MLB Network | Mark Derosa reacts Aaron Nola sharps, Nick Castellanos HR as Phillies def. Astros 5-0

that would break a previous single season record set by the twins in O Robert your Astros you're at the bank Phil's back at home Trey Turner doing his thing forcing fast outside go get it Austin hay scores and the Phillies lead it one to nothing Verlander could have got a strike out earlier in the at bat call didn't go his way Nick castiano said he kicked himself after he took the first pitch fast ball thinking it might be the only one he saw on the at bat he knew he would see off speed three-run shot Philly's lead it four to nothing five innings for Verlander four runs Aaron Nola on the mount with a Philly yes please is really good and D you asked JT real Muto during their slide what's going on he said just baseball things are looking up for the Phils straight cruising gave up a single to Jose altu first pitch then retire the next eight Reed Robert this is I mean you know this the one thing I noticed too and we're not going to do it in this deep dive over here Bryce Harper is getting going nine for his last 24 he's about to get scorching with the homers Nick castios and the Phillies breaking out of their mini slump the mentality is is that whether we're going through a hard time or you know things are going great uh just to remain as consistent as possible and for me and you know my message to everybody else don't fall short with your preparation and and and take every game as as the only game that you have today which is the truth you know just win today uh he's so calm and collected and the bigger the moment the more he settles in and um you know all the faith in the world Arin NOA against the Astros does it again take a look seven scoreless stuck out six walked one left to a standing ovation as he should bunch of curveballs and it worked and the Phillies rolled over the Astros on Tuesday start to feel as a little chill in the air when we first wake up then it gets gorgeous then it gets a little chill Dro e and flows to the baseball season even the Phillies as good as they are go through them and we were seeing it yeah I I mean from both sides I mean what a great matchup a replay of the 2022 World Series no on the mound Verlander on the mound Verlander's interesting to me from the Houston side kind of watching him grind out the five innings yesterday sitting 91 92 yeah but still effective Robert got a good feel for his breaking ball it just seems like he's competing and grinding to see what he has down the I I think eventually he'll he'll settle in but what he's going to look like this time next month or in October if they're fortunate enough to win the division no one really knows what you think about the Jason Hayward pickup yeah I was just going to ask you that I I I think that's more when I read it I I saw the reactions uh on on social media in that you know they're worried oh what what's going on with Kyle Tucker I think that's more of a Chaz McCormick issue I I agree with you than Kyle Tucker I think it's a no-brainer yeah you're not paying him anything you're bringing in one of the best men in baseball right been to the postseason done that great defensive replacement short porches on both sides with the Crawford box and pull side maybe he runs into something give Tucker a little time off his feet again I I agree I I think it's a win-win see what happens with it yeah but I was dialed in on this game from from uh cover to cover all right five nothing Phillies I want to love on arinola because before we get into the tape we're seeing it in our game it the the middleman is getting phased out of the game right you're either a superstar or you're making minimum and guys are having trouble in free agency recently getting these big time deals well you know who got a big time deal and he actually left money on the table cuz he was actually offered more money by the Atlanta Braves was this Beast taking am M yesterday 7 for 172 and why why do you continue to Pony up for a guy like this number one you don't even know the score when you on the game when he's pitching he could be getting his brains beat in or throwing a perfect game he is static walking off the mound and number two he makes every start so I want to love on him and he was dominant again in a variety of ways last night he had the high heater working he had a devastating breaking ball working that he used north of 40% of the time he's got deception in his motion He's Got Confidence he's pitched against this team he talked about the fact that it's comes down to execution they know what I got and I know what they got so pause this real quick and bring me up the dependability board cuz that's crazy to me since the start of 2018 look at it you want to get paid you got to be really good but you got to walk in the door every day and your teammates know exactly oh there's arinola punching six and 2/3 maybe seven Innings he's going to give us a chance to win starts 202 starts since the start of 2018 that's first in the game he's third in wins Innings he's first strikeouts he's second war he's fourth 7 for 172 that's money well spent we sat on this couch last year and talked about he be the guy you'd go get because you know exactly what you're getting all right I want to take you through his start he did it with a curveball and a high heater and he let you know from jump that his breaking ball was on he had the paralyzing two seamer working he could elevate a four seamer to his old roommate Alex bregman and he'll throw the two seamer in he had it all covered I want to show you this first inning pause this bring up the curveball board for me most runs saved on non-fast ball pitch this season Chris S at the top of the line with his slider at 20 but then you bring it down the curve ball from arinola 14 runs saved okay first inning he's feeling feeling you out you're feeling him out as a guy sitting on the bench watching you want to know does he have his breaking stuff yet what is he feeling on is this heater got life on it Alex bregman comes to the plate after altu hits a Ambush heater for a base hit knock to right I want to take you through this at bat he's going to let you know his curve balls on from the top of the first okay cut her away right there one-1 count dirty breaking ball run that back for me real quick look at the depth bite on this pitch it gets to JT M's mask and then disappears down to the left run this for a first inning breaking ball to have that type of spin on it you know he's feeling pretty good about himself and now he's got him thinking right is he going heater in what's he going to do right here out in front now he's got him jumpy to the baseball and he can blow a four seam heater by you so he was able to attack you that way and yire Diaz all night last night he struck him out in the first inning with a nasty breaking ball it appeared he was waiting for that pitch to come back again all night and he stayed elevated heater once he got two strikes on him and was able to blow his doors off stay up there again don't tunnel the breaking ball off it boom gone show me the next Nola board take a look at this fast ball notes this season Aaron Nola so he's got this reception he's got extension look at his extension tied for 13th among starting pitchers minimum 750 thrown so the velocity is not through the roof but the perceived velocity is a mile and a half more so he's getting out here he's giving you that low three quarter he's got good extension he's got upshoot on the for seamer I mean I grew up watching baseball in the 80s when I watch arinola Pitch I think Dave Steve Toronto Blue Jays get back into it I think David con ability to manipulate ability to get down low 3/4 spin it elevate that heater Dave Steve and Toronto was absolutely nasty by the way he doesn't get talked about enough so when I watch arinola he can play on my team anytime he is a one or two in any rotation Dependable knows how to execute pretty awesome now Lauren what' you say Nick should be the lead singer of a rock band he should be I'll tell you what he's hit him in bunches really he's carried this offense you're starting to hear about it last 61 games he's hitting 304 with nine so why the Bryce Harpers and other guys in this lineup have kind of Peak valed at times he stayed constant after a bad start so I want to get into his at bats he had a big three-run bomb last night and I want to throw to some sound because he is nailing life in his post game all right first a Justin Verlander breaking ball o bottom of the second then he throws it he's all over that he throws it again one1 now he goes non-competitive heater away pause this I'm sitting on the couch I'm like okay JV knows he's got him leaning out over two breaking balls for SE for seamer away if he just tunnels the slider off this he's going to get a swing and a roll over the short stop run it it's exactly what happens so I'm saying to myself all right Nick is definitely on the off heat stuff he doesn't think Justin can beat him with his heater go to postgame sound I'm watching this he shows up hat pushed down eye black on no shirt take a listen um usually with how hoppy his fastball is my Approach was just to make sure that I'm on time for his heater uh this was the first time that uh you know heater was probably secondary to his offs speed stuff pause okay what's he right there he's basically saying I'm going to sit soft all night usually in the past Justin verander heater has life through the Zone Nick didn't feel like it did after his first at bat I'm going to get a breaking ball at some point in this next at bat and I'm going to be all over it that's the cat and mouse run this and this is where the game ends right heater away he doesn't even Flinch on it doesn't care 01 I know I'm getting a breaking ball at some point and there it is and he doesn't miss it the good hitters don't miss it if they're looking for it and get it they do not miss it and Nick castios has been really good that's the problem with this Phillies lineup okay it doesn't matter Alec bul is sitting in the four slot last night doesn't have a knock but the team just the lineup so deep that a guy like Nick castios who gets a little protection from Bryson St in the lineup is able to get hot and kind of walk the dog and no one sees more off speed pitches in the entire game than Nick castiano highest percentage of non-f fastball scene this season minimum a thousand pitches so they're spinning it to Nick and he was all over it he's been good he's an interesting character just being around him says he's taking glorified BP in the game he's the only guy I've ever heard say that but it works for him and I want to just see if he was doing anything different from a side angle perspective from April when he was really strling until now and yeah maybe he's a little wider in his setup in April but there's not much there run this slow I mean he talked about putting in the work putting in the process pause I mean pretty similar right there maybe a little bit more Square to to the pitcher not as closed off run it pause there's not much there he's just locked in right now give me out of this one thing I do see though and watching yordon Alvarez stride to the plate last night and it'll be the third tile what I'm seeing a lot of the great hitters do is set this hip all right watch this run that back for me real quick it's so subtle watch him take and I want set this up yes watch him go like this you're seeing it a lot and what they're doing is kind of setting into this back hip and what that's helping them do is not dive forward they're getting into this back hip staying back here and just unraveling watch him do this set set and he sits there and almost shows you he shows the picture his back pocket and I'm seeing it a lot more with guys pause bring him back to where he's stacked run it pause you see this back hip is kind of pushed further towards their Dugout than this one a lot of guys myself included I never thought that it was about being Square so are you ever really into your backside totally what I'm seeing a lot is guys almost predetermined mentally preset that back hip yordon last night was doing it run it and there's a lot of guys in the league give me some Bobby Wht gunar Henderson last night subtle run it back real quick watch him show his back pocket at the last second he'll give you that right cheek right at Jack flarity it's working for him 33 bombs yeah you see it just a little tweak back into that back hip sou Perez I'm noticing him do it he's getting almost like he's pitching and he is hitting tanks I mean golly the balls he's hitting in Progressive Field pause now slow click it that that move right there where the back hip is almost getting behind you you can't jump it feels too awkward to jump so run this I will say I tried this with my 14-year-old son and it works Bobby Wht does it too I also think I fractured his growth plate in his groin doing it though he did miss a substantial part of the time we've abandoned it for now maybe it's something you got to do when you're a little bit older wise the God is this guy right watch that back kep boom nothing's going forward great game last night Nola yeah have the Astros one more and then the Braves yeah the Braves and then the Astros uh tomorrow begin a series at home against the Kansas City Royals so definitely a challenging stretch m in [Music] there is a speed bump on the front there is a speed bump on the front there is a speed bump on the front
