How Toronto Keeps Its Beaches Clean Is a Much Bigger Effort Than You’d Think

wind snow and heavy rain life on the world's 13th largest lake comes with a wide variety of intense weather every season millions of people head down to the Waterfront to enjoy Toronto's beautiful beaches but did you know there are countless hours that go in behind the scenes to have our beaches ready for the public and that team is led by James Dan manager of Waterfront parks for the city of Toronto my kids actually mock me on how much I follow the weather um the weather indicates so many things as to sort of how our beach attendance will look like whether we have huge rain snow wind uh extreme heat Mother Nature makes certain the entire team is busy year round we quite often get a lot of debris that comes Downstream ends up washing up onto our beaches so that kind of debris we have to remove with a combination of frontend loaders staff manually lifting logs debris we use our beach groomers to go out and clear out the detris and the the wash up that comes through the seaweed the leaves uh all that sort of extra stuff that hits the beaches but there's no one specific type of weather that poses the biggest problem rather a series of events that prove to be the most challenging the challenge that we Face tends to be not with single isolated incidents but multiple incidents one on top of another um and wind and rain would have the most sort of pronounced effect on the beach environment with flooding um with erosion um with the shifting of s the movement of sand and that can be extremely challenging from cleaning washrooms to sifting through sand a lot of work starts while Toronto is still sleeping we do a lot of work before people get out of bed and that work we try to get done before the public comes down the public we want them to arrive and it's looks the same and they just think oh this is amazing the entire team is dedicated to protecting this incredible resource and ensuring everyone has access to clean and safe beaches for the future [Music] [Music]
