and one any other year that's probably an MVP year for anybody he went five for 15 with a double and two homers against Cleveland in Houston he was two for 16 both hits home runs that got him to 30 on the year a one out walk we'll bring up Michael Massie let's check out the guardian's defense brought to you by Rally House in the Outfield will bewan Thomas and Noel and on the infield Ramirez and rokio are on the left side Jimenez and Josh Naylor on the right with B Naylor doing the [Music] [Applause] catching Michael Massie 97 mph fast ball fouled away little different in that series back in Cleveland pastina was always hitting behind wit I'm sure that's one reason why they're not going to pitch to him and maybe you walk him but you you take the chance of him stealing a base here but that's okay also a reason why Kansas City went out and found any warm body they could find at the uh the end of August picking up Robbie Gman off the waiver wire and uh also Robbie Gman and then they made a trade to pick up Julie guriel 40 years old to play first base you know they're lucky that injury came when it did right because uh you know the after September can't do it two days later right they wouldn't be able to make any moves but they were trying to get grman and fam already the guel one would definitely not have happened yanked foul but M as you talk about you know trying to take care of that three hole they're trying to figure out what to do in the leadoff spot as well yeah I see where they put fam up there who could you know do some damage yeah coming in today lead off hitters for Casey have posted the fifth worst average in major league baseball at 231 if I'm just a guessing man from the way we see it I wouldn't mind putting Garcia up there if I was them he was there earlier in the year I know he was and you know he's he's had a pretty good year against [Applause] us but they know their personnel heck of a lot better than we do well in the series in Cleveland it rotated between Garcia and Michael Massie depending on who was on the mound for Cleveland swing and a Fly ball to left Juan moving over makes the catch two down and we also know Gman takes a ton of pitches as well so I'm sure you'll see him there at some point as well and the idea from the royals point of view is to use Gman mostly against elected pitching here is salvi Perez the hometown [Applause] favorite seventh in the American League and runs batted in I should say fourth be tied with his teammate Bobby [Applause] wit they are right behind Josh naylen [Applause] I didn't know throwing a first base was so bad you got to get booze [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the first three games against Cleveland Salvador Perez was a 1man wrecking crew he was seven for 12 in the first three games last week in Cleveland and since Rick he has won for his last 18 yeah he did he was a a Onan Wrecking Crew He did damage every time he came to the plate well Matt their whole team in the month of August hit so well the question is can they do that for another month that's going to be hard to do Runner goes yeah that's a count to run on not called a strike and Bobby Whit is in there with another stolen base that's his 28th on the year yeah that's a good count to run on in that situation when you have Perez up there is a really good chance you're going to get a breaking ball and he knew it I could tell just by the way he was set up he wanted to go he picks a break ball he gets down and he will get his 28th stolen base pitch was pretty good and Perez took it but it was called a ball and so he's in scoring position with with two down and a two- two count for Perez High popped right side is it playable though is over and off the knitting yeah looked like it's started to come back a little bit it seems like I'm feeling some wind blowing in a little bit at times you know and it's coming in from right field so that may knock it down a bit he gets over there and there's uh quite a bit of territory over there to cover I think you're right without the wind yeah blowing that ball back that would have been way into the seats right we'll try again and a two and two swing and a miss he went fishing and big rig gets his first strike out no score after one in Kansas [Music] [Applause] City well come to Progressive Field to cheer on the Guardians you can scan the QR code or visit clle guardians. to purchase tickets John keny Noel leads off for the Guardians here in inning number two last 17 games Noel has three doubles seven homers 14 runs batted in WKA misses high with a curve ball two and0 and a good fast ball but it just darted a little little well patience good patience right there I'm sure he'll take one he went up high with a fast little two seamer up there he wanted to have some movement on it he did get a piece of right into the glove of [Applause] Perez yeah he was on it just F tipped it see if he gets that breaking ball down on the way change up yeah it's his first strike out one down that's a really big out for Walker to be behind in the count with a guy that can do the kind of damage we've seen Noel yeah you know that that pitch you think you're going to get that breaking ball away with Noel but that his change up so good and it has movement on it he went inside with it made it look like that same pitch that fast ball that was elevated a manzardo takes a curveball in off the plate for ball one Manz zardo hit his first major league home run yesterday and then came right back in his nexted Bat and hit another one Matt last night the one thing that manzardo said is that when he went back to Columbus they kind of worked on him dhing figuring out what to do in between at bats where to how to keep his mind right not get lost in the game and get lost in the at bat previous and he thinks he's in a better mind state to DH now and I think that's why when we heard stepen vote yesterday say he's going to DH for us most likely and that's it well yeah I mean a young kid you're not used to DH and coming to the big Le see so you really don't and it's tough enough that because you're facing all new pitchers so they would have him go back toback games in Columbus Arch dhing then let him play first but they wanted him to do it you know two three days a weak yeah but he's not going to play first here so he's going to DH he's got to get used to it but he hit a couple of fast balls yesterday and did some damage that one in off the plate that one right towards the corner of the where this one went this one went a little farther but over to the they were almost in the same spot struck him out another good change up from w and you'll see a ton of those today and you're not kidding you can see how good that change up is I mean you see it and you you think it's a fast ball but it just never gets there so two down for Lane Thomas Lane batting 364 over his last nine games well he's back in there and you know you're going to DH Man manzardo play Thomas in center field I like it give him an opportunity on the just concluded home stand three walks three runs batted in and four runs scored for Thomas over the nine games but you know he got up to such a slow start I mean after getting traded over here at the deadline and it you know it's it's tough coming to a new team in that situation he's got a month to go and they they really like him so they got to keep them in there here's the onew and that is strike three called and it [Music] was grab some friends and enjoy a cold one at Progressive Field with the district ticket presented by Miller Light you'll get a standing room only ticket with your first drink included visit CLE [Music] guardians. leading off for Kansas City here in the bottom of the second of a scoreless game it's MJ Melendez he had a terrific game one in that double header Series where he hit a home run a three-run homer and then made a diving catch to get out of an inning to save at least two runs if not [Applause] more yeah he was five for 13 to start that series with the the double and the Homer and he's really the poster child for organizational patience I guess first 79 games this year Rick he hit a buck 89 right but they stayed with him and he's hit 278 since with nine homers and 19 runs batted in but he goes fishing for one and can't get two it second St strike out for Gavin Williams and both of them Rick he's gotten hitters to go down after that curveball chasing the curveball right I love that because if you can get that fast ball that he throws that's pretty much unhitable it's about the third or fourth fastest pitch on average for any pitcher in this league and boy if he can command that pitch he can be [Applause] dangerous that's where in the last two games when we saw the veterans pitch when they went with something off speed on first pitches they usually threw it for a strike they didn't fall behind in the count it was a get me over breaking ball and man that goes a long way especially if if Gavin can do that with his fast ball he could be unhitable Game Changer right sure it is the guy at the plate may be the game changer for for him as well that home run that was hit last week in Progressive Field if you remember Carl Willis came out and talked to him after right and doesn't want to say that he was tipping things but there were something they felt like that Carl saw that he knew what pitch was coming and he said since then he's been a different pitcher he feels like he's been able to cover up whatever it is they don't want to talk about what it is of course not but they were kind of mad because he was the game that we remember he had to stop because of rain right Carl felt like the best they saw from Gavin was after that when the rain started of course and he wanted him to keep going that night here's the two2 rip foul head up that thank God there's a net down here otherwise we would have had a casualty they put me on the camera for that that two2 head it's got a homing mechanism I can't stand you guys for Arch's birthday they said come hit me right what is going on man that's the the weekend uh ugly finding back to back swing and a miss he pulled the string on him and gets his third consecutive strikeout Gavin said I got to protect my man Andre yeah he went over and he turned on a couple of heaters well you know what it's time to slow it down and he has done that three consecutive hitters Julie guel 40 years old didn't play a single game in the big leagues until Kansas City made the trade with Atlanta to acquire him he had been at Triple A Gwynette with the Braves still playing I mean what does that tell you about how much he just loves the game that's what I was thinking about he I think he led the LI in hitting at 37 yeah and he he's 40 now and he played that whole year why would he go to the minor leagues to try and get back to the pig leag and how did Atlanta not bring him up with all the injuries they've had I don't know you know like they've had injuries all season long you'd think they would find somewhere for him this is a a family the guel family starting with his dad that boy they were born to hit and he's still got a brother in Arizona 2-1 pitch fall out of play ulie born in Cuba and by the time he defected and came to America okay he didn't make his major league debut till he was 32 years old how about that but he's made a Mark he's not ready to call it a career just yet I know I told you guys last night yesterday when he was announced in Houston they gave him about a two-minute Standing Ovation he uh he had a couple of really nice years in Houston the 3-2 pitch and he's still got a good eye at the plate as well second walk issued by Gavin the inning will continue as Michel Garcia coming [Applause] up that cast 3D powered by Google Cloud you know there's this a for seamer right there and you know it does get hit and one reason why is because a lot of those pitches are coming down the middle of the plate but it's tough to Center on if he could ever command it now just there you go you don't have to go edges you just get it done down there and it's it's a tough [Applause] pitch that goes to the back stop that was a slider yeah look he hung on to it too long and it's his second wild pitch you can just see him just that ball just took off right out of his hand [Music] [Applause] [Music] right curveball backed up but it missed inside [Applause] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Fair ball Royals Take the Lead Biel could walk home Garcia in the second with a two out RBI double he just bounced it right over the bag at third base well he left that curve ball inside the other ones they were away this one stayed in and it gave him an opportunity and you know he stayed back on it enough to hit it and that's why he pulled this cuz it was on the inside part of the play but he kept his hands back so Kansas City will play from in front after the two out walk the wild pitch they get on the board yeah it's the wild pitch to put him in scoring position and here's Kyle Isbell Isbell since August 9th has batted 310 with 10 runs batted in [Music] [Applause] H true [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] he strike and the dirt nice block by B [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] well unfortunately the efficiency that Gavin is seeking is quite [Applause] elusive he gets the strike out to end the inning he has fan four but the Royals had the lead one to nothing [Music] back here in Kansas city where the Royals leaded by a score of one to nothing and we go to the third Bo Naylor will lead off for the Guardians Brian roio then Steven Quan Michael W misses high with a cutter ball one [Music] change up up high two [Music] and0 three balls no strikes he did this to Noel leading off the last inning went ball behind 3 and0 now he is behind Naylor taken all the way that's in there for a strike and a low Dart the count is [Applause] full interesting match up when you consider both these teams fighting for a division title and both managers speaking of Steven vote and Kansas City's Matt cero will be in the running for manager of the Year award in the American League here's the 3-2 down low Ball Four of course I mentioned earlier Matt quatero not with the club his a bench coach Paul Hoover is the acting manager for Kansas City there's who he grew up in Stubenville Ohio and sure he's just the acting manager today but this is a huge a thrill for for him and and a big responsibility as well he he was telling me before the game that three of the most important influences in terms of baseball his High School baseball coach at Stubenville big red Fred heatherington Max Stacy who was an assistant Tom Morrison were also American Legion you remember American Legion ball absolutely coaches for him bed back by Roo fou so he said I I know if they're watching that uh I hope he said that they're proud of the turnaround that we've made as a team and because they would appreciate the hard work AB it takes as a staff and Rick you're talking about a team that's trying to make one of the biggest turnarounds that that we've seen that basically in baseball history when you go from a 100 losses to the playoffs that's very very rare No Doubt throw to Second they get the force there un apprach the double play wow what a job by Michael Walkin you can't turn it any better no that's what you talk about if you're a pitcher and you can field your position you can help yourself out and that wasn't an easy hop it was an in between but he made sure he gave a good feed to Garcia the short stop and then let him do the work he made sure he catches it you give one good throw you get the first one before you can get the second one job well done all the way around and with two down here's Steven [Applause] Quan Quan fouled out his first time up [Music] [Applause] [Music] in the dirt two balls and two strikes Guardians down a run early base is empty two away and Michael Waka with the two- two pitch fouled right back that fast ball just above the hitting area quad trying to take that level swing get that line drive apprach you back at time it's been there at times lately but over his last 23 games just a 165 average for 20 yeah that's you would never think that that could happen not the way he swung it and I mean you're talking about a fine line you know for a line drive hitter to miss that baseball by less than a quarter of an inch that's the difference between a line drive and a popup this one's po up again we'll head to the bottom of the third one nothing Kansas [Music] [Applause] [Music] City so just to finish up a little story about Paul Hoover who is the bench coach for Kansas City and the acting manager today those were his parents Paula and Monty senior and Paul grew up in Stubenville Ohio with an older sister and a younger brother and his parents were both so Paul told me he said I learned sign language before I learned it speak but he said he said you know you know what it was like growing up you only know what you know inside your house and he so so to me and my brother and sister it wasn't different or odd or weird or anything like that we just we knew how to to sign and his parents obviously uh couldn't be more proud of what their son has accomplished oh they got to be thrilled you know and Hoover you know when he he was in the minor leagues he was teammates with both q and um Kevin cash when they were in the ray organization at Durham like you said baseball is a small fraternity it really I mean when you get into it and you look underneath all everything that's going on you can see ties from all around this [Applause] game Bobby Wht walked his first time up yeah and you're going to be careful with this guy no doubt about it you have Massie hitting behind him and that's not to downgrade Massie as a hitter that's just to say Pas mintino was in there who had like 96 RBI and uh he didn't do anything in the first couple of games in the first three games but he certainly did something in the fourth game of that series to third Ramirez long throw across on the money two down check out the injury report brought to you by the attorneys at elen well this was just it it was heartbreaking I mean for I don't care if you're a Royals fan or not but Vinnie pasquantino is a freak injury throw across the from the first baseman and as pasquantino reached back in towards the runner the runner went by just as the ball arrived and yanked his hand back ends up with a broken thumb and that was ERS who was on the mound doing the pitch and that threw the baseball and he's out he hasn't pitched since that game yeah he hasn't been placed on the injured list but he does have a bruise and so they haven't been able to use him yet and he's been one of their most reliable relievers yeah since they acquired him and for pastino I think the part that I heard an interview he did before the game today you know the frustrating thing for him is he missed the whole season with a shoulder injury just two you know right he can't get through and just play a whole season felt like he put it all together Michael Massie sends one high in the air three converge Lane Thomas takes charge and the Royals go one two three on just eight pitches in the [Music] third the next two nights Guardians live presented by your Northern GM Northern Ohio GMC dealers will come your way at 7:00 tomorrow night Tanner BBY and Brady singer Square Off in game two the city of fountains Kansas City Missouri one nothing Royals lead at fourth inning Andre Jimenez was maybe thinking about a drag bunt but the pitch was high and menz doubled in the first it's the Guardians lone hit Royals have only one hit as well but there's C with a runner in scoring position knocked home the only run [Music] run change up Adam fooled one and two and has now nine hits and 48 bats against Kansas City pitching this year [Music] Adam out on the front foot and a popup tough sunfield though everybody converging the center fielder isbel is there one away and let's check out the Medical Mutual Hometown highlight most home runs against the Royals among active players how about that look at the names just happen to be all Guardians Manana Ramirez Lindor yeah well if you're an outfielder here and you can see it it's a spacious Outfield you better always be ready to go and run especially the center fielder you got to cover some ground and the corners have the tough angles with the rounded Outfield fence down the lines I would think a day like today for the right fielder in this case Tommy fam the winds your your friend yes when that winds blowing out it's even more difficult although if it's blowing out the ball gets hit in the air it's going to fly out of here that's a can of corn you see anytime you see a ball go up here you see the in the outfielders coming in rarely do you see them going back I mean we've played in some parks now like New York or something you see a ball go up and everybody think it's going to be out of the ballpark in some of these Parks we're playing in this is legitimate Detroit's pretty jit our ballpark's not that easy to hit home runs in Arch I feel like the entire AL East any ball pit up in the sky everybody thinks it's going out of the ballpark where there's Toronto New York Baltimore Tampa Tampa you know what I mean like those Parks all play that way they sure do [Applause] we Ain going to miss it's 0 and two another good change [Applause] up Bo you notice he really breaks that change up out to the big hitters shows the fast ball and makes sure he misses with it like he did right there and then when you go into that zone to attack it's going to be something off speed waca with the onew and Naylor pops it in the air jammed right at Melendez they go quietly in the fourth it remains one- nothing Kansas [Music] [Applause] [Music] City thank you thank Major League Baseball along with the Cleveland Guardians and fans joining in the fight against Childhood Cancer and we celebrate survivors and recognize all of those undergoing treatment for cancer and to learn more go to MLB together.com [Music] bottom of the fourth inning and the Kansas City Royals with a one- nothing lead [Music] Salvador Perez leading off for Kansas City he is now 13 for 39 against the Guardians with four homers and 11 runs B batted in but half of those hits came in the three games to open last week's Series in Cleveland when he went 7 for 12 yeah and uh being the captain of this club like he has been for the last few years co- figure you know when they needed it they were coming in and had to do some damage if they wanted to get back into the division race and they certainly did and he got it [Applause] started you know you figure he's what 34 years old he's going to play some go he's going to play some more first base too now as well yes I would think so but being 34 hitting 25 home runs right now in the season he's got another month to go not too many catchers in baseball have done what he's doing at his age Jose can take his time make a good throw one away you know the question I have is you know in the month of August when the Royals made their move they went 15 and 13 but they were first in batting average they led the league in runs per game at 5.3 and they were second in home runs arch in the month of August yeah they took off off they got on to a a serious run offensively they were averaging well over five runs a game right so can they do that for another month is a question no you don't you don't stay on for two months you look at their series numbers against Houston they're not a single hitter they got fat no down at minute made Park so the question is was that simply the market correcting itself or was that um you know the Royals going into a slump or was that the Astros just pitching really well Astros pitching very well because they're six games up in that division now well the other thing is is their starters they didn't score runs until after the sixth or seventh inning in all four games so the starters dominated them yeah they did and we know and we're going to end up finishing the year with Houston uh we know that team that they can pitch they always have been able to so uh yeah it's going to be interesting we got to we got to face those guys towards the end of the year the Astros and Royals demonstrate how different a team can be based on when you see them right because when Houston came to Kansas City earlier in the year it was no contest the Royals dominated them but Houston's a different team though yes it is oh they got off to people had had them written off like they could never make the playoffs I don't know who that would be well yeah just go watch any of those Sports talk shows or anything like that you don't watch those I don't heck we thought it a little bit when we were down there because I didn't seem like the same team that we were used to we did they had how many did they have have hurt they all were when we saw and remember when Dusty was the manager what did he tell you last year because of that WBC yes the World Baseball Classic and he also mentioned being in the playoffs and getting deep in the playoffs year after year it wears your guys down yeah and you know what they they uh really did they didn't look like the same team behind the bag Naylor will take it himself two down when Houston came to Kansas City back in April the Royals swept the Astros and outscored them 28 to8 wow wow so they had a little [Applause] payback 4 months later the Astros are a completely different team no question well and KC may have to see him come playoff time again so there may be a third matchup well we always say good pitching will stop good hitting you know you make them your pitches and you get into it and that's what happens when you get to the playoffs two balls no strikes Paul the young struck out his first time up big rig has retired six Royals in a row well this has been a nice addition for Kansas City picking up the young seven straight set down by Gavin Williams one- nothing Royals as we head to the [Music] fifth all right stadi is time for Community americ Guardians report presented by the calva brother floor show comes your way after the game Tuesday with Al palowski and Jensen Lewis fifth inning John Kenzie Noel leads off for the guardian struck out his only time up Michael W has allowed just one hit through four Innings has walked one and struck out the side in the second John Kenzie looks at a pitch outside two and0 look familiar last that b yeah I started out three and0 and then that ended up being his first strike out and he ended up striking out the the side in that inning after a 3-oh count now let me go back in with something I can throw at any time for a strike that's the change up going to take the time to send out a happy birthday wish to Regina Duca my good friend Pat Deluga from Niagara Falls his mom is turning 100 today very special happy birthday say to you ate a lot of meatballs and moton over there on Sundays little did she know line drive at a base hit left field that was a really nice piece of hitting on a curveball just waited back yes didn't try to do too much kept his hands back nicely served it in the left just a second hit little did Regina Duca in Niagara Falls know that on the day of her 30th birthday she would have to share her special day with you right for the next 18 years of her life in Niagara Falls New York that is true that sounds like a [Laughter] curse Kyle mad zardo takes a first pitch curveball for a strike now he's going to that curveball the second time through to some of these guys [Music] Arch did you think in September 2nd that we would have our fifth and sixth hitters would be rookies uh you know you know it's kind of odd to see this team back to back yeah it it sure is now it you never know during the course of a baseball season Andre you know that no doubt that's tag pretty well right field down the chalk and it hooked foul yeah he got out in front a little bit how do you wait back enough to to where as you say he just get jammed with the fast ball and so you that you don't get out front on the Chain you see what good pitchers you can't do that because you as a hitter you're programmed to live on the fast ball and that's where your timing starts from but when you get a guy with a good change up uh you know you just it's so tough to wait back the only way you could do it it used to be you move up in the box and and you know what you still sit on the fast but maybe you can stay back a little bit more on that change up he got a fast ball there and he hit it well but that's what you have to hit is his fast ball but he may not throw it to you for you know good strikes he'll just show up where he wants you to see it up or on the edges and then when he throws it up in the end then you it jams you then he comes back with something off speed that change up and he has him he has you eaten right out of his hand and then when you're sitting on that change up he throws the fast ball and then he cuts one in on you good pitchers that have a change up that's what that's why this team has a a tough time hitting change ups for anybody it's it's not an easy pitch to hit I think uh if you can get a fast ball change up guy and then an occasional breaking ball you you're going to be just fine that's swatted deep left center field Melendez chasing back he will wave goodbye Lane Thomas how do you do that was impressive there's your fast ball and it was middle of the plate first home run in a Cleveland uniform is a game changer here in the fifth it puts the Guardians in front two to one could not have come at a better time my goodness [Applause] that's what you got to hit we're going to get another look at that eventually but boy oh boy was that the right time you get a base hit that Noel got a did a nice job on the curve ball they gave him the silent treatment and what I said about MJ Melendez earlier it resonates with Lane Thomas that's where your patience pays off with a player he hasn't done what they thought maybe he would do initially but they you can't give up on a guy let's go back two games ago when we thought he had a home run in Cleveland it was caught at the wall been a different hitter since and it was a double play and since that hit he was back in there the next day against a right-hander and you showed the signs that you wanted to keep him in a ball game Baylor he's got a base hit so three hits in the fifth after the Guardians had one hit in the first four Innings of the game wow that is going to be our big Nissan are you kidding me I mean that was beautiful he left it middle so he paid for it didn't locate it and and all those guys were cheering there but when he got the nobody word they sat on their hands oh man I've been here this long you guys going to do that to me they gave makes him feel better yes sure they did now he should be smiling if you want love to go stand next to that guy he'll talk and make you feel better one out runner at first Brian rokio bounced into a double play his first time up [Applause] Salvo nor Perez gives way to Waka his throw pulled him off the base at first and everybody's safe well he forced him to make a good throw and Waka uh you know picked the ball up he had him if he made a good throw but there you go roio he bunts another one and gets another base hit you know what happens he bunned it and he he put kind of the bun in no man's land right Perez wanted to take charge by the time he peeled out of the way he was in the way of Waka yes he couldn't make the good throw you see cuz Perez got in his way and he pulled off the first baseman so I'll tell you what that kid's got to learn how to bunt more you said he should do it once a game yeah well you know you look at at the bottom of the lineup the patient at bat by John Kinsey got this started Thomas with the Home Run arch for this offense to do what it needs to do they have to get more from the bottom yeah no question no question but you know it's little things that make this team go it's not where you're going to get you know like like they're doing right now you play little baseball you get base runners you get a key hit and that's what they live off of you don't wait for somebody to hit a home run because you don't expect it when they do it seems to you just pick them [Applause] up you've got four hits in the inning you had one coming into this inning Steven Quan takes a fast ball outside he's over for two has fouled out twice popped up once to the right side once to the left side now Walker going through for the third time he's going to have to minimize the damage here chopped it foul the Royals have three left ters in the bullpen and one of that threesome is now getting loose might be Sam long but I can't see that far Arch I think you're right it's a left go with it if you can't see that it's a lefty I know that if he if you can't see it he can't see it not all I can tell you it's a lefty either it's either Daniel Lynch I fourth Chris bich or Sam long the first two you said are long are taller so that's long I'm pretty sure number 50 that'd be boobage of course don't worry folks we'll get it there's a bunt beautiful bunt and it ends up going foul it caught the edge of the grass and that just pushed it foul halfway down the line it looked like it was going to be perfect but it just caught the lip of the grass and it pushed it into the foul ground yeah the right idea it caught the edge of the grass is what pushed it yes no doubt we had one like that back in Cleveland a couple days ago where the ball came back on Ramirez remember he was going to let it roll foul it was in and then it came back into Fair [Music] territory just away and low two and two back out of play really making walk of work in this inning yeah I mean he was on cruise control he had about uh 60 pitches I think right around in this inning and so he's got to have over [Applause] 20 yeah pitch 24 will be coming Walkers hanging by thread here in the fifth the two- two is up high in a Full [Applause] Count see this is the at bat you need against them just make them work foul off pitches don't try and do much just try and find a little hole between the infielders here's the payoff pitch and another [Applause] popup two down and a word now from Levin Furniture for the best selection of temper Pedic sternson Foster and purple your headquarters for luxury mattresses Lain Furniture in mattress Andre humz batting 314 this year with runners in scoring position he has 33 hits total with a runner and scoring position only Jose Ramirez and Josh Naylor have more each with 41 first bace behind the back nice play by guo and the 40-year-old beats him to the bag to retire the side the Guardians take the lead on a two- run home run his first as a guardian by Lane [Music] Thomas 2-1 Guardians on top bottom of the fifth inning youie duel leading off for Kansas City he walked moved to second on a wild pitch and scored the only run for Kansas City in the second right back up the middle diving Stu by rokio gets up throws got him a dynamite play by roio and that time Rick he showed the patience never plan panicked right and I mean watch yes you get up you have to get up quickly but he picked the right guy 40-year old guy going down the first Baseline but he just wanted to make sure he gets a good throw and you had to by plenty I wasn't sure he was going to make it to first place he he just stopped read not even in the picture look well right that's that was the right guy 40 or 60 wait a minute you know what that's what your mind's got to do when you get down in your a short stop you just get up and make the throw doesn't matter who's running you just got to you know make sure you do everything right now Russia rugi Ador and Kai kareah were working on that play with roio before the game they're working on they're working on no working on transfers and going up the middle to his left working on the transfer not having it do what it's done all year [Music] long Mikel Garcia with weak contact to Second that's what you like I'll Tell You Gavin there to settle down in the last three Innings now getting some easy outs and ground balls nine in a row retired by the rander a word now from [Music] FanDuel new FanDuel customers can get $200 in bonus bets guaranteed when you place your first $5 bet just download the FanDuel Sportsbook app today now Kyle Isbell struck out his only time up in the fourth you know Arch I I mentioned it that in that fourth inning in fact I think it was right before the pitch he threw to isbel to strike him out that the efficiency that Gavin has been seeking hasn't been there that was in the first two innings pitch count was piling up he was right around 50 pitches in that second inning right and ever since then it's been Bing Bang Boom efficiency and ground balls and they've been swinging at it early and you know it has since then 8 11 that's what you need I mean and this big man can do it you I mean you let him put it in play I mean he had uh three straight strikeouts there the one ending the first inning and the first two in the second then he had to work hard and wild pitch but it seemed like he settled in after [Applause] that he is rolling down the highway right now onew offering the big rig is flying got the hammer down 10 four good buddy we're not going to pay any tolls Arch no the two- two out of [Applause] [Music] play get CW McCall on the line got us a convoy there's people right now the two two swing and a miss oh he struck him out made him look bad yes he did dealers and by Union Home Mortgage Promises [Music] Kept downtown Kansas City Missouri and just off I70 is Kaufman Stadium [Applause] [Music] [Music] off the plate oh that's a hit and you can see walk able to reach it yeah yeah if he uh even if he caught it he wasn't going to get Jose when you hit it that high bounced off home plate that's Home Free that's a infield single right there couldn't have been placed any better Chris bich is the new pitcher for Kansas City after Michael W went five innings allowing two runs on five hits walk one struck out three buit pitched an inning and a third against us back in Cleveland on the 26th of August they got four hits and got to run in he had a strike break out as [Music] well there's a ball rocked deep right center field ISB Bel chasing it is go oh and a home run for Josh Naylor the guardian second two-run Homer of the afternoon and that makes it 4 to one Cleveland well that ball was smoked that's home run number 29 for Josh and gives him 100 runs batted in on the season yeah he continues to swing it that ball I mean it's a tough poke to right center field but that thing got out of here in a hurry off the Leander good sign for [Applause] number [Applause] 29 naor and Ramirez both have reached the 100 RBI mark this year for the Guardians what a tandem they have [Music] been now Naylor as hit in five straight games going 10 for 20 with eight ribbies you know Arch there's the calendar that we all live by it's how you keep the time so to speak and the calender says the first day of fall is still just about 3 weeks away right but unofficially we've heard for years that Labor Day marks what the official end of summer right that's correct you go back to school that's the end of summer football season starts that's the end of summer so all the all these other things in life tell us that well when's the first day of fall but when the Shadows start to get long in baseball when you're in these stadiums and the Shadows start to creep onto the field the air gets a little cooler the baseball means more each day that's that's when you know it's fall right that's that's really for all of us that love this game we don't need the calendar to tell us you can feel Autumn approaching yeah feel it and see it that sun not as high in the sky the two two that is hit high in the air right center look at how far he's got to come to make a catch his Bells there one away T-Mobile coverage cam here's Josh n Bo got a fast ball middle it was elevated a little bit and Josh when you're swinging smooth he's got both hands on the back the helmet doesn't fly off he hits the ball like that that's a level swing that's a line that's what I'm saying he can get on that high fast ball a lot of times he gets caught where you know that helmet flies off he's pulling off he's he's lifting separating but when he has a smooth swing like he's had these last three or four games he's a treat to watch [Music] red bird just let me know it's been six years since the Guardians had two players get to the 100 rbr Mark in the same season Jose Ramirez is the common thread no doubt Edwin and Carion Carion he joined back 18 manzardo flips one the left but Melendez will make the catch two down and now Lane Thomas coming up Lane he got into one and look Michael W was just cruising along like the veteran pitcher we have seen him be for Kansas City all year long and with one out he made one mistake and Lane Thomas just jumped it and I'll tell you what he didn't make a mistake on the base hit to Noel he hit a good pitch exactly that was only the second hit of the game and right as we say it's only a mistake if the hitter hits it Well Lane Thomas hit it he hit it out and so did Josh Naylor here in the sixth two two run homers for Cleveland they lead 4 to one [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Applause] all right thanks Al one count here for Tommy fam and he takes a strike to even it up fam is 0 for two this 11-year veteran flamed off the waiver wire by Kansas City began his career with the Cardinals he's played with Tampa San Diego Cincinnati Boston the Mets shall I go on Arizona the White Sox back to St Louis wow and now here with Kansas City it's funny how teams want a a wanted guy you know for sit sit situations and it's been Tommy fam that's going to be hand grab quick throw got him oh man if he couldn't throw a 100 I don't know if he'd got him out but Josh Naylor Heep I was going to say did he step on his foot he might have looks like it because that throw he he had to throw a seed to get him and he's on the bag and on the toe he sure did and Tommy fam he gave a point back to Josh as if to say hey my bad sorry I didn't mean to do that but he did he stepped right on his toe Josh was on the inside of the bag but Ricky had I couldn't tell on that first look but it looked like he had his foot not just on the edge but no you know what look a little bit but it wasn't bad if he was running down the line on the on the other side he could had plenty of room I think to get on there but some right-handers when they start running out they're on the inside part of that line and that that angle is cut down and I looks like that's where he was you see what I'm saying he was towards the infield side of that base as opposed down the foul foul side and that's how he he clipped him he he it was just a bad angle but they get the [Applause] out and as I said Archie if Gavin doesn't have a strong arm fast ball he probably beats it out it took that 97 mph I didn't think he was going to get him to be honest with you but he he got up and planted and made a good throw 11 in a row retired by Gavin and now Bobby Whit [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] this one is popped up foul ground B racing over and makes the grab two down well that's a nice out to get right there oh he was going to catch that if it stayed in in play and it did he finally caught it picked it up and look at him he was on the run it gets over there in time you know I maybe you heard this phrase when you were young I remember you know playing sports as a youngster and someone once said boy so and so looks like they're feeling their oats it's like what what does that even mean I had no idea but you'd hear it over and go you know oh he's feeling his oats gav Williams whatever that means he's feeling his oats right now what you don't know but you're going to say it I don't know what it means but that means he's feeling good I've never felt oats before no but you've eaten them so I don't even like oatmeal that's your problem you got to eat them got to eat I was going to ask you was the last time you felt your o but you already told us you never had we got to get you off the grass and into the o yeah this I'd rather have Cocoa Puffs I feeling about Coco Puffs well that's a big r filling his Cocoa Puffs there there you go okay that I like there you go well then that's you just started it he's feeling his Cocoa Puffs only on a guardian's broadcast people here's the [Music] 01 one- one pitch Michael Bassie takes and a beautiful curve [Applause] ball what I'm saying BBE we topper foul first in batting average what the Alvarez has jumped up he's been some kind of hot [Applause] [Music] there's a line drive left center field and a running catch by isbill the Guardians go one two three stretch time in Kansas City 4-1 [Music] [Applause] Cleveland but Gavin Williams back out here with the bottom of the seventh inning [Music] [Applause] yeah this is only the third time that Gavin has gone six Innings he's trying to get an out here in the seven well AR think about what's happening right now this is three days in a row that the Guardians have got six Innings out of their starters yes can of corn to left and I was talking to Carl Willis about this a couple days ago and he he said you know what he goes I feel like our rotation is getting in the right place if we can get Cobb there he goes if we can just get six from these guys and you see what Gavin's done today he goes the bullpen and being the place we need for this trip yeah that's going to be a good sign and that's always nice six you can see he's retired his last 14 batters and I mean he's had a nice curveball that he's kept down in the zone today uh you know he has a wild pitch and gave up a a hit to give up a run but a two out run but he's been very good today and think about take it off this boy gave up one earn running six Cobb gave up none and you only given up one so far and six and a third from Gavin and really Matt you said it when that eight pitch third inning it seems like the game changed for Gavin Williams for sure and and this to me is how good he's been you can count on one hand the number of times you have seen a reliever such as Kade Smith up and just standing around Wai he was up last inning ready to come in the game and Gavin said no you're not ready I'm not ready to get out of here yet and he's up again he's just out there killing time he's on a roll maning coo he's feeling him he's uh uh I've been told Andre he's feeling emboldened full of energy maybe a confidence hey how did you guys do this job before social media we bring up anything and I get it sent to me well as long as they send it to you it's fine know that's fine I'm sitting all year room for your birthday tonight are available Gavin over the strikeout right Jose got a hit and uh yeah we're under the total yeah it's a win th far with two to play Carlos Hernandez the new pitcher for the Royals Andre simz sends a high fly ball to right field Tommy fam back pedaling one down Gavin Williams 98 pitches seven Innings of just brilliant work here today Jose Ramirez [Music] [Applause] [Music] Jose over a 100 runs batted in coming into today and now over 100 runs scored on the year [Music] drilled deep right is it fair down the line and it hooked foul just in front of the pole it had plenty of [Applause] [Music] distance they what that's a nice pitch by Carlos Hernandez Strikes Out Jose for out number [Applause] two well that was down to the basement he threw a low Dart and that thing kept going down and got Jose to swing at it and I think Jose really upset with himself there more than anything [Music] Josh Naylor his seventh career home run against the Royals back in the sixth inning sends one the opposite way deep it's over the head of Mendez up against the wall and Josh going into second base with a double man oh man as he stand nice and locked see how easy That Swing looked and he drives it over the head to the left fielder with a nice smooth swing and I mean that ball smoke cuz it short hops so w and that was up 97 out of the strike zone but he put just a nice level swing didn't try to do too much with it hits a vicious line drive so second extra base hit of the game his 23rd double he now has 29 homers and he's locked in right now John Kenzie Noel out in front look at this level yeah and the follow through look at not trying to lift not doing anything he stayed very balanced you know if you had a telestrator you could draw a line through his swing and and it's the balance that you talked about where he's impacting the ball as opposed to it's just fractions but when he gets out in front of it all of a sudden that that bad angle changes and he gets the pop the helmet flies off and he flies open but right now his timing he is right on he's on everything because he's hitting everything off the fast ball Josh is 11 for 21 with eight runs batted in in his five-game hitting streak [Applause] [Music] [Applause] they're not holding Naylor he takes off and it's an uncontested stolen base that's his sixth on the [Applause] year 3-2 count for big Christmas who's one for three with a run scored on a base hit back in the fifth straight drill deep right field back is fam but it'll die well shy of the track and that will end the inning middle of the E 4-1 [Music] [Applause] [Music] [Applause] Cleveland this copyrighted telecast is presented by authority of the Cleveland Guardians and may not be reproduced or retransmitted in any form and the accounts and descriptions of this game may not be disseminated without the express written consent of the Cleveland [Applause] Guardians for one Cleveland leads [Applause] it Cleveland Clinic call to the bullpen here in the eighth inning for Cade Smith Kade on for the 65th time this year six and one and there's a base H man oh man he might not make it the second base oh yeah he will he knows what he's going to do he's saving it he's saving it's like he hit a home run he knew does he think it's Fantasy Camp I'll tell you what boy he can still hit right he's always been able to hit right-handers and they may get a pinch runner for him is what they may do and you can see and oh that's a little breaking ball there or a splitter and look at he's cruising there's the split they're sending a trainer out to check on him after the bat boy went and gave him his sliding gloves I think he fooled the manager today and said you know that he knew he could get to second base cuz it got to the wall I don't think he's hurt certainly didn't look like it to me he he ran down on the ball at uh roio Dove for and threw him out at first base unless they know something was going on before the game well again he he had been in the minor leagues with triple A Atlanta but he has not played in the big leagues until Kansas City made the deal for him look it doesn't look like he's limping or anything he knows where the ball is so he sees it getting in he picks it up just a titch he get himself in his second base in scoring position but he's coming out of the game and maybe that's just manager's discretion there well Freddy fine will enter he'll be the runner and we'll wait to see if well for me he'll probably go behind the plate and they'll put Perez at first man no maybe if there maybe if there's something wrong with the guriel maybe he's been dealing with something yeah who knows but believe me he was as you saw he was never in a hurry to get to second base so either he was protecting himself knowing that there's something wasn't feeling right or not we don't know but Michael Garcia slaps one foul the other way well that's only their second hit both of them have been doubles that's the kind of job that Gavin Williams did today seven Innings that is the seventh time that a Cleveland starter has gone seven Innings this year Bobby was the last to do it and Tanner did it three times on the year what do we have Carrasco did it uh Tristan and one other here's the 02 he missed the little l a tough play it's in the alley and a t driving catch by John Kenzie Noel tagging and moving to third is for me John Kenzie that was an allout diving stop and he gets up a little slow but he seems to be AOK okay and I'll tell you I thought that ball was going to drop he gets there at the last minute I knew Thomas wasn't going to get there but he timed it just right to where he was able to make the play and they get it out who cares about that Runner tagging but a nice play to get the first out of the inning [Applause] deep enough to get the run home Thomas backpedaling he'll make the catch two down Kyle Isbell picks up RBI number 39 on the sack fly and it's now a 4-2 Guardians lead the 46th sacrifice fly by Kansas City on the year a pretty good job that's just the 16th run and almost 66 Innings of work for Cade Smith back to the top of the order Tommy fam 0 for three round ball is short and a nice play by roio fielded that hop perfectly and the inning is over we'll head to the ninth in Kansas City 42 [Music] Guardians the Home Depot's getting it done Kansas City is one of the best teams you told me this before the game before the game you said Kansas is one of the best team with r them scoring position so what do you do don't let him get any runners in scoring position exactly right and that's exactly what Williams did they were hitting 312 this year at home with runners in scoring position which is by far the best in baseball but the big rig you know after that second inning he settled in and I mean he locked it down Kansas City hitters have to feel like wait we just left Houston didn't We because that's what the Astros did they shut their offense down and after the first three games last week in Cleveland I wasn't sure that was possible because the Royals hit everything Cleveland threw at him in those first three games since then they've uh they've looked rather human well it happens if you're not scoring five runs a game it makes a little bit tougher and when they do it they were doing it early at least they did in Cleveland they had the lead and they they kept going David fry batting for Kyle manardo sends a high flyball to center field Kyle Isbell has got his work in today one down stay tuned for Guardians live post game presented by Toyota Allen Jensen already and standing by with highlights analysis they'll be interviews and much more this has been a an entertaining game I'm sure Jensen will love to talk the pitching side of this one because Kevin Williams was fun to watch the way he attacked hitters and on the other side Waka was great through four one mistake cost him a two-run homer and then Chris bich the left-hander who came in gave up the home run to the left-handed hitter yeah and he made a bad pitch to this guy wela did a fast ball middle of the plate and Thomas hit his first home run as a guardian and that got him on the board and that lifted that or Thomas you'll see in that fifth inning watch this right down the middle and he took advantage of it left center field got it into the seats that's a two-run shot that got him on the board that got the Dugout into it and then one more from Naylor they were able to add a sacrifice fly last inning did this go behind uh Lane I it did I thought it went between his feet but actually you know that's a tough ball when you're a hitter because normally you want to jump back and you jump right into it and he didn't do that that's hard to [Applause] do there's another Bas hit go is starting to find his stroke oh yes sir he go too easy and he'll stop there Isbell went into a slide to try to stop that ball from Rolling he couldn't quite stop it didn't matter Lane was going to settle yeah this one he locks in that ball out over the plate pulls it in the Gap but anytime this ball is not at directly at one of these outfielders in this park you got to think too and force them to stop you from getting there but he he got it easily his 21st double of the year [Applause] [Music] Baylor so they're telling us that Julie guel left the game with left hamstring tightness well that's oh right right one of those hamstrings well you know that's not good if they just got him because they wanted him to to play first base and now you know he may have to already sit well Rick I don't know when it's starting to tighten up on him because when he got his uh when he was on base in the second inning he wasn't exactly moving right all that quickly [Music] right [Applause] [Music] tell you what you have to feel good for uh for Lane Thomas to get some hits to fall to have some positive energy finally come your way because it has been a Monumental struggle since he arrived in Cleveland hey yes you got to be thrilled he breaks for third a swing and a miss throw it out not in time 302 steal of the year for Lane but unfortunately there are two down as Baylor strikes out I mean we remember we're sitting in the lobby in Detroit waiting to go to the ballpark and Lane Thomas showed up with his he had his suitcases his duffel bags and he's pushing he lookman he looked like the Bellman he's coming around you know we introduced ourselves and spoke to him briefly but you know that wasn't his first rodeo I mean he's been traded a couple of times in his career started with Toronto traded to St Louis St Louis to Washington Washington Cleveland but for whatever reason it's just taking him a while to get get it rolling but man he he's starting to look like the player they traded for a guy who can impact the game on both sides of the ball we've seen the defense that's been on display he can go get him yeah he's your center fielder you need well we saw the power today with his first home run as a guardian now over the last 10 games he's hit well over 370 Ryan roio one for three today other insurance run certainly wouldn't hurt with glass up in the bullpen he's ready to come in two and two [Applause] gra ball up the middle cut off by Garcia his throw in Time bottom of the ninth coming up Guardians lead by two bring on classy [Applause] Lan Thomas swinging a hot bat of late he came into today with a 364 average over his last nine games this included in that he came so close to changing that game in Pittsburgh fell inches shy and since then it's like he's hit everything in sight first home run as a guardian today that got him on the board gave him the lead Josh Naylor's two-run homer an inning later made it 4 to one Kansas City got one run back in the eighth and now col trying to slam it shut in the bottom of the ninth one ball one strike for Bobby Whit Jr 0 for two with a [Applause] walk weak ground ball to second one away Los taking over the franchise alltime record in saves surp passing the mark of Cody Allen you know what happened and obviously when it happens it's the end of the game you go off the air quickly we never really got a chance to talk about Cody Allen and celebrate his accomplishments and what he meant to the franchise in in his time as a closer standup guy and one of the best about a month or so ago and we had him on when he was in Cleveland for some time he said hey it's just a matter of time I knew this guy was going to break it yeah sadly he knew and I mean he was thrilled about it he talked well I mean Cody was he was something very special when he was here without a doubt he'll never be [Applause] [Music] forgotten one-1 pitch I think Rick especially at the big league level Talent recognizes talent and as great as Cody Allen was he took one look at CLA said oh yeah this is a different animal it's a guy that can just you respect the best man and what we loved about Cody and what his teammates loved about him is what class does for his manager and his teammates he's accountable he's available he shows up every day he wants the ball [Applause] bingo in the dirt a first pitch slider to Salvador Perez who is 0 for three [Applause] [Music] that fast ball at 101 hits the [Applause] mark and that's off to the right out of play Royals down to their last strike [Applause] 3,612 turn out on a beautiful Labor Day at caufman stadium in Kansas City in the air left Center that's hit a ton Lane Thomas is there book it Guardians come to Kansas City and take the series opener from the Royals by a
